Apocalypse Research

It seems as if America has been anticipating this zombie apocalypse for quite a while. The number of movies and TV shows about it is astounding. Almost as if someone out there knew it was coming….hmmmm.

While the electricity is still working, why not take some down time and do a little research for what is about to become your current reality…

Zombieland

zombieland-poster

This is the perfect movie to refer to for zombie apocalypse survival. There are survival tips and everything and it’s funny. And let’s face it, now’s the time when funny is really gonna be the thing that gets you through. Laughter really is the best medicine!

The Walking Dead

the-walking-dead-season-3-poster-full

There are 6 seasons of The Walking Dead (season 7 is set to premier on October 23rd, but given that reality just started imitating art…who knows.) That’s a whole lot of field research to dissect. Season 1 is all about fighting zombies, learning to survive, the art of hand to hand combat and which weapons are the best ones to pick. By the time you get to season 6, the zombies are the least of everyone’s worries and people become the main threat.

While I do recommend going through the whole Walking Dead journey, you’re crunched for time. Who knows how many days are left till the power just runs out. So skip ahead to seasons 5 and 6. The group’s confidence and bad assery are just what you should be watching right now.

Fear the Walking Dead

unknown

To watch a bunch of people who have no idea what to do against zombies, refer to Fear the Walking Dead. A great show. But because of the journey taken on The Walking Dead, watching these people not know what they’re doing is almost like take 12 steps backwards. Still plenty of great moments to use for research on your future zombie hunting endeavors. But I’d say to stick to the big boys and watch The Walking Dead instead.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

prideprejudicesmall1

This one is fun, whimsical and totally bad ass! The perfect choice for anyone looking to train in hand to hand combat and get more proficient with a blade. Plus if the Bennett sisters can fight the hoards in Regency Era dresses, you can certainly fight in your Old Navy jeans and Forever 21 tops! You got this!

Dawn of the Dead

dawnofthedead

I’ve actually never seen Dawn of the Dead. I don’t particularly like scary movies. But reality just became a whole lot scary than any movie. So now is the time to give it a look.

Shaun of the Dead

mv5bmtu2nja0ndk0nv5bml5banbnxkftztcwota0otqzmw-_v1_uy1200_cr5706301200_al_

And of course, if you’re going to watch Dawn of the Dead, you should follow it up with Shaun of the Dead. Because, again…laughter, humor, levity…these are the things that will remind you that life is worth fighting for. And Simon Pegg is a king of comedy!

28 Days Later

mv5bmtk3njewndmzmf5bml5banbnxkftztgwmzgwndgwnze-_v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_

Same argument here as for Dawn of the Dead. But make sure not to get it confused with 28 Days, which has absolutely nothing to do with the zombie apocalypse.

Warm Bodies

warm_bodies_theatrical_poster

And finally, the tender love story of a girl and her zombie. Love in the time of apocalypse…it’s harder than it looks on TV. So enjoy movies that remind you of romance, because dating in an apocalypse? Not really a thing. But more on that later!

Happy watching and remember…STAY ALIVE!

The Only Girl in the World

When I was growing up…there was only one girl in the whole world that I wanted to be. I didn’t have a lot of choices. Leading ladies in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s were few and far between to say the least.
Princess Leia Organa girl Star Wars blog
One girl in Star Wars (Princess Leia.) One girl in Superman (Lois Lane.) One girl in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (April O’Neil.) Two girls in Power Rangers…what a revelation (Pink and Yellow.) One girl in Terminator (Sarah Connor.) Are you sensing the trend.
There’s something that all these ladies have in common…they are memorable. They are iconic. I wanted to be all of them, but again none more so than Princess Leia.

Do you ever wonder what the writers and directors and movie makers of 80’s were thinking when they created these amazing films and amazing stories and then slapped a token chick in there. They didn’t skip on the bad assery, they just skipped on the quantity.

The battle for the ladies is not over. It’s still going on. To date Wonder Woman has never made it to the big screen. I know…she’s on her way. But dang, 2016 and the most well known female superhero of all time has only been allowed to shine on the small screen? And how many Batman reboots have we had? Come on now.

For me, Princess Leia was the only girl in the world. I always got to be her. I wanted everything that had her on it. What were my options as an avid lover of Star Wars? Aunt Beru? Mon Mothma? Both female characters. Both important in their own right. But there was only one Princess Leia.

