Game of Thrones Fitness Challenge (Guest Post)

Game of Thrones fitness challenge season premiere HBO guest blog post

by: Johnson Reis

With the upcoming seventh season set to premiere this weekend, I’m not here to just prepare you for what’s about to go down as the most exciting time in television history, but also in terms of your training routine. Counting down seven kingdoms, three dragons, and a plethora of characters, tuning in to this globally popular HBO show will put your stamina and stress levels to the test while having plenty of fun in the process!

While it’s true that we’re living in a digital age, finding motivation from fictional and real life characters we see on-screen isn’t a quite as new of a trend as you may think.

While some look at inspirational individuals, others look to television shows and/or films for characters they can relate and/or aspire to. We watch movies such as 300 or X-Men, which instantly sparks an interest in us to achieve that Leonidas or Logan physique. When it comes to TV shows, there are the likes of Game of Thrones, in which characters do not only embody mental but also physical strength.

For me, watching a single episode of Game of Thrones (GoT) is like doing three sets of ten burpees. Due to the unpredictable nature of the show, it gets our heart rate up, leaving us on the edge of our seats in the process. In more ways than one, these are essential factors that come in handy in our home workout.

If you also happen to be a diehard GoT fanatic, I’m sharing with you a Game of Thrones-inspired workout ideal to get ready for the impending season premiere.

It integrates an array of exercises into the show, coming up with a viable training regimen you can easily do at home. Think of it this way: you’ll no longer be pegged as a “couch potato”, as you get a decent adrenaline-inducing session even while watching your favorite television show. Ready? Here we go!

– If a character gets speared, stabbed, or generally killed – do 10 burpee tuck jumps. This exercise is a sure-fire calorie burner that strengthens and tones your lower body, making your kicks and movements more explosive. It also has fantastic cardiovascular benefits.

– If a character says “Your Grace” – do 10 pop push ups. This exercise is great for building upper body strength. In addition, it reinforces your pectoral muscles and arms.

– If you see a dragon or a dragon’s egg – do 10 isolated alternating towel slide lunges. This exercise may seem like a simple movement for the legs and buttocks, but in actuality, it has plenty of benefits. Aside from improving your balance and your core, lunges develop hip flexibility.

– If Tyrion Lannister drinks or has a drink in hand – do 10 chair dips. This movement is perfect since watching TV normally entails sitting on a chair or a couch. When done right, it activates your triceps.

– If ‘Cersei Lannister’ does something bad – do 20 core crunches. Naturally, when it comes to home workouts, we can’t forget about engaging the center of it all, the most important muscle group. By developing your core strength, you improve power, speed, and precision.

Final Fantasy XV: Kingsglaive

Final Fantasy XV: Kingsglaive movie

Final Fantasy has been around since I was a kid. And while I’ve never been big into gaming, I’ve always been peripherally aware of the franchise. I remember seeing a trailer in the late 80’s for one and being enchanted by the other wordly graphics. It was like nothing I’d ever seen before. So when I was offered the chance to screen this film, I took it!

Kingsglaive_Final_Fantasy_XV_main_key_visual.jpg

What struck me about the world of Kingsglaive was how it manages to ground itself both in reality and fantasy. the city of Lucis is littered with halls and throne rooms, with grand costumes and magical foes. But also with highways and an Audi and cartoons on the TV. It felt like a Prius drove through a scene on Game of Thrones. At first it was a jarring transition since I’ve never seen anything like this. But that element of the unexpected helped to give Kingsglaive a completely unique feeling. In a world saturated with dystopian stories, this felt fresh and different. It’s not a dystopian universe, it’s a world all it’s own. If Game of Thrones and Call of Duty had a little CGI baby, it would be this film.

Kingsglaive-FFXV-Featured-Image.jpg
Princess Lunafreya voiced by Lena Headey

Final Fantasy brought in some serious heavy hitters to voice the characters in this film. Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) as Lunafreya, who is NOT Regis’ daughter. Hahaha, laughing at myself here cause, I’m not sure what happened when I was watching, but totally thought she was. Apparently I wasn’t paying very close attention. In my defense, there was a crying baby in the room. For a much more comprehensive synopsis…Google it! 😉 Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) as Nyx, a member of the Kingsglaive who is sent on a mission to protect Lunafreya and ends up going on a journey all his own. And the incomparable Sean Bean (Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings) as King Regis, the King of Lucis who is stuck in the impossible position of making peace and protecting his people.

