Day 18: Van Pelt from Jumanji

JUMANJI! Who else desperately wanted to find the Jumanji game and open up their own jungle Pandora’s box as a kid? No? Just me then?

This is one of those timeless Robin Williams movies that I used to LOVE watching and now find it quite difficult to watch, only because all Robin Williams movies make me hella emotional. And while I am interested in the new Jumanji as a movie that looks funny, (and I always enjoy the Rock) for me…there is one Jumanji and one Jumanji only and it has the incomparable Robin Williams.

What about you? Did you see the trailer for the new Jumanji? What did you think?

Ps…I really like saying the word Jumanji! Here’s my take on the OG Jumanji villain and super baddie, Van Pelt (I left the big guns at home):

Day 14: Aladdin

Aladdin is one of my all time favorite Disney movies. It’s neck and neck with Lion King for me. I must have watched it over 1,000 times as a kid and still continue to watch it as an adult (though since the death of Robin Williams it’s been much harder to watch it without crying uncontrollably!)

Which is your favorite Disney movie? We all have one (or 4.)

Favorite Fictional Teachers

#1 – Mr. Feeny

image

This one is a no brainer. Growing up there was one teacher we all wanted to have and that was Feeeeeeny! Fee-hee-hee-heeeny! He cared about his students with crucial life lessons and was always there when they needed him. Always! From elementary school through college. Now that’s dedication!

#2 – Minerva McGonagall

image

Any good teacher uses a mixture of love and tough love to teach. Professor McGonagall is the perfect example of this. She genuinely cares about all her students and looks the other way if the situation calls for it. And sure, you’re not supposed to play favorites, but Minerva always had a soft spot for the boy who lived and his two best friends. In the final film of the franchise, it’s that moment when Minerva McGonagall calls for everyone to defend Hogwarts that makes me cry every time! I always wished to go to magical school and be taught be her!

#3 – John Keating

image

Good teachers teach. Great teachers inspire! And there are few fictional teachers as downright inspiring as Robin William’s John Keating from Dead Poets’ Society. ‘O Captain, My Captain’ I’d stand on my desk and follow you anywhere!

#4 – Mr. Holland

image

As a musician, I always had a special place in my heart for Mr. Holland, played by Richard Dreyfuss in the movie Mr. Holland’s Opus. Sure Mr. Holland wasn’t perfect. There was that whole, almost had an affaor with a student thing. But hey, even teachers aren’t perfect. This film had poignant life lessons and a truly delicious soundtrack. Win, win!

#5 – Corey Matthews

image

Yes, the same Corey Matthews from the beloved 90’s TGIF sitcom, Boy Meets World. Corey and Topanga are back with two adorable kids of their own and it’s their daughter Riley Matthews that’s learning about the world now. And just like Feeny before him, Corey has become the kid’s teacher, spirit guide and emotional counselor. Following them from elementary school into middle school (and here’s hoping he continues through college just like Feeny.) That’s not the only similarity to my #1 favorite fictional teacher! It seems like Corey really was paying attention in class all those years because he makes an excellent teacher and fans of Boy Meets World will love where they take these characters. (Plus Shawn comes back!!! And Eric and Angela and Mr. and Mrs. Matthews and yes…even Feeny returns a couple times.) It’s definitely a must watch!!

Honorable Mentions
I actually have a lot of teachers in my family. My mom is a preschool director. Dad teaches middle school (bless his heart.) Granny was an art teacher. Grandma was a teacher too. One of my best friends is a damn fine high school teacher. If one of them had been my teacher when I was a kid (obviously my parents taught me..but you know what I mean) then maybe I would have been a better student than I was.

Who do you wish had taught your classes? Or is there a real teacher who inspired you?

Favorite Funko Figures

Funko

To quote Charlton Heston in The Ten Commandments… “Can a man choose from among the stars of the sky?” Choosing merely 5 Pop! figures seems mean. Someone is gonna be left out. Someone is gonna get their little plastic feelings hurt. But the rules are clear. 5 must be chosen, so here we go. Thank to The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick for making it “so easy” each week! 😉

#1 – Harley Quinn

Harley_Quinn_POP_GLAM_large

If you don’t know how much I love Harley Quinn by now, I wonder if you ever knew me at all! And incidentally this is the only Funko Figure I actually own. I got her for Christmas this year. So she is my 1st and favorite!! And I always preferred classic Harley over Arkham Asylum Harley, though she is awesome too! Pair her with the classic Joker Funko figure and you got yourself a DC party!!

