Have of the Elsa Week movie list is ice cold, the other half is filled with the warmth of sisterhood. Enjoy!

Frozen

frozen-2-elsa-anna-1.jpg

Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start. Frozen is the story of two sisters…best friends, really. Who are ripped apart by poor parenting, sorry to speak ill of the dead. But when Elsa’s powers become too powerful and she injures little sister Anna, their parents take them to see the mysterious and unexplained rock trolls who hold all the secrets to Elsa’s powers without ever actually giving explanations. So Elsa is made to feel ashamed of her gifts and is told to conceal and not to feel (bad advice for a super powered little girl, if we’re honest!) Years later, Elsa’s powers manifest at her Queenly coronation after years of seclusion. Is it any wonder that basically being a recluse wouldn’t lead to extraordinary people skills? Don’t worry, it has a happy ending, you just have to cry a lot to get there. “Do you wanna build a snowman?”

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

2013-10-01-chronicles_of_narnia.jpg

Speaking of frozen tundras, let’s look to Narnia. That magical land that can be found in a wardrobe. I’m specifically putting Lion, Witch and Wardrobe on the list, as this is where the tale of Narnia begins, as far as the silver screen is concerned. After years of eternal winter, Lucy Pevensie makes her way into Narnia, after choosing a particularly deep wardrobe to hide in during a game of hide and seek with her siblings. Long story short, the Pevensie children all make their way to Narnia and break the curse of endless winter. There’s a lion and spiritual metaphors and it’s a beautiful story that pairs well with Frozen.

Rise of the Guardians

rise-of-the-guardians-header.png

If you’ve never seen Rise of the Guardians, do yourself a favor and watch it. The Guardians are Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and the Sandman. When the world is threatened by Pitch Black, the Guardians will enlist Jack Frost to help put things back to right. Also a bonus reason to watch this movie, a lot of Elsa fans out there seriously ship her with Jack Frost and I really dig that ship. Watch the movie and judge for yourself if Jack would be a good match for the Queen of Frozen!

Dr. Zhivago

drzhivago-icehallway.jpg

Ok, this one is off the beaten path of what’s on the list before it. A bonafide tragedy, Dr. Zhivago really only shares a world of ice in common with Frozen. But if we’re looking for things that give you that frosty air, this is a movie that will make you feel those Frozen vibes for sure!

White Christmas

white-christmas.jpg

White Christmas, a classic Irving Berlin flick that should be watched every Christmas. This movie features cold, white stuff and a pair of adorable singing sisters with a penchant for the occasional disagreement.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

sub-buzz-11478-1468161146-9.jpg

Moving away from the snow and ice, we head towards those sister vibes with the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. The story of 4 best friends going through life together. As life events pop up for each of them, they fight like hell to keep the bonds of friendship and sisterhood alive by sharing a pair of pants that magically fit them all perfectly. And discover that even without the pants, their bond stands the test of time!

Invisible Sister

invisible-sister-trailer-rowan.png

This is an adorable little Disney Channel original movie starring Rowan Blanchard from the ill fated Girl Meets World. When Molly, Cleo’s way more popular older sister, turns invisible after a science experiment goes awry, Cleo starts to have more of an appreciation for her sister. And Molly sees her sister after years of overlooking her. It’s about sisters and it’s adorable!

Little Women

little-women-1_758_426_81_s_c1.jpg

One of the most classic tales of sisterhood in all of literature, I present Little Woman for the list. Yes, there’s tragedy (looking at you, Beth.) But that’s sort of a theme for a lot of the entries on this list. Chalk it up to the Disney effect (looking at you, parents of Elsa and Anna!)

Star Wars Rewatch (Episode I)

I’m not on a mission to convince you that the prequels are worth watching. I think that argument is ridiculous. We all have our feelings and opinions on the matter.
I personally like them. They are deeply entrenched in nostalgia from my high school and early college years and yes…there are bad patches, but when I sat in that theater in 1999 watching The Phantom Menace and in 2002 watching Attack of the Clones and in 2005 watching Revenge of the Sith, the last thing on my mind was how well they held up as part of the beloved Star Wars Universe, much less whether they had merit as movies in general.

2b32aacbf2d61211dde0b73a39003162

I love them. I still love them and no amount of vehement hatred or logical conclusions can convince me otherwise.
And likewise I’m sure my plucky optimism will do nothing to convince you they have worth and value and aren’t quite the evil incarnate that they have come to represent.

My beloved brothers and sisters in Star Wars fandom, let us cross party lines and hold hands together as we await The Force Awakens. Let’s band together, not bludgeon each other with the “I’m rights” and “you’re nots” that have become synonymous with loving Star Wars.

I am re-watching all of Star Wars in number order to prepare for the biggest of days. I prefer machete order, personally, but I think number order makes sense before watching Episode VII. Anyone who thinks otherwise is probably right as well (as it’s a choice not a commandment!)

Without further ado… here are 92 of my humble recollections, thoughts and feelings about Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace: (Best when read along with the movie.)

-Nute Gunray…no thank you!

-Anyone else shipping TC14 and C3PO… cause he needs a nice lady protocol droid.

-I remember hearing Obi-Wan say the classic line “I have a bad feeling about this” basically cemented it for me.

-I love Qui-Gonn so much.

-Battle droids have the funniest butts.

-That thing where Qui-Gonn puts his lightsaber through the door and makes a lava hole…so cool!

-Obi-Wan’s youthful exuberance is so infectious. He’s so eager to Jedi. And his smile reminds me of Anakin and Luke (in the happier time of course.)

