Day 12: River Song from Doctor Who
Just waiting for The Doctor to come whisk me away on the TARDIS!
Happy Friday, social media lovers!! It’s time for more delicious selections from your favorite Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, You Tube, Vine-loving girl!!!
Do you love musicals? How about original mini musicals? Cause that’s what AV Byte’s Antonius and Vijay have to offer! Check them out on You Tube for brand new content about all your favorite things. Things like Fandoms, Disney Princesses, Disney Villains, Selfies, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones and so much more.
Individually Arielle and Matt are hilarious…but when they Vine together…magic happens!! Don’t just follow one!
I found myself in a Spotify wormhole, not an uncommon occurrence for me. (That “Related Artists” section is dangerous from a time management perspective!) Anyways, that’s when I was first introduced to the beautiful music that comes out of Andrew Ripp! If you like Gavin Degraw (the artist I was listening to when I decided to click on “Related Artists”) then Ripp is right up your alley!! Trust me, you will not be disappointed!
Meet my Twitter buddy @HiddlesEducates. Guess who she loves to tweet about…
Can’t really blame the girl! From her #HiddlestonHappyHour to her full week devoted to celebrating Hiddleston’s birthday, #TomSpiritWeek she is constantly sharing the pics and gifs that will melt even the coldest heart!! Tonight she will be joining me at my #NerdySlumberParty as my guest cohost as we talk about Valentine’s Day and crushes! Guess who she has a crush on!!! 😉
If you are a die hard Jane Austen fan, like me, then perhaps you are or were skeptical about the merits of a book that adds blood, gore and the undead into the prim and proper world of Austen’s Regency Era story. Guess what…the resulting work is simply astoundingly fun! A match made in
heaven or rather…hell!!
Let me assure you…the movie is no less awesome than the book! I was worried that the film adaptation might skimp on the story and go straight for the gory, but the sweeping romance of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet’s love story was not sacrificed.
I was also skeptical about Sam Riley’s, Mr. Darcy. He does not have the countenance that I have come to expect from my Darcy’s. But I have to tell you on the scale from Colin Firth to David Rintoul…I’d place Riley above below Matthew Rhys, but above Elliot Cowan. If only because I’ve never met a Darcy I didn’t like and there are 10, in my estimation, that deserve ranking. Sam Riley definitely gave a solid Darcy performance and upon multiple viewings, I expect him to rise in esteem. The curious thing to me was the timber of his voice. It had a gravelly quality to it that at first I did not care for. But given the dark nature of the zombie apocalypse it started to fit in better than a more refined English accent. All in all, a very charming addition to the Darcy family.
As high as my standards are for Mr. Darcy, they are even higher for the second oldest Bennet sister. Perhaps it’s because I identify so closely with her that I hold her in such high and lofty esteem. Lily James has everything that an Elizabeth Bennet should have. A love of longs walks, a ready wit and oh yeah, she kicks serious zombie ass…a quality I never knew I always wanted in Elizabeth Bennet. Her chemistry with Sam Riley is tangible. Especially in the famous proposal scene, where Mr. Darcy makes his love and his reservations about their match known. Let’s just say Elizabeth, a trained warrior, doesn’t take the insult of his proposal lightly and more than just verbal sparring ensues.
It’s the first time I was ever rooting for Mr. Collins, even if just slightly. The incomparable Matt Smith enters the scene as the silly, ridiculous, irreverent Mr. Collins. But where his predecessors have played the role with nauseating smarm, Smith manages to make Collins seem charming (the only other Collins who achieved a level of charm is Maxwell Glick’s Ricky Collins from the You Tube sensation The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.) It probably helps that I’m incredibly biased towards loving all things Matt Smith, seeing as he is Doctor Who and all! He will always get my vote. I was happy that Charlotte Lucas got to have such a delightful match, though Charlotte herself in this film is quite forgettable.