#2 – Yoda

02_Yoda_POP_GLAM_c5f21b31-8200-41af-a8a3-7875ee9e7ac4_large

Another thing you should know if you’ve been keeping track, my deep and abiding love for Star Wars. So next up has to be a Star Wars figure. And this Yoda is just about the cutest thing ever in life! Though you really couldn’t go wrong with any of the Star Wars Funko figures. Each one is special and I want them, need them, have to have them all!!

#3 – Genie

3198_Disney_series_5_Genie_POP_GLAM_large

Genie has long been my very favorite Disney character of all time. Not only because he is just awesome in general, but also because of the fabulous vocal stylings of the late Robin Williams. So many of the Funko figures are mouthless and that would just be wrong for the Genie. His smile holds the happiness of a thousand suns! And if you aren’t smiling just from the sight of this guy… I worry about you, I really do!

#4 – Professor X

4468_X-Men_-_Professor_X_hires_large

Ok I had never seen this one before today, but I love it! The eyebrows are everything. I don’t often have a hard time choosing a favorite X-Man (Gambit every time) but this figure brings out all the love I have for the Professor, leader of the misfit mutants. So… yeah… this one makes the list!

#5 – Marty McFly and the Delorean

Delorian_POP_GLAM_large

Ummm…. do I really need to explain why this one is just amazing and necessary to have on any nerd shelf? If you need it explained to you, then you are clearly in the wrong place. Go away and come back when you have learned your lesson! 😉

Honorable Mention – Jessica Rabbit

3550_Roger_Rabbit_-_Jessica_Rabbit_GLAM_large

Ok I’m cheating and picking a 6th figure. Because look at her! She’s awesome. I love J. Rabs. She’s sassy and way too sexy for a cartoon character and she just loves that Roger with all her heart. Gotta love and respect that. Plus that hair curtain is too fierce not to earn an honorable mention!

What’s your favorite? Do you have any? Do you want any? Do you know what I’m talking about? If not, go to your room and think about what you’ve done! (Love you… mean it)

5 Characters I’d Invite to My Thanksgiving Feast

Today’s blog topic from The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick is about characters I’d invite to Thanksgiving. Before I begin, you should know a little about my family. We are a very tight knit group of people. We uphold many unique holiday traditions and we are also what you might call… a little quirky. With that being said, adding any more personalities into the mix could be tricky. But we’ve always been a family that welcomes new comers and vagabonds alike with open arms and plates of turkey. So here is my list of characters I’d like to invite to Thanksgiving. From TV to Books to Muppets to Movies, my choices come from all over the place.

#1 – Swedish Chef from The Muppets

29cd9524e046a9443b97f8fce9fb04e0

“Gersh gurndy morn-dee burn-dee!”

My family is talented at a great many things. One of them is cooking. So it’s not like we need any help in the kitchen. But I’ve always loved the Swedish Chef from The Muppets. His Mock Swedish dialect and his can-do attitude would make for an upbeat positive guest at our Thanksgiving Feast. Plus we love to add multi-cultural elements to our holiday traditions. So why not add one of his famous dishes to the menu? Like his Flapjacks, Fishie Chowder, Japanese Cake, Frog Legs or his Squirrel Stew. It’s not so much the end result as it is his process that would be the most entertaining.

#2 – Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice

87c9ffd098fbf811a75888b03169cad9

“She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me, and I am in no humor at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men.”

Sure, he’s haughty and proud. And sure… those are qualities a modern woman would rare to never tolerate in a man. But he’s Mr. Darcy!! And aside from providing some delicious eye candy (Colin Firth is the Darcy I’d choose), he can also provide sparkling conversation when prodded and pushed. Maybe it’s an odd choice, but I’d love a traditional Regency Era Thanksgiving Feast complete with reel and musical concert. Perhaps a little impromptu singing might be in order. And if Mr. Darcy was in attendance you could almost guarantee that something exciting would happen.

#3 – Lady Grantham from Downton Abbey

225px-Violet

“I knew this family was approaching disillusion, I wasn’t aware that illusion was already upon us.”

My Grandmother, Flora, is the matriarch of my family. We have Thanksgiving at her house every year. She is strong willed and stubborn and I think I get a lot of my gumption straight from her. She reminds me a lot of the Dowager Countess of Grantham, Lady Violet Crawley. You might wonder, with one Lady of the house already in attendance, why invite another. I imagine that if Lady Violet and Lady Grandmother Flora were ever to meet, they would either become best friends and while away the hours playing bridge, or they would become sworn enemies and take turns delivering crushing set downs. Either way, I think it would make for a most entertaining Thanksgiving Feast!

