Hamilton Broadway Musical Follow Friday
Photo from ticketmaster.com

I have to tell you that I’m a more than a little obsessed with Hamilton the Broadway Musical. It’s all I can listen to right now. I know, I know. I’m late to the bandwagon. The world nation world is obsessed with it. I don’t know if you know this about me, but along with my myriad other nerdy pursuits, I am also a history nerd (thanks to my dad.) So before I talk about anything else, I want to encourage you to get obsessed with this musical first and foremost, because it deserves your ears and your adoration and your love. Head to Spotify and check it out or just go on ahead and buy it on iTunes… you will not regret it. And while you’re at it, go follow Lin Manuel-Miranda, who wrote it (and also wrote In the Heights) and is a creative mind that you should be following (more on him in a later edition of Follow Friday, because he deserves his own shoutout!) Be inspired by how Lin sees the history of this nation!! It’s completely beautiful!

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries on You Tube

I know I talk about this one all the time, so I’m hoping the chances are high that everyone who reads my blog has already gone ahead and watched the LBD, rendering this suggestion completely unnecessary! But on the off chance that there is someone reading this that hasn’t seen the Lizzie Bennet Diaries yet, then here we go. This modern You Tube adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is lovely, wonderful and all the best of adjectives I can possibly conjure up!! If you are a fan of Jane Austen’s work, this is for you. If you are a fan of compelling story telling, this is for you. If you are a fan of creativity and ingenuity, this is for you. If you have eyes…THIS IS FOR YOU!! Get me?

This man puts objects in his beard to test the strength and fortitude of his facial hair. It’s as simple as that! Pierce Thiot discovered this unique talent one night with his family. “Over Christmas break, my mom had her grandkids do a talent show for her (she’s an adorable grandma). I tried to put as many pencils as possible in it for my “talent”. I got over 20. Needless to say, my mother was very proud.” If you are still trying to navigate life and figure out what your talent might be, chose to take inspiration from Pierce! You never know where your talent lies. It could be in your very beard!

He was also in School of Thrones and Muzzled the Musical (both of which deserve your viewership as well.)

But it’s his You Tube channel that I want to draw your attention to. In this age of digital trolling and Trump on TV, it’s fair to say that we could all use a little positivity in our lives. He LOVES Disney and his channel has is a veritable treasure trove of fun including, but not limited to: original parody songs (my personal favorites,) Disney tours, reaction vidscommentary and a whole lot more.

The point I’m trying to make is that you should give Maxwell a try!!

Meet Theo and Beau. A pair of best friends who love to take the most adorable naps together. Luckily mom, Jessica Shyba had the good sense to document the adorable that took place and put the resulting pictures up on Instagram, where these pictures feel right at home.

Beau was just a toddler when he found his new best friend in puppy, Theo. Both were tiny tykes when Jessica started out. They have both grown, but don’t worry the cute still continues in this family’s newest endeavor “Naptime with Theo and Beau.” A children’s book that is now available everywhere books are sold. And “Bathtime with Theo and Beau,” their follow-up book,  just landed in stores on January 19th, 2016.

But that isn’t all, in 2014 the family welcomed home Evvie, their newest edition. And guess what she loves to do…take naps with adorable animals like Theo and the family’s cat. Don’t miss a single moment of the adorable that this family has to offer with the popular hashtags: #TheoandBeau and #TheoandEvvie and of course @mommasgonecity herself!!

Marty, Michael, Brandon and Jared are four nerdy dudes who decided to start a podcast together. Each Tuesday on their weekly podcast, they break down what’s new, exciting, infuriating, etc. in pop culture. It could be a new trailer that dropped, a TV show pilot, a game launch…if it’s nerdy and they have a reaction, they’ll be discussing it on the podcast.

They occasionally have guest reactors including your truly! But don’t take my word for it. Check them out every week and make sure to weigh in on any reactions you may have or burning questions you want answered on their Twitter page.

Calling anyone who loves to read and believes in equality. Emma Watson has been working with UN Women and in an effort learn more about equality and to prepare for her role as feminist icon and all around lovely human being, Emma has started her own Book Club on Goodreads. The group is called “Our Shared Shelf” and the first book we’re reading is “My Life on the Road” by Gloria Steinem. The perfect choice for this group.

