Thrift Store Cosplay fashion blogger nerd post Instagram challengeDay 19: Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City

This should be no surprise to you…I’m a Carrie Bradshaw through and through. I’ve taken the Buzzfeed quiz, so I know it’s true! It’s the hair…the fashion sense…the love of shoes…the independent lifestyle. And while I haven’t been on the dating scene in quite a while, in the past…I was all about that bass. If you need a refresher course in my dating adventures, click here!

I’ve been on my fair share of dates, just like Carrie. I’ve kissed my fair share of guys, just like Carrie. And…well, that’s where the comparison in dating ends!!

One of the things I love about Carrie and can identify with her most is her single status, which lasts well into her 40’s in the show and the movie. And while she does eventually tie the knot with Mr. Big (another place we differ, cause I’m an Aiden girl) she spends plenty of time solo.

Me? I’m not looking for Mr. Big and I do enjoy being solo. That doesn’t mean there isn’t room for an Aiden or a Mr. Big or a Burger or a Petrovsky or any of the other kinds of men Carrie dated and loved on the show. It does mean that if none of them come along, me and my hair are perfectly fine with that! We’ve got other things to do…

& The City

It’s been almost 2 years since I moved away from New York City. Some days it feels like just yesterday that I was walking the concrete jungle and trying to find my way in the city of dreams. And other days, the whole 8+ years I lived there feel themselves, like a dream. I haven’t been back since a whirlwind visit last year for a friend’s wedding.

Not for lack of wanting too, it’s just the timing hasn’t worked out. And to be honest, I feel like a part of me never wants to go back. What if I remember how much I loved it and I want to stay? What if I have another anxiety attack like my first time back after moving? New York was such a roller coaster city for me. I’m sure I’m not alone in that.

wpid-screenshot_2015-08-24-15-56-35-1.png

No matter how I feel about the Big Apple or why I had to move away, I still consider it home. I’ve blogged about this before, but I found myself in New York City. I became a writer. I started this blog there. I created my web series there. I was bold and I was creative and the thing that makes New York…NEW YORK, somehow ended up making me…ME!!

You can’t deny that there’s something about New York that can bring out our inner angels…or demons. New York forces you to be yourself…”after all, everyone else is taken.” Isn’t that how the quote goes?

The truth is…I miss New York. Maybe not the winters…I’ll always be happier in the sun. But I miss the pace. I miss walking 47 blocks after work on a Wednesday, just because. I miss sushi delivered at midnight and brunching all day with friends. I miss cab rides (who thought that would happen.) I miss my friends. Sometimes, when I’m delirious, I even miss dating in New York…though not too much!

I’m excited to return to the City. I want to see how it’s changed. I want to see how I’ve changed. I want to see if it still feels, even a little bit, like home. We’ll see what happens.

New York is unpredictable by nature. The only thing you can rely on is that it’s unreliable! As a hurricane, I can relate.

Today, I feel like this:2.jpg

I hope I find that who I was back then and who I am today are working together to make me who I’ll be tomorrow.

After all, I wouldn’t be me without New York or Florida or California. So…New York, I’m coming back for ya! Please be kind, I’m a little rusty!!

Stilettos

I spent the better part of my 00’s teetering around in the highest of heels. In fact, I was a firm believer that the higher the better! And I didn’t even know who Carrie Bradshaw was back then. So, it wasn’t from a desire to live the Sex and the City lifestyle.

There’s just something about wearing stilettos that is empowering AF!! Maybe it’s that “anything you can do, I can do better” mentality. It reminds of that quote about Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire:

August 20, 2018 • 8_00 PM till sunriseThe Rooftop on 5thbring your dancing shoes.jpg

Heels make you taller obviously! They make you walk with confidence, unless you don’t know how to walk in them…then they make you look like this:

model-falls-on-runway-o.gif

Ladies, back me up on this! We’ve all had those shoes that just made us feel like we could rule the planet, if we chose to. But we’ve also had those shoes that we immediately regretted wearing.

And…I will confess, my desire to play baby giraffe at the office, on a Friday night, at brunch with my girlfriends or on a date has waned. I won’t blame my age for it. Those “the older I get…” statements make me cringe. And I don’t actually think it’s about being older. Plenty of women and hell, men my age and older are still rocking stilettos that even strippers would think twice about wearing. So let’s not blame age here.

I think I’ve just experienced the high heel lifestyle. Been there…worn them, and in New York City no less. That’s living the Carrie Bradshaw dream life right there!

And look…I still love a great pair of heels, I just prefer them to be a little more comfortable, a little less sky high. Like these kitten heels I rescued from Goodwill. They are just my height.

