30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 3

30 Days of Nerdy Hair blog post

Day 3: Uhura from Star Trek (the original)

Most days I’m working on two factors…accuracy and/or wearability. Somedays I achieve one and not the other. Other days I manage to hit both goals. Today was not that day. Neither is this wearable or particularly accurate to the wonder that is Nichelle Nichols hair from the original Star Trek series. But nerdy hair is first and foremost about fun and second, it’s a learning experience.

I learned that this is not a style that will be incorporated into my master book of favorite hair styles. I also learned that I am sick of my roots!!! ūüėČ

#NerdsLove

February is the month of love. Which often¬†illicits a “Yuck” and an eye roll from me. Instead of my usual “down with love” attitude, I decided instead to share the things I love with my instapeeps. And the best part is that a bunch of you joined my challenge and shared the things you loved with me! Check out the hashtag #NerdsLove for more from everyone and each individual hashtag below for more specific expressions of love.

Me? I love it all! @NerdintheSand

The Family That Nerds Together

Nerd runs deep in my family. My father has it, my brother has it, my mother has it, my uncle has it, my cousin has it and of course… I have it.

Nerdy things were not cool at school. But they sure were cool at home!
My parents are huge Trekkies, saw Star Wars in the theaters and are always watching whatever superhero, fairytale, castaway TV show comes on. The nerd runs even deeper than my immediate family. My aunt and uncle, my cousin and her husband…we’re all a bunch of nerds.

So I come by my nerd pretty naturally. You could say I was destined for nerdom! And in the wake of a new Star Wars movie, I wondered what my family members felt about Star Wars. What it’s meant to them. And here’s what they said…

Linton (Uncle):

“I can remember thinking ‘STAR WARS?’ How could anything be better than STAR TREK? Not possible!! But then I went to see it, it was just AMAZING! From the scroll in the beginning to the very end. Star Trek, take a back seat!”

Star Trek, take a back seat!%22

Barbara (Mom):

“It’s hard to believe that I have such a vivid picture of watching the first Star Wars movie in 1977 since I don’t have a great memory about other events in my past. I remember not really knowing much about what I was going to be seeing. I went with some friends from college. I always liked Sci-Fi, Star Trek was a favorite, but I didn’t really know much about Star Wars.

That day in the theater when it came on the big screen was like nothing I’d ever seen before. Bigger than life, exciting, fantastic, amazing! Coming out of the theater we couldn’t talk about anything else, but what we had just experienced. And when we learned that there was going to be another movie made, we were ecstatic.

Each subsequent movie has been the same, bigger than life and amazing. I know the upcoming one will be awesome and I can’t wait!”

STORIES.jpg

Sterling (Cousin):

“Well it was you and Jeremy who introduced me to Star Wars (along with Power Rangers, the Rosie O’Donnell Show and Gone with the Wind, those were the only things ever on TV at your house.) And my first memory was actually not watching Star Wars together, but dressing up for Halloween as Star Wars characters together. My Ewok costume wasn’t staying together so I remember my father stapling me into it.”

Jeremy (Brother):

“Star Wars. I must say it has been quite a ride for me. I cannot pinpoint when I first watched it or when I first became a superfan, mainly because it’s been with me for as long as I can remember. My sister likes to think that she introduced me to it, I tend to think the other way around. Whatever the case, it has been a huge part of my life. There was a time post-prequels when my enthusiasm waned. Why? Who knows. It could have been my post-college adulthood trying to push out all of the things I liked as a kid. Whatever the reason, Star Wars was put on the back burner for several years.

What brought it back (and in a big way?) I think it must have been watching Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series. It gave me new stories and characters to love as well as reminding me of all of the other aspects of Star Wars I loved.

Now, I’m back to being that superfan I was as a kid (so much so, I have a Star Wars room and even contemplated naming my soon-to-be baby girl Leia…or Rey.) And how, if you are a living breathing human (or non-human) can you not be excited about The Force Awakens? I mean…Episode VII!!! Who ever thought that this day would come! (*contented sigh)

I LOVE STAR WARS!”

DESSERTS

Eric (Dad):

“I saw Episode IV then I was a counselor at Salvation Army summer camp.. The rest of the time at camp we college age counselors (at least the cool ones) discussed the various aspects of the movie. Little did I know that that was just the beginning of my involvement with a whole new universe – or at least a galaxy!”

