Day 24: GLOW

This is one of my new favorite shows from Netflix this year. A show about the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, set in the 80’s (my favorite era!) If you haven’t seen this show yet, you should.

I didn’t chose a specific character to cosplay, I sort of did an homage to the whole genre. But I think the character I most resemble today is Betty Gilpin’s Debbie. If that doesn’t mean anything to you, it’s cause you didn’t take my advice yet and haven’t seen the show…what are you waiting for? Go watch it, I’ll wait!

Binge-Watching (aka Just When I Thought I Was Out They Pull Me Back In)

Just when I thought I was out. They pull me back in gif. Godfather. TV binge watching blog post

Has this ever happened to you? You innocently start a new show. Maybe someone made a suggestion and it sounded interesting, so you follow the thread to see where it takes you. Once you hit the point of no return, which depending on the show can be anywhere from episode 1 (LOST) to episode 4 or 5 (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), there’s no going back. With each new episode you dig a deeper hole that you cannot crawl out of. After the end of each subsequent episode you think to yourself, “this will be the last one for tonight. After all, I have to work tomorrow.”

Next thing you know, you’re calling in sick to work because, in your heart, you do you feel a little under the weather, come to think of it. Perhaps you’ve hit a cliff hanger and you can’t possibly be expected to put your big girl/boy pants on and adult today. What if she leaves and never finds out he loves her? What if he’s really dead? What if the whole town really did explode in that fiery ball of destruction?

So you settle in for a sick day…come to find out there are 10 seasons of this show. It’s gonna take a lot more than one measly, little sick day to get you through all the plots your eyes are waiting to behold. But then…a light at the end of the tunnel. A stopping point. A gentle lull in the storyline. It’s not that the show has gotten boring, it just allows you to breathe for a moment. You push stop, go to the bathroom, throw some water on your face and remind yourself that you don’t live in Sunnydale and you aren’t facing an apocalypse. The world is ok and you aren’t President Jeb Bartlett or Jack Bauer. It’s perfectly alright for you to go ahead and live your life outside of the TV screen.

Maybe you grab a snack and think about something else for a minute, maybe you even make it all the way outside where the sun is still shining and the birds don’t even have Netflix.

Then it hits you, that familiar feeling of longing for more, more, more, next, next, next. You look back and forth between nature beckoning you to choose the light and the dark cave that has become your TV watching space. The characters call to you. The darkness calls to you. And just when you thought you were out…they pull you back in.

Farewell world, God knows when we shall meet again. Perhaps there will be another lull in season 8.

Now What Do You Do?

If you haven’t yet seen Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, then I’d venture to say it’s only a matter of time till you do.

X-Wings Star Wars The Force Awakens recap blog

The biggest pop culture event of all time…even the Muggles want to be a part of this. There’s a lot of new people discovering the wonderful world of Star Wars. Maybe they just never devoted the time to watch all 6 movies before (or 3 if you’re a purist.) Maybe they thought it was kid’s stuff, but now are discovering the truth.

Inevitably they’re gonna reach a point where they’re going to wonder…”Now what?” It always happens after the excitement and fervor of a new movie dies down. It happens to me after binge-watching a show or reading a great book series or watching a new Star Wars movie. It’s hard because all you (I) want to do is immerse in the fictional world you’ve (I’ve) just been a part of. It recently happened to me after watching 4 straight seasons of Scandal. It happened after reading Harry Potter, but nowhere has it hit as hard as with the Star Wars Universe.

So…you’ve seen Star Wars. You’re in what Amazon likes to call a #Showhole. But there’s good news. This is where the fun begins. This is when you can start to discover what we die hard fans have been doing to stay in touch with that galaxy far, far away for years.

It’s called the Expanded Universe and it’s marvelous!

Here’s what you’re gonna do…If you’ve been living in a cave and have just emerged after 12 long years and haven’t had time to take a shower and get yourself to the movie theater quite yet…then Step 1 is pretty clear.