#4 – Genie from Aladdin

38c338e770a1c56c12c1ed928af8f42d

“You ain’t never had a friend like me!”

A genie is always handy to have around. You never know when disaster could strike and if you had a magical genie of the lamp then crisis would immediately be averted. A genie is useful, but Genie is a delight. Genie has long been my very favorite Disney character. Voiced to perfection by the late Robin Williams, he is caring and funny and the life of the party. He will always be welcome at my Thanksgiving table!

#5 – Lucy Ricardo from I Love Lucy

9668fdbf9cac2fa7461845d71ef7963d

“I may not be able to understand what you say when you say it, but before you say it, I can understand what you’re going to say perfectly!”

This one is for my sister-in-law. She is an avid Lucy fan. Who isn’t! (But she really is!) I think Lucy would round out this quintuplet of Thanksgiving guests. Accident prone and ridiculously goofy, Lucy is always trying to do right, yet always managing to mess things up. I’m not saying she’d drop the turkey, burn the mashed potatoes and end up with pumpkin pie on her face… but it would be worth the invite to see just what might happen!

Happy (less than a week till) Thanksgiving to you all. Who would you invite?

Let’s Start Talking About It

Robin Williams

Today the world lost a wonderful and talented actor to a horrible disease (if the reports that are coming in are true.) And it has effected me more than I thought it would. The sad truth is that you can never perceive the internal struggles a person goes through. We saw his humor and his laughter and we thought everything was fine. We loved his movies and television shows. I grew up watching him in so many things like Aladdin, Hook, Dead Poet’s Society, Mrs. Doubtfire and so many more. My parent’s generation watched him in Mork and Mindy.

Depression is a slow and silent demon. It whispers in your ear and tells you very convincing lies about yourself. You’re not good enough. You can’t do it anymore. You have no worth. I have friends who have struggled with this disease. I’ve had periods in my life when I have struggled with it myself.

This is a disease that we don’t talk about. We, as a culture, expect people to have it all together and when they don’t, we judge them. We have to empower people to seek help for not only the detectable diseases like cancer or the common diseases like the flu.

Counseling and therapy… these are the medicines we need to embrace. And it has to be okay to seek these forms of “medication.” Until they are no longer judged, until the stigma is erased then tragedies like this will keep happening. And we will have let down those who are suffering and need us to understand!

If you are struggling with depression or know someone who is, please seek help!!! Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255. Head to your local church and ask for help. Call a friend… email me. Do what you need to be ok!!!

Non-profits like To Write Love On Her Arms are trying to change the way we look at this disease. Support them and their efforts.

The Butler

image

It is impossible to watch Lee Daniels’ The Butler and not shed a tear. It is impossible to walk out of the theater and not be changed.
The Butler is a drama, an action film, a love story between a father and son. It made me cry (about every 15 minutes) and it made me think. In fact, it’s ability to make you think is perhaps the most important and enduring reason to go see this film.
image

I have to confess something. I am guilty of ignorance. I look at our time and think that these issues must be long past because it is 2013 and i think ‘how can bigotry and racism survive our modern age?’ I am guilty of indifference in an age when these events seem to be taking place all over again because I’m too busy or too concerned with my own life. I’m guilty of knowing that our country is currently facing hard truths depicted in this very film. Truths that, for too long, have been ignored or swept under the carpet. Or worse believed to be corrected.

Do you realize we are a mere 50 years out from these events in our country’s history? And only a 150 years out from slavery itself. That is baffling!

image
Screenwriter, Danny Strong (nerds-you will best know him as Jonathan from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has crafted a tale of truths. An honest portrayal of our history that desperately needs to be told and remembered.

Forrest Whitaker, Oprah, Cuba Gooding Jr, Lenny Kravitz, Robin Williams, James Marsden, Alan Rickman, John Cusack, Liev Schreiber and so many more turned out powerful performances.

In an industry obsessed with beauty and the bottom dollar, this film is beautiful for a different reason. The beauty comes out of the ugliness of our country’s history. The reality of events that happened, not so long ago.
image

I walked out of the theater moved and confused. I felt a strange dicotomy of both shame and pride in this country.

Today is the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. And this is the movie we need to be watching!! Especially now. Especially today.

Go see it.