Black Friday Deals (Her Universe Edition)

I used to be all about Black Friday. I’d get up at 6 am and hit all my favorite stores to get the best deals on Christmas gifts and decorations and clothes and such. But as Black Friday has become increasingly frantic and as it’s started to encroach on Thanksgiving (I’m looking at you Old Navy) I’ve lost my desire to fight the hoards.

Now I do my shopping online. Not necessarily on Black Friday, because sales usually roll back around and also these days I’m trying to shop much more ethically than in the past and that definitely means staying far away from the big chain stores (still looking at you Old Navy.)

Her Universe is a company I’ve loved for a long time. Ashley Eckstein (aka the voice of Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars’s Clone Wars and Rebels) built a company around the idea that fangirls like to wear nerdy things and still look adorable. With licensing from Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Marvel and more, Her Universe is making fangirl fashion dreams a reality. These are the 5 pieces I am dying to buy (of course they’re all Star Wars!!!)

#1: Cloud City Pin-Up Dress

#2: Vader Pleather Jacket

#3: Lightsaber Skirt

#4: Maison De Vader Tee

Fandoms I’m Thankful For

Thanksgiving is this Thursday. A time to take stock. A time to examine life. A time to count your blessings. A time to be thankful…for FANDOMS!! These are the ones I’m thankful for:

#1: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. I grew up with Star Wars. It’s the first fandom I remember being crazy about. It makes me think of family. It makes me think of powerful female figures. It makes me think Hubba Hubba Han Solo. It’s the ultimate fandom for this nerdy girl!

#2: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. Ever since the announcement that Disney purchased Lucasfilm from George Lucas, I have been counting down the days till the big day. Sure, every Star Wars fan knows that May is the pivotal month for the galaxy far, far away, but I kinda love that we are getting Star Wars for Christmas this year. What can I say, I’m thankful!

#3: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. The Star Wars Universe is a vast and beautiful place. I have been reading books from the expanded universe for many years. So yes, I was initially disappointed that the canon was disbanded. (RIP Mara Jade. You will always be in our hearts!) But I’ve had plenty of time to accept the new Star Wars future. Which now includes brand new expanded universe books. And the beauty is that the old canon books are still highly enjoyable works. Bring on the

#4: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. Star Wars brings people together. Don’t believe me? Attend Star Wars Celebration sometime. Read up on the 501st and the charity works that they are involved in. Read the story of Daniel and the petition to allow him an early viewing of The Force Awakens before his death on. When Star Wars fans gather, great things happen, internets are broken and so are records. If you still doubt the power of the Star Wars fan base, just keep an eye on the box office the weekend of December 18th. You’ll feel the Force then, I can promise you that!

#5: Marvel, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, LOST, Star Trek, Flash/ Arrow, Sherlock, Downton Abbey, Supergirl, Once Upon A Time, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead…
image
Ok…ok! I like a couple other fandoms besides Star Wars and I’m just as grateful for them. When the prospect of Star Wars looms…everything else just pales in comparison. But each of these fandoms (and many more) all have their places in my heart!!

Come countdown to The Force Awakens with me on Instagram. Tag me: @nerdinthesand and use the hashtag: #StarWarsChallenge

44 Reasons Why It Is Good To Be a Nerd

It is so darn good to be a nerd right now. And if you don’t consider yourself a nerd, let me go ahead and give you your very own, personal invitation. It is never too late to join our tribe.
image

We may come off a little strong at first, but we love when people come to the Dark Side (or the Light, if you’re into that sort of thing.) Don’t mistake our passion and zeal for anything other than just that.

Sure…there are trolls. But trust me when I say, we take care of our own! Here are 44 reasons why right now is the time to join us…and together we can rule the fandom!!!
image

