30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 9

Day 9: Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians

I had to go a little different direction with this one. I couldn’t find white hair spray and my white hair chalk failed me. But the two-tone effect is still there, making villainy that much easier!

Day 4: Marge Simpson from The Simpsons

Truth time, dear readers. This one was not done in the early hours of this beautiful Sunday morning. I did this one yesterday, knowing that having towering blue hair was probably not the best move for my Sunday schedule. First of all, I used a temporary blue hair spray. Which, while really fun to wear, is the kind of thing that would end up dripping rivers of blue once the Florida humidity hit. So I opted for a preemptive blue attack to the hair follicles.

What I learned is that I LOVE blue hair!! It’s so much fun. There’s actually still a little left in there today, if you look close enough. And I think when this series is over and I get a much needed haircut and color (goodbye roots!) I think I might make a blue a permanent addition to my hair! Thanks for the inspiration, Marge!!

Guess what’s back tomorrow!!

It’s been a while since I’ve delved into the world of Nerdy hair and I have certainly missed it. It’s a hobby I never knew I was good and certainly wasn’t good at in high school despite desperately wishing I was back then. My hair was a menace in my younger years. A curly mop of unruly hair that I had no idea what do to with on a daily basis. Most days I wore it wet and continued to wet it throughout the day. Opting for the “I just got caught in a rainstorm” look. Very popular in the 90’s.

For those of you new to Nerd in the City, here’s a little back story. One day I was reading Shape magazine, as one does, when I came across the editor’s note. She wrote a piece about her hair and not understanding what to do with it. I could so relate! She said she decided to do something about this and challenged herself to 30 days of different hairstyles. Whether it was something as simple as a pony tail or as complicated as a side swept french braid, she was gonna do something different for 3o days to learn just what her hair could do.

I was inspired! What a proactive way to handle something that had plagued her and me for years! Me being me, I had to put a nerdy spin on it somehow and thus, 30 Days of Nerdy Hair was born.

This is my 6th series. And I’m doing things a little differently this time around. Usually it’s a mystery what I’ll choose from day to day, but I wanted to give you, beautiful nerds, a chance to join the challenge. I don’t know if you have trouble with your hair or are good at it. Either way, there are hairstyles in here that I bet you can do.

I’m posting all styles up front, so you know what to look for and if I can get on my game, I hope to do some tutorials as well so you truly can do them yourselves. Use the hashtag #30DaysofNerdyHair to join in and tag me directly @nerdinthesand on Instagram so I can see your wonderful creations. Feel free to use this as guidelines, suggestions, ideas and as always, please go off the map as often as you want to.

I hope you’ll try something new in September! For those of you who have been with me from the beginning, you might see the return of some favorites and I hope to improve on the past!

5 Fandom Deaths I’m Still Upset About

Fair warning! This post contains many spoilers because one cannot talk fandom deaths without actually mentioning who it is that died. So if you haven’t watched Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, LOST, The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones than don’t look. Don’t be spoiled. Go watch those shows and come back…see you in a few months or a few years if you aren’t that dedicated to getting through them all.

Thanks to The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick for creating 5 Fandom Friday.

Here goes…

#1 – Amy and Rory from Doctor Who

cd81f94dff70f27e180ef46c0a9832ec

OK, so the fans knew this one was coming. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill were set to leave the show. It was either die or stop time traveling all together and Amy Pond would never have quit her raggedy man if she could help it. So they died. Death by old age, so not a bad way to go. But to be ripped from your own timeline by a Weeping Angel…no thanks. This episode still causes major waterworks every time I watch it. I’ll never get over losing Amy and Rory!!

#2 – Tara from Buffy the Vampire Slayer

8a6fa1ddefc462bd7b15d4482d5c66c4

There are quite a few upsetting deaths on BtVS (I’m looking at you Joyce and Jenny.) Even Buffy herself bit the bullet, not once up twice. But Tara’s death still manages to shock and upset me the most. When you see that blood splatter on Willow’s crisp white peasant blouse…Tara’s blood. Tara who was sweet and innocent and Willow’s lobster. Torn away from the mortal coil by a gun shot to the chest. This one stings because it smacks of reality. In a fantastical world like Buffy, to have died from something so human as a gun shot…well, it just sucks. We live in a world where this is far too common. And Tara’s death still feels completely unjust. Warren deserved the flaying that he got, if you ask me!

#3 – Charlie from LOST

0b6e8cac5dd069b6de6eff2970765a05

DANG! Charlie!! This one stings every time I think about it. You LOST fans know the keen loss. The pain still smarts! I never saw this one coming. I guess I should have. By season 3, people were being picked off like flies. I guess I still thought the core cast (the ones I like most) would be safe. Of course, we’d come to find out that no one is truly safe on LOST and it is Charlie’s death that really taught us that lesson. The words “Not Penny’s Boat” still haunt me. Charlie went out saving lives. The perfect symmetry to how he entered our lives. He began as a selfish, drugged out rock star and truly became a fan favorite (or at least this fan’s favorite!)

