Fandoms I’m Thankful For

Thanksgiving is this Thursday. A time to take stock. A time to examine life. A time to count your blessings. A time to be thankful…for FANDOMS!! These are the ones I’m thankful for:

#1: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. I grew up with Star Wars. It’s the first fandom I remember being crazy about. It makes me think of family. It makes me think of powerful female figures. It makes me think Hubba Hubba Han Solo. It’s the ultimate fandom for this nerdy girl!

#2: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. Ever since the announcement that Disney purchased Lucasfilm from George Lucas, I have been counting down the days till the big day. Sure, every Star Wars fan knows that May is the pivotal month for the galaxy far, far away, but I kinda love that we are getting Star Wars for Christmas this year. What can I say, I’m thankful!

#3: Star Wars
image
Ok…here’s why. The Star Wars Universe is a vast and beautiful place. I have been reading books from the expanded universe for many years. So yes, I was initially disappointed that the canon was disbanded. (RIP Mara Jade. You will always be in our hearts!) But I’ve had plenty of time to accept the new Star Wars future. Which now includes brand new expanded universe books. And the beauty is that the old canon books are still highly enjoyable works. Bring on the

#4: Star Wars

Ok…here’s why. Star Wars brings people together. Don’t believe me? Attend Star Wars Celebration sometime. Read up on the 501st and the charity works that they are involved in. Read the story of Daniel and the petition to allow him an early viewing of The Force Awakens before his death on. When Star Wars fans gather, great things happen, internets are broken and so are records. If you still doubt the power of the Star Wars fan base, just keep an eye on the box office the weekend of December 18th. You’ll feel the Force then, I can promise you that!

#5: Marvel, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, LOST, Star Trek, Flash/ Arrow, Sherlock, Downton Abbey, Supergirl, Once Upon A Time, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead…

Ok…ok! I like a couple other fandoms besides Star Wars and I’m just as grateful for them. When the prospect of Star Wars looms…everything else just pales in comparison. But each of these fandoms (and many more) all have their places in my heart!!

30 Day of Nerdy Hair – Day 20

Day 20 – Claire from Jurassic World

By now we all know the awesome power of the mighty dinosaur. No one expected Jurassic World to sweep the box office the way it has. It even managed to kick the Avenger’s collective asses too. That’s quite the feat. It makes sense that something tied to so many of our childhood’s would get this kind of reception (I cannot wait to see Star Wars brush that record to the side.) But aside from the nostalgia, it is a really good movie!! I knew I’d like it. I didn’t know I would LOVE it!!

Bryce Dallas Howard’s, Claire is snooty, uptight, career oriented and single minded. She is far more concerned with the way things work, than whether or not she is enjoying life. It isn’t until imminent death threatens her, her nephews and an island full of people that she starts to show her humanity.

My bob is a little messier. This could be Claire after disaster strikes. A more disheveled, unkempt Claire.

I don’t have a catch phrase for this one except for “The park is open” so just go see Jurassic World if you haven’t already. If you loved the old ones, I really don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

This is how you JEM

474617f5758f4af43fcdee5d0f8adbf0

Ok I rare to never post about things I don’t like. I think there’s too much negativity on the internet already and I really don’t feel the need or desire to add to that. But I gotta talk about this new trailer for JEM and the Holograms…

WHAT THE?!?!?! This is not JEM. This is basically the 2001 Josie and the Pussycats reboot for 2015. (And yes…I secretly love that movie even though it’s terrible! But it helps if you think of it separately from the 80’s cartoon of the same name.) Which is exactly what will need to be done for any JEM fans watching this new movie. Completely put everything out of your mind that you loved about the cartoon. Like… the Misfits (they could very well be in this film, but the trailer doesn’t mention them at all). JEM being Jerrica’s alter-ego/ superpower/ hologram (it’s a thing), not her stage name! The fact that JEM is not some angsty teenager (the show is certainly not without a little angst, but come on!!) And I’m sure many other things.

Here’s where my head is at with a JEM reboot:

1. Katy Perry

Katy Perry basically is JEM in real life. She has the spirit of Jerrica Benton and she sure can sing.

