#NerdsLove

February is the month of love. Which often illicits a “Yuck” and an eye roll from me. Instead of my usual “down with love” attitude, I decided instead to share the things I love with my instapeeps. And the best part is that a bunch of you joined my challenge and shared the things you loved with me! Check out the hashtag #NerdsLove for more from everyone and each individual hashtag below for more specific expressions of love.

Love Letters to…

I love Pinterest graphic by Nerd in the City blog post

Reader, by now you should know many things about me. You should know that I love Star Wars above all other earthly things. You should know that I am a nerd of the highest order, that I love Jane Austen and things of a more romantical nature. You should know that I love history and art and music and writing and dancing and friends and family.

I love Pinterest graphic by Nerd in the City blog post

And while I’ve written on the subject before, I want to take special care to reiterate my deep, abiding love for…Pinterest. If you have not gotten that impression from me before, allow me to correct that oversight and share my love with you in the most animated language of the literary greats. Most of these should work to prove my point, but let’s see shall we? I might have to make a few adjustments here and there, but the majority of the original text will stand. Here goes…

Pinterest,

“In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My pins will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

(-Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen…for the most part)

Pinterest,

Now, I’m not going to deny that I was aware of your beauty. But the point is, this has nothing to do with your beauty. As I got to know you, I began to realize that beauty was the least of your qualities. I became fascinated by your goodness. I was drawn in by it. I didn’t understand what was happening to me. And it was only when I began to feel actual, physical pain every time I turned off my computer that it finally dawned on me: I was in love, for the first time in my life. I knew it was hopeless, but that didn’t matter to me. “

(-Dangerous Liaisons by Choderlos de Laclos…primarily)

Pinterest,

“I wish I knew how to quit you.”

(-Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx)

Pinterest,

“I am nothing special; just a common girl with common pins, and I’ve led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten. But in one respect I have succeeded as gloriously as anyone who’s ever lived: I’ve loved you with all my pins and boards; and to me, this has always been enough.”

(-The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks…almost entirely)

Pinterest,

“I have waited for this opportunity for more than half a century (or at least the past 6 years since your online birth,) to repeat to you once again my vow of eternal fidelity and everlasting pinning.”

(-Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Marquez…chiefly)

Pinterest,

“Whatever our pins are made of, yours and mine are the same.”

(-Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë…predominantly)

Pinterest,

“You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago (by not yet existing.) Dare not say that woman forgets sooner than social media platform, that her love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you.”

(-Persuasion by Jane Austen…largely)

Dear Pinterest love note Alfred Lord Tennyson blog post

Pinterest,

‘Tis better to have pinned and lost, Than never to have pinned at all.”

(-Selected poems by Lord Alfred Tennyson…in part)

Pinterest,

“It has made me better loving you … it has made me wiser, and easier, and brighter. I used to want a great many pins before, and to be angry that I did not have them. Theoretically, I was satisfied. I flattered myself that I had limited my pins. But I was subject to irritation; I used to have morbid sterile hateful fits of hunger, of desire. Now I really am satisfied, because I can’t think of anything better (than to pin all those things onto boards and look at them later.)”

(-The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James…essentially)

Pinterest,

It is better to pin wisely, no doubt: but to pin foolishly is better than not to be able to pin at all.”

(-Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray…on the whole)

Pinterest,

“You are my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest.”

(Poems by W.H. Auden…with minor adjustments)

Pinterest,

“Doubt thou the stars are fire; Doubt that the sun doth move; Doubt truth to be a liar; But never doubt I pin.”

(-Hamlet by William Shakespeare…mostly)

Geez, I hope people know I’m mostly joking… but seriously Pinterest is good! If you aren’t following me on Pinterest then come to the Nexus of my brain and enjoy all 390 boards for your viewing and pinning pleasure!

Follow Friday Blog from Nerd in the City

Welcome to this week’s edition of Follow Friday. A place where I share the cool things that I’ve discovered on social media and such. I love them and I want you to love them too. So I hope you enjoy today’s list!!

Hamilton the Musical

Hamilton Broadway Musical Follow Friday
Photo from ticketmaster.com

I have to tell you that I’m a more than a little obsessed with Hamilton the Broadway Musical. It’s all I can listen to right now. I know, I know. I’m late to the bandwagon. The world nation world is obsessed with it. I don’t know if you know this about me, but along with my myriad other nerdy pursuits, I am also a history nerd (thanks to my dad.) So before I talk about anything else, I want to encourage you to get obsessed with this musical first and foremost, because it deserves your ears and your adoration and your love. Head to Spotify and check it out or just go on ahead and buy it on iTunes… you will not regret it. And while you’re at it, go follow Lin Manuel-Miranda, who wrote it (and also wrote In the Heights) and is a creative mind that you should be following (more on him in a later edition of Follow Friday, because he deserves his own shoutout!) Be inspired by how Lin sees the history of this nation!! It’s completely beautiful!