Sure, things are changing and there are a whole lot more girls in the world of Star Wars for young girls to look up to and dress up as and base entire life choices on! And none so exciting as Rey. (That’s not to say girls can’t emulate the boys. Because go feminism and gender swapping and equality for all!!)

Change takes time. I’m not saying it’s ok. I’m just saying that’s how change works sometimes. It’s slow way too slow and I think Hollywood is still catching up. But with Star Wars The Force Awakens pulling in the record breaking money that it has been since December 18th and a fierce lady lead at the helm, the fat cats must be reading the writing on the wall!! And that is an encouraging thought!

30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 18

Day 18: Princess Leia from Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Today marks exactly 6 months till we are able to feast our eyes on the brand new edition to the Star Wars Universe, The Force Awakens. In honor of the countdown I chose to do Princes Leia hair today.

On the forest moon of Endor, the Rebel Alliance makes a stand against the Empire. Princess Leia, leader, senator, bad ass lady… always has a killer braided hairdo for any occasion and in Return of the Jedi, she does not disappoint. What’s great about this style is that it’s versatile. She has the majority of her hair braided on top of her head and the rest is rolled into small buns in the back so they can easily be taken down later for a softer look. But if you have to run through the forest and fight the forces of darkness, then this hair is for you!

a5954725f41f7829f3d865db903e8436

You can’t go wrong with a well executed braid!! And I know it’s gonna last all day. And since Star Wars is my favorite and incidentally, the best movies ever, wearing this around all day is my great honor!!

May the hair be with you!!

Don’t miss the rest of the series (12 days to do) and also check out other events happening with Nerd in the City, like our #NerdySlumberParty

30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 10

Day 10: Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) from Avengers: Age of Ultron

If you haven’t seen Avengers: Age of Ultron then you must be living in a dark cave somewhere, far away from civilization and a movie theater.  As of now, the movie has made over 1.3 billion dollars worldwide. So…yeah. It’s kind of a big deal. And if you’re looking for a favorite Avenger, allow me to present Black Widow! She is one seriously bad ass lady, especially since she has to deal with so many men. That a tough gig!

image

Not to mention that Natasha’s hair manages to be ready for action and/ or a photo shoot at any given moment. If I had to kick bad guy’s butts on the regular, I promise you, my hair wouldn’t look this good all the time!

Obviously I have a week spot for Joker’s criminally insane girlfriend, Harley Quinn. Darth Vader follows at a close second. I love to laugh and I used to watch Batman: The Animated Series back in the 90’s (who are we kidding, I still watch it!) And Harley always cracked me up. So yeah, she gets my vote over the baddest of the bad, Darth Vader himself. It doesn’t have to make sense. 😉 Life is a little more fun when it doesn’t, in fact!!

Incidentally, if you’ve never watched Batman: The Animated Series, then I suggest you do it… now!! And I am personally crying for your lost childhood, cause this series is amazing and also has Mark Hamill doing t

Top 5 Halloween Movies

fandom.5.friday

Graphic from The Nerdy Girlie

It’s time for another 5 Fandom Friday topic from Super Space Chick and The Nerdy Girlie. Today’s topic is Top 5 Halloween Movies. Now, personally, I hate scary movies!! There’s not one that I’ve seen that I actually enjoyed. A friend of mine is always begging me to see the latest scary movie with him and about every 2 years I indulge him. And I always regret it afterwards. I don’t really understand why people like to be scared. I’d rather be laughing. But that’s just me. That being said, I LOVE Halloween! I love to dress up and I love to watch non-scary Halloween movies. So here’s my list of non-scary Halloween movies for those of you out there who are like me and don’t really like to experience fear and terror!!

1. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

dj.uoczwlwz.170x170-75

This is an obvious first choice! It’s fun and funny and filled with nostalgia. If you’ve never seen this movie, then I worry about your childhood. Was it a happy time for you? Go watch it and make up for lost times!! Seriously. Don’t spend another day having not seen this movie! It’s great for all the kids out there and for the adults who still act like kids!

2. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

f0423019d9f794b603fe7a4e527c6a8d

Truth be told, any of the Harry Potter movies are wonderful to watch on Halloween. But out of all of them, Azkaban is the most Halloweeney of the bunch. Could be director, Alfonso Cuaron’s unique take on the franchise. The talking shrunken heads, the “Something wicked this way comes” song. It’s a perfect choice for Halloween.