-Com-mune-ications…nope!

-Queen Amidala’s wardrobe was my whole reason for life in high school. It’s why I chose to study fashion design in college.

eb04504c222c39972d9fb10c3e9e6549

-Oh, Captain Panaka. I always liked you! And definitely shipped him with Dorme in Attack of the Clones. Even supporting characters deserve a love story.

-Here comes Jar-Jar… you know what I thought was cool about Jar-Jar back in 1999 when I first saw TPM? I thought the behind the scene stuff with Ahmed Best was so cool. His screen capture work was so neat and really got overlooked in the aftermath of the Jar-Jar hatred.

-I really like saying “okie-day.” I’m gonna start saying it a lot more!

-Gungan City is beautiful and I’d like to book a night in a bubble room.

-Jar-Jar was clearly a fan of Full House’s Michelle Tanner…”How wude.”

-Jar-Jar involvement in the entire prequel trilogy is Qui-Gonn’s fault. Obi-Wan was all “leave him behind…we don’t have time.”

-The Bonga ship is cool.

-“There’s always a bigger fish!” I really love foreshadowing.

-Did we need two examples of “there’s always a bigger fish” though? Probably not.

-Obsessed with Amidala’s red dress with the glowing orb things.

-This movie began Kiera Knightley’s career. So we can thank it for that! You can never have enough women who vaguely resemble Natalie Portman.

72c7d075b19900e88b86060fc1d6c6f0

-Oh, hey, little droid…we know you!

-“We’re losing droids, fast.” Not all droids, Obi-Wan. Not all droids!

-I guess I wonder why Sidious isn’t Force Choking people left and right, Vader style?

-Tatooine must have a lot of money in it’s tourism  budget. There has to be billboards up in the galaxy “100 light years to Tatooine: Home of the bluest milk in the galaxy.” “30 light years from Tattoine: Home of the sexiest Twi’lek dancers.” Everyone goes to Tattoine!

-Awww little Jake Lloyd. It wasn’t your fault. Look how cute you were, you little mop head!

5e16e48256dc535b9572db1875590311

-“Oh yeah…totally not at all creepy  that I’m gonna marry you in the next movie, Padme. Not one bit!” -Anakin

-Hey R2, come meet your new best friend for the rest of your life.

-Hahahaha! R2 is a bit of a prude. “What do you mean…naked?”

-Unrequited ship… Qui-Gonn and Shmi! Dreaming of the whatifs.

-Padme is a little idealistic to not know there’s slavery in the galaxy. Isn’t that something a politician should know about?

-More foreshadowing about Qui-Gonn’s death. I really do like foreshadowing!

-I think one of the biggest mistakes the prequels made was to kill off Qui-Gonn in the first movie. He and Obi-Wan are the best ones.

668edaaf58cb0c3ca881f8163cfa2089

-I think Shmi’s accent is really sexy and can’t possibly come from Tatooine. Will go Google her entire history…

-“There was no father” That whole Midiclorian business is so unnecessary! Anakin could easily have been the chosen one with a father in the picture. It woulda worked. It’s sorta lazy to just nix the dad and call him chosen.

-Anakin had a whole bunch of Debbie Downer friends. Why does he hang out with them? Where’s his Biggs Darklighter?

-Qui-Gonn and Shmi could have been the forbidden Jedi romance we never had or rather the forbidden Jedi romance we deserved.

373f713506190efcd216672a7b4b6869

-In an alternate Star Wars timeline, Qui-Gonn defeats Darth Maul and goes back to marry Shmi and free her from slavery and becomes Anakin’s doting stepfather who loves him and helps Obi train him in the ways of the Force. And there is smiling and happiness!

-See, Qui-Gonn tried to save her! The feels!

-Jedi are cheaters! Misappropriation of Jedi powers. Not cool, Qui-Gonn. Not cool!

-“This is so wizard, Ani!” I’m definitely gonna start saying “wizard” and “okie-day”… get ready for it!

-Greg Proops! I love you from Whose Line…but Star Wars gives you street cred!

-Gardula the Hutt has breasts. Ewww. Put a gold bikini on those things.

-I LOVE pod racing.

-I was completely obsessed with that Aurra Sing sighting we get. I wanted to know everything about her!! It’s a travesty that they scraped her from the movies. A cool, lady bounty hunter? Sign me up! Thank goodness for The Clone Wars!

-Shout out to my Tusken Raiders!

-Poor Quadrinaro…he was just trying to support his family with a little pod racing.

-I wanted to be a pod racer so bad! And definitely had more than one Lego pod racing set! Pod racers make wicked cool Lego sets for sure.

9972b51905721f8a885997c36eb3f024

-Ooo-tee-dee!

-John Williams has a beautiful mind. And his music elevates this movie to places it couldn’t have gone without it. Duel of the Fates is still my jam to this day. And I really like Augie’s Municipal Band.

-This is the same as letting a 9 year old drag race. Very ill advised. What was everyone thinking?

-Poodu! (The sneakiest cursing in the galaxy.)

-Warrick Davis sighting!

-“You can’t stop the change, anymore than you can stop the sun from setting.” Dropping some serious wisdom, Shmi!

-“Thank the maker” takes on a whole new meaning after discovering who the maker is.

-No one writes musics like John Williams. NO ONE!

-I dig Darth Maul so much! Hes no Vader, of course. But he is a bad ass. When he flips off that speeder to fight Qui-Gonn…come on! Ray Park is a beast.

dcf24e99e5d939d4b420a356f9210ed3

-Qui-Gonn trying to teach Anakin patience…the most useless lesson he ever taught. Anakin was not listening.

