Dating and Star Wars

Star Wars blog post

It was a blind date…plain and simple. I walked into it with the lowest of expectations, because experience had taught me to be cautious and common sense had taught me to be sensible. I wasn’t bitter or jaded about the endeavor…not yet, at least. Just realistic, something I try very hard not to be on a regular basis.

I walked in head held higher than my hopes. Because I am a people person. Talking…I’m good at that. And after all, a blind date need only go on as long as you want it to. What’s the worst that could possibly have happened?

We sat down, ordered drinks and immediately dove for the basket of bread at the same time. Bread is a comfort food and clearly we were both feeling the kind of discomfort that can only come when a friend of a friend sets you up with a friend of a friend’s friend. Or however the hell fate had brought us together that night.

The first question he thought of was “what’s your favorite movie?” A seemingly innocuous question for anyone…anyone but me, that is.

Because I don’t just have a favorite movie…I have a favorite movement. I have a favorite fandom! I have something that dominates a lot of my brain space and most of my wardrobe!! I have…STAR WARS!!!

Star Wars blog post

Now, when it comes to dating, there are a lot of things…”skeletons”…that belong in a person’s closet until someone know’s you better than what is possible on a first date. My love of Star Wars turned out to be a skeleton that I should have left buried in my closet. But this was before I knew that I wasn’t supposed to tell boys on dates that I liked loved LIVED Star Wars.

Moments after the question came tumbling out of his mouth, I quickly responded with a short and sweet, “Star Wars!”

Intrigued, he opened Pandora’s box and asked, “Oh yeah, which one?”

I smiled to myself and said, “All of them.”

“No!” he said. “Which of the movies is your favorite one?”

“Well,” I said. “The Empire Strikes back is arguably the best of all of them. Though, we have to ask ourselves…where would we be without A New Hope? And yet, if I’m being honest…it’s Return of the Jedi that tugs hardest at my heart strings. Something about the Throne Room scene has always captivated me the most. As Luke wrestles with his darker nature, the Emperor slowly starts to lose his grip on his most prized apprentice. Which brings me to the prequels…I personally love all of them too. The overarching story of Anakin Skywalker’s descent into darkness and inevitable betrayal of the Jedi forces me to ask so many questions about the movie franchise I grew up with and love dearly. That’s so interesting to me. Sure…sure…they’re flawed movies. But that doesn’t diminish their value to the franchise overall, in my opinion. Does…does that answer your question?”

With a vaguely terrified look on his face, he responded, “I liked the first one.” As he rolled his eyes and ducked his head, I knew…this date was over.

Now, some may think my answer was a bit showy, possibly a display of nerd elitism…but I assure you, it was an answer that came from the purest place in my heart. A place that just wanted to find commonality in the midst of adversity. And yet, this man was immediately disinterested in me based on my lengthy answer to his simple question.

I’ve learned over the years that this question is best answered with much more care than I gave it on that date. Perhaps I should have said less and smiled more. But that’s just not who I am. And isn’t the point of a first date to get to know the other person and show them who you are? Wasn’t that what I was doing? Like a bull in a China shop, I had wrecked the whole damn thing.

I set my bread down on my napkin, thanked him for his time and I left. The look on his face told me all I needed to know. In his eyes…I was a freak. A Star Wars freak! Little did he know…that was perfectly fine with me!

I didn’t leave the date because Star Wars is a deal breaker…though now, it totally is! I didn’t leave because he seemed mildly intimidated and borderline afraid of me. I left because I may not have known him, but I know me! If he was turned off by my passion for Star Wars and couldn’t even understand it in the least, meaning he didn’t feel as passionately about anything as much as I do about that galaxy far, far away….then, what was the point of wasting an hour of small talk on him. Or of him wasting his time on me?

Some people just aren’t meant to be together. And we were a case in point.

I choose my words more carefully when on blind dates these days. I keep my skeleton in the closet longer than I used to, but not too long. I won’t hide who I am. And if they don’t like it, I ain’t interested. And, come on! There are way worse skeletons you could have in your closet than some handmade Padmé cosplay, a Darth Maul lightsaber, a wardrobe full of Star Wars t-shirts, a book case full of Star Wars novels (both Legends and new Disney canon) and the ability to recite from memory most, if not all, of the original trilogy.

