When I’m in the middle of a fitness series, especially one that has such a specific theme, I like to do all I can to stay in theme, as you could tell from my other blog posts this week. The foods I ate reflected Cinderella, the movies I watched, the music I listened to, the fitness activities I did and since I do consider myself a fashionable person, my fashion reflected Cinderella this week too. From my workout clothes to my nails and beyond.
Work, work, work, work, work…
On the steps of the palace…
Dancing through life….
After the ball…
Happily Ever After…
Is there something that helps you focus on your goals?
Perhaps you’ve seen the popular Instagram account @willitbeard and if you haven’t, prepare to be delighted by Pierce Thiot and his beard. Pierce posed the question “Will it Beard?” And has set out to see exactly what kind of everyday objects, foods, toys, etc will fit in his beard and stay in his beard. Check it out:
Pierce inspired me and gave me an idea for #12DaysofStarWars …
I call it the Bun Challenge and I’m asking you… #willitBUN
Here’s the gist: What can you strap to your head that will give you Princess Leia buns. Cinnamon buns (rather obvious), toy tires, buns made of Lego, buns made of cookie dough? Let your imagination take you away and make sure to post pictures to Instagram (@nerdinthesand) and Twitter (@nerdinthecity) with the hashtags #12DaysofStarWars and #WillitBun
I have an awesome giveaway and every picture you post and tag me in will get you an entry! Giveaway winner will be chosen on 12.8.16 at midnight! Happy Bunning!
Here’s the first one I came up with today…rather easy and obvious, but ya gotta start somewhere!
Bagel Buns (bagels fresh from Starbucks and yep…I bought 2 bagels just to pin to my hair! That really happened! It’s called dedication!)
You guys!!! Nerdy hair is back. I’m doing things a little differently this time around. Mainly because I’ve discovered that Florida does not like my hair when I attempt to do anything fun to it. Seconds after I step outside, every effort to look like I did something to my hair is instantly lost in the inevitable cloud of humidity.
That being said, I couldn’t let Florida kill Nerdy Hair! 😉 So I’m attempting to do tutorials and make these styles happen, but just a little ahead of time. That doesn’t mean I won’t try to do them in real time sometimes, just that it probably won’t look like I have.
Without further ado…here it is. 30 Days of Nerdy Hair!!
Day 1: Princess Leia from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Another brand new thing I’m trying…daily videos for the whole 30 days!!! Check it out:
It’s been a while since I’ve delved into the world of Nerdy hair and I have certainly missed it. It’s a hobby I never knew I was good and certainly wasn’t good at in high school despite desperately wishing I was back then. My hair was a menace in my younger years. A curly mop of unruly hair that I had no idea what do to with on a daily basis. Most days I wore it wet and continued to wet it throughout the day. Opting for the “I just got caught in a rainstorm” look. Very popular in the 90’s.
For those of you new to Nerd in the City, here’s a little back story. One day I was reading Shape magazine, as one does, when I came across the editor’s note. She wrote a piece about her hair and not understanding what to do with it. I could so relate! She said she decided to do something about this and challenged herself to 30 days of different hairstyles. Whether it was something as simple as a pony tail or as complicated as a side swept french braid, she was gonna do something different for 3o days to learn just what her hair could do.
I was inspired! What a proactive way to handle something that had plagued her and me for years! Me being me, I had to put a nerdy spin on it somehow and thus, 30 Days of Nerdy Hair was born.
This is my 6th series. And I’m doing things a little differently this time around. Usually it’s a mystery what I’ll choose from day to day, but I wanted to give you, beautiful nerds, a chance to join the challenge. I don’t know if you have trouble with your hair or are good at it. Either way, there are hairstyles in here that I bet you can do.
I’m posting all styles up front, so you know what to look for and if I can get on my game, I hope to do some tutorials as well so you truly can do them yourselves. Use the hashtag #30DaysofNerdyHair to join in and tag me directly @nerdinthesand on Instagram so I can see your wonderful creations. Feel free to use this as guidelines, suggestions, ideas and as always, please go off the map as often as you want to.
I hope you’ll try something new in September! For those of you who have been with me from the beginning, you might see the return of some favorites and I hope to improve on the past!
Sorry, gentlemen readers, this one is aimed at the ladies. But if you feel inspired to do a male version…hit me up! I’d love to see it!! 30 Days of Nerdy Hats perhaps??
February is the month of love. Which often illicits a “Yuck” and an eye roll from me. Instead of my usual “down with love” attitude, I decided instead to share the things I love with my instapeeps. And the best part is that a bunch of you joined my challenge and shared the things you loved with me! Check out the hashtag #NerdsLove for more from everyone and each individual hashtag below for more specific expressions of love.
Here’s another example of the Disney men and their awesome hair. Never let it be said that the Disney princesses have all the style!! Shang is the dashing captain of the Chinese army. He is tasked with preparing his troops, including Mulan in disguise, for battle against the menacing and rather large Hun army. Shang knows what he’s doing and knows that the last thing you want in your way when preparing for battle is your hair. So he keeps it nice and pulled back with a red cloth. I like a man who can be both trendy and practical!!!
Yes, Game of Thrones has ended for the season and any faithful watchers are probably still smarting from the events in that finale!! In an effort to remember the happy times, I went back and watched season 1 again. MISTAKE!!! Remember the happy times??? When was that? The first 20 minutes of episode 1 and then never again. There are many shocking, upsetting, unjust deaths on Game of Thrones. But none are quite like the death of Eddard “Ned” Stark. He is the Hand of the King, the just Lord of Winterfell, a father of 6 and a husband. His death sets events in motion that would change the course of the show and separate the beloved Stark family forever. (Trust me, don’t go back and watch. It’s straight up depressing.)
This was a really easy one! Some days you need a simpler hairstyle to get ya through the day. Ned Stark knew how to keep it simple. When you are Lord of Winterfell and have great responsibilities, then you really don’t need to be taking time to worry about your hair!
This one ended up being a favorite of the series. It’s just so much fun. My only beef with Glenn Close’s Nova Prime is that she was greatly underused in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One hopes that Nova Corps and especially Nova Prime, will have more of a prominent role in future Guardians installments. Especially with someone as epically capable and talented as Glenn Close. Either way, seeing her in the film is a treat in and of itself and this hair is sufficiently glamtastic!!!
I couldn’t possibly begin to explain how I did this one. I just started twisting and rolling and pinning and eventually it resembled Nova Prime’s hair. So I gave myself a big pat on the back after that one!!! Give it a try sometime and share those pictures!!