-Obi-Wan…meet Anakin Skywalker. You will train him and love him like a brother and then cut off his arm and legs and leave him for dead…it’s a whole thing.

-Japor snippets are the new class rings or like getting pinned I guess.

-I love those sunset handmaiden outfits. Definitely wanted one when I was a kid.

-Queen Amidala rarely uses contractions. Is it more regal to say do no and can not and I am??

-Unrequited ship #2: Yoda and Yaddle. Let’s get those crazy kids together. Wait…only 2 of their kind that we ever see? They could be related. Never mind, this isn’t Game of Thrones!

-What exactly is a vergence? And is it different that a convergence? Is it only a Jedi thing?

-No one wants to see politicians in the Star Wars Universe unless its an evil dictatorship and the rebellion that will overthrow it.

949ef121fae80186dc304b0494e6b0b2

-Palpatine is one slippery snake and that is a strength of this movie.

-I loved this line when I watched back then and have had it memorized for years! “I was not elected to watch my people suffer and die while you discuss this invasion in a committee.”

-Wookies in the Senate! ET’s in the Senate! George Lucas in the Senate!!!

-They sure have beautiful sunsets in Coruscant.

-“How feel you?” Another phrase I’m gonna start saying all the time.

-“Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” Sometimes I forget this line came from the prequels. It is so widely quoted and absolutely dripping of Star Wars! Forget not!

-What Amidala should have said: “Leave the Gungan. Take the cannoli”

-“From your point of view.” See! Obi-Wan listens to his Master. And Qui-Gonn’s idioms become his own.

-Obi-Wan is the very best.

-Anakin: “I gave Japor snippets to the Queen?” (sunglass smiley face!)

-I really like her battle hair. (Saving that for a 30 Days of Nerdy Hair to come.)

e688d22a4a3712910ee797fc2744a192

-Those yellow Naboo starfighters. So cool looking.

5382d6b222318dfe0d3c43d69902d938.jpg

-Gungan vs Battle Droids is a fight I could care less about. But those Gungan shields!

-FAVORITE PART OF THE MOVIE!! DARTH MAUL appears! Duel of the Fates …2 bladed lightsaber…epic fight ensues!!

012b784b8916dfe6497710154bdc3c2b

-Just a room with bridges and no hand rails and now red laser doors? Who built this death trap palace?

-I always thought Padme’s blaster was so sleek! I had the mini keychain version.

-NOOOOOOOOO, NOT QUI-GONN!! Oh, you’re gonna get it now, Maul!

-Seriously, Ray Park! BEAST.

-Lady Naboo pilot alert.

-Battle Droid 1138. (Easter Egg alert)

-Darth Maul, you shoulda had more time to be evil. But (spoiler alert)I’m glad you got resurrected in The Clone Wars.

-Palpatine foreshadowing. You know how I feel about the foreshadowing!

-Qui-Gonn wanted balance to the Force which my father pointed out mean 2 Jedi and 2 Sith. Which is what eventually comes about after Vader kills the Jedi. Dad wonders why Qui-Gonn wanted to bring this balance. When there were so many Jedi and 2 Sith. Did he know the cost of balance?

-Obi and Ani together at last.

-Always 2 there are. No more, no less.

-Farewell, Qui-Gonn!

-History Lesson: In 1999, my brother bought the soundtrack before seeing the movie. And one of the tracks was named Qui-Gonn’s funeral. So we knew he was gonna die and that’s why we don’t buy soundtracks before seeing the films. No spoilers please!

-I love the ending. Augie’s Municipal Band and the big blue  ball of peace (which incidentally, looks a lot like their big blue ball of death.)

148658a0495138ba55b03669a044da8d.jpg

-I have always waited till the end of the credits and in TPM, we were rewarded with the sound of Vader breathing. We flipped our shit. It was so exciting and fueled the excitement for the next episode!

-(Side Note: I saw The Phantom Menace 11 times in the theaters.)

Marvel’s Shipyard

Today I’m examining relationships in the MCU. Watching Agents of Shield last week led me to the realization that there are very few functioning or healthy relationships over at Marvel.
Maybe it’s the superhero business…there’s hardly time for love much less relationship counseling. Has to be hard to find time for romance when you’re trying to save lives and save the world.
Let’s see who stands a chance of making their ship sail… (and see how many ship analogies I can possibly come up with!!)

1. Tony Stark and Pepper Potts (aka #Pepperony)
image
This is currently the strongest ship in the fleet. Tony and Pepper flirted in Iron Man, were together by the time Whiplash tried to take Tony out in IM2 and have survived not one but 3 other Marvel movies (Avengers, Iron Man 3 and Avengers: Age of Ultron.) It’s funny to think that the most narcissistic Avenger is the one in the healthiest relationship. Shows real growth! Good for you Tony (but we really mean Good for you, Pepper, cause we know who’s the Captain of this ship!)

2. Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter (aka #Huntingbird)
image
These two were on again/ off again all last season, but currently things seem to be on the rise for these two. Bobbi is back in the field and Hunter has let his vengeance against Ward for almost killing his ex-wife cool off a bit. It’s tough to find a happy ending in the line of duty, but these two are really making a go of it. Their chemistry is great and I can’t wait to see where this ship sails off to.