1. STAR WARS EPISODE VII: THE FORCE AWAKENS (tickets have been purchased!! Internets have been broken. This is the big leagues.)
2. Star Wars Episode VIII (ok we don’t know what it’s called yet, but the script is written and the funds are already designated!)
3. Star Wars Episode IX (we don’t even know who’s directing this one, but trust us…we’ll be there!)
4. Star Wars: Rogue One
5. Rumors of a young Han Solo film (rumors are our bread and butter. Get used to it.)
6.Star Wars Rebels (It’s only on season 2, plenty of time to catch up!)
7. Anything else Star Wars that is in the Disney pipeline. (If you aren’t sensing a trend then there may not be hope for your induction into our society.)
8. Ok…we do like some other things too…try Star Trek (anything with Star in it makes the short list!)
9.New Star Trek TV show in the works
image
10. Any and all things Marvel (ie: the next 14 items on the list)
11. Marvel’s Jessica Jones (this one premiers in 7 days so you better catch up and watch all of Daredevil on Netflix stat!)
12. Marvel’s Captain America Civil War (trailer will be dropping very soon.)
13. Marvel’s Doctor Strange
14. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy 2
15. Marvel’s Spider-Man
16. Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok
17. Marvel’s Black Panther
18. Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War Part 1
19. Marvel’s Ant Man and the Wasp
20. Marvel’s Captain Marvel
21. Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War Part 2
22. Marvel’s Agents of Shield (currently in season 3 on ABC)
23. Marvel’s Agent Carter (season 2 starts in January)
24. Marvel’s Luke Cage and Iron Fist (both coming to Netflix along with season 2 of Daredevil.)
image
25. DC has a lot of exciting things coming to our eyeballs soon as well (they just haven’t all earned their own number slot in this nerd’s estimation, but some are worthy like…)
26. DC’s Suicide Squad
27. DC’s Justice League
28. DC’s Arrow (currently in season 3 on The CW)
29. DC’s The Flash (currently in season 2 also on The CW)
30. DC’s Supergirl (kicking major butt in it’s first season on CBS)
image
31. The Walking Dead
32. Once Upon a Time
33. Doctor Who
34. Game of Thrones
35. More Jurassic Park
36. Word of more Indiana Jones is in the ether.
image
37. A little thing called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (translation: more Harry Potter)
38. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (translation: even more Harry Potter)
39. Netflix and Hulu are making it easier than ever to catch up on your nerd. In my day you had to wait for DVD sets to be released and either rent from Blockbuster (yeah that was a thing) or just spend the $29.99 to own it. You’ve got no excuses anymore! LOST, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Heroes, Supernatural, X-Files they can all be yours!)
image
40. Speaking of The X-Files, you better get started cause new X-Files is coming our way in January. Jump on it and believe!
41. Star Wars Battlefront (if you aren’t a gamer yet, why not let Battlefront pull you in!)
42. Any and all things Disney (they make things other than Star Wars and Marvel movies as well. I know…crazy!)
43. Oh, speaking of Star Wars…there is so much amazing expanded universe literature coming out. (Start reading! Reading is cool! There’s a lot to catch up on!)
44. There are plenty of other awesomely nerdy things coming out before and after and in between all that’s listed above. But I’m trying to think past December 17th, 2015 and I’m finding it very hard to do.

Well…you have a lot of homework to do so you better get started now. See you on the other side where I’ll be waiting with your Nerd membership card*. We will engage in an obligatory lightsaber battle and a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock. It’s what we do!

*Membership card not guaranteed.

5 Fandom Deaths I’m Still Upset About

Fair warning! This post contains many spoilers because one cannot talk fandom deaths without actually mentioning who it is that died. So if you haven’t watched Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, LOST, The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones than don’t look. Don’t be spoiled. Go watch those shows and come back…see you in a few months or a few years if you aren’t that dedicated to getting through them all.

Thanks to The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick for creating 5 Fandom Friday.

Here goes…

#1 – Amy and Rory from Doctor Who

cd81f94dff70f27e180ef46c0a9832ec

OK, so the fans knew this one was coming. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill were set to leave the show. It was either die or stop time traveling all together and Amy Pond would never have quit her raggedy man if she could help it. So they died. Death by old age, so not a bad way to go. But to be ripped from your own timeline by a Weeping Angel…no thanks. This episode still causes major waterworks every time I watch it. I’ll never get over losing Amy and Rory!!

