The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Teaser has officially landed. And it is AWESOME!!!!! Starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Donnie Yen, Alan Tudyk and more!! This film is set in the time period right before Episode IV: A New Hope. “Resistance fighters band together on a daring mission to steal plans for the Empire’s Death Star.”
Take a look…
And let me know what you think!! As for me… there aren’t enough dancing Oscar Isaacs in the world to describe my joy…but this is a start…
When I was growing up…there was only one girl in the whole world that I wanted to be. I didn’t have a lot of choices. Leading ladies in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s were few and far between to say the least.
One girl in Star Wars (Princess Leia.) One girl in Superman (Lois Lane.) One girl in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (April O’Neil.) Two girls in Power Rangers…what a revelation (Pink and Yellow.) One girl in Terminator (Sarah Connor.) Are you sensing the trend.
There’s something that all these ladies have in common…they are memorable. They are iconic. I wanted to be all of them, but again none more so than Princess Leia.
Do you ever wonder what the writers and directors and movie makers of 80’s were thinking when they created these amazing films and amazing stories and then slapped a token chick in there. They didn’t skip on the bad assery, they just skipped on the quantity.
The battle for the ladies is not over. It’s still going on. To date Wonder Woman has never made it to the big screen. I know…she’s on her way. But dang, 2016 and the most well known female superhero of all time has only been allowed to shine on the small screen? And how many Batman reboots have we had? Come on now.
For me, Princess Leia was the only girl in the world. I always got to be her. I wanted everything that had her on it. What were my options as an avid lover of Star Wars? Aunt Beru? Mon Mothma? Both female characters. Both important in their own right. But there was only one Princess Leia.
Sure, things are changing and there are a whole lot more girls in the world of Star Wars for young girls to look up to and dress up as and base entire life choices on! And none so exciting as Rey. (That’s not to say girls can’t emulate the boys. Because go feminism and gender swapping and equality for all!!)
Change takes time. I’m not saying it’s ok. I’m just saying that’s how change works sometimes. It’s slow way too slow and I think Hollywood is still catching up. But with Star Wars The Force Awakens pulling in the record breaking money that it has been since December 18th and a fierce lady lead at the helm, the fat cats must be reading the writing on the wall!! And that is an encouraging thought!
There are only 7 months to go till Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens will be hitting theaters and changing our world as we know it. Which mean I only have 7 months for my Star Wars Book Club Challenge. Tall order, but I am determined to get through as many of them as I physically can.
Don’t forget to join me… if you feel up to the challenge! This week I’d reading the second book in Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy, Dark Force Rising.
Tension is rising as Princess Leia attempts to confront a tribe of Noghri who have been made slaves by the Empire to track and kill her.
Dark Jedi, Joruus C’boath is on a mission to bring Leia, her force sensitive, unborn twins and Luke to him to teach the dark side of the Force.
And Han and Lando embark on a mission of their own to find out who has been double crossing the New Republic and trying to overthrow Admiral Ackbar and Mon Monthma’s leadership.
As previously mentioned, in my family, we celebrate with a bit more pizazz than your average Joe. We vote the previous year on what our theme will be. This year was Star Wars. The ultimate theme. All of us have a pretty even love of it. (Except my Grandma, but even she got in the spirit) Then throughout the year we all individually research who we want to be and start claiming characters. This process can be viewed at www.sterlinghutchinson.com/christmas
When it comes to the day itself we all show up to my Granny’s house in full costume and resume Christmas as usual. Including breakfast, stockings, presents, pictures and videos in front of the green screen and a new tradition… the singing of the themed carols. Yours truly penned a few Star Wars Christmas Carols. ie: “Leia, It’s Cold Outside” “God Rest Ye Merry Stormtroopers” “O Jedi Knight” and countless others.
This year we had some extra joiners. Non family members who were just interested in the phenomenon and wanted to be apart of it. So take a look at the photos here and if you’d like to join next year just remember two things: 1. The theme is going to be Lord of the Rings and 2. Costumes are not a suggestion… they are mandatory!