3. Hope Van Dyne and Scott Lang (aka #Scope)
image
Coming in third place would have to be the newcomers to the Marvel Universe. From Marvel’s Ant Man, I present Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne. This is a budding romance. So new that it hasn’t even made it through one full film yet. We’ll keep an eye on these two. But seeing as Hope already has title billing in the second Ant Man film aptly titled, Ant Man and the Wasp, chances are that come 2017, this ship will still be floating.

4. Daisy Johnson and Lincoln Campbell (aka #StaticQuake)
image
This ship is still on it’s maiden voyage. Having just met last season and surviving some pretty heavy stuff, Lincoln went on the lamb. But he’s back and already making out with our girl, Quake. Definitely a ship to keep an eye on. (Although, am I alone in dreaming of Grant Ward secretly being on the side of good and eventually getting back together with Daisy/Quake/Skye? I’m willing to eventually give up on the dream…but not just yet. Come on #SkyeWard)

5. Thor Odinson and Jane Foster (aka #Fosterson)
image
Talk about long distance relationships. These two don’t just have the pitfalls of a ‘normal’ couple, they have entire realms between them. They said goodbye at the end of the first Thor after a couple steamy kisses. Thor was far too busy fighting his brother in Avengers to visit his lady love. In Thor 2, the couple is reunited temporarily because of that pesky ether. But after returning Jane to Earth and heading back up to Aasgard, where he belongs (and returning for a quick, steamy kiss) they are parted again. While Thor does take time to brag on his girl in Avengers: Age of Ultron, I don’t see this ship surviving the long voyage. But hey, you never know. Long distance works for some people. Maybe Thor and Jane can make it.

6. Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter (aka #Steggy)
image
Get out your tissues. We all know how this one ends. This ship never had the chance to get out of the dock. Luckily Peggy goes on to have a kick ass career as a spy and Rogers…well, we know that Marvel is pushing Peggy’s granddaughter, as a potential future ship. But for now, Steve has new Avengers to train and old Avengers to war against.

7. Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff (aka #Brutasha)
image
This is one ship that has split the fanbase. In the comics both of these Avengers have very different love lives that don’t involve each other. Bruce was always destined for fellow scientist, Betty Ross (played by Liz Tyler in the Edward Norton film, The Incredible Hulk…but we won’t mention that one.) And Natasha had a couple ships in the comics including but not limited to Hawkeye, Daredevil and Captain America. So imagine everyone’s surprise when the MCU turns it all around and has Black Widow turning up the heat with Bruce in Avengers: Age of Ultron. A little flirting and a passionate kiss does not a solid ship build. But it gives us something to look out for in the future.

8. Jemma Simmons and Leo Fitz (aka #FitzSimmons)
image
Grab those tissues again, cause so far this is a ship that could rival the Titanic. At the end of season 2, Fitz and Simmons were on the verge of exploring their feelings for each other. Then along came the Kree Monolith that held a portal to another realm where a dark, handsome stranger and his arms were waiting for Simmons to cling to. (Not cool, Marvel. Not cool!) Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is currently in season 3. So the jury is still out on this ship. But given the givens, a happy ending is a long way off for these two.

9. Melinda May and Andrew Garner (aka #Meldrew)
image
Tissues…you may as well hang on to them. (Are you sensing a trend here?) After the events of season 2, the future looked bright for Andrew and May as they rode off into the sunset. But come season 3 and this couple is not living happily ever after either. Agent May is busy fighting bad guys and Andrew…well, he’s a little busy being a bad guy. I’m still keeping hope alive for these two.

10. Agent Colson and Rosalind Price (aka #Coulsalind)
image
I don’t know if anyone was really on board with this one. But I never was. Coulson is very special to the Marvel Universe and he deserves a lady love who is equally special. Rosalind does not fit the bill. Plus…after last week’s episode it seems like she may not be on the side of good after all. It’s only a matter of time before this ship runs a ground. (Thank goodness.)

Revelation

Monday is easily one of my favorite nights of television. Between Supergirl and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, it’s a rich, lady-powered evening and if you aren’t watching either…well, you should be. But I had this horrifying discover about myself.

I was doing my Monday night thing, watching Supergirl, and I was tweeting along as I usually do…when I realized a great many tweets were devoted to who I ship Kara with.
Kara and Winn…should we call them #Winna or maybe #Kinn (both super lame by the way.)
Kara and James…a strong case could be made for #Karmes or #Jara.
image
I tweeted about love triangles and potential love interests.
Don’t get me wrong, I also tweeted about girl power and everything else magical about Supergirl. But these tweets about Kara’s love life…these got me thinking.

Especially since the same was true of my thoughts and tweets about Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s, Rebecca Bunch who is currently in a love triangle of her own. Will it be Greg, the adorable bar tender or her camp boyfriend, Josh Chan who wins Rebecca’s heart?
image
I was doing to Kara and Rebecca what every well-meaning friend or relative had ever done to me. I asked the dreaded question and I didn’t even do it on purpose.
“Aren’t you gonna settle down, ladies? Aren’t you gonna choose one of those handsome men to make you happy and get married and have babies with?”

Imagine my shock…my horror to discover myself pulling the same baloney on Kara and Rebecca that’s always been pulled on me.
Let me tell you, it doesn’t sit well. And it’s causing me to take a hard look.
image
I love shippers as much as the next nerd, but a heroine’s story is much more than who she falls in love with. Same goes for the men (because I spend plenty of time thinking about who the dudes will end up with too.) I’m going to work on how I view the character’s and their journey on their respective shows. If I care this much about their romantic lives…but spend no time on my own…well, I’m just gonna leave that one open.