Hell, a first date spent debating the evils and virtues of Jar Jar Binks would be a success in my book. Is that too high a bar to set? I think not!

A Thought on Alderaan

I want to take a moment and share a couple thoughts I’ve been having about the fateful planet of Alderaan.

Alderaan Star Wars

When we are first introduced to Alderaan (in Episode IV: A New Hope) it is the home world of the one and only Princess Leia. Which in and of itself is enough of a reason for us to care  about it’s fate, but beyond that we know nothing. We don’t know what it looks like, whether it’s a rocky planet or a lush planet, whether the people get along on Alderaan. Do some people side with the Empire and others with the Rebellion? The fact is, in those early moments of A New Hope, we know so little about Alderaan. Therefore, the fact that an entire planet is destroyed is tragic, yes. But we are not deeply invested in Alderaan itself.

Jump ahead to the prequels and the Clone Wars and Rebels and the comic books and the many novelizations both canon and legend that are out there. Some are chalk full of information about the mysterious planet of Alderaan. And just like that, years later…posthumously, we come to care for it quite a lot.

A Thought on Alderaan blog post Star Wars

We see what it looks like in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. We know more about Bail Organa and the upstanding man he is. The kind of man who would take an orphaned Leia and raise her has his own. The kind of man that believed in the Jedi to the bitter end. The kind of man that died on the planet of Alderaan that sad day when Governor Tarkin chose to use it as an example to keep the galaxy in line.

Bail Organa a Thought on Alderaan Star Wars blog post

It’s no longer a mysterious planet, it’s a tragic, ill-fated planet. Obi-Wan sensing that not only an entire planet full of people had been killed, but an old friend as well means that much more when we start to see the whole picture.

In some story telling, we may be treated to the whole picture from the get go. Like say…starting at the beginning and working through to the end, but not with Star Wars. No, we start in the middle of the story. Not knowing about Darth Vader and his past as Anakin Skywalker, hero of the Clone Wars. Not knowing about Alderaan, the peaceful planet with the beloved Bail Organa on it.

The more the picture broadens, the deeper we understand. The more we care. It’s what I love so much about Star Wars. It’s what keeps the expanded universe going. It’s what makes it so interesting.

Catalyst STar Wars book club December 2016

I’m currently reading Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel with my Goodreads book club, in preparation for Rogue One’s release on Thursday night. It deals directly with the creation of the dreaded Death Star and we learn that there are other planets that were sacrificed in order to create that monstrous weapon. Another poignant reason to remember poor Alderaan. I went back and watched A New Hope with this brand new information on my mind and it made the destruction of Alderaan so much more tragic and unbearable.

Alderaan…you went too soon. And we didn’t understand at the time or care as deeply as we do now…in the aftermath. But yes…now we know!

The more you know gif

The Only Girl in the World

When I was growing up…there was only one girl in the whole world that I wanted to be. I didn’t have a lot of choices. Leading ladies in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s were few and far between to say the least.
Princess Leia Organa girl Star Wars blog
One girl in Star Wars (Princess Leia.) One girl in Superman (Lois Lane.) One girl in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (April O’Neil.) Two girls in Power Rangers…what a revelation (Pink and Yellow.) One girl in Terminator (Sarah Connor.) Are you sensing the trend.
There’s something that all these ladies have in common…they are memorable. They are iconic. I wanted to be all of them, but again none more so than Princess Leia.

Do you ever wonder what the writers and directors and movie makers of 80’s were thinking when they created these amazing films and amazing stories and then slapped a token chick in there. They didn’t skip on the bad assery, they just skipped on the quantity.

The battle for the ladies is not over. It’s still going on. To date Wonder Woman has never made it to the big screen. I know…she’s on her way. But dang, 2016 and the most well known female superhero of all time has only been allowed to shine on the small screen? And how many Batman reboots have we had? Come on now.

