Welcome to #TheSweatPack

I love fitness! I really do. I love the feel of straining dormant muscles (most especially dormant after the holidays.) I love taking classes at Soul Cycle and Title Boxing Club (where I am a member.) I love running by the lake in my neighborhood and lifting weights and jumping rope. I love to feel like I’ve pushed myself, truly pushed myself outside of my box and past my limits. The limits I set in my head. The ones that tell me that I can’t go any further or that I’m never gonna be good enough. Some days those limits win out…but most days I kick those limits in the ass!

#TheSweatPack running

My last blog post was about the tone of my New Year. I’m going to be living this year with a freedom that can only come when those limits are abandoned completely. Is there something that’s holding you back from working out or asking for a promotion or jumping out of a plane? Live Free!! What’s the alternative?

Maybe this doesn’t sound particularly nerdy to you. And if The Big Bang Theory is to be believed, then nerds don’t really choose to sweat much (unless they’re running away from bullies.)

But guess what…I’m a nerd! A BIG ONE (this much you already know.) I love fashion and Firefly. I love music and Marvel. I love sports and Star Wars. I don’t fit into the “normal” nerdy categories and stereotypes that are out there. Never have. That includes the stereotype that nerds aren’t sporty. I just have to beg to differ. Or beg for that stereotype to be buried once and for all. Because I believe that when it comes to nerdom…there is no “normal.”

#TheSweatPack

So, I’m partnering with the lovely Grace Kelle of Lean Girl’s Club and we are kicking the New Year off with some serious sweat!

Frankie had Deano…Emilio Estevez had Judd Nelson…and me? I have Gracie. No, we don’t live in the same city anymore. She’s still living that big city life up in the Apple and I’m beachin’ it up down in the F-L. But when it comes to #TheSweatPack, distance is only a number!

Liz Tailor and Grace Kelle are #TheSweatLPack

You’re wondering where you come in? Well, the beauty of #TheSweatPack is that it’s open to all. Come join Gracie: @leangirlsclub and me: @nerdinthesand over on Instagram and jump into our weekly challenges. It could be 1 picture a week, it could be 7 or 17 (if you’re the overachieving kind!) Wherever you are in your Sweat Pack journey, we want to meet you there!

Listen, if I can do it so can you! And probably way better than me anyways. So show us your sweat. Let it shine! Get up, get moving and get out of that little box!

This week #TheSweatPack is… taking The Stairs!!!

The Star Wars Song (This is Star Wars)

Here is the final song in my Star Wars Christmas Song Trilogy. Episode VI: The Star Wars Song (This is Star Wars)

Star Wars Christmas Song Trilogy

So…I  wrote these 5 years ago. Just biding my time till the right opportunity came around to record and share. And about a week before I’m ready to release… James Corden of The Late Late Show and Chris Hardwick of Nerdist release this together…

Imagine my immediate palm in the face. But I promise…this was written so long ago! And hey…let’s be honest, James should probably hire me to be on his musical writing staff! I could help! 😉

I hope you enjoy both James Corden/Chris Hardwick and my version of The Star Wars Song…

Once again I gotta thank the team that helped me do this…

Kevin Porter from Flash Grove Music for recording, mixing, arranging and all manner of music magic!

Jeremy Twachtman from Hallelujah Productions for making my vid for me!

Jessica Eriksen from Blue Moon Photography for taking all my promo pictures!

If you missed the other episodes of my song trilogy make sure to check out Leia, It’s Cold Outside and God Rest Ye, Merry Stormtroopers!

Don’t forget to share and like and pass it on. But most of all…Have yourself a Nerdy Little Christmas!!!

Hold the Holidays

Don’t get me wrong…I love Christmas. I do! I LOVE it a whole lot!
image
But I am just not ready for ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas programming (which starts on November 22nd, in case you were wondering.) Or Hallmark Channel’s Christmas movies (most of which seem to be Debbie Macomber specials) and which are already playing, by the way. Or how about KOST 103.5, a radio station in LA that is starting their Christmas music tomorrow…TOMORROW!
Starbucks has their Christmas blends and their red cups (which is all I have to say about that STUPID ‘controvery!’)
Walmart and American Girl are on my hit list for their rampant Christmas commercials (you know what you did!)

HELLO!!! Is anyone else still eating Halloween candy? Is anyone else just tying to keep up with the fact that Thanksgiving is coming? Nevermind Christmas and New Year’s and Valentine’s Day and Easter.