A Well Built Ship

I was watching an episode of Gilmore Girls (ok I watched 7) and I’ll admit, I had a momentary lapse. It was an episode from season 7, near the end of the show and Lorelai was married to Christopher.
I sent a hasty tweet that said:
“Ok, I l-l-love Luke and Lorelai,
but I coulda been very happy
with her and Christopher too.”

He’s always been a charming man, albeit a bit of a flake. And while I truly think he loved Lorelai and Rory, he just wasn’t good at that whole being a steady, stable family man thing. He was a hurricane. Plain and simple. And so is Lorelai, so in essence (and according to my theory) they could never have successfully and happily belonged together. Fast forward to season 7 and he is finally attempting the seeming impossible. Going house shopping, wooing the good townspeople of Star’s Hollow, playing dad to Rory and Gigi, but it never feels quite right…this domesticated version of Charming Christopher. And Lorelai isn’t happy…we know she isn’t.

image
In stark contrast, you have Luke Danes. Steadfast townie. If there is a man in Star’s Hollow who understands commitment, it is Luke. He owns his own diner (in the building his father owned.) He kept his father’s boat. He commits to help Jess, his sister’s son. He even committed hard core to that blue baseball cap that Lorelai gave him in season 1. He never leaves. Never abandons his post. He’s there at the diner every morning to get the Gilmore Girls their beloved cups of coffee till the very last episode.
image
*Print from LetsAllMakeBelieve Etsy shop

Is there trouble in paradise when Luke and Lorelai finally get together? You bet. It’s a good ship. And good ships are built to withstand the harsh conditions.
image
*Photo from Nautical Wheeler
Luke is thrown when he discovers that he has a daughter who he knew nothing about. Sure, that’s gonna shock a guy. Like I said, Luke’s problem isn’t commitment. But a case could be made for his shortcomings in the area of communication. Years of unrequited feelings…yeah, communicating wasn’t his strong suit.

Yes, Luke and Lorelai could have had a healthy, happy, ride-into-the-sunset ship. We all would have been very ok with that. But Luke lies about April and cuts Lorelai out of decisions and Lorelai sleeps with Christopher and then marries him. They both makes huge, hurtful mistakes.
In the end, they are a stronger ship for the mistakes they make, for the struggles they face.

Now as I’ve said before (click here) I’ve watched a lot of TV. I should go ahead and capitalize that because I truly means A LOT. And I think I’m gonna go on record and say that Luke and Lorelai’s relationship is one of the very best in television history.
image

They start as friends. Great friends. They are there for one another as relationship after relationship falls apart. And they get things wrong sometimes. It’s one of the most realistic television relationships of all time.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that the lesson here is “love conquers all.” It doesn’t always. Sometimes it can’t. But love reminds you of the good. Love forgives the wrongs and love fights like hell to survive no matter how much we try to kill it. (Just look at the divorce rate. And even the divorces of both Luke and Lorelai.)

I only hope that they are still experiencing those highs and lows together when the Gilmore Girls revival hits Netflix next year.
And I also hope that Rory finds or found someone who can live up to the father figure she had in Luke Danes.

It’s That Time Again…

Today is Ash Wednesday. Which mean the beginning of the Lenten season. For the past 2 years, I have given up the hardest thing for me to give up… Television. And I see no reason to stop this year. When I’ve given up TV in the past, I have found myself more focused, more motivated, more productive. Not only in my regular daily life, but in my spiritual life as well (which.. of course.. is the whole point!) Giving up something you love for someone you love is a bit of a no brainer. And that’s what Lent is for me. Giving up TV for the one who gave his life for mine? Ask me for something hard, why don’t ya.

It may not be particularly hard, but it won’t be a cake walk by any means. Especially when TV is so good these days. Here are 10 reasons that I will miss TV for the next 40 days…

#1 – Downton Abbey

bfd6b56413c15d209e5e3d4be5f9cd78

Oh Lady Grantham, I will miss you and your snappy one liners!

#2 – Arrow

de86acadb1e1d93f916678fbe7ab7f2b

Umm…I forgot what I was talking about!

#3 – Flash

8621c68e41cc9d6e46a11d97dfc92dd2

Check out last Friday’s post (click here) about couples that I am shipping these days. #SnowBarry is definitely in there!

#4 – The Walking Dead

2b5f0530131e98f4b6c1fb0c43b40082

This one is pretty self explanatory! Daryl must live! There is no other option for him!

#5 – Agent Carter

b9a2dcbede4ac858e3e8b63cbe35cc55

This lady is kicking ass and taking names. She also got picked up for a second season, which is excellent news!!

#6 – Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

0248b8a4fd8842658bd3a7cb6b0de6c6

Shield has actually been on hiatus since the winter finale (which was a doozy.) But it is returning on March 3rd, which means I will miss out on the mid-season premier and will have to catch up on it first thing after Easter!!

#7 – Revenge

9624369ece82e98f16e90c3341a19112

If I believed in guilty pleasures, then I would definitely consider this one of them.

#8 – The Mindy Project

a1f5824d792b463e5cd3363b057e3fe0

Week to week this show has been getting more and more adorable. And with the big Mindy/ Danny baby news, it promises to be even more interested in the days to come.

#9 – Hart of Dixie

be368f7b9aed668670a78383e2be71e6

Oh no… I forgot what I was talking about again!! Wonder why…

#10 – Netflix

netflix_200x200

Aside from the regularly scheduled program of day to day TV watching, there are the many treasure troves available on Netflix. Re-watching Arrested Development. Starting a new show like House of Cards. Watching movies whenever I want to. All that is going to have to wait till after the celebration of the resurrection of Christ Jesus, Lord and Savior… otherwise knows as Easter, of course!