For me, Princess Leia was the only girl in the world. I always got to be her. I wanted everything that had her on it. What were my options as an avid lover of Star Wars? Aunt Beru? Mon Mothma? Both female characters. Both important in their own right. But there was only one Princess Leia.

Sure, things are changing and there are a whole lot more girls in the world of Star Wars for young girls to look up to and dress up as and base entire life choices on! And none so exciting as Rey. (That’s not to say girls can’t emulate the boys. Because go feminism and gender swapping and equality for all!!)

Change takes time. I’m not saying it’s ok. I’m just saying that’s how change works sometimes. It’s slow way too slow and I think Hollywood is still catching up. But with Star Wars The Force Awakens pulling in the record breaking money that it has been since December 18th and a fierce lady lead at the helm, the fat cats must be reading the writing on the wall!! And that is an encouraging thought!

Now What Do You Do?

If you haven’t yet seen Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, then I’d venture to say it’s only a matter of time till you do.

X-Wings Star Wars The Force Awakens recap blog

The biggest pop culture event of all time…even the Muggles want to be a part of this. There’s a lot of new people discovering the wonderful world of Star Wars. Maybe they just never devoted the time to watch all 6 movies before (or 3 if you’re a purist.) Maybe they thought it was kid’s stuff, but now are discovering the truth.

Inevitably they’re gonna reach a point where they’re going to wonder…”Now what?” It always happens after the excitement and fervor of a new movie dies down. It happens to me after binge-watching a show or reading a great book series or watching a new Star Wars movie. It’s hard because all you (I) want to do is immerse in the fictional world you’ve (I’ve) just been a part of. It recently happened to me after watching 4 straight seasons of Scandal. It happened after reading Harry Potter, but nowhere has it hit as hard as with the Star Wars Universe.

So…you’ve seen Star Wars. You’re in what Amazon likes to call a #Showhole. But there’s good news. This is where the fun begins. This is when you can start to discover what we die hard fans have been doing to stay in touch with that galaxy far, far away for years.

It’s called the Expanded Universe and it’s marvelous!

Here’s what you’re gonna do…If you’ve been living in a cave and have just emerged after 12 long years and haven’t had time to take a shower and get yourself to the movie theater quite yet…then Step 1 is pretty clear.

Complete Star Wars Saga. Episode I - VI

And if you haven’t gone back and watched the 6 movies that came before then…actually scratch that other Step 1… this is Step 1.

Star Wars Rebels Disney XD

Next up is the television universe created by Cartoon Network and Disney XD in the form of Clone Wars (seasons 1-6 available on Netflix) and Rebels (season 1 available on Netflix, season 2 currently airing on Disney XD.)

New Expanded Universe Novels by Disney Story Group

After watching all that, go to your local book store and pick up the newest novels in the Expanded Universe: Dark Disciple, Lords of the Sith, Tarkin, A New Dawn, Heir to the Jedi, Aftermath, Lost Stars, etc. These novels start to build the world around what you know and have seen on screen. They fill in the blanks and flesh out the questions. They also allow supporting characters to have rich story lines.

Star Wars Comic Books by Marvel

After you’ve read all that, head to your local comic book store and dive into the Expanded Universe created by Marvel Comics. The comic runs for Star Wars, Lando, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Kanan… The best thing about all this material is that is fits together like one giant puzzle. Each component working with the rest. It’s very impressive!

If you’ve done all that and are still thirsty for more. Go see Episode VII 2 or 3 or 12 more times so you know the dialogue by heart and then…

Go deep or go home.

Star Wars Legends Expanded Universe Timothy Zahn

The Star Wars Universe goes beyond Disney cannon. But I warn you, this step is not for the faint of heart. It involves heart break, misery and long hours reading amazing stories that are now considered mere Legend in the Star Wars Universe.

You wanted more and here it is! Silver platter not included!

God Rest Ye, Merry Stormtroopers

5 years ago I wrote some nerdy Christmas Carols for my family…

IMG_2911

I always dreamed of recording them one day and this fall while I was out in California, a reunion with an old friend started me down the path to seeing that dream realized.
Thanks to Kevin Porter of Flash Grove Music for interpreting my vision and making it a reality!
Thanks to Jessica Eriksen of Blue Moon Photography for helping me with the photoshoot!
And of course thanks to my brother, Jeremy Twachtman, who in the final hour was able to get a video ready so fast my head may have spun!

