Comic Con Recap

Friday Highlights

Today I had the priviledge of running a few panels I would otherwise never have thought to go to. And they were great!

-First up was ‘Setting the Score: Composing for Film and Television.’ On the panel was Dino Meneghin, Frederick Wiedmann, Jay Vincent, Kevin Menthei, Matthew Patches and Will Bates.

Between them all they’ve worked on projects such as: Teen Wolf, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mass Effect 3, Ninjago, Green Lantern Animated Series, Michael Buble, Josh Groban, The Calling, Resident Evil, Ultimate Spiderman, Almost Earth, The Golden Globes and much more.

It was so interesting to hear them speak about a side of the music industry that doesn’t get nearly as much press as it deserves. Here are a few quotes from the panel.

‘Our job is to sit in a room with directors, producers, etc and turn their words into music.’
                     -Kevin Manthei
‘If you hear a melody enough times, it sticks in your heart and that’s a priviledge to make’
                     -Jay Vincent

All of these men truly loved their craft. It was great to attend this panel!!

-Next was another panel about music. ‘Maestros of Horror and Sci-Fi Music.’ On this panel was Cris Velasco, Daniel Kayser, Jason Graves, Kevin Riepl, Nile Rodgers, Sam Hulick, Sascha Dikiciyan and Tom Salta.

I must make mention, on both composer panels a lot of the men mentioned Star Wars as their inspiration for pursuing a career in music. This is no great surprise but is merely awesome!!

One of the main things I learned in this panel is that video game composers do not have their own Grammy category.
“Once the word ‘game’ was attached to the genre it immediately was associated with kiddie games. And therefore was not taken seriously.” -Nile Rodgers

“Video games need their own Grammy category!”  -Nile Rodgers

-The last panel I worked was for Aspen Comics.

This brand is celebrating is 10th anniversary next year. Congrats!!
The thing that most excoted me was their first novel release called ‘The Lost Spark’ by J.T. Krul. It really piqued my interest. Check it out.
On this panel were Frank Mastromauro, J.T. Krul, Joe Benitez and Peter Steigerwald.

After I finished my shift, I shed my crew shirt and headed off to explore the show floor.

After the con, I headed to the Best Buy theater to watch Tge Nerdist Podcast Live from NYC!!

Guest stars  Guillermo del Toro, Joel Hodgson and Travis Beacham were on hand to lend nerd support. Aling with the ever present Jonah Ray and Matt Mira. And of course leader of the nerd herd himself Chris Hardwick.
Great way to end a full day of nerdocity!