Zach King on Vine and on Instagram

Zach King on Vine Follow Friday

I don’t know how to explain exactly what Zach does on his Instagram and Vine channels. The best way I can tell you is to say that he creates insane movie magic and you will be left wondering how the hell he does what he does! Please go check him out right now.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries on You Tube

I know I talk about this one all the time, so I’m hoping the chances are high that everyone who reads my blog has already gone ahead and watched the LBD, rendering this suggestion completely unnecessary! But on the off chance that there is someone reading this that hasn’t seen the Lizzie Bennet Diaries yet, then here we go. This modern You Tube adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is lovely, wonderful and all the best of adjectives I can possibly conjure up!! If you are a fan of Jane Austen’s work, this is for you. If you are a fan of compelling story telling, this is for you. If you are a fan of creativity and ingenuity, this is for you. If you have eyes…THIS IS FOR YOU!! Get me?

Will It Beard on Instagram

Will it Beard on Instagram Follow Friday

This man puts objects in his beard to test the strength and fortitude of his facial hair. It’s as simple as that! Pierce Thiot discovered this unique talent one night with his family. “Over Christmas break, my mom had her grandkids do a talent show for her (she’s an adorable grandma). I tried to put as many pencils as possible in it for my “talent”. I got over 20. Needless to say, my mother was very proud.” If you are still trying to navigate life and figure out what your talent might be, chose to take inspiration from Pierce! You never know where your talent lies. It could be in your very beard!

Do you love Star Wars? Did you see The Force Awakens and wonder to yourself “Hmmm…I wonder what kind of things that moody, little twerp Kylo Ren would tweet if they had such things as Twitter in that galaxy far, far away?” Well, wonder no more. Maxwell Glick on YouTube

Allow me to introduce you to the wonderful world of Maxwell Glick aka Mr. Cheezy Pop. Maxwell is best known on the inter webs for his charming portrayal of Ricky Collins in The Lizzie Bennet Diaries web series (which again, if you haven’t seen…you must see immediately.) He was also in School of Thrones and Muzzled the Musical (both of which deserve your viewership as well.)

But it’s his You Tube channel that I want to draw your attention to. In this age of digital trolling and Trump on TV, it’s fair to say that we could all use a little positivity in our lives. And that’s exactly what Maxwell has to offer. He LOVES Disney and his channel has is a veritable treasure trove of fun including, but not limited to: original parody songs (my personal favorites,) Disney tours, reaction vidscommentary and a whole lot more.

The point I’m trying to make is that you should give Maxwell a try!!

Meet Theo and Beau. A pair of best friends who love to take the most adorable naps together. Luckily mom, Jessica Shyba had the good sense to document the adorable that took place and put the resulting pictures up on Instagram, where these pictures feel right at home.

Beau was just a toddler when he found his new best friend in puppy, Theo. Both were tiny tykes when Jessica started out. They have both grown, but don’t worry the cute still continues in this family’s newest endeavor “Naptime with Theo and Beau.” A children’s book that is now available everywhere books are sold. And “Bathtime with Theo and Beau,” their follow-up book,  just landed in stores on January 19th, 2016.

But that isn’t all, in 2014 the family welcomed home Evvie, their newest edition. And guess what she loves to do…take naps with adorable animals like Theo and the family’s cat. Don’t miss a single moment of the adorable that this family has to offer with the popular hashtags: #TheoandBeau and #TheoandEvvie and of course @mommasgonecity herself!!

Marty, Michael, Brandon and Jared are four nerdy dudes who decided to start a podcast together. Each Tuesday on their weekly podcast, they break down what’s new, exciting, infuriating, etc. in pop culture. It could be a new trailer that dropped, a TV show pilot, a game launch…if it’s nerdy and they have a reaction, they’ll be discussing it on the podcast.

They occasionally have guest reactors including your truly! But don’t take my word for it. Check them out every week and make sure to weigh in on any reactions you may have or burning questions you want answered on their Twitter page.

Calling anyone who loves to read and believes in equality. Emma Watson has been working with UN Women and in an effort learn more about equality and to prepare for her role as feminist icon and all around lovely human being, Emma has started her own Book Club on Goodreads. The group is called “Our Shared Shelf” and the first book we’re reading is “My Life on the Road” by Gloria Steinem. The perfect choice for this group.

