Fandoms I’m Thankful For

Thanksgiving is this Thursday. A time to take stock. A time to examine life. A time to count your blessings. A time to be thankful…for FANDOMS!! These are the ones I’m thankful for:

#1: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. I grew up with Star Wars. It’s the first fandom I remember being crazy about. It makes me think of family. It makes me think of powerful female figures. It makes me think Hubba Hubba Han Solo. It’s the ultimate fandom for this nerdy girl!

#2: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. Ever since the announcement that Disney purchased Lucasfilm from George Lucas, I have been counting down the days till the big day. Sure, every Star Wars fan knows that May is the pivotal month for the galaxy far, far away, but I kinda love that we are getting Star Wars for Christmas this year. What can I say, I’m thankful!

#3: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. The Star Wars Universe is a vast and beautiful place. I have been reading books from the expanded universe for many years. So yes, I was initially disappointed that the canon was disbanded. (RIP Mara Jade. You will always be in our hearts!) But I’ve had plenty of time to accept the new Star Wars future. Which now includes brand new expanded universe books. And the beauty is that the old canon books are still highly enjoyable works. Bring on the

#4: Star Wars

Ok…here’s why. Star Wars brings people together. Don’t believe me? Attend Star Wars Celebration sometime. Read up on the 501st and the charity works that they are involved in. Read the story of Daniel and the petition to allow him an early viewing of The Force Awakens before his death on. When Star Wars fans gather, great things happen, internets are broken and so are records. If you still doubt the power of the Star Wars fan base, just keep an eye on the box office the weekend of December 18th. You’ll feel the Force then, I can promise you that!

#5: Marvel, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, LOST, Star Trek, Flash/ Arrow, Sherlock, Downton Abbey, Supergirl, Once Upon A Time, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead…
image
Ok…ok! I like a couple other fandoms besides Star Wars and I’m just as grateful for them. When the prospect of Star Wars looms…everything else just pales in comparison. But each of these fandoms (and many more) all have their places in my heart!!

Come countdown to The Force Awakens with me on Instagram. Tag me: @nerdinthesand and use the hashtag: #StarWarsChallenge

My 13 Fictional BFF’s

As all of my real life, non-fictional friends will know, I’m a very social person. And I love friends. I love to surround myself with people who are smarter and prettier and just all around better than me. It makes me a better person. It gives me something to aspire to. 5 fictional BFF’s seems mean cause so many fictional friends will get left out. So in honor of Friday the 13th, I will choose 13 BFF’s instead. Seems a more realistic number. Thanks to The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick for the topic!!

I’ve decided not to explain each choice, cause they all really make perfect sense!!

Ok, I admit some of these (1, 4, 5, 7, 9 & 13) were chosen to be fictional BFF’s that eventually turn into boyfriends forever, cause they are wonderful!! But can you blame me!!!

Watch This Show!

I know. I know. You don’t need a new show. You already have 7 that you just can’t miss. (Or is that just me?) But allow me to present to you Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. If Downton Abbey and Sherlock had a sassy love child, it would be Miss Fisher.

Meet Miss Phryne Fisher. Sassy, lady detective with a penchant for doing what she wants, when she wants and damn the consequences or danger! She is a modern women living in the 1920’s in upper class Australia. And she is truly fabulous from her clothes to her sleek bob to her devil may care attitude regarding convention.

Then there’s the very handsome and gentlemanly, Detective Inspector Jack Robinson. Love interest of Phryne who is constantly getting in the way of all Jack’s investigations causing the sparks to fly between them! Jack is a righteous man who always upholds justice, except when Phryne comes around and ruins all his efforts!

Next we have the adorable, budding romance between Phryne’s lady’s maid, Dot and Jack’s constable, Hugh. They are too precious for words. He’s a Protestant and she’s a devout Catholic. He’s a traditional man and she’s learning more and more about what it means to be a modern, independent woman. Which makes for adorable story!

The rest of the cast includes Cec and Bert, who are Phryne’s rough around the edges cabby’s who get the info from the rougher parts of town. Mr Butler who is Phryne’s butler, oddly enough. Aunt P is Phryne’s traditional high society Aunt who’s always shocked by Phryne’s shennanigans. Mac is Phryne’s lady doctor friend who throws convention to the dogs and helps Phryne when called upon. She also dresses in the most adorable pant suits. And finally Phryne’s ward, Jane. Taken in under Phryne’s roof along with Dot and any other young woman who may need some help.