3106735-kingsglaive-final-fantasy-xv-2-1.jpg
Nyx voiced by Aaron Paul

Here’s the gist, the magical realm of Lucis is under attack, not only from other worldly beasts, but also from forces sent by Niflheim and Tenebrae. In an effort to create a treaty between warring worlds, Lunafreya travels to Lucis to marry Prince Noctis and broker peace. The Kingsglaive are the protectors of the realm and are charged with fulfilling the King’s orders.

King Regis voiced by Sean Bean

I found that as I watched this movie, I really didn’t need to have everything explained or make sense. At times I really didn’t know what was happening. But it was the characters that kept it interesting for me and made me want to keep watching. Especially the character of Libertus, a member of the Kinsglaive and friend to Nyx, who after learning of his friend and fellow Glaive member, Crowe’s death, begins to question the actions of his King and even flirts with traitors.

***SPOLER ALERT*****My favorite part of all was the use of Sean Bean’s voice. It immediately gave me something familiar to latch on to and pull me into the world of Lucis, Niflheim and Tenebrae (even without me really knowing what was going on.) He should be used in all the things, but please stop killing Sean Bean!!!

Take a look at the trailer and give this film a try. It’s a bold and different project and is worth a watch. It’s in theaters now.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Seth Grahame Smith books

If you are a die hard Jane Austen fan, like me, then perhaps you are or were skeptical about the merits of a book that adds blood, gore and the undead into the prim and proper world of Austen’s Regency Era story. Guess what…the resulting work is simply astoundingly fun! A match made in heaven or rather…hell!!

Let me assure you…the movie is no less awesome than the book! I was worried that the film adaptation might skimp on the story and go straight for the gory, but the sweeping romance of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet’s love story was not sacrificed.

The Highlights

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies movie blog

Mr. Darcy

Sam Riley Mr Darcy Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Blog

I was also skeptical about Sam Riley’s, Mr. Darcy. He does not have the countenance that I have come to expect from my Darcy’s. But I have to tell you on the scale from Colin Firth to David Rintoul…I’d place Riley above below Matthew Rhys, but above Elliot Cowan. If only because I’ve never met a Darcy I didn’t like and there are 10, in my estimation, that deserve ranking. Sam Riley definitely gave a solid Darcy performance and upon multiple viewings, I expect him to rise in esteem. The curious thing to me was the timber of his voice. It had a gravelly quality to it that at first I did not care for. But given the dark nature of the zombie apocalypse it started to fit in better than a more refined English accent. All in all, a very charming addition to the Darcy family.

Elizabeth Bennet

Lily James Elizabeth Bennet Pride and Prejudice and Zombies movie blog

As high as my standards are for Mr. Darcy, they are even higher for the second oldest Bennet sister. Perhaps it’s because I identify so closely with her that I hold her in such high and lofty esteem. Lily James has everything that an Elizabeth Bennet should have. A love of longs walks, a ready wit and oh yeah, she kicks serious zombie ass…a quality I never knew I always wanted in Elizabeth Bennet. Her chemistry with Sam Riley is tangible. Especially in the famous proposal scene, where Mr. Darcy makes his love and his reservations about their match known. Let’s just say Elizabeth, a trained warrior, doesn’t take the insult of his proposal lightly and more than just verbal sparring ensues.

Mr. Collins

Matt Smith Mr. Collins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies movie blog

It’s the first time I was ever rooting for Mr. Collins, even if just slightly. The incomparable Matt Smith enters the scene as the silly, ridiculous, irreverent Mr. Collins. But where his predecessors have played the role with nauseating smarm, Smith manages to make Collins seem charming (the only other Collins who achieved a level of charm is Maxwell Glick’s Ricky Collins from the You Tube sensation The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.) It probably helps that I’m incredibly biased towards loving all things Matt Smith, seeing as he is Doctor Who and all! He will always get my vote. I was happy that Charlotte Lucas got to have such a delightful match, though Charlotte herself in this film is quite forgettable.

Lady Catherine de Bourgh

Lena Headey Lady Catherine de Bourgh Pride and Prejudice and Zombies movie blog

I cannot go further without mentioning another powerhouse in the world of geeky fandom. Lena Headey, Cersei Lanister herself, rounds out this cast as Mr. Collin’s benevolent patroness, the Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Except once again, with delightful twists in store for the fan of this classic story. Lady Catherine is no mere aristocrat sitting on her laurels and passing judgement on the Misses Bennet. She is a hardened warrior who has slayed hoards of zombies and even has an eye patch to show for it (a patch used for necessity, not vanity.) When she confronts Elizabeth about whether or not Darcy has made her an offer of marriage, she does more than ask a few tough questions.