In a world where more and more people are escaping direct interaction with the online community due to the huge insurgence of internet trolls and hate mongering, Emma Watson takes a bold step towards greater connectivity with her fans and creating a conversation about equality that is positive and productive to the narrative of our culture. She has a big dream for the women of this world and she’s not afraid to share it!! So get onboard the Hogwarts Express…ok, I had to make a Potter reference somewhere!! Moral of the story is, join in!

I don’t know if you feel this way. But sometimes I feel like there’s so much noise out there on social media these days. It seems like everyone is trying to be heard. Me included. But you, gentle reader, have included my voice in the playlist of your life. And for that I’m grateful. I’m excited to share with you some other voices that you maybe haven’t heard yet. People on Vine and Twitter and Instagram and Pinterest and You Tube and who are Podcasting and Blogging that are making noise of a different kind.

The New Adventures of Peter and Wendy on You Tube

If you enjoyed The Lizzie Bennet Diaries or Emma Approved (2 of my very favorites in the world of web series) and are a fan of the classic tale of Peter Pan, then this crowd funded web series on You Tube is perfect for your eyeballs! Created by Kyle Walters (who also plays the role of Peter Pan) and Shawn deLoche. This series is fun, well-written and perfectly cast.

Season 1 saw the shenanigans of Peter Pan, Wendy Darling, John Darling, Michael Darling, Lily Bagha and Tinkerbell. Season 2 upped the ante with the addition of Billie Jukes, Mr. Darling, Mr. Smee and Jas Hook. Fans of the series eagerly await season 3.

It’s a fresh, new take on the beloved story by J.M. Barrie!

Fashion by Mayhem on Instagram

Little Mayhem started crafting dresses out of paper when she was just 4 years old. Her career as a miniature fashion maven has taken off since her mom, Angie, started posting pictures of her creations on Instagram.

Late in 2014 Mayhem’s creations started to catch the attention of big names like Ellen, Vogue and J. Crew who offered Mayhem her own shot at a fashion line for kids under the label Fashion by Mayhem.

The creativity and well branded voice of the Pinterest board began to take off, and then was turned into a book, “How to Quinoa: Life Lessons from My Imaginary Well-Dressed Daughter.” Available today.

30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 16

Day 16: Padme Amidala from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

I was going to save this one for Thursday, the 18th, which will mark that we only have 6 months till Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens opens in theaters. But today I woke up with great Padme hair texture, so I had to bump it up a couple days. Padme Amidala starts off in Episode 1 as the queen of Naboo. Her hair is very strategic and massive. It’s part of her costume and her persona as queen. It’s meant to intimidate. By Episode III she has softened her hairstyles, rocking curls and waves. The hair becomes far less intimidating and much more feminine. Representing a change, not only in her political status (she is no longer queen of Naboo in Ep. III) but also in her personal life. She is married and pregnant, about to give birth to her and Anakin’s child. This is a much different Padme and her hair is a reflection of that. Hair can tell you a lot of things about a person!!

image

I used a clip in place of her headpiece and just let the curls cascade down. I also added a coral lip gloss like she’s wearing in the above picture. Now all I need is a flowy, Naboo nightgown and a very angry, confused Jedi husband and my journey to Padme cosplay will be complete.

Is anyone else so freaking ready for The Force Awakens??? Is it December yet???

5 Fandom Friday

Smart Phone Apps I Couldn’t Live Without

Today’s topic proposed by The Nerdie Girlie and Super Space Chick are 5 apps that you couldn’t live without. I’m altering a little reflect some of my favorite ones that I don’t want to live without as well as some I reluctantly can’t live without! Personally I miss not being as reliant on my phone. But it is what it is and at this point it’s a little hard to turn back. So there are the ones I love and rely on in my day to day life.

#1: Pinterest

unnamed
I loooove Pinterest. If you follow me, you’ll know just how much I love it!! (Spoiler alert: I love it a lot) And the Pinterest phone app let’s me pin stuff from anywhere at anytime and I just love that!! If you watch the BBC’s Sherlock, then you’d know what a mind palace is. And I like to think of Pinterest as my own personal mind palace. When I was in college studying fashion design, we used to make inspiration boards all the time. And I used to have boxes of magazine clippings for those boards. So I feel like I’ve been pinning things since long before Pinterest came around. And finally technology and my brain are in perfect sync. Pinterest is where I think, it’s where I dream, it’s where the magic happens!!