#2 – Tara from Buffy the Vampire Slayer

8a6fa1ddefc462bd7b15d4482d5c66c4

There are quite a few upsetting deaths on BtVS (I’m looking at you Joyce and Jenny.) Even Buffy herself bit the bullet, not once up twice. But Tara’s death still manages to shock and upset me the most. When¬†you see that blood splatter on Willow’s crisp white peasant blouse…Tara’s blood. Tara who was sweet and innocent and Willow’s lobster. Torn away from the mortal coil by a gun shot to the chest. This one stings because it smacks of reality. In a fantastical world like Buffy, to have died from something so human as a gun shot…well, it just sucks.¬†We live in a world where this is far too common. And Tara’s death still feels completely unjust. Warren deserved the flaying that he got, if you ask me!

#3 – Charlie from LOST

0b6e8cac5dd069b6de6eff2970765a05

DANG! Charlie!! This one stings every time I think about it. You LOST fans know the keen loss. The pain still smarts! I never saw this one coming. I guess I should have. By season 3, people were being picked off like flies. I guess I still thought the core cast (the ones I like most) would be safe. Of course, we’d come to find out that no one is truly safe on LOST and it is Charlie’s death that really taught us that lesson. The words “Not Penny’s Boat” still haunt me. Charlie went out saving lives. The perfect symmetry to how he entered our lives. He began as a selfish, drugged out rock star and truly became a fan favorite (or at least this fan’s favorite!)

#4 – Ned Stark from Game of Thrones

8e202c0f0dbafe4140a418a7f6161c86

I’m a GOT book reader. I’ve read books 1-4 so I knew it was coming, but it still didn’t prepare me for the sadness of losing the Stark patriarch. Ned Stark was a man of justice and integrity. He kept the monarch in line and his own family. Tough job, especially when you have Lannisters against you. He was domed from the beginning because on Game of Thrones, the just and the moral get punished.

To be fair, there are more shocking and more horrifying deaths on Game of Thrones (see: Rob Stark, Catelyn Stark, Jon Snow, Ygritte, Khal Drogo, Oberyn Martell, etc.) but it’s Ned’s death that sets the tone for the series in season 1. It’s Ned’s death that sets the Lannisters up for their reign of power and ultimate downfall. And it’s Ned Stark who could have stopped the evil from spreading through Westeros. We miss you, Ned! (Please stop killing Sean Bean off of things I like!)

#5 – Hershel from The Walking Dead

e5d7f0afda9b9503f398f52de7ceb23c

The Walking Dead is another show where death is rampant and usual. It’s rarely surprising anymore (except if Darryl were to die… that would be shocking and surprising and completely upsetting…Don’t do that, AMC!) But I admit, Hershel’s death got me. I literally screamed when it happened. (That’s what happens when you watch TWD alone in your apartment with all the lights off.) Hershel was another example of someone who kept the balance. Being a good guy is a really tough business on TV. No one cared when Angela died or stupid Dale. It’s the good ones that truly rip the heart out. And Hershel’s death was my least favorite one (though Beth’s came pretty close.)

Honorable Mention – Tasha Yar from Star Trek: The Next Generation
fef62fdabeb5cb03caed9493079adf56

I want to give a shout out to one of the earliest fandom,¬†TV deaths, Tasha Yar. Star Trek killed off Tasha way before it was cool to kill off characters. And no one saw that one coming because the internet wasn’t what it is today… or even a thing at all. So there were no rumors surrounding her upcoming death. Or fan theories about. She was an upstanding crew member who went on an away mission to a planet with a tar monster. She was taken by the tar monster…goodbye Tasha Yar.

If this post has left you¬†feeling a little depressed and nostalgic for characters long gone, then definitely don’t go back and watch the happy times before they died. I tried that with season 1 of Game of Thrones…trust me, it only made things worse.

5 Geeks Who Inspire Me

Before this week, I’ve been away from the Blogosphere for a little while. And I have to share that I haven’t been the same without my blog or without you, my darling, nerdy readers. It’s a part of me. An extension of my brain and of my personality. And I think I’d forgotten that! I must have, because I thought it’d be a good idea to take a break from writing. When in fact, writing is exactly what I’ve always needed to help me figure out the cobwebs of my mind.

Whether it’s introspective blogs like I’ve been writing this past week, or blog topics that we write together as a community like today…I’ve remembered why I started blogging in the first place. And while I don’t promise never to take another break (cause sometimes we need such things) I do, however, promise not to neglect my little blog. She who has been there in so many dark moments. She whom I found¬†over 4 years ago, but I suspect it’s she who found me!

