Day 18: Van Pelt from Jumanji

JUMANJI! Who else desperately wanted to find the Jumanji game and open up their own jungle Pandora’s box as a kid? No? Just me then?

This is one of those timeless Robin Williams movies that I used to LOVE watching and now find it quite difficult to watch, only because all Robin Williams movies make me hella emotional. And while I am interested in the new Jumanji as a movie that looks funny, (and I always enjoy the Rock) for me…there is one Jumanji and one Jumanji only and it has the incomparable Robin Williams.

What about you? Did you see the trailer for the new Jumanji? What did you think?

Ps…I really like saying the word Jumanji! Here’s my take on the OG Jumanji villain and super baddie, Van Pelt (I left the big guns at home):

Day 10: California Mountain Snake from Kill Bill

I’ve done it. I’ve finally gone and joined the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. Don’t try to change my mind. The minute I put the eye patch on, I knew that my destiny was set. Can you blame me and my nerdy hair? We can’t help it!

Day 27: Catwoman from Batman

Many women have donned the famous catsuit, but none were ever so sexy as Julie Newmar in the 1960’s Batman TV show. Michelle Pfeiffer’s is a really close second. Maybe it was really good acting, or maybe that was just Julie Newmar being Julie Newmar. She is in one of my favorite movies of all time, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. And in that movie, you can totally see the Catwoman coming out at times, and that was well before she would play Catwoman on TV. Some girls just have it!

I’ve always thought of myself as way too silly to be sexy, but I’m definitely channeling my inner cat for this one!!!

Obviously I have a week spot for Joker’s criminally insane girlfriend, Harley Quinn. Darth Vader follows at a close second. I love to laugh and I used to watch Batman: The Animated Series back in the 90’s (who are we kidding, I still watch it!) And Harley always cracked me up. So yeah, she gets my vote over the baddest of the bad, Darth Vader himself. It doesn’t have to make sense. ūüėČ Life is a little more fun when it doesn’t, in fact!!

Incidentally, if you’ve never watched Batman: The Animated Series, then I suggest you do it… now!! And I am personally crying for your lost childhood, cause this series is amazing and also has Mark Hamill doing t

Merry Christmas to All!

If you’ve seen this week’s episode of my web series, then you’d know that my family and I love traditions. And we have a lot of unique things we do to celebrate Christmas. (If you haven’t seen it yet, CLICK HERE.)

Whenever I tell people what we do on Christmas, I get 1 of 2 reactions. People are either really confused and borderline appalled… “You do WHAT on Christmas? Well, I nevah!” Or else they want to join in the fun… “Is your family looking to adopt a 27 year old from Sacramento?” (PS, the answer is always yes. Everyone is welcome with our family.)

It all started 6 years ago when my brothers, my cousins and I wanted to take some photos for our family’s Christmas presents. And instead of going to a JCPenny’s and taking boring, “normal” family portraits, we decided to get dressed up in Victorian garb and take pictures in our Granny’s 143 year old historical home, Eastbank.

When we took a look at the photos together we realized a few things. #1. How much fun we had. #2. How much fun we all could have if we did it again at Christmas. and #3. How much more fun it would be if we had a different theme every year. And why not start with Harry Potter.

As often happens in our family, things spiraled from there. Next thing we knew, a green screen was put up, a costume contest was started and friends and neighbors started showing up at our door in costume to join the fun. And let me tell you… it’s a lot of fun!! The best part is that every member of my family gets it. We are all a bunch of nerds. Once one of us gets into something we start to share it and then it spreads like wildfire. My mom read the¬†Harry Potter¬†books and fell in love with them. Then she recommended them to me and my brother. Next we told our cousin and aunt that they had to read them as well. And by then it was all over. We were a family full of Potterheads. Which is why we picked Harry Potter as the theme for our first themed family Christmas.

And the rest is history, Narnia (2010), Star Wars (2011), Lord of the Rings (2012), Doctor Who (2013), Superheroes and Villains (2014) and next year we will have Star Trek Christmas.

The Best and Brightest: Captain America 2

I know Captain America 2 is old news by now, but I went to see it for a second time this week and realized I hadn’t blogged about it yet. So here goes…

Captain America is my very favorite Avenger. He represents the best in all of us. He is also¬†the Avenger with the most honest and true heart. And Marvel is at it’s best when it displays an equal amount of action and heart (infused with a seriously epic soundtrack! Provided here by Henry Jackman.) Cap has friends in high and low places and knows just when to call on each. He may be in the dark about what’s going on in the big picture but he doesn’t let that stop him from making the best decisions with knowledge he does have. And when put to the test, Cap always comes out on the side of truth, justice and… you know the rest!

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers / Captain America, in Captain America The Winter Soldier

Also, this was the first time I actually liked Black Widow for more than just her ability to kick serious ass. Scar-Jo generally comes off as slutty secretary (though a ass kicking one at that)¬†to me, but when heroes go on the lam, there is a certain vulnerability that comes with it that was delightful to watch. Cap, Black Widow and Nick Fury all are “taken down” (we all know they’ll get back up again) by S.H.I.E.L.D. and the sinister efforts of Hydra. They are each confronted with the realities of a world without restraint. Without checks and balances. An agency that believes it can make preemptive decisions with no consequences. What happens when that agency is one you are working for. What happens when that agency is the very thing that saved you. Which side do you choose? Great concepts to explore and deeper than bad guy vs good guy!