Until Easter hits, I’m going to be very careful where I look. Spoilers are everywhere.

Fictional Couples I Ship

Yeah… I couldn’t just pick 5 couples. Because I don’t just watch 5 shows. And even if I did just watch 5 shows, there’s more that one couple per show sometimes. So I’m just gonna go ahead and pick as many as I want, breaking the 5 Fandom Friday rule, but it’s Valentine’s Eve/ Friday the 13th/ I-don’t-care-I’ll-do-what-I-want-day. But I think that The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick would approve!! Not only did I do a list of current couples that I’m shipping. I also went ahead and made a list of couples that I ship from shows that are no longer on the air. Click Here for that list (also couldn’t choose just 5 couples for that one either!) PS, spoilers ahead so tread lightly! You’ve been warned!

#1 – Brary from Downton Abbey

image

As of right now on the show, this has not even been hinted at, but I know I’m not the only one who dreams of the day when Lady Mary and Tom Branson just join forces to become a serious Downton Abbey power couple. And I think the late Lady Sybil and the late Matthew Crawley would approve of this union. Plus Tom and Mary are equally better than the people they have individually been courting or been courted by!

#2 – Captain Swan from Once Upon a Time

image

If anything happens to break Emma and Hook up, I will be boycotting Once Upon a Time. I have loved their story and they are such a great couple. She makes him a better man, he makes her a better woman. It’s everything a fictional relationship should be!!

#3 – Zade from Hart of Dixie

image

In the same vein as the Emma/ Hook union, if anything happens to break apart Zoe Hart and Wade Kinsella I will be boycotting! I love them together. Incidentally, they also make each other better people and with a baby on the way, they are truly becoming a wonderful and inspiring couple to watch!

#4 – Raylicity from Arrowimage

All you Olicity shippers out there are going to hate my life, but I don’t dig Ollie and Felicity together. I liked him with Laurel, before she lost her edge! And I loved him with Sara, before she lost her life. But Felicity… I’m just not feeling it. But there’s something so delightful about the growing tension of Raylicity!! And I ship them so hard!! So, sorry my lovely Olicity shippers, but Raylicity all the way!!

#5 – SkyeWard from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

image

Sure, he’s gone rogue and is working for the bad guys, but do we really believe that he’s gone bad? And do we really believe that his love for Skye can’t totally redeem him? We do not believe that! Not for one second. There is good in him… I can feel it!

#6 – Jemily from Revenge

image

Ok.. Revenge is killing me on the Jack and Emily front. Why, why, why would she even consider a relationship with Ben when good old Jack has been biding his time. When he walked up that hill to Ben’s house and saw them kissing… NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! After all this time. Here’s hoping they get things together before the end of the series.

#7 – JessNick from New Girl

image

Jess and Nick have certainly had their ups and downs. And I’m gonna go ahead and admit that I refused to watch their break up. REFUSED. Especially after THAT kiss and the fact that they belong together. They just do!! Sure, Ryan is adorable and a wonderful distraction till Nick gets his shiz together, but there is a serious expiration date on that relationship. And it’s because Nick and Jess belong together. They are like Ross and Rachel, like Toast and Butter, like Netflix and Mac and Cheese!! Meant…To…Be!

#8 – OutlawQueen from Once Upon a Time

image

HEARTBREAK! That’s how I felt at the end of the winter finale of Once Upon a Time. Rumpbelle and OutlawQueen both took a hit this season. But I can’t believe that Regina and Robin have seen their last steamy kiss. Magical town barrier or not! Keep hope alive for this couple, because the powers that be over at ABC know what we want!!

#9 – FitzSimmons from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

image

They are literally called FitzSimmons on the show. They belong together. Their names make up the perfect shipper name. Did I flirt with the idea of Trip and Simmons? Sure. But all along I knew that Fitz belonged with Simmons and Simmons with Fitz, plus Trip is dead now (RIP) so there’s no chance f0r Trimmons.

#10 – Caryl from the Walking Dead

image

This one is one that we have been waiting for for a long time! It’s been building and building and so far we only have cursory glances and that reunion that brought all Caryl shippers to tears! Why didn’t he kiss her then? WHY? I tell ya, AMC may just be the Kingpin of the will they won’t they at this point in the list.

#11 – Jacknye from Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries

wpid-screenshot_2015-02-13-10-25-22-1.png

I take it back. Detective Inspector Jack Robinson and Miss Phryne Fisher hold the title for biggest onscreen teases!! Chances are you haven’t seen this one as it’s a show that airs in Australia, but thanks to the magic that is Netflix, you can catch up on the two current seasons available. Season three is currently in production. Do yourself a favor and get on team Jacknye right now!!! It’s completely worth it.

#12 – Snowborn from Game of Thrones

image

This one may be a surprise for you. Seeing as they have had zero onscreen moments together. She’s off in Westeros raising dragons and conquering kingdoms. He’s over in Castle Black battling the impending doom of that winter that keeps on coming along with all the creepy threat of the White Walkers. But their paths are drawing closer together and the entire series is called A Song of Fire and Ice. Hello?? Fire-breathing dragons… huge wall of ice?? You do the math on that one.