If I wasn’t so involved in social media (and enjoy it so much) I might consider going on strike.
What’s a girl gotta do to live in the moment?

The Christmas season used to be something I looked forward to. Something that I eagerly anticipated. Something that began as soon as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade ended and Santa came down the street.
image
That was when Christmas fever was allowed to begin. 1 month of excitement. 1 month of commercials. 1 month of TV specials and movies and music and parades and peppermint mocha choca lattes and such.

Can we go back to that? I’m not talking about the true meaning of Christmas. Please don’t misunderstand. I think it’s easy for people to misunderstand these days. In fact, it’s almost as if people are just looking for things to misunderstand. (Red cups anyone??!!)
image
*Photo from @arrowtwentytwo Instagram

The true meaning of Christmas is something that I love to celebrate and think about all year long. But commercialized Christmas? That has it’s place and time. And I just think the time hasn’t come yet.

Personally I’d just like to get through the week, much less the entire rest of 2015.
Who’s with me???

5 Things I Like About Winter

Today’s 5 Fandom Friday, brought to you by The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick are things you like about winter. This is a tough one for me. I actually hate winter with a deep, fierce passion! It’s mean and cold and it’s just brutal trying to get around the city. But this is a list of things I like about it. I guess that means I have to choose positive things, so here goes!

#1 – Flying Home

image

My family lives in sunny, sunny Florida. So one of my favorite things about the winter season is that I know I will be leaving the cold to fly south. This year it was a lovely 71 degrees on Christmas day. Now, that’s what I call Christmas!! I should be wearing flip flops… it just makes sense!

#2 – Christmas

image

Which leads me to the next thing I love about the winter. Christmas! Jesus’ Birthday! The season of giving. It’s the best holiday of all. Especially since my family dresses in themed costumes every year. So it’s basically Christmas with a little Halloween thrown in. I love going to Christmas Eve services and having breakfast at my Granny’s on Christmas morning. I love seeing my cousins and brothers and parents and aunts and uncles and grandparents. It’s such a happy time. (Made happier when there is no cold weather and no snow!)

#3 – My Birthday

image

32 years ago, a lovely thing happened on the day after Christmas. Yours truly was born into this world. And the world would never be the same again… cause I’m awesome! 😉 Winter is worth it all because of my birthday. I have always loved birthdays. And most years I  had elaborate parties and invited every person I ever knew in life. We’ve always been a Do-It-Yourself kinda family. (Why pay someone to do something when you can do it yourself?) One year we did our own homemade Glamour Shots. Complete with before and after pictures. I had a really elaborate Alice in Wonderland tea party one year (I was 25 years old!) Age never stopped my birthday fun. Every year we go to the Cheesecake Factory where we are able to be loud and boisterous and eat Cheesecake and just have a blast. It’s the best!!

#4 – Wearing Fuzzy Slippers

image

Last year for Christmas I got these amazing fuzzy slippers that are really only best when you are completely freezing. And I love that I can wear them all winter long. I live about 10 blocks away from the subway stop and on a blistery, winter night when I’m frozen all the way through, I love walking through the door and immediately hoping into these babies. They go best with flannel pajamas, a bowl of mac and cheese and a well thought out Netflix binge session!!!

#5 – Snail Mail

image
Photo found on Pinterest (contact for credit!)

Winter is really the only season in which I get a steady flow of mail. You know… the mailbox kind. And not just junk mail and bills and offers to sign up for a new Capitol One credit card. But real deal mail. Mail that I get excited to open and read. I have always loved getting mail!! It just makes me happy. It’s fun to get an envelope and not know what’s inside. Is it a picture of my friend’s new baby? Is it another da-gum wedding invitation? Is it money from my Gran? I don’t know!! And that is the best part. During the winter I am usually inundated with cards! Not only Christmas and Holiday cards, but Birthday cards too. I love taking a huge stack of mail out of my mail box and sorting out the good stuff! It’s such a joy.

So all in all there are some things to like about cold, gross winter. I guess it’s an important season to have in the mix, after all! What do you like about winter? Let me know in the comments below! And if you wanna send me some snail mail or receive some, I’d be happy to send you my address and take yours. Let’s be pen pals!! 😉

Happy winter, my lovely nerds!