Natasha Romanoff

And don’t even get me started on Sebastian Stan!! His Winter Soldier presents¬†the perfect dichotomy to offset Cap’s righteous do-good attitude. The Winter Soldier has also been told that he is fighting for the better side. He too has been lied to. Bucky Barnes¬†is equal parts hard hitting assassin and tortured soldier just following orders. The best villains (in my opinion) are the ones that we wish we could save. The ones we still see that glimmer of good in. The ones who push that aside and end up becoming evil anyways. The Lex Luthors (Smallville style, just wants to be friends with Clark and know his secrets), the Loki’s (only wants to be loved and accepted by his father), the Darth Vaders (redemption comes when his son is put in mortal danger), The Walter White’s (trying to good for his family till he realizes he enjoys being bad and embraces it.) Villains with depth and with layers. And The Winter Soldier may as well be an onion. Cause layers… he’s got em!

First shot I've seen of the Winter Soldier from Captain America 2...he looks so badass!!

All the other players in the game brought it as well. Cobie Smulder’s Agent Maria Hill was back and in the thick of the secrets. Now that HIMYM has ended, there should be a place for her over at ABC on Agents of SHIELD, especially now that it is getting unmissable!! Because her character is a great addition to the Marvel Universe. And anytime you throw Emily VanCamp into the mix… you’ve made a good choice. She’s great at duplicity. Turn on Revenge and see just how good. VanCamp’s Sharon Carter is the niece of Cap’s first love, Peggy Carter. Can’t wait to see the progression of her character! Anthony Mackie’s Falcon is a great side kick for Cap. He stands on his own two feet and compliments Cap’s dynamic at the same time. He’s exactly what you want from a side kick. So much good to talk about. Robert Redford as the baddie at the helm of the Hydra revolution is pure logical evil and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nicholas J. Fury has never been better as the dead and revived secret keeping agent in charge of the good guys.

Spoilers…

Let’s discuss the easter eggs they threw our way. Anyone else get super excited when they mentioned Steven Strange? Or how about the tag in the middle of the credits with “the twins.” A.k.a… Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch. Epic!! Cannot wait to see them debuted in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

While other franchises lose power as they continue to beat the proverbial dead horse of sequel after sequel, Marvel just gets better with age. And I would put Captain America 2 at the top of the stand alone Avengers films. Only eclipsed by Avengers itself (cause dude… all Avengers are better than just one. But in Caps case… only by a little.)

The Pinterest Wormhole

Have you ever got caught in the inevitable Pinterest wormhole? You know what I’m talking about. One little picture of Tom Hiddleston’s face and you are knee deep in pinning every expression he’s ever made. Which leads you to that one photo of him and Benedict Cumberbatch together. Which is just about the most perfect man sandwich ever invented in life.

Two of my most favorite people ever(: Tom Hiddleston and Bennie Cumberbatch....

Of course, once you are in the land of Cumberbatch you end up with a brand new board called “I am Sherlocked” because one pin of that handsome face is not enough. And then you’ve brought Martin Freeman into the mix. Which brings you around to The Hobbit. Soon you have a board called “Over the Misty Mountain” which brings in Dominic Monaghan (and leads to a board called “The Hatch“), Richard Armitage (and a board aptly titled “Sherwood Forest“), and Ian McKellan which reminds you of how much you love wizards!! And once wizards enter the mix, you can’t go on in life without creating a board called “The Boy Who Lived.”

That is a ticking time bomb of new boards about to explode on the Pinterest-sphere. Then you’re just pinning left and right (3 hours have now gone by and you’ve forgotten to eat.) Once you’ve pinned Potter you say to yourself, “There are so many other fandoms I love that are not yet represented.”

Then comes more boards with titles like “1.21 Gigawatts,” “007,” “Glitch in the Matrix,” “We Named the Dog Indiana,” “Timey-Wimey,” “Walkers,” “Stormborn,” “Shiny,” “Welcome to the Hellmouth.” And so on. Being the gigantic nerd you are, you need a “Star Trek” and a “Star Wars” board. Fandom is not complete without these two… duh!!

All of sudden you think to ¬†yourself (cause there is no human in sight amid all this pinning) “What about superheroes? They aren’t represented yet either. That’s not even fair of me.” So you come up with boards like “DC vs. Marvel (everyone wins)” and “The Evil League of Evil.” And soon you find that perfect picture of Loki smiling with that devilishly handsome face of his and somehow you’ve ended up right back to pinning the many grins of Tom Hiddleston.

Just gradually more mischievous. And there's still people who don't get this fandom. bwaahaha

The circle is now complete. And an entire day has wasted away… but if we’re being honest with ourselves… do we really think wasted is the proper word? Nope!

Tomorrow let’s start with a young Harrison Ford and see where that takes us!! The possibilities are endless.

Young Harrison Ford

PS… I’m not even kidding. Head over to my Pinterest profile to explore the many wormholes that await you. And happy pinning!