Lady Catherine de Bourgh
I cannot go further without mentioning another powerhouse in the world of geeky fandom. Lena Headey, Cersei Lanister herself, rounds out this cast as Mr. Collin’s benevolent patroness, the Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Except once again, with delightful twists in store for the fan of this classic story. Lady Catherine is no mere aristocrat sitting on her laurels and passing judgement on the Misses Bennet. She is a hardened warrior who has slayed hoards of zombies and even has an eye patch to show for it (a patch used for necessity, not vanity.) When she confronts Elizabeth about whether or not Darcy has made her an offer of marriage, she does more than ask a few tough questions.
The rest of the players are aptly cast, though widely forgettable. Except for the nefarious Mr. George Wickham who is played by the very charming Jack Huston. So charming, in fact, that I was hoping Wickham would end up being as delightful as the man who played him. Alas, Wickham remains a scoundrel in this adaptation as with all the others.
The Walking unDead
As a fan of all things zombie and all things Jane Austen…my standards on both sides are always very high. I equally expect my romance to be sweeping and my head shots to be brutal. So I am happy to say that I was as satisfied with the portrayal of these beloved characters as I was with the zombie effects. The shots were so resounding that I could feel them in my chest. The zombies were believable…the blood and guts visceral. And the action was fast paced and hard-hitting. It’s as much an action movie as it is a romance. What better way to get boys to appreciate the wonderful world of Austen…just add zombies!
All in all, a really fun movie. I watched the entire thing with a gigantic smile on my face. But, reader… I did not walk away unscathed…
Thanks to Lootcrate for infecting me with the zombie virus!!
Black Friday Deals (Her Universe Edition)
I used to be all about Black Friday. I’d get up at 6 am and hit all my favorite stores to get the best deals on Christmas gifts and decorations and clothes and such. But as Black Friday has become increasingly frantic and as it’s started to encroach on Thanksgiving (I’m looking at you Old Navy) I’ve lost my desire to fight the hoards.
Now I do my shopping online. Not necessarily on Black Friday, because sales usually roll back around and also these days I’m trying to shop much more ethically than in the past and that definitely means staying far away from the big chain stores (still looking at you Old Navy.)
Her Universe is a company I’ve loved for a long time. Ashley Eckstein (aka the voice of Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars’s Clone Wars and Rebels) built a company around the idea that fangirls like to wear nerdy things and still look adorable. With licensing from Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Marvel and more, Her Universe is making fangirl fashion dreams a reality. These are the 5 pieces I am dying to buy (of course they’re all Star Wars!!!)
Are you hunting for deals today? Or surfing the net in your pajamas?
Thanksgiving is this Thursday. A time to take stock. A time to examine life. A time to count your blessings. A time to be thankful…for FANDOMS!! These are the ones I’m thankful for:
#1: Star Wars
Ok…here’s why. I grew up with Star Wars. It’s the first fandom I remember being crazy about. It makes me think of family. It makes me think of powerful female figures. It makes me think Hubba Hubba Han Solo. It’s the ultimate fandom for this nerdy girl!
#2: Star Wars
Ok…here’s why. Ever since the announcement that Disney purchased Lucasfilm from George Lucas, I have been counting down the days till the big day. Sure, every Star Wars fan knows that May is the pivotal month for the galaxy far, far away, but I kinda love that we are getting Star Wars for Christmas this year. What can I say, I’m thankful!
#3: Star Wars
Ok…here’s why. The Star Wars Universe is a vast and beautiful place. I have been reading books from the expanded universe for many years. So yes, I was initially disappointed that the canon was disbanded. (RIP Mara Jade. You will always be in our hearts!) But I’ve had plenty of time to accept the new Star Wars future. Which now includes brand new expanded universe books. And the beauty is that the old canon books are still highly enjoyable works. Bring on the
#4: Star Wars
Ok…here’s why. Star Wars brings people together. Don’t believe me? Attend Star Wars Celebration sometime. Read up on the 501st and the charity works that they are involved in. Read the story of Daniel and the petition to allow him an early viewing of The Force Awakens before his death on. When Star Wars fans gather, great things happen, internets are broken and so are records. If you still doubt the power of the Star Wars fan base, just keep an eye on the box office the weekend of December 18th. You’ll feel the Force then, I can promise you that!