It takes a village to realize a dream…
Merry Christmas, enjoy and if you like it pass it on!!

If Weird Al and Taylor Swift had a love child…it would be me! (Let that sink in for a moment…)

*All Star Wars characters are owned by Disney! I’m just a fangirl showing my love!!

Star Wars Re-Watch (Episode IV)

Obviously the Force is strongest with the original trilogy. No one in their right mind would try to argue otherwise.
image

So here we go…

Episode IV:

-I have associated the 20th Century Fox fanfare with Star Wars for as long as I can remember. I was always disappointed when I heard it and Star Wars didn’t play right after! That’s what you call a #nerdworldproblem

-See…sometimes Stormtroopers hit things. Like Rebel extras on the Tantive IV

-VADER!!! But also…ANI!!!
image

-Who knew that those buns would become such an iconic hairstyle?

-Why did R2 stay with 3PO for so long? He’s such a nag!
image

-It’s just crazy to think about Vader being Leia’s father in these scenes. That is an added layer that I think is very cool.

-And…we’re back on Tatooine. The freaking sand trap of the galaxy. Everyone ends up on Tatooine sooner or later.

-R2 vs the Jawas!

-Why didn’t R2 just fly away? Huh, R2?  Where are your rocket jets now??

-There are long stretches in this movie where no one is talking.

-Luke is so dreamy. I don’t care what anyone says!!

-Don’t pass R2 up so easily Uncle Ben! Rude!

-Damn you and your Tosche station, Luke!!!

-A chip off the old whiney block there, Luke! And you don’t even know it!

-Really convenient for for 3PO and R2 that the Red R2 unit has a bad motivator. A little too convenient if you ask me!

-“Thank the Maker.” So…you’re basically saying “Thank Darth Vader.” Is that what you’re trying to say, 3PO? Is it?

-Mark Hamill is such a baby face in this movie.

-“And not very good at telling stories.” Oh just wait 3Po. You will be…you will be.

-What an interesting character arc for 3PO who starts off so scared of everything and “not good at telling stories” cut to the Ewok village where he is worshipped as a god and is telling the Ewoks of the adventures he’s had!

-“Who is she? She’s beautiful!” DUDE!! She’s your sister!!!

-Why doesn’t 3PO know who Leia is? Haven’t 3PO and R2 been counterparts since Episode III? And the ease at which Leia puts the vital information in that R2 unit suggests she’s comfortable with him and knows him. And if that’s the case, wouldn’t she know 3PO too.

-Blue Milk! The breakfast of champions.

-Uncle Ben really handles Luke poorly.

-It’s really saying something that Owen and Beru took Luke in. There is no blood relation there, but they did it anyways. Good people!

-“Luke’s just not a farmer, Owen. He has too much of his father in him.” Obviously Beru and Owen know something about Anakin, but what is the extent of their knowledge about him? What did Obi-Wan tell them?

-They really killed that hovercraft tech, proving that they didn’t need that fancy CGI to make a believable world!

-Sand People don’t play around! But also Sand People is not politically correct, is it! Don’t we say Tusken Raiders, Ben? Set a good example Obi-Wan!

-Oh look…it’s old Ben Kenobi. No relation to Obi-Wan. That would be ridiculous!

-Why in the world would Obi-Wan change only his first name? Doesn’t he know that they list by last name in the Galactic Yellow Pages?

-Poor 3PO really gets the brunt. He always seems to need putting back together.

-Once a Jedi Knight, always a Jedi Knight!

-“Last time I saw your father…I left him burning to death on the bank of a lava pit with no legs or arm…”

-Obi-Wan tells Luke the lie about Vader killing his father, but I guess he kind of has to to continue to keep Luke safe. If Luke found out the truth right then he might go after Vader far too early. Alternatively, but roping Luke into the Rebellion, Obi-Wan all but ensures that Luke will  find out the truth and face Vader.

