5 Fandom Friday

My Favorite Conventions

Today’s 5 Fandom Friday topic is the 5 conventions you’ve been to or wish to attend. The very first convention I ever attended was Star Wars Celebration. I took my brother for his birthday and it opened a whole new world for me. I’d never been to a con before that. I had no idea what to expect. No idea what was about to happen. I got bit by the convention bug…hard! So here’s my list.

#1 – Star Wars Celebration

download

As I said, Celebration is the first convention I ever attended. So it holds a very special place in my heart! Plus it’s an entire con devoted to that galaxy far, far away. My favorite of the galaxies! Click Here for more information.

#2 – New York Comic Con

download (1)

New York Comic Con is a must for nerds of all persuasions! It has something for everyone. And this year it even eclipsed San Diego Comic Con’s staggering attendance. There are panels about everything you could ever want to know about. Sometimes I go with friends, sometimes I go along, and I always have a blast! Click Here for more information.

#3 – Nerd HQ

nerd-hq

Nerd HQ was born out of Zachary Levi’s desire to bring a more personalized experience to the fans. And to raise money for Operation Smile at the same time. I haven’t heard if it’s coming back for a 5th year this year, but I sure hope it is. Because it’s an amazing event with a very worthy cause! Click Here for more information.

#4 – Book Con

SundayPM5-BookConSlider

Last year was the very first year of Book Con and it was amazing. An entire convention dedicated to books and reading!. Why didn’t we think of this earlier. If you have a chance to attend this year… do it! Click Here for more information.

#5 – Leaky/ Geeky Con

images

What once was Leaky Con, a convention born out of a deep, abiding love for all things Harry Potter, is now Geeky Con. A convention that celebrates all manner of geekdom! I can’t wait to see how it will change. Click Here for more information.

A little blast from conventions past.

Hopefully I’ll be able to make it to a whole bunch more this year. I have a couple things brewing for 2015 and I can’t wait to share them with you. In the meantime, see you at the cons!

Once Upon a Comic Con

Stepping off the subway at 34th and Broadway, you can sense in the air that this is not your typical Thursday in New York City. Something special is going on.

Those in the know are aware of what that something is. But the lay people of NY may be confused by the sight of Gandalf the grey on their train. And really confused by Two-Face Gandalf the Grey and White. But hey… it’s New York. So maybe they chalk it up to the quirks and oddities that come with everyday city life.

But then comes Princess Peach and Darth Vader. A Jedi My Little Pony walks by followed closely by an Optimus-Bumblebee hybrid. (Hybrids were very big this year. Click HERE for a laugh about it from College Humor.) Maybe characters they don’t even have a name for. These are the unique, non-mainstream costumes that only those of the “nerd” persuasion can identify and truly appreciate.

Yes… this is New York Comic Con.

New_York_Comic_Con_logo.svg_

A place where Harley Quinn and Iron Man can be seen walking hand in hand. A magical land where Bronies and Deadpools and Stormtroopers all belong. And where you can find a unique interpretation of Elsa around every corner. Basically it’s nerd heaven!

The second you walk through those big glass doors, after making it through the never ending line that finally ends and you have your bags and weapons checked at the door, you do one of two things… 1. Quickly race to the first panel of the day or 2. Head straight up to the showroom floor. Either way you head there will be another line waiting for you. But it’s a line filled with Poison Ivy’s, Slave Leia’s, 10th Doctors and Disney Princesses… so is this line the end of the world? Nope! Just another day at the office.

If you have any Comic Con Spidey sense, you brought your snacks, wore the proper footwear and have leisurely mapped your day out, incorporating ample people watching time. Because that in and of itself is a beautiful and fascinating thing.

Witnessing people in their natural element is an amazing treat and these people, my people, are most at home here at the Con. Among thousands of other like minds who understand their fandoms and passions. I can fall as easily into conversation with the Cumberbitches as I can with the Whovians. And the Trekkies and the Hookers (a newer one for sure.) And even with the DC universe vs the Marvel universe… here at the Con we are all nerds in this together. No warring factions here.