The rest of the players are aptly cast, though widely forgettable. Except for the nefarious Mr. George Wickham who is played by the very charming Jack Huston. So charming, in fact, that I was hoping Wickham would end up being as delightful as the man who played him. Alas, Wickham remains a scoundrel in this adaptation as with all the others.

The Walking unDead

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies movie blog

As a fan of all things zombie and all things Jane Austen…my standards on both sides are always very high. I equally expect my romance to be sweeping and my head shots to be brutal. So I am happy to say that I was as satisfied with the portrayal of these beloved characters as I was with the zombie effects. The shots were so resounding that I could feel them in my chest. The zombies were believable…the blood and guts visceral. And the action was fast paced and hard-hitting. It’s as much an action movie as it is a romance. What better way to get boys to appreciate the wonderful world of Austen…just add zombies!

All in all, a really fun movie. I watched the entire thing with a gigantic smile on my face. But, reader… I did not walk away unscathed…

An Imminent Threat

There is an imminent threat facing our culture and indeed the very fabric of our lives. Is it global warming? Nope. Terrorism? Nuh-uh. Uncompromising Bipartisanism? Fuhgeddaboudit!

If Twitter is to be believed, and honestly…why wouldn’t it be, then the most imminent threat facing us today is the “spoiler.” Thousands abandoned social media in the days following the release of Star Wars VII in an effort to avoid being “spoiled.” I myself got vain threats of what would happen if I, who saw the movie on Thursday, were to spoil a single plot point or character arc. When new episodes of television air, people live tweet the show (myself included) causing others to run from all forms media till after watching. A single hashtag can blow up the delicate balance of a viewer’s enjoyment.

WARNING THERE ARE POP CULTURE SPOILERS AHEAD….TREAD CAREFULLY!! (see what I did there!!)

No Spoilers Downton Abbey

I, myself, am a spoiler activist. I fight those who would attempt to spoil for another the crucial moments of a film as momentus as Star Wars!!! I actively delete comments in any thread I have control over that would attempt to do damage to another’s virgin ears. I am a champion of anyone who hasn’t seen a show or a movie yet but has interest in one day watching. I gingerly probe “Did you watch Game of Thrones last night” before blurting out “JON SNOW IS DEAD????” I blog with care, always making sure to warn of impending spoilers so no one is caught unawares. And yes, I do live tweet, but always using a hashtag so that it can easily be muted by anyone not watching the newest episode of Arrow in real time.

But not everyone cares so much about saving people from spoilers as I do. And I ask why? Why would you want to take the joy from another human being? Why would you want to watch the light go out of their eyes when you tell them that Bruce Willis was dead the whole time?? Do you also walk up to small children and tell them that Darth Vader is Luke’s father??

It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world we live in, gentle reader. And I urge you to take a stand against the spoilers of the world. They will not prevail. If you’re interested in doing more to protect the unspoiled and thus bring balance to our very universe, here are some simple steps to take.

Step 1. Check Before You Wreck

Asking a few simple questions around the water cooler, the morning after a big show premier or episode, can help you gauge whether or not people were able to catch it. Try saying “Hey guys, did anyone watch that Sherlock Christmas Episode last night? Or try this “Yo, office friends, where my Whovians at?” (Ok don’t try that one. That one will get you beat up and possibly fired.) But you see where I’m going with this. Checking first will show your friends and colleagues that you care about them. That you don’t want them to be spoiled and further more, that you are indeed a friend to the unspoiled everywhere.

Step 2. Fire a Warning Shot

Bloggers, tweeters, and the social media savvy have a responsibility to give fair warning before blurting out something like “SOYLENT GREEN IS MADE OUT OF PEOPLE.” or “THERE IS NO TYLER DURDEN!!” (Though if you haven’t seen Fight Club by now…shame upon your house.) A simple “Spoiler Alert” will give everyone the chance to abandon ship before reading something they aren’t ready to read. And isn’t that what life is all about in the end? Protecting the innocent. Saving hearts and minds everywhere from exciting and unforseen plot twists?

Step 3. Simply Keep It Shut

No one knows the excitement of discovering those twists and turns that surprising television shows and movies have to offer our minds, like I do. I watch so many shows I can hardly keep up. And I’ve now officially seen Star Wars The Force Awakens in theaters 6 times, so yeah…I like movies too. But when all else fails and people aren’t watching what you’re watching you have two options. You can just go ahead and burn the bridges or you can simply keep your mouth shut. It’s the hardest thing to do when all you want is chat to about your favorite characters, couples, etc. I mean…I came late to the Game of Thrones party so I knew that Ned was gonna lose his head. (rhyming doesn’t make it hurt any less.) But I knew there were even later comers than me. And did I run up and tell them what was to come? No. I let them find out and find their own ways to mourn. That is the right of every human being on this planet. Don’t take that away.!!