#13 – SnowBarry from The Flash

image

And last but not least we have SnowBarry. Now the relationships on The Flash are tricky. If we’re talking comic book canon, everyone knows that Barry marries Iris. But is that the direction that The CW is going to take? Will WestAllen ever get it together? Personally I don’t ship Iris and Barry (sorry WestAllen shippers!) I also don’t ship Caitlin and Firestorm, though I know that according to comic book canon Caitlin is destined for the dark side. But I still loved the episode, Crazy For You where they grew closer and flirted with the idea of SnowBarry.

Shipping a couple doesn’t always mean that they will end up together. Much like real love and emotions, it’s not always rational. But the heart wants what it wants!! And I apologize for nothing! Every ship has it’s place.

To talk more about the couples we ship on this Valentine’s Eve, come on over to Twitter @nerdinthecity tonight for my #NerdySlumberParty where we will be talking all about that four-letter word, Love. The party starts at 9pm EST and there will be giveaways and nerd talk. You do not wanna miss it!!

5 Fandom Friday Classic

Fictional Couples I Ship (Classic)

So I had to go ahead and do a post about those couples that are no longer on television. These are from what one might affectionately refer to as the good old days. Before couples had mashed up names, before Twitter could save a show. Back when the CW was The WB. Back when you spent years and years watching the sexual tension get more and more tense, till it’s season 10 and that couple still isn’t together and all you want is a freaking happy ending (I’m looking at you, JAG!) These are the couples that came before the couples we ship today. And I couldn’t just choose 5. So I picked as many as I wanted! As always, thanks to The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick for the blog topics!! I also wrote about today’s couples… Click Here for that post.

Major spoilers ahead in this one, but since all of these shows are off the air, I’m just gonna go ahead and say, if you haven’t been spoiled by now, then don’t read on till you’ve watched all of these shows. Each ship is as magnificent as the one that follows!!

#1 – Harm and Mac from JAG

image

10 seasons. 10 seasons of sexual tension till this couple finally got together in the last episode… at the last possible moment. Against all odds and executive producer, Donald P. Bellisario’s campaign to keep the couple apart forever, they finally got together. But after 10 years it was basically to placate the fans, then again after all that time… why wouldn’t you?

#2 – Chandler and Monica from Friends

image

Sure Ross and Rachel are the obvious choice from Friends, but it’s Monica and Chandler that sneaks up on you and steals your heart completely. They start off as… well… Friends. And after that time in London, they start down a road to something so much more. And infinitely better than the Ross and Rachel will they/won’t they. Because there was never any won’t they. We knew they would and they never disappointed! And with Friends on Netflix now, we can all go back and relive the adorable romance of Mondler…Chandlica… Not sure what their shipper name would be these days.

#3 – Mulder and Scully  from The X-Files

image

This was another fictional relationship that was a long time coming. We knew they belonged together, they knew they belonged together. I’m not sure why it took them so dang long. Perhaps it was the impending doom of regular alien activity that seemed to leave romance at the door. But they found a way, even after David Duchovny left the show and it really should have been cancelled in his absence.

#4 – Dr. Mike and Sully from Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman

image

I loooove me some Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. This is a couple that did some serious dancing for a plenty of seasons. But they did get together and eventually have little Katie Elizabeth. Ultimately delivering the kiss of death (as it was know when a couple would get married on a TV show back then.) Once Sully and Michaela finally got it together and got married, everyone basically found no reason left to watch the show. Sure, Colleen had a love interest and there was that whole Dorothy and Cloud Dancing thing, but it was the long-haired, brooding Sully and the longer-haired, intrepid Michaela that really kept us invested in the show.

#5 – Everyone on all Star Treks

Captain Picard and Beverly Crusher from The Next Generation

6a329147ca9a10b29110b2f9b48b01b5

This one sadly had no big wedding payoff. Only the fleeting sense that they belonged together and they both knew it. Lovers came and lovers went, but these friends always remained in each others lives and that is something that transcends romance!

Commander Riker and Deanna Troi

add9aa68049d17f82bfbdde46eb41aa6

They had a little time of will they/ won’t they going on. She even dated Worf and he dated plenty of women who were not right for him. Sometimes you gotta kiss a lot of frogs. Am I right? But eventually in the movie Star Trek: Nemesis (arguably not the best of the Trek movies) these two finally tied the knot!

Lieutenant Worf and Jadzia Dax

d185b28347f681f78e37db6bf90df3b7

Sure, Worf and Deanna had a thing going back on the Enterprise for a short spell, but everyone knew that she belonged with Riker. Leaving Worf wide open to leave The Next Generation and find his lady love on Deep Space Nine. And find her he did!

Constable Odo and Major Kira

image

This relationship begins as so many of the best ones do, with utter loathing. Odo and Kira can’t stand each other at first. He’s a changeling, she’s Bajoran. Both have a job to do and find it best if everyone stays out of each other’s… oh wait, what’s that? They love each other now? Of course, they do!

Seven of Nine and Commander Chakotay

65e0c97312127260c2463279b5e6d81e

I love a good tale of opposites attract. Who would have thought, when Seven of Nine was ripped from the Borg collective that she and the spicy Maquis Commander Chakotay would fall truly, madly, deeply in love. The best ships are the ones you don’t see coming!

Tom Paris and B’elanna Torres

16c437f940d69388332b1cbd8d9809b1

That was not the case with these two. Another tempestuous pairing that was destined for true love. Of course they couldn’t stand each other in the beginning, they hadn’t reached that part when they are yelling at each other and realize the very fine line that exists between love and hate. But once they did it was beautiful to watch them fall. And eventually have a little half Klingon/ half human baby in a Delta Quadrant far, far away!!