Gifts I Want For Christmas

Today’s 5 Fandom Friday topic from The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick is Gifts I Want for Christmas. So here are a few things that speak directly to my nerdy little heart!

#1 – Maurader’s Map Leggings from Black Milk Clothing

13240d1f138831725c8d7656e98ea212

Black Milk Clothing has all kinds of nerdy treasures. But these are some of my favorites. Now if only they came with a Harry’s real life Marauder’s Map… that would just be nerdtastic!! Make sure to check them out!

#2 – Ms Marvel Tank from Her Universe

hun_mvl_msmarveltankfront_01_copy

Ashley Eckstein’s company, Her Universe is geared towards the nerdy lady in your life. They also have a wide selection of things from multiple fandoms. But with the news that Carol Danvers will be gracing the screen in a few short years, this tank is timely and fashionable!! Head over and see everything they have!

#3 – Star Trek Pajamas from Think Geek

16bf_star_trek_tng_pajama_set_grid

Think Geek is an equal opportunity nerd atelier. They have things for all genders. Including these cozy pajamas made for space travelers the world over! Get your pair today.

#4 – Dirty Dancing Tee from The Nerd Machine

DDP021

Ok, I know that Dirty Dancing isn’t nerdy. But the amount of times I’ve seen it and the fact that I can quote the entire thing makes me a nerd for it. Plus Zachary Levi’s company, The Nerd Machine has an entire Cinema Series available. So maybe Dirty Dancing isn’t your jam. But perhaps Top Gun or Young Frankenstein are more your speed. Check out everything they have.

#5 – Lightsaber Earrings from Etsy shop: LandAWestDesign

il_570xN.611002362_q05g

For me, Star Wars is the fandom of all fandoms. So these adorable Lego lightsaber earrings are exactly the ticket! Plus I love to support hand crafted businesses on Etsy. Check out more from LandAWestDesign.

What have you asked Santa for this year??

Top 5 Christmas Songs to Spread Cheer

fandom.5.friday

Happy Friday, my lovely nerds!! Today’s topic for blogversation from The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick is My 5 Favorite Christmas Songs to Spread Cheer. I actually tend to listen to more melancholy, pensive Christmas music for some strange reason. “Where Are You Christmas?” by Faith Fill,  “Mary, Did You Know” by Penatonix, “Christmas Song” by Dave Matthews, “Some Children See Him” by James Taylor.

But when it comes to spreading Christmas cheer, these are the ones I like to listen to:

#1 – Joy To The World (Unspeakable Joy) by Chris Tomlin

4eec789401eb82a88136f5408e29cfc9

I love plain, old Joy to the World as much as the next person. But this version is so fun and uplifting. It just makes you want to raise your hands and praise God for the holiday season. Especially because the holidays can easily become stressful and all about traveling and presents and weather and such. I like to put this song on and just jam out to words that express what Christmas is really about. And Chris Tomlin is such a dynamic worship leader that you can’t help but smile while listening to it.

#2 – Snow by Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney

e14e815ba493801cc694a4f252f0736e

Ok, I hate snow. But I loooove the movie White Christmas. It is one of the movies I watch every year to get me in the spirit. Danny Kaye, Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney singing about Snow is one of my favorite moments in this musical. (Sisters is my other favorite moment!) Yes, there are 4 people in the picture, but Vera-Ellen was not a singer. So Rosemary Clooney did some of the vocals for her while Trudy Stevens dubbed the rest. Vera-Ellen was a dancer though and an amazing one at that!! If you’ve never seen and love happiness and singing and warm fuzzy feelings than go watch it today.

#3 – Christmas Is All Around by Bill Nighy

dbcc3c16da6158e5a549979ccdea68cd

Love Actually may be a Christmas movie, but it’s one I tend to watch year round cause it fits into the romantic comedy genre. But Christmas is All Around is a song that is fun and a little silly and perfect for spreading holiday cheer.

#4 – Welcome Christmas from How the Grinch Stole Christmas cartoon

How the Grinch Stole Christmas courtesy Cartoon Network

Speaking of holiday cheer, Welcome Christmas is a song that just creates all sorts of warm fuzzy feelings. Perhaps it’s because I’ve always had a soft spot for cartoons. Perhaps it’s the Dabu Dorays and the Fabu Forays. Perhaps it’s all those Who’s coming together to show that what they really care about is being together, not all the toys and trimmings and material things. Whatever it may be, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a classic that I’ve been watching since I was little and is one I look forward to sharing with my own kids one day.