-It’s funny how much power Tarkin has over Vader. The Empire clearly has no respect for the Dark Lord of the Sith. Even thought the entire Empire is run by a Dark Lord of the Sith.

-Poor Owen and Beru. They really get the shaft. And all for doing a good deed and taking an orphan.

-I guess all the push Luke needed was the death of his aunt and uncle.

-Worst Dad Ever!!! Don’t torture your daughter, Ani! Don’t do it!

-Mos Eisley is clearly no the most wretched hive of scum and villainy. Obi-Wan has been to Geonosis where there are actual hives.

-Hahaha sucker. Those were totally the droids you were looking for!

-The Cantina is filled with the craziest creatures, but sure…no droids. That makes sense.

-No one bats a freaking eyelash when Obi-Wan whips out his lightsaber and slashes off arms like a boss. And yet the Jedi are supposedly extinct. Shouldn’t that have created more of a scene than it did?
image

-Hubba hubba Han Solo!

-Obligatory Han shot first comment!

-Tarkin is a major league bad ass! There should have been a lot more Tarkin (for more Tarkin go read Tarkin by) He’s one crazy mofo! He’s like… I blew up a whole planet, bitches. What now!

-The saddest part about Alderaan blowing up is no more Bail Organa.

-This Jabba scene grates the nerves! Again begging the question…was George high when he remastered his masterpiece?

-Don’t look a gift ship in the mouth, Luke.

-I love Han and Luke’s bromance. Their scenes together are so great. They go from smuggler and annoying side kick to friends to brothers in arms and incidentally brothers in law! 😉
image

-Leia is such  bad ass!! I love that this movie was made in the late 70’s and the time period didn’t necessarily lend itself to such a kick ass female role. But here she is… mad respect!

-Never play Sabaac with a Wookie.

-The Force controls your actions and also obeys your commands.

-That’s no moon, Han!

-Why isn’t anyone listening to the Jedi Knight in the back seat?

-It’s funny that at this point in history there is no respect for either the Jedi or the Sith. All Force sensitivity is dismissed because of the events of the past. The winners get to write the history books.

-I think Luke’s whininess only adds support to his character arc in the end. He grows so much between Hope and Jedi.

-“A presence I have not felt since…”Since I was lying on a lava bank burning to death with no legs or arm…or eyebrows.

-“Who’s more foolish? The fool or the fool who follows him?” Obi-Wan just keeps throwing those truth bombs!

-Have you ever just stopped to look at how large Alec’s ears are?

-I love how protective Luke is of Ben. Even having not known him for very long. Luke, like Anakin, was just so hungry for a father figure he latched on the first one that came along. Uncle Ben withstanding. Good thing it was Ben that came along and not the Emperor!

-Definitely learned from Star Wars that arguments make the best start to any epic love story. In other unrelated news…this is why I’m single!

-Garbage chute!

-Chewie isn’t even having any of it!

-Imagine someone coming into your life the way Luke comes into Leia’s life and it being your long lost twin brother that you didn’t even know you had!

-Stormtrooper hits his head coming into the room where 3PO and R2 are hiding. Rewind and watch it again!

-3PO is so stupid sometimes. Turn the com link on dummy!

-“Listen. I don’t know who you are or where you came from. But from now on you do what I tell you.” Leia is so BOSS!!!

-It’s funny that Luke comes into save Leia because she is definitely the more war weathered of the two. She really only needed Luke to open the door and Han to give her a lift. The rest she did on her own.

-Showdown at the Death Star Corral!

-Obi vs Vader. The epic rematch.

-Funny that they call him Darth for short when Vader is the part that’s unique to him.

-I think Obi-Wan could have stuck around a little longer. I guess I understand letting go to become one with the Force and everything.

-I can just hear Tarkin maniacally laughing. He must have had a great “Muahahahaha”

-“Still. She’s got a lotta spirit. I don’t know…you think a Princess and a guy like me.” YEP!

-Leia handles her emotions like a boss too. Never taking a beat to mourn the loss of her entire planet. She’s all “we have no time for sorrows, Commander.”