In a world where more and more people are escaping direct interaction with the online community due to the huge insurgence of internet trolls and hate mongering, Emma Watson takes a bold step towards greater connectivity with her fans and creating a conversation about equality that is positive and productive to the narrative of our culture. She has a big dream for the women of this world and she’s not afraid to share it!! So get onboard the Hogwarts Express…ok, I had to make a Potter reference somewhere!! Moral of the story is, join in!

An Imminent Threat

There is an imminent threat facing our culture and indeed the very fabric of our lives. Is it global warming? Nope. Terrorism? Nuh-uh. Uncompromising Bipartisanism? Fuhgeddaboudit!

If Twitter is to be believed, and honestly…why wouldn’t it be, then the most imminent threat facing us today is the “spoiler.” Thousands abandoned social media in the days following the release of Star Wars VII in an effort to avoid being “spoiled.” I myself got vain threats of what would happen if I, who saw the movie on Thursday, were to spoil a single plot point or character arc. When new episodes of television air, people live tweet the show (myself included) causing others to run from all forms media till after watching. A single hashtag can blow up the delicate balance of a viewer’s enjoyment.

WARNING THERE ARE POP CULTURE SPOILERS AHEAD….TREAD CAREFULLY!! (see what I did there!!)

No Spoilers Downton Abbey

I, myself, am a spoiler activist. I fight those who would attempt to spoil for another the crucial moments of a film as momentus as Star Wars!!! I actively delete comments in any thread I have control over that would attempt to do damage to another’s virgin ears. I am a champion of anyone who hasn’t seen a show or a movie yet but has interest in one day watching. I gingerly probe “Did you watch Game of Thrones last night” before blurting out “JON SNOW IS DEAD????” I blog with care, always making sure to warn of impending spoilers so no one is caught unawares. And yes, I do live tweet, but always using a hashtag so that it can easily be muted by anyone not watching the newest episode of Arrow in real time.

But not everyone cares so much about saving people from spoilers as I do. And I ask why? Why would you want to take the joy from another human being? Why would you want to watch the light go out of their eyes when you tell them that Bruce Willis was dead the whole time?? Do you also walk up to small children and tell them that Darth Vader is Luke’s father??

It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world we live in, gentle reader. And I urge you to take a stand against the spoilers of the world. They will not prevail. If you’re interested in doing more to protect the unspoiled and thus bring balance to our very universe, here are some simple steps to take.

Step 1. Check Before You Wreck

Asking a few simple questions around the water cooler, the morning after a big show premier or episode, can help you gauge whether or not people were able to catch it. Try saying “Hey guys, did anyone watch that Sherlock Christmas Episode last night? Or try this “Yo, office friends, where my Whovians at?” (Ok don’t try that one. That one will get you beat up and possibly fired.) But you see where I’m going with this. Checking first will show your friends and colleagues that you care about them. That you don’t want them to be spoiled and further more, that you are indeed a friend to the unspoiled everywhere.

Step 2. Fire a Warning Shot

Bloggers, tweeters, and the social media savvy have a responsibility to give fair warning before blurting out something like “SOYLENT GREEN IS MADE OUT OF PEOPLE.” or “THERE IS NO TYLER DURDEN!!” (Though if you haven’t seen Fight Club by now…shame upon your house.) A simple “Spoiler Alert” will give everyone the chance to abandon ship before reading something they aren’t ready to read. And isn’t that what life is all about in the end? Protecting the innocent. Saving hearts and minds everywhere from exciting and unforseen plot twists?

Step 3. Simply Keep It Shut

No one knows the excitement of discovering those twists and turns that surprising television shows and movies have to offer our minds, like I do. I watch so many shows I can hardly keep up. And I’ve now officially seen Star Wars The Force Awakens in theaters 6 times, so yeah…I like movies too. But when all else fails and people aren’t watching what you’re watching you have two options. You can just go ahead and burn the bridges or you can simply keep your mouth shut. It’s the hardest thing to do when all you want is chat to about your favorite characters, couples, etc. I mean…I came late to the Game of Thrones party so I knew that Ned was gonna lose his head. (rhyming doesn’t make it hurt any less.) But I knew there were even later comers than me. And did I run up and tell them what was to come? No. I let them find out and find their own ways to mourn. That is the right of every human being on this planet. Don’t take that away.!!