#5 – Feliz Navidad by Michael Buble feat. Thalia

feb052f3e3d5378e3640e378938a0f15

There is one voice that just immediately gets me in the Christmas spirit. He could be singing Blue Skies or Fever and it’d still make me wanna trim a tree. Michael Buble just has one of those melt in your heart voices and his Feliz Navidad featuring Thalia is fun and jazzy and something you can dance to as you bake Christmas cookies and drink that egg nog!

What songs get you ready for Christmas?

5 Characters I’d Invite to My Thanksgiving Feast

Today’s blog topic from The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick is about characters I’d invite to Thanksgiving. Before I begin, you should know a little about my family. We are a very tight knit group of people. We uphold many unique holiday traditions and we are also what you might call… a little quirky. With that being said, adding any more personalities into the mix could be tricky. But we’ve always been a family that welcomes new comers and vagabonds alike with open arms and plates of turkey. So here is my list of characters I’d like to invite to Thanksgiving. From TV to Books to Muppets to Movies, my choices come from all over the place.

#1 – Swedish Chef from The Muppets

29cd9524e046a9443b97f8fce9fb04e0

“Gersh gurndy morn-dee burn-dee!”

My family is talented at a great many things. One of them is cooking. So it’s not like we need any help in the kitchen. But I’ve always loved the Swedish Chef from The Muppets. His Mock Swedish dialect and his can-do attitude would make for an upbeat positive guest at our Thanksgiving Feast. Plus we love to add multi-cultural elements to our holiday traditions. So why not add one of his famous dishes to the menu? Like his Flapjacks, Fishie Chowder, Japanese Cake, Frog Legs or his Squirrel Stew. It’s not so much the end result as it is his process that would be the most entertaining.

#2 – Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice

87c9ffd098fbf811a75888b03169cad9

“She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me, and I am in no humor at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men.”

Sure, he’s haughty and proud. And sure… those are qualities a modern woman would rare to never tolerate in a man. But he’s Mr. Darcy!! And aside from providing some delicious eye candy (Colin Firth is the Darcy I’d choose), he can also provide sparkling conversation when prodded and pushed. Maybe it’s an odd choice, but I’d love a traditional Regency Era Thanksgiving Feast complete with reel and musical concert. Perhaps a little impromptu singing might be in order. And if Mr. Darcy was in attendance you could almost guarantee that something exciting would happen.

#3 – Lady Grantham from Downton Abbey

225px-Violet

“I knew this family was approaching disillusion, I wasn’t aware that illusion was already upon us.”

My Grandmother, Flora, is the matriarch of my family. We have Thanksgiving at her house every year. She is strong willed and stubborn and I think I get a lot of my gumption straight from her. She reminds me a lot of the Dowager Countess of Grantham, Lady Violet Crawley. You might wonder, with one Lady of the house already in attendance, why invite another. I imagine that if Lady Violet and Lady Grandmother Flora were ever to meet, they would either become best friends and while away the hours playing bridge, or they would become sworn enemies and take turns delivering crushing set downs. Either way, I think it would make for a most entertaining Thanksgiving Feast!

#4 – Genie from Aladdin

38c338e770a1c56c12c1ed928af8f42d

“You ain’t never had a friend like me!”

A genie is always handy to have around. You never know when disaster could strike and if you had a magical genie of the lamp then crisis would immediately be averted. A genie is useful, but Genie is a delight. Genie has long been my very favorite Disney character. Voiced to perfection by the late Robin Williams, he is caring and funny and the life of the party. He will always be welcome at my Thanksgiving table!

#5 – Lucy Ricardo from I Love Lucy

9668fdbf9cac2fa7461845d71ef7963d

“I may not be able to understand what you say when you say it, but before you say it, I can understand what you’re going to say perfectly!”

This one is for my sister-in-law. She is an avid Lucy fan. Who isn’t! (But she really is!) I think Lucy would round out this quintuplet of Thanksgiving guests. Accident prone and ridiculously goofy, Lucy is always trying to do right, yet always managing to mess things up. I’m not saying she’d drop the turkey, burn the mashed potatoes and end up with pumpkin pie on her face… but it would be worth the invite to see just what might happen!

Happy (less than a week till) Thanksgiving to you all. Who would you invite?
