Follow Friday Blog from Nerd in the City

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow Friday. A place where I share the cool things that I’ve discovered on social media and such. I love them and I want you to love them too. So I hope you enjoy today’s list!!

Hamilton the Musical

I have to tell you that I’m a more than a little obsessed with Hamilton the Broadway Musical. It’s all I can listen to right now. I know, I know. I’m late to the bandwagon. The world nation world is obsessed with it. I don’t know if you know this about me, but along with my myriad other nerdy pursuits, I am also a history nerd (thanks to my dad.) So before I talk about anything else, I want to encourage you to get obsessed with this musical first and foremost, because it deserves your ears and your adoration and your love. Head to Spotify and check it out or just go on ahead and buy it on iTunes… you will not regret it. And while you’re at it, go follow Lin Manuel-Miranda, who wrote it (and also wrote In the Heights) and is a creative mind that you should be following (more on him in a later edition of Follow Friday, because he deserves his own shoutout!) Be inspired by how Lin sees the history of this nation!! It’s completely beautiful!

I don’t know how to explain exactly what Zach does on his Instagram and Vine channels. The best way I can tell you is to say that he creates insane movie magic and you will be left wondering how the hell he does what he does! Please go check him out right now.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries on You Tube

I know I talk about this one all the time, so I’m hoping the chances are high that everyone who reads my blog has already gone ahead and watched the LBD, rendering this suggestion completely unnecessary! But on the off chance that there is someone reading this that hasn’t seen the Lizzie Bennet Diaries yet, then here we go. This modern You Tube adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is lovely, wonderful and all the best of adjectives I can possibly conjure up!! If you are a fan of Jane Austen’s work, this is for you. If you are a fan of compelling story telling, this is for you. If you are a fan of creativity and ingenuity, this is for you. If you have eyes…THIS IS FOR YOU!! Get me?

This man puts objects in his beard to test the strength and fortitude of his facial hair. It’s as simple as that! Pierce Thiot discovered this unique talent one night with his family. “Over Christmas break, my mom had her grandkids do a talent show for her (she’s an adorable grandma). I tried to put as many pencils as possible in it for my “talent”. I got over 20. Needless to say, my mother was very proud.” If you are still trying to navigate life and figure out what your talent might be, chose to take inspiration from Pierce! You never know where your talent lies. It could be in your very beard!

#NerdySlumberParty

-POP

This Friday night, Nerd in the City is having it’s next #NerdySlumberParty If you’ve never been to a Twitter party before, here’s how it works. The party will kick off at 9pm on…you guessed it…Twitter. You can join the discussion or just follow along with the hashtag #NerdySlumberParty Since it’s a virtual party, you can join in no matter where you live. You can even wear your PJ’s and no one will be the wiser (I always do!)

There will be giveaways and we’ll be talking about all things DC Comics. That means we could be chatting about the recent seasons of Arrow, The Flash and Gotham. We could talk about the upcoming Supergirl show on CBS. Or the myriad of movies soon to hit our big screens, including but not limited to: Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad and The Justice League. We could also discuss the various comics out there like the New 52.

All nerds are welcome, so invite a friend!! You do not want to miss it.

Stay nerdy!!

Color Me Confused

First up is Smiley. I met Smiley at our favorite karaoke haunt, Gabby O’Hara’s one Tuesday night. He wore a suit, bought me a drink and played a mean bongo drum. We started talking and eventually exchanged numbers. A story as old as time. Or as old as bars.

He even came out with me and all my friends that very Friday night. He was so nice and really took the time to talk to them and made himself the pseudo protector of our merry little band. Excited at the prospect of a new flirt, I went home thinking ‘He’s a good one.’ And all my friends went home thinking, ‘The girl finally found someone to date.’

WRONG!!!

I’m gonna go ahead and bullet point this portion cause it gets weird:

– I invite him to church

– He accepts and comes that Sunday

– We exit church together

– No dinner invitation is extended

– Instead he says “I’m gonna go grab a drink and head back to work”

– I scratch my head in confusion and go home to eat alone

–  While on the train (not 20 mins later) I receive a text that says “What are you doing?”

– My inner monologue: “What do you think I’m doing, dumb ass? I’m going home to eat alone because you couldn’t muster the balls to ask me out in person”

– Actual reply: “Going home to wash dishes and eat dinner”

– Smiley: “I love washing dishes, I’ll come over”

– My inner monologue: “Oh you will, will you? We just met less that a week ago, home slice. So… no, I don’t think you will be coming over to ‘wash my dishes!'”

– Actual reply: “I live far away and have no air conditioning so it’s really hot here. Rain check?”

– Smiley: “I don’t care how far away you live and I can fan myself with the clothes I take off. Hahaha. LOL.”

-Inner monologue and actual reply collide into: “Huh? @%&((!**??????”

AND SCENE!!

I told him he should’ve asked me out when he was standing not 2 feet from me and that maybe I’d see him at karaoke sometime.    He hasn’t been to karaoke since and I promptly deleted his phone number. Color Me Confused!!!