Don't Spoil It - Blog Post Nerd in the City

So…what can you do if you want to talk about plot points and spoilers without ruining the lives of your fellow man. I have the answers for you!

1. Facebook Groups are Your Friends

Or rather, Facebook groups can be a place where you can talk openly with your friends. In the wake of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, all I wanted to do was talk about Rey’s suspected parentage, Luke’s appearance and of course, Han’s death. But I also didn’t want to spoil. So a few of my nerdy pals started a group where we have been chatting in private about all turn of events ever since. And it has been wonderful. A safe place. A haven. A place where we could continue to protect those who haven’t seen. Because we care!

2. Real Life Still Exists

I know we live in a virtual world these days. I’m only able to communicate with most of my dearest friends over the phone, chat and social media. But I assure you, the real life sit down still exists. Phone a friend and take them to lunch so you know that you are speaking to someone who won’t be offended by your spoilers. Though it might be courteous to make a general announcement in the restaurant so those sitting around you aren’t in any danger.

3. Journaling Helps

My blog has long been a source of comfort and relief in the wake of a devastating series finale or a movie release like Star Wars. And again, as long as you give fair warning, then all that is said becomes fair game. And others who are in the same boat as you are can feel free to connect. You may even make a new friend. Isn’t that what life is all about? Making new friends because of shared commonality!

We’re all nerds! Everyone on this planet. Don’t let anyone tell you different. So choose to protect your fellow nerd. Go forth and don’t spoil it!!!

Fandoms I’m Thankful For

Thanksgiving is this Thursday. A time to take stock. A time to examine life. A time to count your blessings. A time to be thankful…for FANDOMS!! These are the ones I’m thankful for:

#1: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. I grew up with Star Wars. It’s the first fandom I remember being crazy about. It makes me think of family. It makes me think of powerful female figures. It makes me think Hubba Hubba Han Solo. It’s the ultimate fandom for this nerdy girl!

#2: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. Ever since the announcement that Disney purchased Lucasfilm from George Lucas, I have been counting down the days till the big day. Sure, every Star Wars fan knows that May is the pivotal month for the galaxy far, far away, but I kinda love that we are getting Star Wars for Christmas this year. What can I say, I’m thankful!

#3: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. The Star Wars Universe is a vast and beautiful place. I have been reading books from the expanded universe for many years. So yes, I was initially disappointed that the canon was disbanded. (RIP Mara Jade. You will always be in our hearts!) But I’ve had plenty of time to accept the new Star Wars future. Which now includes brand new expanded universe books. And the beauty is that the old canon books are still highly enjoyable works. Bring on the

#4: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. Star Wars brings people together. Don’t believe me? Attend Star Wars Celebration sometime. Read up on the 501st and the charity works that they are involved in. Read the story of Daniel and the petition to allow him an early viewing of The Force Awakens before his death on. When Star Wars fans gather, great things happen, internets are broken and so are records. If you still doubt the power of the Star Wars fan base, just keep an eye on the box office the weekend of December 18th. You’ll feel the Force then, I can promise you that!

#5: Marvel, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, LOST, Star Trek, Flash/ Arrow, Sherlock, Downton Abbey, Supergirl, Once Upon A Time, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead…
image
Ok…ok! I like a couple other fandoms besides Star Wars and I’m just as grateful for them. When the prospect of Star Wars looms…everything else just pales in comparison. But each of these fandoms (and many more) all have their places in my heart!!

Come countdown to The Force Awakens with me on Instagram. Tag me: @nerdinthesand and use the hashtag: #StarWarsChallenge

44 Reasons Why It Is Good To Be a Nerd

It is so darn good to be a nerd right now. And if you don’t consider yourself a nerd, let me go ahead and give you your very own, personal invitation. It is never too late to join our tribe.
image

We may come off a little strong at first, but we love when people come to the Dark Side (or the Light, if you’re into that sort of thing.) Don’t mistake our passion and zeal for anything other than just that.

Sure…there are trolls. But trust me when I say, we take care of our own! Here are 44 reasons why right now is the time to join us…and together we can rule the fandom!!!
image

Well…you have a lot of homework to do so you better get started now. See you on the other side where I’ll be waiting with your Nerd membership card*. We will engage in an obligatory lightsaber battle and a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock. It’s what we do!