IMG_20170502_081859_943

So, to all the ladies out there doing everything that men do, but backwards and in high heels. No matter how high your heels are today, just know that you are strong, powerful and a freaking bad-ass!

On the Subject of…

High School.

Recently I have been binge watching  the, sadly, short-lived Carrie Diaries (only 2 seasons…sad face.) And like all the teen dramas I’ve enjoyed in my life (Dawson’s Creek, The OC, One Tree Hill, etc) watching it makes me feel like maybe I missed something.

I never had a first kiss in high school or a date to the  prom. My girlfriends and I never asked the good questions about sex and while I had plenty of crushes on cute boys…what’s the point if none of the boys ever knew it?

That’s not to say that there weren’t plenty of seminal moments in my high school experience. There were. But what little remains of my spotty memory of events is mixed with stories my parents told me, pictures in a yearbook and a box full of notes from people I haven’t seen in over 15 years.

Maybe teenagers these days are more self aware because of You Tube and Facebook and the internet in general. They’re creating a generation of people who are watching themselves grow up on camera…in print. Permanently, for the world to see and share. Then again, maybe it was just me. Maybe I was the only one floating along and phoning the whole experience in. I was a D student who never raised my hand and rarely spoke up in class. A far cry from the Nerd you know today!!

Looking back at those tender, wonder years I wish a piece of who I am now had been found back then. If only because maybe I could have tapped into my confident, ass-kicking, girl bossy ways much sooner. It’s not like that girl wasn’t somewhere inside me back then, waiting to break out. I was just too scared of who I could have been, of who I eventually became.

So many of these fears are explored and overcome in high school and yeah…I managed to bungle my way through some of them. But out of all the lessons I’ve watched play out on these teeny bopper, baby mama dramas, I have to say (lamentably) it’s the things of a more romantical nature that I really missed out on the most in high school.

I was a bit of a late bloomer in that area…in fact, I’ll let you know when that actually happens. Because I still get crushes on boys that never know about it. Needless to say…I missed a lot of things that would have been much easier if I’d gotten it out of the way in high school. But that’s not my story.

And, Hey!! Maybe it’s never too late to bloom.

I am where I am, who I am and what I am. And the only thing worth wondering about is…what’s next for me?

Whatever it is…I feel it coming!

Favorite Fictional Fashion Sense

I’m sure most of you, gentle readers, already know about my love of fashion. I studied fashion design in college and moved to New York expressly to pursue a career in fashion. I did my internship here and had big dreams of creating my own fashion label. As we all know, dreams change!

Here are the characters who’s fashion I love the most. I think the photos speak for themselves!!

30 Days of Nerdy Hair – Day 4

Day 4: Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City

With only weeks left in New York City (24 days to be exact) I thought I’d pick someone who most represents NYC in my mind. Carrie Bradshaw herself!

image

My hair may be naturally curly, but I have to roll it in tight knots the night before to get Bradshaw level curls.

My hair couldn’t help but wonder…”When will waiting for the one be done?

Fictional Couples I Ship (Classic)

So I had to go ahead and do a post about those couples that are no longer on television. These are from what one might affectionately refer to as the good old days. Before couples had mashed up names, before Twitter could save a show. Back when the CW was The WB. Back when you spent years and years watching the sexual tension get more and more tense, till it’s season 10 and that couple still isn’t together and all you want is a freaking happy ending (I’m looking at you, JAG!) These are the couples that came before the couples we ship today. And I couldn’t just choose 5. So I picked as many as I wanted! As always, thanks to The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick for the blog topics!! I also wrote about today’s couples… Click Here for that post.

Major spoilers ahead in this one, but since all of these shows are off the air, I’m just gonna go ahead and say, if you haven’t been spoiled by now, then don’t read on till you’ve watched all of these shows. Each ship is as magnificent as the one that follows!!

#1 – Harm and Mac from JAG

image

10 seasons. 10 seasons of sexual tension till this couple finally got together in the last episode… at the last possible moment. Against all odds and executive producer, Donald P. Bellisario’s campaign to keep the couple apart forever, they finally got together. But after 10 years it was basically to placate the fans, then again after all that time… why wouldn’t you?

#2 – Chandler and Monica from Friends

image

Sure Ross and Rachel are the obvious choice from Friends, but it’s Monica and Chandler that sneaks up on you and steals your heart completely. They start off as… well… Friends. And after that time in London, they start down a road to something so much more. And infinitely better than the Ross and Rachel will they/won’t they. Because there was never any won’t they. We knew they would and they never disappointed! And with Friends on Netflix now, we can all go back and relive the adorable romance of Mondler…Chandlica… Not sure what their shipper name would be these days.