2. Emma Stone

eb38d31d16ff0b3e92f9ea0404357adc

Emma Stone would make a fun, spicy JEM. Sadly, this fan art will only ever be a fan’s dream.

3. Blake Lively

Blake Lively definitely has the look of Jerrica Benton. Not sure about the singing, but in Hollywood, most impossible things are made possible.

I could cast out the whole movie. The Holograms – Kimber, Shana, Aja and Raya. The Misfits – Pizzazz, Stormer, Roxy and Jetta… But I think the lynch pin is JEM herself. And the new movie has clearly lost it’s mind in making by making it into a teeny bopper movie that may as well be called something else entirely. In fact, if they had named it something else, I might actually go see it. Cause I’m a sucker for movies like that! But why take the name and make it something so completely unrecognizable? I just don’t get it.

This is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot all over again, except without Megan Fox…thank goodness!! (Don’t even get me started on that!)

Let’s look back at the original, untouchable JEM who was truly outrageous!!!

Also, to any JEM fans out there, let me know what you think. And use the hashtag #ThisishowyouJEM to set the record straight on how this JEM and the Holograms reboot should be!!

25 days of (nerdy) Christmas!

“Dork the halls with boughs of holly.”

Days 8 & 9: Vintage Decorations

There’s nothing like pulling out that old box of Christmas decorations and discovering lost treasures. I don’t mind telling you that my box of Christmas things has been in that same box for the whole 7 years I’ve lived here. Not once have I pulled any of it out to decorate any of my New York homes for Christmas. Not sure why. Maybe I was lazy. Maybe I didn’t have the time. Or maybe it just never quite felt like home. This year I was determined to make it different. So I pulled out that old box. And here’s what I found.

Coming up on Sat, Dec 14th. The unofficial Elf tour of New York City!! 3pm come join us… stay tuned for more information.

Star Wars and Harry Potter

Before I write another word, Star Wars has always been and will always be my very favorite movies of all time. I know every line. And every time I watch any one of them my heart is immediately lightened. It’s nostalgia and joy and all manner of good things wrapped in a bow. Sort of the way you feel when you play with puppies. But with lighsabers thrown in. (Not thrown at the puppies. I hope that was clear!)

Now…I can confidentally say that Harry Potter is officially my second favorite set of movies. (LOTR is a very close third. Very close!) And let me just tell you why. I actually hadn’t seen either parts of The Deathly Hallows since they were in theaters.
And I just finished the whole series once again. Harry burdens my heart and makes me think. Harry presents simple concepts wrapped in riddles. Harry gives us Snape and Neville and Sirius and Luna. There is such a beauty in the series that just grabs my heart and holds on till the end. And each time I watch it I let myself forget all I know about it and I am taken on the ride all over again. And by the end I am knee deep in Kleenex every time.

Nothing can compare to Star Wars for me. It’s in a class all it’s own. Plus it has about 15 year of constant viewing on every other movie out there. But I truly believe nothing can quite compare to Harry Potter either. And that’s why it deserves second place on my favorite movies list. (Seriously…LOTR is really, really close behind!)

Clean watching

Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, The Chronices of Narnia, Lord of the Rings… all beloved sci-fi/ fantasy film/tv/books. And every single one almost completely devoid of salacious sex, drugs and harsh cursing. Is there such a thing to be found these days? It is rare to say the least.

Sure… there’s the occasional ‘Bloody ‘ell!’ Or a fondness for smoking a little longbottom leaf. But all in all these things are pretty safe for young minds. Which is why they are such beloved classics.

I mean two of the longest running television shows are Dr. Who and Star Trek respectively. Dr. Who celebrates it’s 50th year this year. That is a long time to still  be going strong.

These series and movies and such, captivate us as children and we hold on to them forever after that. And it’s because they are appropriate for children and adults alike. Because of this, children are introduced to these things at a young age and are immediately hooked.

image
I can’t tell you the first time I saw Star Wars or when my parents first read The Chronicles of Narnia to me.

image
Now, don’t get me wrong, I love me some Game of Thrones and The Matrix and so many other great R-rated things, but because we cannot experience these things as children, they will never quite have the kind of power that the others tend to. The kind of power that causes true and deep devotion. The power to be relevant 50 years ago and still relevant today.
