It’s been a while since I’ve delved into the world of Nerdy hair and I have certainly missed it. It’s a hobby I never knew I was good and certainly wasn’t good at in high school despite desperately wishing I was back then. My hair was a menace in my younger years. A curly mop of unruly hair that I had no idea what do to with on a daily basis. Most days I wore it wet and continued to wet it throughout the day. Opting for the “I just got caught in a rainstorm” look. Very popular in the 90’s.

For those of you new to Nerd in the City, here’s a little back story. One day I was reading Shape magazine, as one does, when I came across the editor’s note. She wrote a piece about her hair and not understanding what to do with it. I could so relate! She said she decided to do something about this and challenged herself to 30 days of different hairstyles. Whether it was something as simple as a pony tail or as complicated as a side swept french braid, she was gonna do something different for 3o days to learn just what her hair could do.

I was inspired! What a proactive way to handle something that had plagued her and me for years! Me being me, I had to put a nerdy spin on it somehow and thus, 30 Days of Nerdy Hair was born.

This is my 6th series. And I’m doing things a little differently this time around. Usually it’s a mystery what I’ll choose from day to day, but I wanted to give you, beautiful nerds, a chance to join the challenge. I don’t know if you have trouble with your hair or are good at it. Either way, there are hairstyles in here that I bet you can do.

I’m posting all styles up front, so you know what to look for and if I can get on my game, I hope to do some tutorials as well so you truly can do them yourselves. Use the hashtag #30DaysofNerdyHair to join in and tag me directly @nerdinthesand on Instagram so I can see your wonderful creations. Feel free to use this as guidelines, suggestions, ideas and as always, please go off the map as often as you want to.

I hope you’ll try something new in September! For those of you who have been with me from the beginning, you might see the return of some favorites and I hope to improve on the past!

Channeling Katniss

On Saturday my partner in crime, Grace Kelle of Lean Girl’s Club, and I went for our first archery lesson at Big Apple Archery in Flushing Queens.

And while she always tries to find the fitness aspect in things like this, I’m on the lookout for the nerdities.

Whether the odds are in your favor and you’re channeling Katniss Everdeen or you’re into saving the world from an onslaught of evil aliens, a la Hawkeye of the Avengers, archery is fun for all.

Maybe the hooded hero is more your speed like the Green Arrow or you are saving Middle Earth from a pack of Orcs like Legolas. Perhaps you are a fierce Scottish red-head like Disney’s Merida.

Big Apple Archery may be a bit off the beaten path in Flushing Queens, but the instructors are patient, knowledgeable and funny. They let you shoot from a variety of distances and if you ask they will take some seriously bad ass looking pictures of you with your bow.

Don’t worry if you don’t hit the bullseye, it’s more about consistency than accuracy, both of which I lacked, by the way.

But the most important factor was fun! And that was certainly had. Grace and I got this deal off Living Social making it just $15 a person instead of $20, but honestly I would pay $20 to go back for more range time. It was that good!!

Plus this is definitely a skill that will come in handy when the apocalypse hits.

Day 28: Katniss Everdeen from Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Today I woke up late. After a day of eating and eating and games and volleyball and more eating I just couldn’t rally this morning. So I apologize for being a little lax. This is more of an inspiration than a duplication.

I did 2 braids across the top of my head like Katniss has.

Day 21: Primrose Everdeen from The Hunger Games

In honor of the opening of Hunger Games: Catching Fire today I chose the hair stylings of little sis, Prim.

As with Katniss, Prim rocks the side braid.

Day 13 – Katniss Everdeen

Today’s inspiration is Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games. The book turned movie turned crazy successful franchise.

Start on the side of your head that your bangs fall to. And then french braid all the way around to the other side. Reference day 11 as to why I cannot teach how to do this.

Give your bangs and a few wisps hanging out of the braid a little curl and you’re done. This one is very low-maintenance. Great for work or a walk in the park or defending your life against 11 angry children.