Complete Star Wars Saga. Episode I - VI

And if you haven’t gone back and watched the 6 movies that came before then…actually scratch that other Step 1… this is Step 1.

Star Wars Rebels Disney XD

Next up is the television universe created by Cartoon Network and Disney XD in the form of Clone Wars (seasons 1-6 available on Netflix) and Rebels (season 1 available on Netflix, season 2 currently airing on Disney XD.)

New Expanded Universe Novels by Disney Story Group

After watching all that, go to your local book store and pick up the newest novels in the Expanded Universe: Dark Disciple, Lords of the Sith, Tarkin, A New Dawn, Heir to the Jedi, Aftermath, Lost Stars, etc. These novels start to build the world around what you know and have seen on screen. They fill in the blanks and flesh out the questions. They also allow supporting characters to have rich story lines.

Star Wars Comic Books by Marvel

After you’ve read all that, head to your local comic book store and dive into the Expanded Universe created by Marvel Comics. The comic runs for Star Wars, Lando, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Kanan… The best thing about all this material is that is fits together like one giant puzzle. Each component working with the rest. It’s very impressive!

If you’ve done all that and are still thirsty for more. Go see Episode VII 2 or 3 or 12 more times so you know the dialogue by heart and then…

Go deep or go home.

Star Wars Legends Expanded Universe Timothy Zahn

The Star Wars Universe goes beyond Disney cannon. But I warn you, this step is not for the faint of heart. It involves heart break, misery and long hours reading amazing stories that are now considered mere Legend in the Star Wars Universe.

You wanted more and here it is! Silver platter not included!

Revelation

Monday is easily one of my favorite nights of television. Between Supergirl and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, it’s a rich, lady-powered evening and if you aren’t watching either…well, you should be. But I had this horrifying discover about myself.

I was doing my Monday night thing, watching Supergirl, and I was tweeting along as I usually do…when I realized a great many tweets were devoted to who I ship Kara with.
Kara and Winn…should we call them #Winna or maybe #Kinn (both super lame by the way.)
Kara and James…a strong case could be made for #Karmes or #Jara.
image
I tweeted about love triangles and potential love interests.
Don’t get me wrong, I also tweeted about girl power and everything else magical about Supergirl. But these tweets about Kara’s love life…these got me thinking.

Especially since the same was true of my thoughts and tweets about Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s, Rebecca Bunch who is currently in a love triangle of her own. Will it be Greg, the adorable bar tender or her camp boyfriend, Josh Chan who wins Rebecca’s heart?
image
I was doing to Kara and Rebecca what every well-meaning friend or relative had ever done to me. I asked the dreaded question and I didn’t even do it on purpose.
“Aren’t you gonna settle down, ladies? Aren’t you gonna choose one of those handsome men to make you happy and get married and have babies with?”

Imagine my shock…my horror to discover myself pulling the same baloney on Kara and Rebecca that’s always been pulled on me.
Let me tell you, it doesn’t sit well. And it’s causing me to take a hard look.
image
I love shippers as much as the next nerd, but a heroine’s story is much more than who she falls in love with. Same goes for the men (because I spend plenty of time thinking about who the dudes will end up with too.) I’m going to work on how I view the character’s and their journey on their respective shows. If I care this much about their romantic lives…but spend no time on my own…well, I’m just gonna leave that one open.

TV is my Weakness

This comes as no surprise to faithful readers. I, Elizabeth Erice, have an addiction…to the television.
image

What can I say…I love my stories.

The Walking Dead, The Flash, The Mindy Project, The IT Crowd, The Vicar of Dibley, Agents of SHIELD, Roswell, Seinfeld, Friends, LOST, Revenge, Arrow, Sherlock, Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Battlestar Galactica, Game of Thrones, Modern Family, Buffy, Angel, Dark Angel, Daredevil, Dawson’s Creek, Doctor Who, Downton Abbey, Boy Meets World, Girl Meets World, Gilmore Girls, New Girl…the list goes on (shockingly enough.)