#5: Marvel, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, LOST, Star Trek, Flash/ Arrow, Sherlock, Downton Abbey, Supergirl, Once Upon A Time, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead…
Ok…ok! I like a couple other fandoms besides Star Wars and I’m just as grateful for them. When the prospect of Star Wars looms…everything else just pales in comparison. But each of these fandoms (and many more) all have their places in my heart!!
Come countdown to The Force Awakens with me on Instagram. Tag me: @nerdinthesand and use the hashtag: #StarWarsChallenge
Fall is here. And that means pumpkin spice lattes, corn mazes and brand new seasons of television. Here’s what I’m watching (in no particular order!) Proceed with caution…there be spoilers ahead.
Dear Fox, way to turn this dud around.
Last season really dipped around the 5th or 6th episode. The best parts of the show were the rough and tumble portrayal of Alfred (played by Sean Pertwee), the crazed penguin (played by Robin Taylor) and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Fish Mooney (Jada can do no wrong!) I have a very soft spot in my heart for Ben McKenzie so I always liked him, but Barbara Kean (played by Erin Richards) was completely unbearable.
Gotham suffered from high expectations (much like season 1 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) When telling the story of a pre-Batman Gotham, you have to raise the bar pretty high. Enter season 2 and the Rise of the Villains plot line. Barbara Kean was imprisoned for killing her parents and in the season premier she and all the rest of the crazy-pants inmates of Arkham Asylum have been let loose to roam the city and spread their special brand of mayhem. Yes Please!
And that’s not even mentioning Cory Michael Smith’s, Edward Nygma, who has been turning out strong pre-Riddler performances since day 1. Now in season 2 he is getting a chance to spread his insane wings and begin the process of learning to fly! Double yes please!
This show has a lot of potential. The movie Minority Report (let’s not forget that it came out 13 years ago…) sets the pilot of this show up in a post Precrime world. The precogs are no longer being used to predict crimes. But the youngest precog, Dash (played by the delightful Stark Sands) still gets visions and has been trying to use them, rather unsuccessfully, to save lives. Along comes Detective Lara Vega to give him direction. Definitely one to put on your watch list.
Once Upon a TIme
Talk about coming in with a BANG!
After the events of season 4 and the savior going dark, it was truly promising to be an interesting turn of events and Sunday’s premier did not disappoint. What I loved most was that ABC decided to start slow with Emma’s decent into darkness. Lots of delicious set ups for the season ahead including harkening back to season 1’s memory wipe plot line. Very excited to see where this season is going to take us. If you’re behind on the show, catch up on Netflix. There’s always time to catch up!
The Walking Dead
I just binge-watched season 5. And season 6 doesn’t start till Sunday, October 11th. If you aren’t caught up, there’s plenty of time and it’s worth the watch. I’m expecting great things from the new season!
Agents of SHIELD
Yes! Yes! Yes!
The events of season 2 were so compelling and this new season (premiering tonight on ABC) promises not to disappoint. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has been a dark horse at times, but the Marvel team knows the gem it has on it’s hands and when the going gets tough they bring in the big guns. Which brings us to the Inhumans and the birth of Quake! Pumped for this premiere!
It’s true. Heroes had a rocky last 2 seasons ending in it’s cancellation, but Heroes Reborn is here to fill the void left in our hearts after the end of Heroes. Last week’s 2 hour season premier was incredibly strong. New characters mixed with old favorites and a Brave New World is finally being realized. One to watch!
The Mindy Project
Thank goodness for Hulu, who swooped in at the last minute to rescue The Mindy Project from cancellation hell. With Mindy and Danny expecting a baby, it was just too ripe for comedy to miss and Hulu knew what it was doing! The first 2 episodes were Mindy at her best, charming…neurotic and chock full of funny. With wonderful guest starrings from Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kunal Nayyar in episode 1 alone, season 3 of Mindy is bound to bring joy to everyone still watching…and you should definitely still be watching!
Arrow’s premier doesn’t air till Wednesday, October 7th. But season 2 left off with Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak riding off towards the sunset and away from Starling City. Season 3’s promos show Oliver on the verge of proposal (I might be one of the few humans who don’t ship Ollicity) being called back into active duty as The Arrow. With a new costume and the DC team gearing up for the premier of Legends of Tomorrow in 2016, this season of Arrow promises lots of action and even more of all that we love about the show already!
