Day 3: Dory from Finding Nemo & Finding Dory

Full confession, i didn’t see Finding Nemo when it first came out in theaters back in 2003. And by the time I finally did see it, the movie had been over recommended to me and hyped so much that actually watching it was a bit of a let down. People were telling me that it was better than Toy Story…settle down, people!

I enjoyed Finding Nemo just fine, but it was the character of Dory that quickly became my favorite. So when she got her own sequel movie last year, I was pumped! I mean, who could ever resist Baby Dory? Who, I ask you who??

Plus, Finding Dory introduced me to one of my new favorite Pixar characters, Hank the septopus with his snarky, cranky attitude and his seven tentacles! Maybe I’ll even thrift store cosplay him one day!!

Day 2: Where’s Waldo

I don’t know about you, but Where’s Waldo has long been a favorite children’s book series of mine. I always think, going into a Where’s Waldo hunt, that it’s going to be easy to find him. But dang, Waldo is one sneaky dude!!

Hopefully I’m a little easier to find than Waldo is!

Star Wars Day

Taking a little detour from #TheBradshawChallenge momentarily to talk about Star Wars Day! May the 4th Be With You…always!! But especially today!

Let’s talk about ways you can celebrate!

1. Star Wars Marathon

This is the most ideal way to celebrate the day. But since the 4th falls on a Thursday this year, staying home and binge-watching Star Wars movies while eating a box of Wookie Cookies can be a little hard to accomplish. So maybe just choose your most favorite Star Wars movie and watch that today. My favorite is Return of the Jedi, so I will be watching that when I have a moment after work tonight!

2. Rep Your Fandom

Another great way to celebrate today is to wear your fandom gear all day long! Here are some of my favorite Star Wars outfits as well as what I decided to wear today!

Today’s outfit:

3. Get in a Debate

Do you have anyone at work, at home, at the grocery story that likes Star Wars? Get in a debate with them. Say something about how much you love the prequels or that you think Jar Jar Binks isn’t the antichrist! That will kick start a quick conversation with any super fans in the vicinity and maybe make a new friend (or enemy depending on what you say!!)

4. Spread the Love

A great way to decipher if someone is a true fan and potential new friend is to offer them the official greeting that must be said on Star Wars Day “May the 4th Be With You.” If someone says this to you, make sure to respond properly and to listen for those that do as well which is, of course… “And also with you!”

5. Star Wars Book Club

Shameless plug coming up. If you are interested in going deeper into the Star Wars Expanded Universe, then my Star Wars Book Club is exactly what you should discover today on Star Wars Day. Head over the Goodreads and see what we’ve already read and what we are planning to read and jump in as you’d like. This month’s book is Thrawn by the incomparable Timothy Zahn.

6. Tweet, Like, Meme, Gif, Post, Gram, Tumble, etc.

Today is a day to embrace the social media juggernaut. Jump in with all you have and get involved in the inevitable fan fest that happens across all social media platforms today. What’s your favorite Star Wars Movie, tell me on Twitter? Do you have a favorite meme, share it with me on Instagram? Looking for someone to engage in step 3 with, connect with me on Facebook…I can debate the virtues of Hayden Christensen all day long!!

Don’t fight it. Join me!!

7. Go Shopping

Today is a great day to have a little Star Wars shopping spree. Plenty of shops are having specials today in honor of Star Wars Day. Here are some of my favorite places to procure Star Wars merch… Her Universe, Beep Boop Beep Clothing, Think Geek, my local Goodwill and Salvation Army, Disney Store, and Etsy.

There are so many other way to celebrate Star Wars Day too. What are you doing today??

And May the 4th Be With You!

5 Fandom Friday

Black Friday Deals (Her Universe Edition)

I used to be all about Black Friday. I’d get up at 6 am and hit all my favorite stores to get the best deals on Christmas gifts and decorations and clothes and such. But as Black Friday has become increasingly frantic and as it’s started to encroach on Thanksgiving (I’m looking at you Old Navy) I’ve lost my desire to fight the hoards.

Now I do my shopping online. Not necessarily on Black Friday, because sales usually roll back around and also these days I’m trying to shop much more ethically than in the past and that definitely means staying far away from the big chain stores (still looking at you Old Navy.)

Her Universe is a company I’ve loved for a long time. Ashley Eckstein (aka the voice of Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars’s Clone Wars and Rebels) built a company around the idea that fangirls like to wear nerdy things and still look adorable. With licensing from Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Marvel and more, Her Universe is making fangirl fashion dreams a reality. These are the 5 pieces I am dying to buy (of course they’re all Star Wars!!!)

Over-Dressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion

by Elizabeth L. Cline

Book

October is fair fashion month and I had the opportunity to attend a panel moderated by author Elizabeth Cline at the TrimLab a couple week’s ago. Which then prompted me to pick up her book.

About 6 months ago I was sent down the road to fair fashion, what it’s all about and what it means for my life. If I wasn’t already ignited to change my shopping habits, this book would have done the trick! I had cut out Forever 21 because their production practices are very questionable, but I was still holding onto H&M. The lesser of two evils, right? Well after reading this book, I can’t really continue to shop there. And have made the commitment not to shop at any fast fashion chains. I also have committed to having no fast fashion in my web series, So…This Happened, as of Jan. 20th. (We filmed a few episodes before this conviction.)

What I loved about Over-Dressed is that it delves deep into the problems our country currently faces with production, overspending, high volume of waste and the general mindset that fashion is disposable. The amount of clothing that people purchase and throw away is at an all time high. And big, fast-fashion companies like H&M, Forever 21 and Zara are rendering small boutique designers virtually extinct. When you are able to get a “fashionable” top for $5 at Forever 21, why would you pay $150 for something from an independent zer0 waste designer like Tabii Just or Daniel Silverstein? Quality has turned from “well made” to “good enough.”

Cline talks a lot about her own experience with fast fashion and while reading her story, it felt like it could have been my story. When Cline walked out of an “Kmart with 7 pairs of canvas flats,” that was the moment she started her wake up call. The journey she goes on will enlighten you to what is happening in our world right now and really make you think about how you shop!

Definitely give this book a read and allow it to challenge the way you think about fashion and shopping. Do you know what your wearing? Who made it? It’s quality? These are the kind of questions Elizabeth dared to ask herself and will ask you if you let her.

Get it here.