And the real trouble comes when I’m in the middle of a really good (and all consuming) binge session. Even if it’s a show I’ve seen plenty of times.

For example, last night I got caught up in a Gilmore Girls whirlwind. What with the thrilling news that GG is returning to us! I watched a couple episodes on TV and then realized the series was on Netflix. Next thing I know, it’s 3 o’clock in the morning, I’m midway through season 7 and I have a queasy feeling in my stomach because all the unresolved, dramatic television issues will have to wait till morning, because it was bedtime about 4 hours ago. So I go to bed, but can’t sleep because Luke and Lorelai are fighting. And I don’t like when they’re fighting. Why couldn’t I have started in on season 5, when they had just gotten together and life was good and my stomach wasn’t queasy it was filled with imaginary, TV butterflies (which I tell people I hate, but secretly…i think I like the butterflies. But only the imaginary kind, cause I’ve rarely felt them in real life about a real boy, so what do I know.)
image

And now this blog post is reading like an episode of Gilmore Girls. What with those long run on sentences and the fast talking retoric, that you need a pause button just to keep up with. But see…that’s how much I love TV shows. The best parts seep into my life. The best parts seem to stick around like fond memories that you look back on and smile about. No, those events didn’t happen to me, but for 7 long years I watched it unfold. And yes, I’m a grown woman capable of discerning fantasy from reality (more on that later.)

And what was I talking about again?
Oh…right! TV!
Well, I love it…what else needs to be said!
(wink)

30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 15

Day 15: Kimmy Gibbler from Full House

A couple months ago, the news broke that Netflix and John Stamos were working on a Full House spin off, Fuller House. Not only will Candace Cameron Bure’s, DJ Tanner be coming back to the small screen,  but her sister Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and of course, DJ’s best fried, the one and only Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barbara) will return as well. (Is anyone else as excited for this show as I am??)

image

The key to Kimmy Gibbler hair is stacked scrunchies and volume. If you have curly hair, let it run free. If you have straighter hair, tease that sucker till it stands on it’s own. Then stack those scrunchies on top of your head and bam… you are officially rocking the Kimmy Gibbler.

Lenten Discoveries

This past Sunday was Easter, which means Christ has Risen and Lent is over. It also means that I get to watch TV again! But while I’ve been without TV, I’ve made some lovely new discoveries and I thought I’d share them with you!

#1 – The Last Ship

logo

No, not the TNT TV show. The Broadway musical from Sting that sadly closed in January. But the soundtrack is so amazing. And it was Sting’s TED Talk that led me to the music. And it has been playing in my earballs since February. If you’ve never heard the music, do yourself a favor. The soundtrack is on Spotify, so go check it out. It’s magnificent! Also check out Sting’s TEDtalk!

#2 – Michael Esper

tn-500_lastshippartywm406978192908

Discovering The Last Ship led me to discover Michael Esper (American Idiot) and this You Tube video from the Today Show of the cast singing “When We Dance” (favorite song from the show). I think I watched it about 30 times over the course of a week. The music is captivating and the performances are stirring! The cast did a performance at 54 Below on March 2nd and I tried my best to get in to see it. But alas it was quite sold out.

Follow him, cause he is exceptional!

#3 – SoundCloud

download

I’ve had this app for a while, but never had the chance to fully investigate all the miraculous sounds available on it. So I took some time to explore SoundCloud and find some new music and artists that were interesting. Which led me to…

#4 – Kerrigan-Lowdermilk

KerriganLowdermilk2006-360x0-c-default

“One of the most celebrated writing teams of their generation, Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk blur the line between musical theater and pop music.” Definitely check out all of their music on YouTube and iTunes and Spotify. But specifically their song “Run Away with Me.” My new favorite song!!! There are a bunch of Broadway singers who have covered this at venues like 54 Below and Joe’s Pub and more. But the one who got me most was Jeremy’s Jordan’s version. Check it:

and if you’re in the mood for more Jeremy Jordan (who isn’t) don’t miss his version of “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” from the Broadway Loves Celine Dion show at 54 Below!!! If your heart doesn’t just burst with happiness, then you need to get that thing checked!