-“The Empire doesn’t consider a small, one-manned fighter a threat.” IDIOTS!

-He calls her Leah…it’s clearly Leia. And you can tell that to your buddy Lando too!

-Come on, Han. Just take a look around.

-Han can’t even say “May the Force be with you” without smirking.

-Awwww… i love this scene with Biggs. It really adds gravity to Luke’s backstory and life on Tatooine.

-“They’ll never stop us!” Oh, Biggs!

-Must be hard to date when you have a Rebellion to run!

-Tarkin’s staring game is very strong.

-Do you think Vader/Anakin sensed the fate of the Death Star? He is sensitive to premonitions. And I wonder what other premonitions he’s had over the years.

-“Negative, it didn’t go in.” Ummmm…that’s what she said!

-I love that Wedge is with them till the end.

-And that R2 is flying with Luke just as Anakin always flew with him. The mirrored imagery is strong and beautiful.

-Luke’s affection for R2 also mirrors Anakin’s. It’s sadly beautiful.
image

-I love how concerned 3PO is for R2. As annoying as he is sometimes. He really cares about that little droid!

-Falcon to the rescue!

-Buh-bye Tarkin, you cocky bastard.

-The trinity together. Just makes me so ready for The Force Awakens and to find out what’s gone on since then!

-Looking good Princess!

-Luke looks so cute in his yellow bomber jacket. But he really needs o stop making eyes at his sister.

-Shiny R2!

-Chewie is robbed.
image

-But no one seems to care and the ending is wonderful and happy and triumphant!!!

Sci-Fi Debate Club

If you’ve seen this week’s episode of my web series, then you know about my Sci-Fi Debate Club. If you missed it, take a look…

We didn’t plan it. We didn’t mean for it to happen. But when two of more nerds are gathered together, nerdy…geeky…dorky debates are bound to ensue! And yes… they can get rather heated at times. We nerds are passionate about our fandoms (to say the least.) But I think we can all agree that we are united in the way we love. We love with intensity. We love with all we have.

Here are some of the hottest debates (not all are science fiction related) in the nerd community…

#1 -Star Wars vs. Star Trek

8176b63fa786a294103875561d0e5c81
Photo from FuriousFanboys.com

Do you prefer a galaxy far, far away full of rebels and stormtroopers, blasters and lightsabers, the Dark side and the Light side. Or do you tend to lean towards the order of Starfleet. The uniforms, the space exploration, the strange new worlds and civilizations? Personally, I don’t like to choose. I grew up with both of them in my life from a very young age and have never known a time when there wasn’t something to look forward to in the world of one or both of them. That being said, Star Wars does hold an extra special place in my heart. I cried when I saw the newest trailer for The Force Awakens and none of the Star Trek’s have elicited quite that response. But I do love both world greatly.

#2 – Would sex with Superman kill Lois Lane?

337371b457684f7079d85065e4b416a6
Photo from io9

Gotta admit that I haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about this one. But I sorta think they’d find a way to make it work. Love will conquer all… even super powered nether regions.

#3 – Who’s the best Doctor?

3ced4464bc04ef6a8a1d3998554ff6f7

This is a case of…why choose? Although, if I really did have to pick between all of Doctors that have ever been, I’d definitely choose the tenth Doctor, played by the incomparable David Tennant. (I guess I chose after all!)

#4 – Mac vs. PC or Android

3d3971b8e1625c16a0a4efec2985d723

This is more of a geeky tech debate. But it’s one that is had often and can get heated. Mac people are loyal and unswayed in their devotion to the apple. I used to be unflinchingly Mac oriented. And when it comes to computers, my loyalty stands. Now when it comes to phones…different story. 4 years ago when I finally upgraded to a smart phone, I was ready to take my place in the iPhone community, but alas, T-mobile did not carry iPhones at the time and that is the service my family uses. So I was forced to join the world of Samsung instead… and I’ve never looked back.