#4 – Ned Stark from Game of Thrones

8e202c0f0dbafe4140a418a7f6161c86

I’m a GOT book reader. I’ve read books 1-4 so I knew it was coming, but it still didn’t prepare me for the sadness of losing the Stark patriarch. Ned Stark was a man of justice and integrity. He kept the monarch in line and his own family. Tough job, especially when you have Lannisters against you. He was domed from the beginning because on Game of Thrones, the just and the moral get punished.

To be fair, there are more shocking and more horrifying deaths on Game of Thrones (see: Rob Stark, Catelyn Stark, Jon Snow, Ygritte, Khal Drogo, Oberyn Martell, etc.) but it’s Ned’s death that sets the tone for the series in season 1. It’s Ned’s death that sets the Lannisters up for their reign of power and ultimate downfall. And it’s Ned Stark who could have stopped the evil from spreading through Westeros. We miss you, Ned! (Please stop killing Sean Bean off of things I like!)

#5 – Hershel from The Walking Dead

e5d7f0afda9b9503f398f52de7ceb23c

The Walking Dead is another show where death is rampant and usual. It’s rarely surprising anymore (except if Darryl were to die… that would be shocking and surprising and completely upsetting…Don’t do that, AMC!) But I admit, Hershel’s death got me. I literally screamed when it happened. (That’s what happens when you watch TWD alone in your apartment with all the lights off.) Hershel was another example of someone who kept the balance. Being a good guy is a really tough business on TV. No one cared when Angela died or stupid Dale. It’s the good ones that truly rip the heart out. And Hershel’s death was my least favorite one (though Beth’s came pretty close.)

Honorable Mention – Tasha Yar from Star Trek: The Next Generation
fef62fdabeb5cb03caed9493079adf56

I want to give a shout out to one of the earliest fandom, TV deaths, Tasha Yar. Star Trek killed off Tasha way before it was cool to kill off characters. And no one saw that one coming because the internet wasn’t what it is today… or even a thing at all. So there were no rumors surrounding her upcoming death. Or fan theories about. She was an upstanding crew member who went on an away mission to a planet with a tar monster. She was taken by the tar monster…goodbye Tasha Yar.

If this post has left you feeling a little depressed and nostalgic for characters long gone, then definitely don’t go back and watch the happy times before they died. I tried that with season 1 of Game of Thrones…trust me, it only made things worse.

30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 25

Day 25: Joanna Eberhart from The Stepford Wives

Being a Stepford wife means nothing out of place. It means perfection, or at least seeming perfection.

I may not be perfect, but this hair rocks!!!! And what’s great about the “Stepford” hair is that you can definitely wear it all day to any event.

30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 24

Day 24: Young Elsa from Disney’s Frozen

Disney characters always have great hair!! And not only the older ones, but the kiddos as well. So today I picked young Elsa. Just starting to learn about her magic and when she freely used it with no thought of the dangers. Little Elsa lives life with very little fear.

image

This one is super easy to accomplish. You need a black headband and a nice braid in the back. And it’s an easy everyday style that doesn’t scream Disney princess. (Although personally, I love when my hair screams Disney princess. It’s so much fun!!)

“The cold never bothered me anyway.”

30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 18

Day 18: Princess Leia from Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Today marks exactly 6 months till we are able to feast our eyes on the brand new edition to the Star Wars Universe, The Force Awakens. In honor of the countdown I chose to do Princes Leia hair today.

On the forest moon of Endor, the Rebel Alliance makes a stand against the Empire. Princess Leia, leader, senator, bad ass lady… always has a killer braided hairdo for any occasion and in Return of the Jedi, she does not disappoint. What’s great about this style is that it’s versatile. She has the majority of her hair braided on top of her head and the rest is rolled into small buns in the back so they can easily be taken down later for a softer look. But if you have to run through the forest and fight the forces of darkness, then this hair is for you!

a5954725f41f7829f3d865db903e8436

You can’t go wrong with a well executed braid!! And I know it’s gonna last all day. And since Star Wars is my favorite and incidentally, the best movies ever, wearing this around all day is my great honor!!

May the hair be with you!!

Don’t miss the rest of the series (12 days to do) and also check out other events happening with Nerd in the City, like our #NerdySlumberParty

There will be giveaways and great conversation. Bring your friends because all are welcome at this party!!

30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 9

Day 9: Hercules from Disney’s Hercules

It isn’t just the Disney Princesses that can cause hair envy. Sometimes the Disney men folk have great hair too, actually a lot of them have great hair! Case in point, my man, Hercules. Check out those curls!! He could accessorize like nobody’s business! Yep, Herc sure knew what to do with that gorgeous mane of ginger hair!

image

I’m sad to report that my hair did not quite go the distance. The second I walked outside into the rainy, humidity my Herc curl fell like the Titans against Zeus. I don’t really use hairspray when creating these hairstyles, but perhaps in this instance it might have helped.

Zero to Hairo (ok maybe that one was a bit cheesy!)