In conclusion, this show is awesome and with only 2 series available on Netflix right now, it’s an easy binge watch. Give it a try and I dare you not to fall in love with it!

Thanks to my like-minded coworker, Emma for the recommendation!

Smart Phone Apps I Couldn’t Live Without

Today’s topic proposed by The Nerdie Girlie and Super Space Chick are 5 apps that you couldn’t live without. I’m altering a little reflect some of my favorite ones that I don’t want to live without as well as some I reluctantly can’t live without! Personally I miss not being as reliant on my phone. But it is what it is and at this point it’s a little hard to turn back. So there are the ones I love and rely on in my day to day life.

#1: Pinterest

unnamed
I loooove Pinterest. If you follow me, you’ll know just how much I love it!! (Spoiler alert: I love it a lot) And the Pinterest phone app let’s me pin stuff from anywhere at anytime and I just love that!! If you watch the BBC’s Sherlock, then you’d know what a mind palace is. And I like to think of Pinterest as my own personal mind palace. When I was in college studying fashion design, we used to make inspiration boards all the time. And I used to have boxes of magazine clippings for those boards. So I feel like I’ve been pinning things since long before Pinterest came around. And finally technology and my brain are in perfect sync. Pinterest is where I think, it’s where I dream, it’s where the magic happens!!

#2: Instagram

Instagram-icon
I really like that we are living in an age of self documentation. I have such a terrible memory. There are so many holes in my memories of growing up. And it’s cool to know that I’ll be able to look back through Instagram at the moments I felt were worthy of documentation (like Thursday’s lunch and my feet in the sand.)
And personally my face looks much better with a nice Amaro or X-Pro II filter over it. Making those moments not only memorable, but really pretty too.
I only wish that Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and other classic movie stars were still alive because I imagine their Insta feeds would be legendary!!

#3: Spotify

App-Spotify-icon
Music really is the food of life. It can instantly change your mood or reflect it. It can be uplifting. It can tell a story. It can bring people together. And Spotify allows you access to most of your favorite artists (minus Tay Swift, of course.) For a modest subscription fee you have the ability to make playlists and listen to your favorite tunes.

#4: My Fitness Pal

images

Listen… fitness is important. I genuinely enjoy working out. But as the winter approaches, so does a season of eating warm comfort foods like the ones on last week’s 5 Fandom Friday list – Click Here. As well as holiday treats like Granny’s apple pie and Uncle Lint’s garlic mashed potatoes. So I tend to need a little extra help with my fitness around this time. Enter My Fitness Pal. It’s an excellent app that tracks your food intake, nutrition stats and exercise. It gives you tips on whether or not you’re getting enough fiber or too much sugar and it projects your progress each day. It definitely helps keep me from gaining 3,000 pounds during the holidays!

#5: Google Maps

XtpTm

This one is a reluctant choice. It’s not so much a favorite app as much as it’s an app I genuinely believe I couldn’t live without. And I actually love physical real-life maps. But a couple times a week I find myself wishing for a simpler time. I wonder how we all functioned before technology started to rule our lives. I honestly don’t know anymore. Sadly we now live in a time of reliance instead of resilience. I used to much more self reliant. Like I could figure anything out. And these days without technology I tend to feel a little lost. Like I’m not sure I can find my way without my Google Map. Hopefully when the zombie apocalypse hits, we’ll find out we’re all stronger than we think we are! In a zombie apocalypse there is no time for reliance.

A very special After Who

image

Over the weekend I was invited to attend the screening and After Who taping for Doctor Who, Series 8. And incidentally the premier of the brand new 13th (if you’re counting correctly) iteration of The Doctor.