3. Nightmare Before Christmas

f7a1330003bc1d0997c0ec929836ddfa

What’s great about this one is that chances are pretty good that your mind is already starting to drift towards the Christmas season. It’s inevitable and seems to start a little earlier every year. Nightmare brilliantly  melds Halloween and Christmas, making it the perfect holiday gateway movie! Also, it’s safe to say that Tim Burton could be named King of Halloween and no one would object!

4. Casper

19a1d65182e64ae9206fe461c5c874d2

Ok, so he’s not the spookiest ghost  out there, but he’s probably the cutest! And when I was 13 years old and first saw this movie, I immediately loved it. The presence of teen heart-throb, Devon Sawa didn’t hurt matters! That scene when he walks down the stairs after becoming human, looking all dashing with his blond 90’s bowl cut… be still my heart!!

5. Zombieland

2e9eefe0c38388f2ffe4617beb651cd3

Last, but not least. It would be wrong not to have a zombie flick on the list. Zombieland has all the blood, guts and hard hitting double taps you could ever want. But it’s also hilarious! Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin make the perfect quartet of zombie killing bad asses!

What will you be watching this Halloween? Let me know in the comments below. And check back next week for another 5 Fandom Friday topic!

5 Fandom Friday

Super Space Chick and The Nerdy Girlie have issued a blog challenge. Post a top 5 within the preset topic chosen each Friday. This week’s topic is “Characters I Would Love To Dress Up As For Halloween.” Instead of doing the 5 costumes I want to dress up as this year, I’m going to do 5 costumes I have attempted in the past.

I looooove Halloween! It’s such a fun holiday. When we were kids, my brother, my cousin and I would get all dressed up, sometimes with a costume theme in mind, and go out trick or treating all night. And we lived in the kind of neighborhood that gave out homemade cookies and whole candy bars. It was pretty much the best thing ever! Once we got our haul we would come back to our house, dump our loot on the floor and proceed to play the trade game. You know… 3 Snickers for a bag of Skittles. 5 Tootsie Rolls for a Twix. That kind of thing. Being the oldest, sometimes I could trick the younger ones into thinking the candy I didn’t want was exactly what they needed. Like a Peanut Chew.

Parents… don’t put Peanut Chews in your Halloween bowls this Halloween. They are the pennies of the candy world. No one wants them. Skittles, Twix, 3 Musketeers, Twizzlers. These are what the kids want! Don’t try to be cheap on Halloween and give out Peanut Chews. And don’t even get me started on Nougat! You may as well move if you’re giving out Nougat.

Ok… back to the Top 5!

1. WONDER WOMAN

1394048_10104975556247243_5444375591480449332_n (1)

Wonder Woman is a favorite of pretty much every girl born before 2000 and a personal favorite of mine. And with all the upcoming projects in DC I’m sure she’ll be appealing to a brand new generation. I was about 8 years old when I dressed up as Wonder Woman and my brother was Superman. We wore these pajamas all the time so it was a cost effect and Super easy costume for Halloween (see what I did there!) If I did this costume now, it would be a much more elaborate recreation, but as an 8 year old… if you can choose between a tight, body constricting costume and your pajamas… you go with the pajamas. Heck, as an adult if you can choose between a tight, body constricting costume and your pajamas…you just can’t go wrong with pajamas on Halloween (as long as it isn’t “pajama” lingerie. That’s a no go!)

2. PRINCESS LEIA

wpid-IMG_20130531_222009.jpg

977633_10103082973333573_350859630_o

This is another one with mass appeal. Princess Leia, circa A New Hope is the easiest of the Leia costumes to replicate. White dress, hair in buns, a good blaster at your side and your done! As I mentioned my brother, my cousin and I greatly enjoyed dressing up in a group. One year we were Tinkerbell, Captain Hook and Tiger Lily. This particular year we were Princess Leia, Han Solo and Wicket W. Warrick (if that name doesn’t sound familiar to you then I question your Star Wars knowledge!!) And it is still one of my very favorite family Halloween’s. I haven’t dressed up as Leia as an adult yet, maybe because that year was so good I don’t want to taint it, but I did do Leia buns for my 30 Days of Nerdy Hair blog series and my buns have gotten way better if I do say so myself!!