I may love Arrow, but I LOVE The Flash! The Flash brings a levity to the world of superhero-ing. Season 1 was the strongest performance of last season (if you ask me) and I am eagerly anticipating the premier of season 2 on Tuesday, October 6th.
I have to admit. The 12th Doctor’s story lines haven’t exactly won me over yet. But this new season starts with an epic guitar solo and a return of a favorite villain, the Daleks. With the Doctor’s current companion, Clara, on her way out and the eager anticipation of the one and only River Song (played by Alex Kingston) I’m ready to finally let the Doctor win my heart. (Probably just in time to have to say goodbye. That’s how this works!)
Out of all the new shows this season, I am most excited to see CBS’s Supergirl. There have been mixed reviews so far. With the Superhero meets Devil Wears Prada angle in play, it could easily go either way. But I find that angle to be interesting and I find Melissa Benoit charming. So I have high hopes.
The Big Bang Theory
What a way to start the new season of The Big Bang Theory, This show can at times be a little tired as it plays on the age old story of nerds who can’t get the girls. But Leonard and Penny have just tied the knot but there’s trouble in paradise only hours after tying the knot and Amy has broken up with Sheldon. So the stories do seem promising and I’ve always found the show (especially Jim Parson’s Sheldon) rather hilarious! I’ve already tuned in to the first 2 eps and I can’t wait to see where they take Amy and Sheldon’s relationship!
What are you watching this season and what are you enjoying so far?? Let me know in the comments below or come connect with me on social media!
5 Fandom Deaths I’m Still Upset About
Fair warning! This post contains many spoilers because one cannot talk fandom deaths without actually mentioning who it is that died. So if you haven’t watched Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, LOST, The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones than don’t look. Don’t be spoiled. Go watch those shows and come back…see you in a few months or a few years if you aren’t that dedicated to getting through them all.
Thanks to The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick for creating 5 Fandom Friday.
#1 – Amy and Rory from Doctor Who
OK, so the fans knew this one was coming. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill were set to leave the show. It was either die or stop time traveling all together and Amy Pond would never have quit her raggedy man if she could help it. So they died. Death by old age, so not a bad way to go. But to be ripped from your own timeline by a Weeping Angel…no thanks. This episode still causes major waterworks every time I watch it. I’ll never get over losing Amy and Rory!!
#2 – Tara from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
There are quite a few upsetting deaths on BtVS (I’m looking at you Joyce and Jenny.) Even Buffy herself bit the bullet, not once up twice. But Tara’s death still manages to shock and upset me the most. When you see that blood splatter on Willow’s crisp white peasant blouse…Tara’s blood. Tara who was sweet and innocent and Willow’s lobster. Torn away from the mortal coil by a gun shot to the chest. This one stings because it smacks of reality. In a fantastical world like Buffy, to have died from something so human as a gun shot…well, it just sucks. We live in a world where this is far too common. And Tara’s death still feels completely unjust. Warren deserved the flaying that he got, if you ask me!
#3 – Charlie from LOST
DANG! Charlie!! This one stings every time I think about it. You LOST fans know the keen loss. The pain still smarts! I never saw this one coming. I guess I should have. By season 3, people were being picked off like flies. I guess I still thought the core cast (the ones I like most) would be safe. Of course, we’d come to find out that no one is truly safe on LOST and it is Charlie’s death that really taught us that lesson. The words “Not Penny’s Boat” still haunt me. Charlie went out saving lives. The perfect symmetry to how he entered our lives. He began as a selfish, drugged out rock star and truly became a fan favorite (or at least this fan’s favorite!)
#4 – Ned Stark from Game of Thrones
I’m a GOT book reader. I’ve read books 1-4 so I knew it was coming, but it still didn’t prepare me for the sadness of losing the Stark patriarch. Ned Stark was a man of justice and integrity. He kept the monarch in line and his own family. Tough job, especially when you have Lannisters against you. He was domed from the beginning because on Game of Thrones, the just and the moral get punished.