Follow them and everything they do cause they are so talented!!!

#5 – Matt Doyle

matt-doyle

Watching videos on YouTube is such a rabbit hole situation. One leads to the next, which leads to the next and pretty soon you end up somewhere completely different with no idea how you even got there. So, after discovering Kerrigan-Lowdermilk and watching every video available of Jeremy Jordan, I stumbled upon a video of Matt Doyle (Spring Awakening, The Book of Mormon, War Horse, Gossip Girl) singing “Run Away with Me” (aka, new favorite song.) And finding him… well that led to a whole new world of gorgeous sounds for my ears!! Like his cover of Adele’s “One and Only.”

Or any song from his EP “Daylight” but especially “Can’t Stay Here” (aka my other new favorite song!)

Go follow everything he does, cause he’s a nerd like us and he’s just delightful!!

#6 – Andrew Solomon’s TEDtalk

I watched a bunch of TEDtalks while off TV. They are always inspirational and always educational! But Andrew Solomon’s was also emotional and personal! It’s a longer talk, but so worth watching!! Check it:

Follow him, cause everyone should be supported!

Twitter: @Andrew_Solomon

There were many other things that I discovered while not watching TV. But these were the ones that really stuck with me through Lent. I love TV. I love my stories. But it’s important to switch it up every once in a while and discover some new things!!! I hope you enjoy!

Watch This Show!

I know. I know. You don’t need a new show. You already have 7 that you just can’t miss. (Or is that just me?) But allow me to present to you Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. If Downton Abbey and Sherlock had a sassy love child, it would be Miss Fisher.

Meet Miss Phryne Fisher. Sassy, lady detective with a penchant for doing what she wants, when she wants and damn the consequences or danger! She is a modern women living in the 1920’s in upper class Australia. And she is truly fabulous from her clothes to her sleek bob to her devil may care attitude regarding convention.

13917884aa21dd61ee7d9b818d334ddb

Then there’s the very handsome and gentlemanly, Detective Inspector Jack Robinson. Love interest of Phryne who is constantly getting in the way of all Jack’s investigations causing the sparks to fly between them! Jack is a righteous man who always upholds justice, except when Phryne comes around and ruins all his efforts!

d51ffe1ca2a437bf40951ae90026143d

1345da0a99ce393995f1683b5f67ff98

Next we have the adorable, budding romance between Phryne’s lady’s maid, Dot and Jack’s constable, Hugh. They are too precious for words. He’s a Protestant and she’s a devout Catholic. He’s a traditional man and she’s learning more and more about what it means to be a modern, independent woman. Which makes for adorable story!

f5295ea7b92749db112b7f8a62240300

The rest of the cast includes Cec and Bert, who are Phryne’s rough around the edges cabby’s who get the info from the rougher parts of town. Mr Butler who is Phryne’s butler, oddly enough. Aunt P is Phryne’s traditional high society Aunt who’s always shocked by Phryne’s shennanigans. Mac is Phryne’s lady doctor friend who throws convention to the dogs and helps Phryne when called upon. She also dresses in the most adorable pant suits. And finally Phryne’s ward, Jane. Taken in under Phryne’s roof along with Dot and any other young woman who may need some help.

b3cf8f13b766f0befe9b72bfd86d7a69

In conclusion, this show is awesome and with only 2 series available on Netflix right now, it’s an easy binge watch. Give it a try and I dare you not to fall in love with it!

Thanks to my like-minded coworker, Emma for the recommendation!
