Lenten Discoveries

This past Sunday was Easter, which means Christ has Risen and Lent is over. It also means that I get to watch TV again! But while I’ve been without TV, I’ve made some lovely new discoveries and I thought I’d share them with you!

#1 – The Last Ship

No, not the TNT TV show. The Broadway musical from Sting that sadly closed in January. But the soundtrack is so amazing. And it was Sting’s TED Talk that led me to the music. And it has been playing in my earballs since February. If you’ve never heard the music, do yourself a favor. The soundtrack is on Spotify, so go check it out. It’s magnificent! Also check out Sting’s TEDtalk!

#2 – Michael Esper

tn-500_lastshippartywm406978192908

Discovering The Last Ship led me to discover Michael Esper (American Idiot) and this You Tube video from the Today Show of the cast singing “When We Dance” (favorite song from the show). I think I watched it about 30 times over the course of a week. The music is captivating and the performances are stirring! The cast did a performance at 54 Below on March 2nd and I tried my best to get in to see it. But alas it was quite sold out.

Follow him, cause he is exceptional!

#3 – SoundCloud

I’ve had this app for a while, but never had the chance to fully investigate all the miraculous sounds available on it. So I took some time to explore SoundCloud and find some new music and artists that were interesting. Which led me to…

#4 – Kerrigan-Lowdermilk

KerriganLowdermilk2006-360x0-c-default

“One of the most celebrated writing teams of their generation, Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk blur the line between musical theater and pop music.” Definitely check out all of their music on YouTube and iTunes and Spotify. But specifically their song “Run Away with Me.” My new favorite song!!! There are a bunch of Broadway singers who have covered this at venues like 54 Below and Joe’s Pub and more. But the one who got me most was Jeremy’s Jordan’s version. Check it:

and if you’re in the mood for more Jeremy Jordan (who isn’t) don’t miss his version of “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” from the Broadway Loves Celine Dion show at 54 Below!!! If your heart doesn’t just burst with happiness, then you need to get that thing checked!

Follow them and everything they do cause they are so talented!!!

#5 – Matt Doyle

Watching videos on YouTube is such a rabbit hole situation. One leads to the next, which leads to the next and pretty soon you end up somewhere completely different with no idea how you even got there. So, after discovering Kerrigan-Lowdermilk and watching every video available of Jeremy Jordan, I stumbled upon a video of Matt Doyle (Spring Awakening, The Book of Mormon, War Horse, Gossip Girl) singing “Run Away with Me” (aka, new favorite song.) And finding him… well that led to a whole new world of gorgeous sounds for my ears!! Like his cover of Adele’s “One and Only.”

Or any song from his EP “Daylight” but especially “Can’t Stay Here” (aka my other new favorite song!)

Go follow everything he does, cause he’s a nerd like us and he’s just delightful!!

#6 – Andrew Solomon’s TEDtalk

I watched a bunch of TEDtalks while off TV. They are always inspirational and always educational! But Andrew Solomon’s was also emotional and personal! It’s a longer talk, but so worth watching!! Check it:

Follow him, cause everyone should be supported!

There were many other things that I discovered while not watching TV. But these were the ones that really stuck with me through Lent. I love TV. I love my stories. But it’s important to switch it up every once in a while and discover some new things!!! I hope you enjoy!

It’s That Time Again…

Today is Ash Wednesday. Which mean the beginning of the Lenten season. For the past 2 years, I have given up the hardest thing for me to give up… Television. And I see no reason to stop this year. When I’ve given up TV in the past, I have found myself more focused, more motivated, more productive. Not only in my regular daily life, but in my spiritual life as well (which.. of course.. is the whole point!) Giving up something you love for someone you love is a bit of a no brainer. And that’s what Lent is for me. Giving up TV for the one who gave his life for mine? Ask me for something hard, why don’t ya.

It may not be particularly hard, but it won’t be a cake walk by any means. Especially when TV is so good these days. Here are 10 reasons that I will miss TV for the next 40 days…

#1 – Downton Abbey

Oh Lady Grantham, I will miss you and your snappy one liners!

#2 – Arrow

Umm…I forgot what I was talking about!