To be fair, there are more shocking and more horrifying deaths on Game of Thrones (see: Rob Stark, Catelyn Stark, Jon Snow, Ygritte, Khal Drogo, Oberyn Martell, etc.) but it’s Ned’s death that sets the tone for the series in season 1. It’s Ned’s death that sets the Lannisters up for their reign of power and ultimate downfall. And it’s Ned Stark who could have stopped the evil from spreading through Westeros. We miss you, Ned! (Please stop killing Sean Bean off of things I like!)
#5 – Hershel from The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead is another show where death is rampant and usual. It’s rarely surprising anymore (except if Darryl were to die… that would be shocking and surprising and completely upsetting…Don’t do that, AMC!) But I admit, Hershel’s death got me. I literally screamed when it happened. (That’s what happens when you watch TWD alone in your apartment with all the lights off.) Hershel was another example of someone who kept the balance. Being a good guy is a really tough business on TV. No one cared when Angela died or stupid Dale. It’s the good ones that truly rip the heart out. And Hershel’s death was my least favorite one (though Beth’s came pretty close.)
I want to give a shout out to one of the earliest fandom, TV deaths, Tasha Yar. Star Trek killed off Tasha way before it was cool to kill off characters. And no one saw that one coming because the internet wasn’t what it is today… or even a thing at all. So there were no rumors surrounding her upcoming death. Or fan theories about. She was an upstanding crew member who went on an away mission to a planet with a tar monster. She was taken by the tar monster…goodbye Tasha Yar.
If this post has left you feeling a little depressed and nostalgic for characters long gone, then definitely don’t go back and watch the happy times before they died. I tried that with season 1 of Game of Thrones…trust me, it only made things worse.
Favorite Fictional Fashion Sense
I’m sure most of you, gentle readers, already know about my love of fashion. I studied fashion design in college and moved to New York expressly to pursue a career in fashion. I did my internship here and had big dreams of creating my own fashion label. As we all know, dreams change!
Here are the characters who’s fashion I love the most. I think the photos speak for themselves!!
#1 – Carrie Bradshaw
#2 – Daenarys Targaryen
#3 – Padme Amidala
#4 – The Pink Ladies
#5 – The Doctor
If you’ve seen this week’s episode of my web series, then you know about my Sci-Fi Debate Club. If you missed it, take a look…
We didn’t plan it. We didn’t mean for it to happen. But when two of more nerds are gathered together, nerdy…geeky…dorky debates are bound to ensue! And yes… they can get rather heated at times. We nerds are passionate about our fandoms (to say the least.) But I think we can all agree that we are united in the way we love. We love with intensity. We love with all we have.
Here are some of the hottest debates (not all are science fiction related) in the nerd community…
#1 -Star Wars vs. Star Trek
Do you prefer a galaxy far, far away full of rebels and stormtroopers, blasters and lightsabers, the Dark side and the Light side. Or do you tend to lean towards the order of Starfleet. The uniforms, the space exploration, the strange new worlds and civilizations? Personally, I don’t like to choose. I grew up with both of them in my life from a very young age and have never known a time when there wasn’t something to look forward to in the world of one or both of them. That being said, Star Wars does hold an extra special place in my heart. I cried when I saw the newest trailer for The Force Awakens and none of the Star Trek’s have elicited quite that response. But I do love both world greatly.
#2 – Would sex with Superman kill Lois Lane?
Gotta admit that I haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about this one. But I sorta think they’d find a way to make it work. Love will conquer all… even super powered nether regions.
#3 – Who’s the best Doctor?
This is a case of…why choose? Although, if I really did have to pick between all of Doctors that have ever been, I’d definitely choose the tenth Doctor, played by the incomparable David Tennant. (I guess I chose after all!)
#4 – Mac vs. PC or Android
This is more of a geeky tech debate. But it’s one that is had often and can get heated. Mac people are loyal and unswayed in their devotion to the apple. I used to be unflinchingly Mac oriented. And when it comes to computers, my loyalty stands. Now when it comes to phones…different story. 4 years ago when I finally upgraded to a smart phone, I was ready to take my place in the iPhone community, but alas, T-mobile did not carry iPhones at the time and that is the service my family uses. So I was forced to join the world of Samsung instead… and I’ve never looked back.