#5 – Bale vs. Keaton

bc25dad4b03c5432441419be95becea8

What this boils down to is more of a best-Batman-ever-debate. Contenders: Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Kevin Conroy, Christian Bale & Ben Affleck (I guess we still have to wait and see about that last one.) I’m firmly in the Kevin Conroy camp. For those of you not in the know, Conroy voiced Batman on the beloved Batman: The Animated Series from the 90’s. The same series that hosted Mark Hamill’s icon voicing of the Joker (another popular debate among nerds: Best Joker ever.) Keaton comes in as a solid second for me (Batman Returns is one of my faves…I love Pfeiffer’s Catwoman!)

#6 – Marvel vs. DC

794950642aa9488951983515de9d60cc
Photo from Kweeper.com

This is an issue where I really don’t want to take a stand. I could argue passionately for both. Though Marvel’s immersive world is just so unique and impressive right now. I grew up on the Batman and Superman animated series. And Superman has long been my favorite superhero of all time. Now as for favorite superhero team, I love The Avengers and I also really love X-Men. But my favorite villain is Harley Quinn. My imaginary superhero boyfriend is Captain America. But my imaginary best friend is Catwoman. See… I’m all over the place. I dip my toe in both pools and I just don’t wanna choose…so I won’t!

#7 – Game of Thrones vs. Lord of the Rings

87dd0636db66f2768a905b239eebcea0

This is a no brainer for me. One is a pop culture phenomenon. The show that brought dragons to the mainstream audience. That’s an amazing feat, to be sure. But the other is a piece of classic literature. A set of beloved stories that a parent can pass down to their children. An epic tale of hope and fellowship. An author who inspired the other so much that he went and added R’s in his name for that very reason. Any other argument is made invalid by that fact alone. (mic dropped…Liz out!)

#8 – Pirates vs. Ninjas

d4dc7911d99b043f393b7a2da0bbb8e5
Photo from baconbag.com

Ok… we have to talk first about where and why and in what time period are these pirates fighting the ninjas. Are they allowed to bring their pistols to the sword fight?  Cause pirates fight dirty, while ninjas are all about tradition. Though my coworker just brought up a good point…the pirates would probably be inebriated for the fight. So there’s that.

#9 – Captain Kirk vs. Captain Picard

There is a greater debate along these lines, who’s the best Starfleet Captain of all? Are you a Kirk fan? A Picard follower? Is it Captain Sisko that really gets you? Perhaps Janeway is the lady captain for you? Or maybe….nope that’s it! (Sorry Scott Bakula… I love you, but Enterprise doesn’t count.) Personally I’m a Captain Picard girl. I was a child of the 80’s and a preteen of the 90’s. And my parents l-l-loved Star Trek: The Next Generation. We used to watch it together all the time. So there’s a great deal of nostalgia and warm fuzzies attached to Jean-Luc. And while I really enjoy all the other Star Trek series as well and think they have stellar captains at the helm, it’s Picard for me!

#10 – Did Han shoot first?

This one is less a debate and more of a sore spot for hardcore fans of Star Wars. See… here’s the story. Star Wars was released in 1977. Beautiful, iconic, practically perfect in every way! 20 years later, George Lucas remastered his masterpiece to include some new things. Including, but not limited to, the scene between Greedo and Han Solo in the Mos Eisley cantina. In the original, untainted version of Star Wars, Han shoots Greedo, killing him and thus ending their conversation. This gave Han a cold-blooded killer persona. One that the Maker did not intend for Han. So when the remastered editions came out, George took the chance to set the record straight and added CGI footage of Greedo shooting first, missing and then Han shooting and killing him afterwards. Fans were unhappy, to say the least (the very least.) In actuality, fans were pissed!! 20 years of believing something about their beloved hero only to have it changed? This isn’t the only thing about the remastered versions that would upset the fans. But George Lucas maintains that Greedo shot first, while fans insist the opposite. Han Solo himself (Harrison Ford) was asked about this nerd debate in a 2014 Reddit conversation. His response…”I don’t know and I don’t care.”

At the end of the day, we all love and love hard. So what are your thoughts on these very important and pressing issues in the world of nerdy things? Let me know in the comments below!! Even if we disagree, I still love to hear about it!