#3 – Flash

Check out last Friday’s post (click here) about couples that I am shipping these days. #SnowBarry is definitely in there!

#4 – The Walking Dead

This one is pretty self explanatory! Daryl must live! There is no other option for him!

#5 – Agent Carter

b9a2dcbede4ac858e3e8b63cbe35cc55

This lady is kicking ass and taking names. She also got picked up for a second season, which is excellent news!!

#6 – Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

0248b8a4fd8842658bd3a7cb6b0de6c6

Shield has actually been on hiatus since the winter finale (which was a doozy.) But it is returning on March 3rd, which means I will miss out on the mid-season premier and will have to catch up on it first thing after Easter!!

#7 – Revenge

If I believed in guilty pleasures, then I would definitely consider this one of them.

#8 – The Mindy Project

a1f5824d792b463e5cd3363b057e3fe0

Week to week this show has been getting more and more adorable. And with the big Mindy/ Danny baby news, it promises to be even more interested in the days to come.

#9 – Hart of Dixie

be368f7b9aed668670a78383e2be71e6

Oh no… I forgot what I was talking about again!! Wonder why…

#10 – Netflix

netflix_200x200

Aside from the regularly scheduled program of day to day TV watching, there are the many treasure troves available on Netflix. Re-watching Arrested Development. Starting a new show like House of Cards. Watching movies whenever I want to. All that is going to have to wait till after the celebration of the resurrection of Christ Jesus, Lord and Savior… otherwise knows as Easter, of course!

Until Easter hits, I’m going to be very careful where I look. Spoilers are everywhere.

Reunited and It Feels So Good!

Lent has ended. Easter has come and Christ has risen!! (That’s really the most important part of the whole thing and life.)

But in other news… I can watch TV again!! YAY!

Game of Thrones Season 4 - 31st March, 2014! I can't wait ... I'm such a big fan..;)

Kicking off my TV binge sessions is Game of Thrones. There were only 2 episodes to power through and one new one to watch. So that was the best choice to begin with. What a way to welcome my brain back to television viewing. The Purple Wedding, twincest and cannibalism. Game of Thrones (slow clap) well done.

I’m not about to go through a whole recap cause this guy does a way better job. So if you haven’t watched it yet, go watch. And if you have go read this recap cause it just helps put all things in place. There are lots of characters to keep up with and lots of juicy stuff happening. Sometimes you need the cliff notes!! I know I do!

What was I thinking?

So, I decided to give up TV for Lent this year. I know, I know. You’re wondering if I can even do it, given my deep and abiding love for my stories. And yes it’s really hard. Here are 10 reasons why:

1. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  is just getting good!!!

Agents of SHIELD - TV Series

SHIELD is finally poised to be all we want it to be and more!!! With the introduction of Bill Paxton’s character, John Garrett and of course the appearance of Thor’s Lady Sif, it is starting to explore a deeper relationship with the Cinematic universe that Marvel has carefully created. And I think the payoff is going to be epic!!!

2. The Walking Dead is nearing it’s season ending which usually means big shocks.

Merle ~ The Walking Dead: Season 3, Episode 15 "This Sorrowful Life" - Behind the Scenes

The Walking Dead is one of my faves! It manages to shock, scare and warm my heart all in the span of an hour. A difficult feat, let me tell you. And as season 4 draws to a close you just know we’re in store for some seriously mind bending zombie thrills.

3. Game of Thrones is returning!

'Game of Thrones' season 4 main poster unveiled -- it's super threatening!

Need I say anything else about the much anticipated return of Game of Thrones? If you don’t know why it’ll be hard not to watch, then you may have come to the wrong place.

4. How I Met Your Mother is ending.

EZTV - Free Download How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Full Episodes

9 years of questions are about to be answered in the next few weeks. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I think The Mother is perfect for our little Teddy Mosby. She is adorable and sweet and a little nerdy and loves a crossword. The anticipation of meeting her paid off in a big way and I have complete faith that the writers won’t let us go without tearing at our heart strings before all is said and done.

5. REVENGE

Revenge (season 2)

Ok, I know this is not a particularly nerdy choice, but I freakin’ love this show!!! My friend forced the first 3 episodes on me a few months back and from then on I’ve been hooked. What plot will Emily cook up for the Graysons next? Who will get caught in the crossfire? Why is Jack the perfect human being??