5 Fandom Deaths I’m Still Upset About

Fair warning! This post contains many spoilers because one cannot talk fandom deaths without actually mentioning who it is that died. So if you haven’t watched Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, LOST, The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones than don’t look. Don’t be spoiled. Go watch those shows and come back…see you in a few months or a few years if you aren’t that dedicated to getting through them all.

Thanks to The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick for creating 5 Fandom Friday.

Here goes…

#1 – Amy and Rory from Doctor Who

cd81f94dff70f27e180ef46c0a9832ec

OK, so the fans knew this one was coming. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill were set to leave the show. It was either die or stop time traveling all together and Amy Pond would never have quit her raggedy man if she could help it. So they died. Death by old age, so not a bad way to go. But to be ripped from your own timeline by a Weeping Angel…no thanks. This episode still causes major waterworks every time I watch it. I’ll never get over losing Amy and Rory!!

#2 – Tara from Buffy the Vampire Slayer

8a6fa1ddefc462bd7b15d4482d5c66c4

There are quite a few upsetting deaths on BtVS (I’m looking at you Joyce and Jenny.) Even Buffy herself bit the bullet, not once up twice. But Tara’s death still manages to shock and upset me the most. When you see that blood splatter on Willow’s crisp white peasant blouse…Tara’s blood. Tara who was sweet and innocent and Willow’s lobster. Torn away from the mortal coil by a gun shot to the chest. This one stings because it smacks of reality. In a fantastical world like Buffy, to have died from something so human as a gun shot…well, it just sucks. We live in a world where this is far too common. And Tara’s death still feels completely unjust. Warren deserved the flaying that he got, if you ask me!

#3 – Charlie from LOST

0b6e8cac5dd069b6de6eff2970765a05

DANG! Charlie!! This one stings every time I think about it. You LOST fans know the keen loss. The pain still smarts! I never saw this one coming. I guess I should have. By season 3, people were being picked off like flies. I guess I still thought the core cast (the ones I like most) would be safe. Of course, we’d come to find out that no one is truly safe on LOST and it is Charlie’s death that really taught us that lesson. The words “Not Penny’s Boat” still haunt me. Charlie went out saving lives. The perfect symmetry to how he entered our lives. He began as a selfish, drugged out rock star and truly became a fan favorite (or at least this fan’s favorite!)

#4 – Ned Stark from Game of Thrones

8e202c0f0dbafe4140a418a7f6161c86

I’m a GOT book reader. I’ve read books 1-4 so I knew it was coming, but it still didn’t prepare me for the sadness of losing the Stark patriarch. Ned Stark was a man of justice and integrity. He kept the monarch in line and his own family. Tough job, especially when you have Lannisters against you. He was domed from the beginning because on Game of Thrones, the just and the moral get punished.

To be fair, there are more shocking and more horrifying deaths on Game of Thrones (see: Rob Stark, Catelyn Stark, Jon Snow, Ygritte, Khal Drogo, Oberyn Martell, etc.) but it’s Ned’s death that sets the tone for the series in season 1. It’s Ned’s death that sets the Lannisters up for their reign of power and ultimate downfall. And it’s Ned Stark who could have stopped the evil from spreading through Westeros. We miss you, Ned! #5 – Hershel from The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead is another show where death is rampant and usual. It’s rarely surprising anymore (except if Darryl were to die… that would be shocking and surprising and completely upsetting…Don’t do that, AMC!) But I admit, Hershel’s death got me. I literally screamed when it happened. (That’s what happens when you watch TWD alone in your apartment with all the lights off.) Hershel was another example of someone who kept the balance. Being a good guy is a really tough business on TV. No one cared when Angela died or stupid Dale. It’s the good ones that truly rip the heart out. And Hershel’s death was my least favorite one (though Beth’s came pretty close.)

Honorable Mention – Tasha Yar from Star Trek: The Next Generation

I want to give a shout out to one of the earliest fandom, TV deaths, Tasha Yar. Star Trek killed off Tasha way before it was cool to kill off characters. And no one saw that one coming because the internet wasn’t what it is today… or even a thing at all. So there were no rumors surrounding her upcoming death. Or fan theories about. She was an upstanding crew member who went on an away mission to a planet with a tar monster. She was taken by the tar monster…goodbye Tasha Yar.

If this post has left you feeling a little depressed and nostalgic for characters long gone, then definitely don’t go back and watch the happy times before they died. I tried that with season 1 of Game of Thrones…trust me, it only made things worse.