Don't Spoil It - Blog Post Nerd in the City

So…what can you do if you want to talk about plot points and spoilers without ruining the lives of your fellow man. I have the answers for you!

1. Facebook Groups are Your Friends

Or rather, Facebook groups can be a place where you can talk openly with your friends. In the wake of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, all I wanted to do was talk about Rey’s suspected parentage, Luke’s appearance and of course, Han’s death. But I also didn’t want to spoil. So a few of my nerdy pals started a group where we have been chatting in private about all turn of events ever since. And it has been wonderful. A safe place. A haven. A place where we could continue to protect those who haven’t seen. Because we care!

2. Real Life Still Exists

I know we live in a virtual world these days. I’m only able to communicate with most of my dearest friends over the phone, chat and social media. But I assure you, the real life sit down still exists. Phone a friend and take them to lunch so you know that you are speaking to someone who won’t be offended by your spoilers. Though it might be courteous to make a general announcement in the restaurant so those sitting around you aren’t in any danger.

3. Journaling Helps

My blog has long been a source of comfort and relief in the wake of a devastating series finale or a movie release like Star Wars. And again, as long as you give fair warning, then all that is said becomes fair game. And others who are in the same boat as you are can feel free to connect. You may even make a new friend. Isn’t that what life is all about? Making new friends because of shared commonality!

We’re all nerds! Everyone on this planet. Don’t let anyone tell you different. So choose to protect your fellow nerd. Go forth and don’t spoil it!!!

We Have a Troll Problem

When I was growing up, whenever I heard the word ‘troll,’ it was usually in the context of a fairy story or a song. Perhaps with the chorus, “Fall Dee Roll” or “Fee Fi Fo Fum.” Trolls were mythical, menacing creatures often vital to the hero’s story arc.
image
* Illustration by Jim Madsen

Sure, the colorful haired, jewel bellied toys from the 80’s come to mind too, but that’s a different story!
image

Trolls are a very real menace, and they are no longer mythical. They are lurking behind computer screens just waiting to send a nasty comment, tweet, post, etc. Trolls aren’t green and hairy and living under bridges. They are everyday people. People who think it’s ok to spread any hateful thought that pops into their head.
image
*Photo from PCmag.com

I love social media. I love tweeting and snapping and gramming and vining and periscoping and blogging and pinning and tubing…you get the picture. I love all of it. And I think the Internet is a powerful force for good. I just don’t think everyone uses it that way.

There’s a dark side…and not the fun one. There’s a cold, impersonal side where people attack instead of understand. Where one tweet can cause a maelstrom of hatred. Where people are no longer held accountable for the heinous things that are said.
You don’t have to look another person in the face if you just comment. You don’t have to see the hurt when you write “you should shut your mouth…you deserve to be raped…I hope you die.”

I guess I’m wondering how we stop the trolls? It’s not like we, the villagers, can take up our torches and go troll killing.
When trolls can get a hashtag like #BoycottStarWars trending…i sorta think the trolls are winning. And you know why they are boycotting? Because a black man and a woman are leads in the film. I wonder what century they are living in. I wonder what their mother’s would say. But most of all I wonder where to direct my proverbial torch.
image
*Photo from The Fans Been Hit

I can’t see the face of the person who on Twitter called me a phony and a fake and told me I didn’t deserve to speak.
I can’t see the face of the person on Instagram who wrote “you should be slapped in the face.”

I wish this was a post that had all the answers. I wish I knew what to do when the trolls come out. But I either snap back or cower in fear and I know neither is the correct response.

The best response to trolling goes to Alanah Pearce who did not sit back quietly and allow her abusers to win. She sent the hateful comments they made straight to their mothers. Read the full story HERE.

That may work for abusive teenagers, but how we do stop the grown adults who think this behavior is worse than ok…they think it’s normal. If you think of the answer to these questions let me know.
I prefer my trolls to be large, hairy beasts stuck in the pages of a fairytale or in Harry Potter. But I guess the 21st century had a different plan for us. Villagers, we gotta stick together!