Host Chris Hardwick of The Nerdist, and proclaimed die-hard Whovian, had a panel of fellow nerds on his show, After Who, to talk about all things Doctor related.

image

Including nerd captain, Wil Wheaton of Star Trek and Big Bang Theory fame.
image

Also, Alton Brown from the Food Network, who is a big fan of Who as well.

image

And Mark Gatiss, who comes from the all important world of Sherlock, but who also writes for Doctor Who.

image

image

Dan Starkey, who plays Strax came on the show as himself and as the Sontaran commander and it was such a treat to see answer a few questions as his character. And finally Natalie Morales, from Girls came on the show to join the boys club.

image

More on the episode later. I’m still digesting everything that happened in Peter Capaldi’s first episode as The Doctor. But I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. Lots to be excited about in the new season!

imageMy friend and fellow Whovian right before the event.

Special thank you to Josh Ricks for getting us in!

Star Trek Into Darkness

Warning: This post contains spoilers.

Star Trek Into Darkness is an amazing follow up to J.J. Abram’s 2009 Star Trek.

It has everything you want and expect from something holding the illustrious title of Star Trek. But at the same time… this ain’t your daddy’s Trek. It’s updated and modern in all the right ways with plenty of nods to the past we know and love.

I mean… there was a freaking Tribble. And Khan, the baddest of the baddies in the Star Trek universe. But the twists and turns that Abrams allows his updated franchise to take only help the story.

image

image

Adding to that are very strong performances from Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and most especially Benedict Cumberbatch from the BBC’s Sherlock.

image

It was long rumored that Cumberbatch would be playing the role of Khan, but rumor was deflected with the release of his character’s name, John Harrison. But have no fear… John is a smoke screen and Khan is very real, present and dangerous!

The music is stirring, the visuals are stunning and seeing the USS-Enterprise up on the big screen again never gets old!

J.J. Abrams keeps on delivering gold. The only question remains is if he will be continuing on with Star Trek in light of his helming the Star Wars behemoth. One can only hope that he can manage them both. Because while Star Wars is in very good hands (and that warms my heart,) Star Trek could suffer from his absence. And that would be a shame!

All in all… go see it. If you’re a fan on the originals or just like a thrilling action film, it has something for everyone and is wildly entertaining!!

Encounters of Sherlock Holmes

image

If you enjoy any incarnation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s intrepid detective and his various exploits, you will enjoy ‘Encounters,’ a collection of tales about the quirky Sherlock.

The writing of each story is unique and yet the overarching tone of Doyle’s Sherlock remains intact. From his rapid violin playing to his overly quick wit.
Each story contains all the traits of the original Sherlock Holmes we know and love, but the writing is much more modern. More in line with the BBC’s Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

I was particularly fond of ‘The Post-Modern Prometheus’ by Nick Kyme. This story tells the tale of an encounter between Victor Frankenstein, his monster, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with Sherlock and Watson. It is fantastical and full of adventure.

This volume offers stories from authors: Mark Hodder, Mags L. Halliday, Cavan Scott, Nick Kyme, Paul Magrs, George Mann, Stuart Douglas, Eric Brown, Richard Dinnick, Kelly Hale, Stevie Lockley, Mark Wright, David Barnett and James Lovegrove.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and highly recommend it to both avid fans and mere admirers of Sherlock Holmes.

Not enough hours in the day!

Have you ever heard something like this… ” Oh, you like (insert show title here)? Then you’ll love (insert similar show title here).”

Happens to me all the time. I like Lost, so I’ll love Once Upon a Time. I like Star Trek, so I’ll love Battlestar Galactica. I like Dr. Who, so I’ll love Sherlock! I like Buffy, so I’ll love Firefly. I like all of the above, so I’ll love The Big Bang Theory. (I do like and have already watched every one of the aforementioned shows.)

The only problem is that I seriously don’t have enough hours in the day to get caught up on all the good stuff that’s out there to watch. I will say  that I have certainly watched my share. But I’ve made a list of things I need to catch up on. Things like Game of Thrones (I know, I know, it’s blasphemy that I haven’t got into it yet) and Stargate and Torchwood and Andromeda. Like Fringe and Eureka and Flight of the Conchords and The IT Crowd. The list is pretty long, but I’m determined to watch it all. Each and every show (some of which I’ve already started)

I just need more hours. And if anyone could figure out how to squeeze more hours out of a day, I’m convinced it’d be Dr. Sheldon Cooper.

PS. Just a thought but if Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock met Jim Parson’s Dr. Cooper, I think the intellectual world might implode! But it’d be interesting to watch!