And for the first year ever, we have eclipsed the staggering mythological numbers that SDCC pulls in every year. And why not? After all, we are no red-headed step child. We are NYCC. A tour de force, a tidal wave of nerd culture. And in New York City we never do anything small!!

Happy Friday to Ya!

Hope you are enjoying a lovely Friday wherever you are today. I’m in New York about to head over to New York Comic Con. It’s an excellent day for a geek fest and an even better day to laugh. Check out our bloopers from So…This Happened. They’re pretty hilarious!!

And let me know how you’ll be spending this lovely Friday. Also, don’t forget to head over to Instagram and Twitter and enter my Thursday Giveaway!

The Con has Begun!

New York Comic Con is in full swing. Which means that if you are between 30th and 38th Street on the West side of the city then you are probably getting quite the parade of cosplayers right about now. It also means that all manner of nerd royalty has descended on our fair city to make appearances, announcements, preview trailers and tell amazing stories.
It’s basically the best thing ever!

imageIn honor of nerd mecca, Nerd in the City is giving away a special Comic Con survival kit. It includes: pins, lanyard, snacks and more. Head over to Twitter and/or Instagram and follow to be entered to win. If you are already following this Nerd in the City, good for you! Comment or tweet me and let me know you’ll be at the con with the #Seeyouthere. Contest runs till Sunday at midnight. Good luck and hopefully I’ll see you at New York Comic Con!!

And make sure to check back here for more updates from the con!

Aura of the Con

I won’t be at Comic Con till Sunday. Prior commitmets are keeping me from mecca this weekend.

But knowing that the con is in town and that I’m not there feels wrong somehow.

So yesterday I took a walk on the west side just to be around the essence of nerdom going on at the Javits.

Once I hit 10th avenue, I immediately felt like I belonged. I didn’t even need to be in the con to feel the aura of the con. That’s the thing about being a nerd, you can never escape who you are and once you are around nerds you start to feel at home.

More to come…

And let me know what you are up to on Twitter @nerdinthecity. I want to hear all about it!!

Surviving New York Comic Con

Tip #2: DO NOT plan to eat at the Javits Center. It is important for you to know that not only is the food at the Javits not incredibly delicious, it’s also not incredibly cheap. It’s the opposite of cheap. It cost an arm and a leg and unless you are smack in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, a disposable arm and/or leg may be hard to come by. So plan ahead. Bring a lunch or schedule time to take a walk outside and get some real food. Nearby restaurants include but are not limited to:

Mcdonalds: May not be the best cuisine, but it’s reliable and it’s dirt cheap. Plus there is a Mickey D’s right on 34th street and 10th Ave to make it easy to dash out and back and barely miss a beat or a panel.

River Diner: Located at 452 11th Ave. Diner food is always predictable, but it’s reliably good and decently priced.

Bianca’s Steakhouse: If you are not from here and want to experience a little of the food culture that New Yorkers love to brag on, why not try something a little fancier like this Steakhouse on w. 38th St.

O’Farrells: You can never go wrong with good old fashioned pub food. Try this Irish pub at 413 10th Ave.

Tip #3: That seat is yours for as long as you want it. If you made it into a panel (especially some of the bigger ones) and you want to stay for the following panel, you have every right to do so. That is NYCC policy and not everyone knows about it. So make sure to plan ahead and plant your butt in that seat if that room has multiple panels you are interested in attending!!

Tip #4: Artist Alley is cool. Just go there. There are so many artists and talented people doing great work and what better place to discover a new favorite than in the artist alley. Most of the artists are there and will gladly autograph their work for you. Making it a more personal experience. If they ever hit the big time you can say “I liked them way before. All the way back at Comic Con 2013!” Nerds love bragging on how long they’ve loved an actor and/or artist.

Tip #5: R-E-S-P-E-C-T Show a little respect to each other. This isn’t so much a tip as it is a request. We nerds have to stick together. We are apart of a large community of like minded dorks that the rest of the world just doesn’t understand. So try not to attack each other for a spot in line, Try not to ram your gigantic bag of swag into the unsuspecting arm of a fellow attendee. Try not to push someone out of the way for a photo with Patrick Stewart. We have to band together against long lines and fatigue and terrible convention food. So just try a little tenderness!!