#2: Instagram

Instagram-icon
I really like that we are living in an age of self documentation. I have such a terrible memory. There are so many holes in my memories of growing up. And it’s cool to know that I’ll be able to look back through Instagram at the moments I felt were worthy of documentation (like Thursday’s lunch and my feet in the sand.)
And personally my face looks much better with a nice Amaro or X-Pro II filter over it. Making those moments not only memorable, but really pretty too.
I only wish that Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and other classic movie stars were still alive because I imagine their Insta feeds would be legendary!!

#3: Spotify

App-Spotify-icon
Music really is the food of life. It can instantly change your mood or reflect it. It can be uplifting. It can tell a story. It can bring people together. And Spotify allows you access to most of your favorite artists (minus Tay Swift, of course.) For a modest subscription fee you have the ability to make playlists and listen to your favorite tunes.

#4: My Fitness Pal

images

Listen… fitness is important. I genuinely enjoy working out. But as the winter approaches, so does a season of eating warm comfort foods like the ones on last week’s 5 Fandom Friday list – Click Here. As well as holiday treats like Granny’s apple pie and Uncle Lint’s garlic mashed potatoes. So I tend to need a little extra help with my fitness around this time. Enter My Fitness Pal. It’s an excellent app that tracks your food intake, nutrition stats and exercise. It gives you tips on whether or not you’re getting enough fiber or too much sugar and it projects your progress each day. It definitely helps keep me from gaining 3,000 pounds during the holidays!

#5: Google Maps

XtpTm

This one is a reluctant choice. It’s not so much a favorite app as much as it’s an app I genuinely believe I couldn’t live without. And I actually love physical real-life maps. But a couple times a week I find myself wishing for a simpler time. I wonder how we all functioned before technology started to rule our lives. I honestly don’t know anymore. Sadly we now live in a time of reliance instead of resilience. I used to much more self reliant. Like I could figure anything out. And these days without technology I tend to feel a little lost. Like I’m not sure I can find my way without my Google Map. Hopefully when the zombie apocalypse hits, we’ll find out we’re all stronger than we think we are! In a zombie apocalypse there is no time for reliance.

The Pinterest Wormhole

Have you ever got caught in the inevitable Pinterest wormhole? You know what I’m talking about. One little picture of Tom Hiddleston’s face and you are knee deep in pinning every expression he’s ever made. Which leads you to that one photo of him and Benedict Cumberbatch together. Which is just about the most perfect man sandwich ever invented in life.

Two of my most favorite people ever(: Tom Hiddleston and Bennie Cumberbatch....

Of course, once you are in the land of Cumberbatch you end up with a brand new board called “I am Sherlocked” because one pin of that handsome face is not enough. And then you’ve brought Martin Freeman into the mix. Which brings you around to The Hobbit. Soon you have a board called “Over the Misty Mountain” which brings in Dominic Monaghan (and leads to a board called “The Hatch“), Richard Armitage (and a board aptly titled “Sherwood Forest“), and Ian McKellan which reminds you of how much you love wizards!! And once wizards enter the mix, you can’t go on in life without creating a board called “The Boy Who Lived.”

That is a ticking time bomb of new boards about to explode on the Pinterest-sphere. Then you’re just pinning left and right (3 hours have now gone by and you’ve forgotten to eat.) Once you’ve pinned Potter you say to yourself, “There are so many other fandoms I love that are not yet represented.”

Then comes more boards with titles like “1.21 Gigawatts,” “007,” “Glitch in the Matrix,” “We Named the Dog Indiana,” “Timey-Wimey,” “Walkers,” “Stormborn,” “Shiny,” “Welcome to the Hellmouth.” And so on. Being the gigantic nerd you are, you need a “Star Trek” and a “Star Wars” board. Fandom is not complete without these two… duh!!

All of sudden you think to  yourself (cause there is no human in sight amid all this pinning) “What about superheroes? They aren’t represented yet either. That’s not even fair of me.” So you come up with boards like “DC vs. Marvel (everyone wins)” and “The Evil League of Evil.” And soon you find that perfect picture of Loki smiling with that devilishly handsome face of his and somehow you’ve ended up right back to pinning the many grins of Tom Hiddleston.

Just gradually more mischievous. And there's still people who don't get this fandom. bwaahaha

The circle is now complete. And an entire day has wasted away… but if we’re being honest with ourselves… do we really think wasted is the proper word? Nope!

Tomorrow let’s start with a young Harrison Ford and see where that takes us!! The possibilities are endless.