6. Arrow is awesome.

OMG GUYS I AM HAVING A FANGIRL FEELS OVERLOAD WITH THIS NEW EPISODE I SCREAMED AT THE TV LIKE FIFTY TIMES TONIGHT AND I ALSO CRIED AND MY SHIP MY ACTUALLY BECOME REALISTIC AND SO MUCH SHIT HAPPENED ITS LIKE ALL MY FEELINGS HAVE BEEN THROWN ONTO A TRAMPOLINE AND I AM WATCHING THEM EXPLODE ON VIVID COLOURS AROUND ME HOLY SHIT GUYS THIS IS NO TIME FOR COMMAS!!!

Arrow has been turning up the heat week after week. From the introduction of Barry Allen’s The Flash to the developments in Roy’s character with his injection of the Mirakura and subsequent induction into the cool kids club! With a Flash spin-off in the works, this show is primed to be the perfect vehicle to premier other beloved members of The Justice League. (Just imagine if the new Fox pilot, Gotham, was going to air on the CW instead. The possibilities would be endless!) Regardless, this show does not disappoint.

7. This House of Cards obsession.

Started watching this show this past weekend & I LOVE it! ....House of Cards

I’m always on the lookout for a new show to dive into. And roughly 13 people have suggested I watch House of Cards. And now that I can’t… I really want to!!! Good thing it will be safely on Netflix waiting for my eyeballs after Easter!!

8. Frasier rewatch.

'Frasier'Not only did "Frasier" reap the most Emmys (37) of any series ever, but during its 11-season run won Best Comedy Series a record five times.

Scratch your head in confusion if you need to, but I was deep into a Frasier marathon when Lent hit. Season 8 deep. I mean… Niles and Daphne had finally declared their love for each other after 7 agonizing seasons of Niles’ adorable puppy dog longing. I used to watch this show long ago at the feet of mom and dad, but never understood it back then. It’s so high brow, no 6 year old could possibly understand. But this show stands the test of time and is really, really funny. Sure, radio shows are becoming a thing of the past but this show isn’t. If you haven’t given up TV for Lent, try watching it. I dare you not to laugh. Or to fall a little in love with David Hyde Pierce. It can’t be done!!!

9. My funny bone needs tickling.

                                                          New girl!

The Mindy Project - Season 2

Download+Modern+Family+Season+4,+Episode+11+-+New+Years+Eve.jpg (550×550)   The Middle - Still not convinced the screenwriters aren't camped outside my house and getting all their ideas from my life. Honestly, this show hits the nail on the head every. Single. Time.

I love comedies!!! Anything that makes me laugh is a good thing in my book. And these 4 comedies always get me going. New Girl, The Mindy Project, Modern Family and The Middle. Laughter is the best medicine and these shows are my doctors!!

10. Once Upon a Time just came back.

Photos - Once Upon a Time - Season 3 - Posters and Wallpapers - Once Upon a Time - Season 3 - New Promotional Poster - 26th Feb 2014

Oh man. This one stings. Especially since the events leading up to the winter hiatus were so dang exciting and mystifying!!! And plus… The Wicked Witch is on her way. Which mean Oz!!!! Seriously. This show had a period of episodes that were pretty missable, until it wasn’t missable anymore. (If you watch, you know what I’m talking about.)

Let me just warn you, readers… spoilers will not be tolerated. I’m basically entering a TV-less bubble. And I’m going to have to work hard not to have one or all of these shows spoiled for me. So help me out!! Don’t spoil!!!!!

With so many compelling reasons to tune in, the obvious question is “why give it up?” Well the tiny little reason of Jesus Christ. If He can give up His life for me, then I can give up the many programs that zap my brain cells! And every time I think to myself… “OMG, I need to know what’s happening with Emily and Aiden.” or “What happens after Danny and Mindy kiss???? (brain explosion)” or “Is Roy Harper the Red Arrow?” … I’ll turn my eyes to heaven and remember why I have all the wonderful things I love about this life on earth. And that will be enough for me!!

Let me know if you’ve decided to give something up for Lent and if it’s TV, what shows are you missing???