#5 – Bale vs. Keaton
What this boils down to is more of a best-Batman-ever-debate. Contenders: Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Kevin Conroy, Christian Bale & Ben Affleck (I guess we still have to wait and see about that last one.) I’m firmly in the Kevin Conroy camp. For those of you not in the know, Conroy voiced Batman on the beloved Batman: The Animated Series from the 90’s. The same series that hosted Mark Hamill’s icon voicing of the Joker (another popular debate among nerds: Best Joker ever.) Keaton comes in as a solid second for me (Batman Returns is one of my faves…I love Pfeiffer’s Catwoman!)
#6 – Marvel vs. DC
This is an issue where I really don’t want to take a stand. I could argue passionately for both. Though Marvel’s immersive world is just so unique and impressive right now. I grew up on the Batman and Superman animated series. And Superman has long been my favorite superhero of all time. Now as for favorite superhero team, I love The Avengers and I also really love X-Men. But my favorite villain is Harley Quinn. My imaginary superhero boyfriend is Captain America. But my imaginary best friend is Catwoman. See… I’m all over the place. I dip my toe in both pools and I just don’t wanna choose…so I won’t!
#7 – Game of Thrones vs. Lord of the Rings
This is a no brainer for me. One is a pop culture phenomenon. The show that brought dragons to the mainstream audience. That’s an amazing feat, to be sure. But the other is a piece of classic literature. A set of beloved stories that a parent can pass down to their children. An epic tale of hope and fellowship. An author who inspired the other so much that he went and added R’s in his name for that very reason. Any other argument is made invalid by that fact alone. (mic dropped…Liz out!)
#8 – Pirates vs. Ninjas
Ok… we have to talk first about where and why and in what time period are these pirates fighting the ninjas. Are they allowed to bring their pistols to the sword fight? Cause pirates fight dirty, while ninjas are all about tradition. Though my coworker just brought up a good point…the pirates would probably be inebriated for the fight. So there’s that.
#9 – Captain Kirk vs. Captain Picard
There is a greater debate along these lines, who’s the best Starfleet Captain of all? Are you a Kirk fan? A Picard follower? Is it Captain Sisko that really gets you? Perhaps Janeway is the lady captain for you? Or maybe….nope that’s it! (Sorry Scott Bakula… I love you, but Enterprise doesn’t count.) Personally I’m a Captain Picard girl. I was a child of the 80’s and a preteen of the 90’s. And my parents l-l-loved Star Trek: The Next Generation. We used to watch it together all the time. So there’s a great deal of nostalgia and warm fuzzies attached to Jean-Luc. And while I really enjoy all the other Star Trek series as well and think they have stellar captains at the helm, it’s Picard for me!
#10 – Did Han shoot first?
This one is less a debate and more of a sore spot for hardcore fans of Star Wars. See… here’s the story. Star Wars was released in 1977. Beautiful, iconic, practically perfect in every way! 20 years later, George Lucas remastered his masterpiece to include some new things. Including, but not limited to, the scene between Greedo and Han Solo in the Mos Eisley cantina. In the original, untainted version of Star Wars, Han shoots Greedo, killing him and thus ending their conversation. This gave Han a cold-blooded killer persona. One that the Maker did not intend for Han. So when the remastered editions came out, George took the chance to set the record straight and added CGI footage of Greedo shooting first, missing and then Han shooting and killing him afterwards. Fans were unhappy, to say the least (the very least.) In actuality, fans were pissed!! 20 years of believing something about their beloved hero only to have it changed? This isn’t the only thing about the remastered versions that would upset the fans. But George Lucas maintains that Greedo shot first, while fans insist the opposite. Han Solo himself (Harrison Ford) was asked about this nerd debate in a 2014 Reddit conversation. His response…”I don’t know and I don’t care.”
At the end of the day, we all love and love hard. So what are your thoughts on these very important and pressing issues in the world of nerdy things? Let me know in the comments below!! Even if we disagree, I still love to hear about it!