3. “SEXY” CATWOMAN

Screenshot_2014-10-17-10-44-23-1

I could have sworn that all photographic evidence of this disaster had been destroyed, but alas… there is proof that I gave this “sexy” thing a try and failed hard. (Sorta glad I didn’t achieve “sexy” status. It’s not really my thing!) I cannot stand “sexy” Halloween costumes. They lack creativity as well as material over vital body parts. They’re obvious and cheaply made and fly in the face of hard working cosplayers the world over. That being said…back in college I was highly susceptible to peer influences and pressures. And I attempted to create a “sexy” costume one year. (Hey… all the cool kids were doing it.)For more on this geek tragedy check back on Oct. 28th for a special Halloween episode of my web series, So… This Happened in which I talk about that poorly attempted “sexy” costume. In the meantime, check out the rest of the series in anticipation. Click HERE.

4. CALIFORNIA MOUNTAIN SNAKE

Screenshot_2014-10-17-10-49-48-1

Screenshot_2014-10-17-10-49-01-1

This costume is another easy one to do. And while you may not get the mass recognition of Black Mamba’s tell tale yellow suit, when you do get recognized it will be by true fans of the Kill Bill movies. And it ends up being so much more satisfying. Make sure not to carry a real Katana around, that can get you into serious trouble. And if you don’t have the fighting skills of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, do you really need a real Katana anyways?

5. Buffy Summers

IMG_3268

IMG_3273

IMG_3255

IMG_3245

This is my favorite Halloween costume I’ve done as an adult. This is a great one to do with friends especially if you have a token redhead in your life. Also fairly easy (I’m all about easy!) Plus taking this costume on the road and trying it on location (ie. a dark and stormy night in Astoria Park) is a fun way to immerse yourself in your chosen Halloween persona. And who better to portray than the butt kicking, vamp dusting, blond haired bad ass herself, the Buffster! (Willow sold separately.)

As you can see the older I get the better my costumes get. By the time I’m 40 (Yikes that’s less than 9 years away) my costumes will be so good I’ll look like I stepped right off the Paramount Lot!

Happy early Halloween. I can’t wait to see everyone’s costumes. Make sure to send pictures and check back for more Halloween goodness later on!

30 Days of Nerdy Hair

Day 1: O’ren Ishii from Kill Bill

Welcome back to my blog series: 30 Days of Nerdy Hair. In which I attempt to recreate 30 hairstyles from movies, television, popculture, comics, video games, etc.

Last year was such a success that I’m bringing it back a little eary this year.
I’m always looking for suggestions, so comment below if you have any thoughts!

To kick off the series I chose Lucy Liu’s O’ren Ishii from Kill Bill.

image

This look is pretty simple. Start by parting your hair a little off center. Create a bun in the back and add chopsticks. For realism, a little blood on the chopsticks goes a long way (though I don’t personally recommend it.)

image

The most important element to this style is sleekness. O’ren Ishii dishes out serious assassin bad-assery without a hair out of place.

I Like It and I Don’t Care What You Think!

Here’s the thing… I like Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Spike TV was having a marathon last weekend… as usual. And possibly in lieu of the 30th anniversary of Return of the Jedi.

And sure… it’s a weak installment in the canon and I could write a list of things that didn’t work for me and nothing beats the original trilogy… duh! But I’m a glass-half-full kinda girl and I like to focus on things I like in a movie.

So haters… move along.

1. John Williams returned to score The Phantom Menace and beautifully scored it was. Duel of the Fates is one of my favorite pieces of music not only in the Star Wars universe but in movie music history. It’s powerful and poignant! And I can’t wait to hear what Williams has in store for Ep. VII.

2. Darth Maul holds up as a super baddie!! Ok, so he’ll never be Darth Vader. No one will ever be Darth Vader. But Maul has a great fighting style. He’s fast, looks scary as all get out and weilds a two-sided lightsaber. Pretty dang bad-ass!!

3. Foreshadowing. I love, love, love foreshadowing.

4. Awesomely wild costumes!!

And finally 5. Qui-Gon Jinn. What a great addition to the Jedi counsel. Liam Neeson’s Jinn is part rebel, part devoted member of the counsel. The force flows through him, but he walks his own path. His death was surprising and tragic for the Jedi and for the audience.

There you have it. Agree or don’t. But I am predisposed to love anything and everything Star Wars. The extended universe, the prequels, Star Wars Clone Wars… even the Star Wars Christmas Special. I love it all and it’s all near and dear to my heart. The future films will be no exception!! Can not wait.
