Death of the Midnight Showing

It used to be that when a big blockbuster came out, if you were truly devoted, you’d go to the midnight showing. People would dress up and wait in line for hours. It always felt like a mini-con to me.

But recently, theaters have been opening their doors earlier and earlier. For example: last night I went to see Iron Man 3 at 10:30. And that wasn’t even the first showing of the night. It felt wrong somehow, seeing it before midnight. But the whole point of a midnight showing is to see the movie first. So essentially the 9 o’clock showing is the new midnight showing. Except that the 10:30 was barely packed and it just wasn’t the same.  I mean, there were maybe 30+ people in the theater all together. I long for a packed house. And an entire theater of like-minded nerds. All reacting together to what’s happening on the screen, like a glorious tidal wave moving as one.

In the future it will only be the midnight showing for me. Regardless of whether I see it first or not. I just wouldn’t have it any other way.

In other news, Iron Man 3 was highly enjoyable and a great addition to not only the Iron Man collection, but the whole Marvel universe!! Go see it!