8 Months Till Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Yes, the waiting is getting harder and harder. Especially with the new trailer out this week. Which, if you haven’t seen yet, must mean you are living in a cave on a desert planet far, far away. For those of us who aren’t a crazy, old man, take another look:

Yeah, so patience isn’t exactly my strong suit. But I’m trying really hard to bask in the pre-Force Awakens world of Star Wars. There are so many wonderful stories to read and watch in the waiting. So while I’m working on my patience, I will be doing these things.

Star Wars Digital

The_Complete_Saga_RE_RENDERED_by_LifeJuiceSFF

Show of hands, who will be purchasing both Star Wars trilogies on a digital platform regardless of whether or not you own DVD versions of the films. Count me it. Not only is this the most everlasting version of Star Wars available to us, there are also brand new behind the seasons featurettes available. And if you are anything like me, you consume new Star Wars information like a ream of frozen Thin Mints.

Star Wars Expanded Universe: Legends

thrawn_trilogy

By now we all know that the entire Expanded Universe has been relegated to Star Wars Legends to make room for all the new stories as well as the story line of the new films, but that doesn’t diminish the amazing work of all the authors who penned the Legends. Like Timothy Zahn and James Luceno and Drew Karpyshyn and John Jackson Miller and many, many more. So in the ether of the waiting zone I will be diving head first into the Expanded Universe starting with Timothy Zahn’s epic Thrawn Trilogy! And hopefully getting through as many as I can. Because after December I will be focusing on…

New Star Wars Expanded Universe

20140426-021001

All of the new novels that are now considered canon. Not to say I won’t return to the Legends, because, as I said, they are amazing stories that deserve to be read. But I want to fully immerse in what Lucasfilm and the Disney overlords are considering part of the official Star Wars Universe. There are many new titles coming out not only this year, but in the works in order to start making use of the word Expanded. Right now the timeline is a little thin, especially given how long the previous Legends timeline is. But if I start soon, then I won’t be as behind as I am with Legends. So there’s no time like the present. The only current canon novel I’ve read so far is A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller. Which leads me to…

Star Wars Rebels

star-wars-rebels

The explosive Disney XD cartoon that is not just for kids takes place in the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. It is a great way to stay connected to the Star Wars Universe in the space between big budget films and the story being told is very strong! If you don’t want to watch week to week, go ahead and start with…

Star Wars Clone Wars

Star-Wars-The-Clone-Wars

If you don’t like to wait for new episodes to come out, then Clone Wars is what you want. This is what I’m currently watching. And as sad as it is when a great show ends, I love being able to just power through and fully immerse in the experience of a show. And Clone Wars is truly a wonderful show. The Cartoon Network series takes place, obviously, during the Clone Wars in the space between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. It does an amazing job of bridging that gap, not only by giving us actual stories from the legendary Clone Wars, but also in Anakin’s decent and temptation towards the Dark Side of the Force. Something believed to be missing from Revenge of the Sith for avid Star Wars fans. Clone Wars boasts of strong villains like Asajj Ventress and Savage Opress, new heroes like the young padawan Ahsoka Tano and Captain Rex as well as all the characters we love from the prequels, Obi-Wan, Anakin, C3PO, R2D2, Padme.

Star Wars Comics

Marvel

Star Wars comics are returning home to Marvel Entertainment. From 1977-1987, Marvel held the property. Dark Horse got a hold of them after Marvel and they have been responsible for all the modern Star Wars comics that we know and love. But this is the year that Star Wars returns to Marvel, where it always belonged (not to belittle the amazing work Dark Horse did for the comic universe.) With Disney owning both Marvel and Star Wars, it makes sense to keep it all in the family. Now, all the comics coming out of this Mavel/ Star Wars partnership are considered current canon so this blurb could technically belong in the New Expanded Universe column. But comic books are an entity in and of themselves. I love comic books, but have a hard time keeping up with weekly serials. I tend to gravitate towards books or graphic novels. But if comics are your thing or you want to expand your knowledge of the SWEU, then you should start with Lando #1 which hits the racks in July.

There you go. Plenty of Star Warsian things to do while we eagerly (and patiently) wait for December to roll around.

What will you be doing while you’re waiting?