#3 – Mulder and Scully  from The X-Files

image

This was another fictional relationship that was a long time coming. We knew they belonged together, they knew they belonged together. I’m not sure why it took them so dang long. Perhaps it was the impending doom of regular alien activity that seemed to leave romance at the door. But they found a way, even after David Duchovny left the show and it really should have been cancelled in his absence.

#4 – Dr. Mike and Sully from Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman

image

I loooove me some Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. This is a couple that did some serious dancing for a plenty of seasons. But they did get together and eventually have little Katie Elizabeth. Ultimately delivering the kiss of death (as it was know when a couple would get married on a TV show back then.) Once Sully and Michaela finally got it together and got married, everyone basically found no reason left to watch the show. Sure, Colleen had a love interest and there was that whole Dorothy and Cloud Dancing thing, but it was the long-haired, brooding Sully and the longer-haired, intrepid Michaela that really kept us invested in the show.

#5 – Everyone on all Star Treks

Captain Picard and Beverly Crusher from The Next Generation

6a329147ca9a10b29110b2f9b48b01b5

This one sadly had no big wedding payoff. Only the fleeting sense that they belonged together and they both knew it. Lovers came and lovers went, but these friends always remained in each others lives and that is something that transcends romance!

Commander Riker and Deanna Troi

add9aa68049d17f82bfbdde46eb41aa6

They had a little time of will they/ won’t they going on. She even dated Worf and he dated plenty of women who were not right for him. Sometimes you gotta kiss a lot of frogs. Am I right? But eventually in the movie Star Trek: Nemesis (arguably not the best of the Trek movies) these two finally tied the knot!

Lieutenant Worf and Jadzia Dax

d185b28347f681f78e37db6bf90df3b7

Sure, Worf and Deanna had a thing going back on the Enterprise for a short spell, but everyone knew that she belonged with Riker. Leaving Worf wide open to leave The Next Generation and find his lady love on Deep Space Nine. And find her he did!

Constable Odo and Major Kira

image

This relationship begins as so many of the best ones do, with utter loathing. Odo and Kira can’t stand each other at first. He’s a changeling, she’s Bajoran. Both have a job to do and find it best if everyone stays out of each other’s… oh wait, what’s that? They love each other now? Of course, they do!

Seven of Nine and Commander Chakotay

65e0c97312127260c2463279b5e6d81e

I love a good tale of opposites attract. Who would have thought, when Seven of Nine was ripped from the Borg collective that she and the spicy Maquis Commander Chakotay would fall truly, madly, deeply in love. The best ships are the ones you don’t see coming!

Tom Paris and B’elanna Torres

16c437f940d69388332b1cbd8d9809b1

That was not the case with these two. Another tempestuous pairing that was destined for true love. Of course they couldn’t stand each other in the beginning, they hadn’t reached that part when they are yelling at each other and realize the very fine line that exists between love and hate. But once they did it was beautiful to watch them fall. And eventually have a little half Klingon/ half human baby in a Delta Quadrant far, far away!!

#6  – Joey and Pacey from Dawson’s Creek

image

Sorry to you Dawson fans, but there is no way that our girl Joey Potter was ever going to end up with a sap like Dawson! Pacey was always the guy for her. We knew it back in high school when they first did it at on the ski trip and we knew it when they got stuck in the K-Mart together. She makes him wanna be a better man!

#7 – Max and Liz from Roswell

image

Roswell only had 3 seasons, but from episode 1, it was always Max and Liz. He saved her life. And not crazy pants Tess nor evil alien spawn or the Skins could separate them from that bond! As you can see from the picture above, it worked out in the end! Happily ever after ensued and I cry every time I watch that finale!

#8 – Lois and Clark from Smallville

image

After suffering through 4 years of Clark pining after stupid Lana, Lois finally came on the scene like a proper hurricane! And anyone who knows anything about anything at all knows that Lois and Clark are meant to be together! So, go ahead Lois, flirt with Oliver Queen. And feel free, Clark, to pine all you want after Lana.. but in the end it’s Lois and Clark and everyone knows it! This is a show that knows how to ship and didn’t wait 10 years for their characters to say I love you. They did, however, wait 10 years for them to say “I Do.” Can’t give all the good stuff away up front!

#9 – Niles and Daphne from Frasier

image

Poor Niles Crane. We watched him pine after Daphne from the minute she walked into his life. He was married, she was single. The she was engaged, and he was single. It took years for them to finally be on the same page. But once they worked it out and got together it was completely glorious!