This week’s 5 Fandom Friday topic is about Geeks who inspire me. Cutting this down to just 5 people is tough. There are so many amazing nerdy folks out there living the dream. But here are the ones who really speak to and inspire me!

#1: Felicia Day

5ee83a65570dee0a744dd5074151d6f6

She has offered nerd girl’s everywhere the inspiration to step out and shout “I’m a nerdy girl and proud of it.” She was a potential slayer in season 7 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and also starred opposite Nathan Fillion and Neil Patrick Harris in Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog which she helped write with Joss Whedon. She’s also the writer and star of her own extremely popular web series,¬†The Guild. Founder of the nerd mecca that is Geek and Sundry and now author of her own autobiography (which I just bought last night and started reading), “You’re Never Weird on the Internet (almost).” Felicia Day has been where we nerd girls have all been and she’s made it to a place we sometimes wish we could reach. Acceptance. Acceptance of who she is, of the power she wields and of the world she lives in.

#2: Zachary Levi

00f8fda90581c35c71857372de16474e

If you’ve been reading my blog or following me on any social media platform, then this one is a no brainer! He’s the founder of The Nerd Machine and of Nerd HQ. He’s the star of Chuck and the voice of Flynn Ryder. He’s an ambassador for Operation Smile and a genuinely kind man. He’s Zachary Levi and I am constantly inspired by him. Doesn’t hurt that he’s 6’3″ and loves Jesus! He has often been called the King of the Nerds. He leads the charge and finds a way to give back every chance he gets.

#3: Wil Wheaton
66b9b9a4deb32aba3583843d7396bca3

¬†It was the early 90’s and one of my favorite shows to watch with my mom and dad was Star Trek: The Next Generation. And since I was between the age of 5 and 12 when TNG was on the air, I was the perfect age to fall head first in love with the dashing, young Wesley Crusher. He was just a kid and he was serving on the USS Starship Enterprise. Be still my preteen heart! Later I would come to admire Wil for his work in Felicia Day’s web series, The Guild and as himself on The Big Bang Theory and just for the all around nerdy dude he is. He can also¬†be seen as the host of Geek and Sundry’s Table Top. Wesley Crusher was not a favorite among TNG watchers, but Wil didn’t let that stop him from becoming the nerdy icon that he is today!

#4 –¬†John Boyega

9d75dbb4cc9022286a3d0ae6bce4f5e2

No, he didn’t make the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, but now he knows someone who did. John Boyega is one of the lucky stars who will be in a little film called, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (maybe you’ve heard of it.) As a bonafide fanboy himself, one imagines that when the call came in that he’d gotten a part in the biggest movie of our time that he ‘Squee’d’ the ‘Squee’ of a thousand nerds, especially since he’s a Star Wars nerd himself. We don’t know much about his character other that his name is Finn and he now has a chance to wield Luke/ Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber and we don’t know why. (Dear Lord, let December come swiftly!!!) It is a joy to watch him at conventions and press junkets, because he is truly one of us. A nerd to the core…inside and out. And we are proud to have him represent his people in the Star Wars Universe!

#5: Veronica Roth

c2a1b9d855b999aebfabc6aaf635499b

Another nerd to the core. I started out liking Veronica Roth as the author of the Divergent series. It’s a great set of books with a compelling story and I like to support the people that create things I like. And then I saw her at Book Con last year and at Geeky Con this year and that’s when I realized that she is one of us. Truly, madly, deeply one of us. Dressed in her Draco Malfoy cosplay and talking about which house she’d be sorted to if she ever went to Hogwarts. Veronica Roth is a bonafide nerd and we nerds gotta stick together!!

Honorable Mention: My Little Brother

wpid-img_20141025_115727.jpg

I love all the nerds I mentioned above, but this nerd is the nerd who made me into a nerd! If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t have watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Power Rangers or Batman: the Animated Series. I would probably still be a Star Wars fangirl (that one was written in the stars) but I might not have the deep understanding of the SW Universe that I have from knowing this guy. My younger (not littler) brother, Jeremy. He is the coolest nerd I know. He taught me how to nerd. And if you are looking for someone to share a road trip with…he is your guy. Plus he comes complete with Star Wars sleeping bag and audio books. He’s a nerdy boy scout, which means he’s always prepared to nerd!

Which nerds/ geeks/ dorks inspire you??
