Day 28: JEM from JEM and the Holograms

Out of all the characters I’ve chosen to cosplay this month, JEM is the one who is nearest and dearest to my heart. I used to watch the cartoon when I was a kid and dream of the day I could have pink hair and be a rock star!

Truly Outrageous!!

Pink!

When I was a kid, I hated pink, with a vengeance. My deep and utter loathing extended into middle school and high school and even into college. I thought myself to be a cool-colors kinda girl, gravitating to blues, greens and purples instead of pinks, oranges and yellows.

My insistence on the evils of a mere color were, to the modern me, a bit of a head-scratcher. Why did I hate it so much? As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve always loved Disney Princesses and they are not above wearing pink. There was a time when I eschewed all things girlie in favor of all the toys and franchises that my brother liked. Power Rangers (hello! Pink and Yellow Rangers, anyone?), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Rafael and Michaelangelo were always my favorite… red and orange), X-men (I loved Jubilee who wears…yellow) and then, of course, Star Wars.

Looking back, the signs were all there. I’m a warm-colors hurricane and there’s no getting around it. I’m not sure when I began to let the pinks and reds and yellows into my life. There was no turning point for me.

One day I hated pink, the next day…pink water bottle, pink yoga mat, pink notebook, pink skirt, pink dress, pink pillow, pink hair, etc. Pink had invaded and it was like I had finally accepted the real me. The pink-loving, Princess dreaming girlie girl who loves Star Wars and Marvel and Power Rangers, who has a sword collection and is way too prepared to survive a zombie apocalypse.

The problem was that I thought the two were mutually exclusive. Because girls like pink and don’t love action movies and boys hate pink and only talk about GI Joe, right? Of course, that’s not right. I wasn’t right back then. I just didn’t know better or really realize that there is only about .5% of the world’s population (maybe a little more) that cares about those traditional gender assignments. They care about girls being in “their place” and boys being in “their place.” (Whatever the hell that means.)

These are the same geniuses that are upset that there’s a female lead in the new Star Wars movie (actually they’re pissed about The Force Awakens and Rogue One.) They hate the idea that there will be ladies busting the Ghosts on the big screen soon. And they probably really, really hate all things pink.

The joke is on them because the world has changed and is changing everyday. Girls like whatever they want. Boys like whatever they want. We all share a planet, so fighting about it seems like a big waste of time, if you ask me!

So ladies…go bust those ghosts and kick ass in space and like pink if you want or if blue just butters your bread…like that! You do you.

Men…you do you too.

And to the .05% population of haters out there that just love to hate…you can do you too, cause no one else is gonna do ya with that attitude!

30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 21

Day 21 – Cher from Clueless

Clueless is one of those quintessential movies from the 90’s that defined a generation of teenagers. This modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, is both adorable and funny. Alicia Silverstone’s character, Cher manages to be both ditzy and intensely caring at the same time (when she wants to be.) When she falls totally, butt-crazy in love with her ex-step-brother, Josh… she not only ends up winning his heart, but she wins ours as well!!

I just got a hair cut and color, so I am completely ready to rock this California princess look!

30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 17

Day 17 – Jeannie from I Dream of Jeannie

Out of all the classic 50’s and 60’s TV shows, I think I Dream of Jeannie is probably my favorite one. Sure, it wasn’t exactly a tale of women’s liberation. But Barbara Eden as Jeannie was delightful and her never ending efforts to end up with Major Nelson made for very funny television. Plus she was pushing the fashion envelope at the time with her harem pants and crop top! Gotta love a genie with good fashion sense!

I won’t be saying “Yes, Master” all day, but I will try to grant as many wishes as are within my power! Making people happy sounds like fun! (within reason… don’t get fresh!)

Your wish is my command!

30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 12

Day 12: Agent Peggy Carter from Captain America: The First Avenger

Now that Marvel’s Agent Carter has gotten a season 2, we will be able to learn even more about Steve Roger’s lady love. Their love story may not have gotten a happy ending, but Peggy never let that sadness define her journey. She went on to be a founding member of S.H.I.E.L.D. And another all around bad ass female in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She’s strong and powerful, beautiful and vulnerable. Just like any really great character she has layers!

And her hair is as fantastic as she is!!

Sometimes the best hair for the job, is a woman’s!

Halloween Make-Up

Option #2: JEM!

As a child of the 80’s, I have a very deep and abiding love for all things bright, neon and garish!

So today I chose Jem.
Because let’s face it…
“Jem is excitment.
Jem is adventure.
Glamour and glitter,
Fashion and fame.
Jem is truly outrageous.
Truly, truly, truly
outrageous!”

I used a simple loose powder shadow in bright pink to create this look. And finished it with a glossy lip color is watermelon from NYC.

Day 9 – Secretary Barbie

Today’s inspiration is Secretary Barbie. And come on… you can admit it. You played with Barbie’s way past the appropriate age. Wait… That was just me? Ok that makes sense!

Regardless, Barbie was one of my favorite toys growing up. Despite the argument against her (unrealistic body image portrayal, no good jobs, no underwear) I loved her. She was pretty and had cool clothes. I bought into it. Still do! But Barbie has come a long way from just being a secretary. She’s a teacher, a lawyer, a designer, a dolphin trainer, a mermaid, the list goes on. So here’s to you Barbie!

To start this off, I curled my bangs up as much as they would go. This was a bit difficult with mine because my bangs have gotten pretty long.

image

Next I made a little bump in my hair right behind my bangs and tied a classic black Barbie bow in there.

image

Next I fluffed up my ponytail and curled the pieces so it was very full.

image

Finally I put on a pink dress, pink lipstick and tiny bow earrings. Very Barbie!!