#10 – Everyone on Lost

Jack and Kate

image

This was a big will they/ won’t they. Jack loved Kate. Then Kate slept with Sawyer. Sawyer loved Kate, but Kate loved Jack. Jack loved Juliet, but Juliet was potentially evil. Then Jack and Kate left the island, but then they needed to go back. Meanwhile back on the island…

Sawyer and Juliet

image

The island started hopping time, leaving Juliet and Sawyer to start their romance. And finally at the end of the day Jack ended up with Kate, Juliet ended up with Sawyer (up in that purgatory church thing) and all was right with the fictional world of Lost. Whew!

Jin and Sun

image

The union of Jin and Sun was never really up in the air. They started out married and lasted until their untimely demise. But don’t worry, they too met again in that church purgatory! What I loved most about Sun and Jin was Jin’s character development. He started out as a tight ass who never let Sun be Sun and ended up being one of my favorite characters on the show!

Charlie and Claire

image

Lost was a show that was constantly bringing the pain, but nothing was quite as painful as poor Charlie’s death on not-Penny’s boat. And in the finale when they panned the shot to a very happy Claire and Charlie, I defy you to have had a dry eye!! It was beautiful, it was moving, it was television at it’s most heart-warming!!

#11 – Buffy and Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer

b5fe28aef50e3ff36f6a499dc6278d0d

Plenty of people out there are Team Angel. He has his place and we love him, but there that’s whole unfortunate Angelus part of the package. So along came William the Bloody. Of course he was evil. All the best ones start out bad but then make that pivotal turn towards love. Spike spent season 5 pining for the Buffster. We knew she was too good for him. She was the slayer for Pete’s sake! But then she died and spent all that time dragging herself through the proverbial muck by lower her standards and getting busy with Spike. And there is that unfortunate scene in the bathroom, that I’ll never forgive him for, but he knew he was evil so he went to get his soul. And eventually gave his life for the Scoobies and their cause. He is my favorite and I love him!!!

#12 – Mal and Inara from Firefly

image

Any Firefly fan out there knows the deep, heart break that is the cancellation of this television gem. It sucked, it was depressing, it left us too soon. And Mal and Inara never had the chance to declare their love for each other. The signs were all there. And deep down they both knew the truth. But truth unspoken is just heresay. It’s a deep sadness we all keenly feel. But I think we can surmise that eventually these crazy kids said what they needed to say! One can hope!

#13 – The 10th Doctor and Rose from Doctor Who

4e80dbc3110487d82af90c1f384f8931

Oh Rose! So many people hate you, but I know you belong with the regenerated human version of the 10th Doctor via his severed hand. It’s a classic tale. Girl meets Chris Eccleston. Chris Eccleston becomes David Tennant. Everyone is ok with that. David Tennant leaves girl on a beach in an alternate reality. Girl spends all of her time trying to get back to real reality only to have David Tennant split into two David Tennant’s (hello nurse!) Classic! This one had a weirdly happy ending. She ended up with an inferior version of David Tennant. And a human, non-time traveling David Tennant is better than no David Tennant at all. Everyone knows that!

#14 – Steve and Miranda from Sex and the City

8e529836a236ae2466bf4bc7993bc428

Whenever you mention Sex and the City, most people bring up Carrie and Big or Carrie and Aiden or Carrie and whoever. But it’s Steve and Miranda who make it work and make it last. Sure there are some rough patches, but that’s what makes it so beautiful. They find their way back to each other even after all the bad! It’s a tale as old as time and worth watching over and over again.

I know it’s a long one, but honestly, this list could have been even longer. And it’s my list so I’ll write as much as I want to! 😉

I’m such an easy shipper. Throw a little tension my way and I’m all about THAT couple!! I get drawn in and I just have to binge-watch till everyone is happily married off. I’m the same way in real life. Perhaps I’m just waiting till everyone has a happy ending before I even think about finding mine.

Who do you ship!! Come on over to my Twitter party tonight at 9pm EST where we will be talking about love and shippers. Join in with the hashtag #NerdySlumberParty There will be giveaways and plenty of nerd talk! Virtually see you there!! @nerdinthecity

30 Days of Nerdy Hair

Day 25: Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City

There are many Bradshaw hairstyles to choose from. But the weather sorta chochose this one for me.

image

image

Just pile all of your hair into a bun on top of your head. Use a bobby pin in the back to secure it. And make sure you have a messy curly texture to start off with unless you are going for a more polished Bradshaw bun. Which does exist.

30 Days of Nerdy Hair

Day 29 – Carrie Bradshaw

Todays’s inspiration is Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City. Known for unique fashion and bi, awesome hair.
image
What you need here is a coupke days dirty hair, some volumizing dry shampoo and Big, Sexy hair’s back comb in a bottle.
image
I curled all my hair in individual smaller chunks to give it a piecier look. Then sprayed it with a mix of the 2 sprays.