#6  – Joey and Pacey from Dawson’s Creek

image

Sorry to you Dawson fans, but there is no way that our girl Joey Potter was ever going to end up with a sap like Dawson! Pacey was always the guy for her. We knew it back in high school when they first did it at on the ski trip and we knew it when they got stuck in the K-Mart together. She makes him wanna be a better man!

#7 – Max and Liz from Roswell

image

Roswell only had 3 seasons, but from episode 1, it was always Max and Liz. He saved her life. And not crazy pants Tess nor evil alien spawn or the Skins could separate them from that bond! As you can see from the picture above, it worked out in the end! Happily ever after ensued and I cry every time I watch that finale!

#8 – Lois and Clark from Smallville

image

After suffering through 4 years of Clark pining after stupid Lana, Lois finally came on the scene like a proper hurricane! And anyone who knows anything about anything at all knows that Lois and Clark are meant to be together! So, go ahead Lois, flirt with Oliver Queen. And feel free, Clark, to pine all you want after Lana.. but in the end it’s Lois and Clark and everyone knows it! This is a show that knows how to ship and didn’t wait 10 years for their characters to say I love you. They did, however, wait 10 years for them to say “I Do.” Can’t give all the good stuff away up front!

#9 – Niles and Daphne from Frasier

image

Poor Niles Crane. We watched him pine after Daphne from the minute she walked into his life. He was married, she was single. The she was engaged, and he was single. It took years for them to finally be on the same page. But once they worked it out and got together it was completely glorious!

#10 – Everyone on Lost

Jack and Kate

image

This was a big will they/ won’t they. Jack loved Kate. Then Kate slept with Sawyer. Sawyer loved Kate, but Kate loved Jack. Jack loved Juliet, but Juliet was potentially evil. Then Jack and Kate left the island, but then they needed to go back. Meanwhile back on the island…

Sawyer and Juliet

image

The island started hopping time, leaving Juliet and Sawyer to start their romance. And finally at the end of the day Jack ended up with Kate, Juliet ended up with Sawyer (up in that purgatory church thing) and all was right with the fictional world of Lost. Whew!

Jin and Sun

image

The union of Jin and Sun was never really up in the air. They started out married and lasted until their untimely demise. But don’t worry, they too met again in that church purgatory! What I loved most about Sun and Jin was Jin’s character development. He started out as a tight ass who never let Sun be Sun and ended up being one of my favorite characters on the show!

Charlie and Claire

image

Lost was a show that was constantly bringing the pain, but nothing was quite as painful as poor Charlie’s death on not-Penny’s boat. And in the finale when they panned the shot to a very happy Claire and Charlie, I defy you to have had a dry eye!! It was beautiful, it was moving, it was television at it’s most heart-warming!!

#11 – Buffy and Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer

b5fe28aef50e3ff36f6a499dc6278d0d

Plenty of people out there are Team Angel. He has his place and we love him, but there that’s whole unfortunate Angelus part of the package. So along came William the Bloody. Of course he was evil. All the best ones start out bad but then make that pivotal turn towards love. Spike spent season 5 pining for the Buffster. We knew she was too good for him. She was the slayer for Pete’s sake! But then she died and spent all that time dragging herself through the proverbial muck by lower her standards and getting busy with Spike. And there is that unfortunate scene in the bathroom, that I’ll never forgive him for, but he knew he was evil so he went to get his soul. And eventually gave his life for the Scoobies and their cause. He is my favorite and I love him!!!

#12 – Mal and Inara from Firefly

image

Any Firefly fan out there knows the deep, heart break that is the cancellation of this television gem. It sucked, it was depressing, it left us too soon. And Mal and Inara never had the chance to declare their love for each other. The signs were all there. And deep down they both knew the truth. But truth unspoken is just heresay. It’s a deep sadness we all keenly feel. But I think we can surmise that eventually these crazy kids said what they needed to say! One can hope!

#13 – The 10th Doctor and Rose from Doctor Who

4e80dbc3110487d82af90c1f384f8931

Oh Rose! So many people hate you, but I know you belong with the regenerated human version of the 10th Doctor via his severed hand. It’s a classic tale. Girl meets Chris Eccleston. Chris Eccleston becomes David Tennant. Everyone is ok with that. David Tennant leaves girl on a beach in an alternate reality. Girl spends all of her time trying to get back to real reality only to have David Tennant split into two David Tennant’s (hello nurse!) Classic! This one had a weirdly happy ending. She ended up with an inferior version of David Tennant. And a human, non-time traveling David Tennant is better than no David Tennant at all. Everyone knows that!

#14 – Steve and Miranda from Sex and the City

8e529836a236ae2466bf4bc7993bc428

Whenever you mention Sex and the City, most people bring up Carrie and Big or Carrie and Aiden or Carrie and whoever. But it’s Steve and Miranda who make it work and make it last. Sure there are some rough patches, but that’s what makes it so beautiful. They find their way back to each other even after all the bad! It’s a tale as old as time and worth watching over and over again.

I know it’s a long one, but honestly, this list could have been even longer. And it’s my list so I’ll write as much as I want to! 😉

I’m such an easy shipper. Throw a little tension my way and I’m all about THAT couple!! I get drawn in and I just have to binge-watch till everyone is happily married off. I’m the same way in real life. Perhaps I’m just waiting till everyone has a happy ending before I even think about finding mine.

Who do you ship!! Come on over to my Twitter party tonight at 9pm EST where we will be talking about love and shippers. Join in with the hashtag #NerdySlumberParty There will be giveaways and plenty of nerd talk! Virtually see you there!! @nerdinthecity
