Day 17: Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz

Aside from being the 17th day in my Thrift Store Cosplay series, it also happens to be National Thrift Store Day. And I didn’t even plan it that way! August was clearly the month that this series was meant to be in!

To celebrate this occasion, I had a couple adventures today.

Stop #1: First up, a tour of my local Goodwill. At BlogHer 17 back in June, I happened upon a Goodwill table at the conference and met Dominik, who is Goodwill Central Florida’s Volunteer Director. Dominik invited me to one of their WOW Tours and also to an Inspiration Breakfast they’re having in September (which I will share with you when it happens!) And today was tour day! I don’t know if they planned it to be on National Thrift Store Day, but it was quite fortuitous!

There’s a lot of misinformation out there about Goodwill. And rather than give in to the chatter or let that influence me, I thought the best way to find out more information is to go directly to the source and learn about the company from within. I’ll be bringing you a lot more blog posts on what I’ve learned and am learning, but I want to say this…I used to shop fast fashion brands and I could no longer feel good about that decision given the waste, potential for human trafficking elements in production and general knowledge of shady practices in a lot of main stream fast fashion companies (if you want names…I can give you names!) Goodwill is a company that is doing great things in Central Florida and I can and do feel great about supporting them and I will continue to do so as I learn more about the company!! You can check out my Instagram story today and see the whole thread of my day!!

Stop #2: After my fun morning at Goodwill I stopped at OMG Thrift because they made me their Selfie Star of the Week and I won a free $10 gift card. So I went to pick it up. And will probably use that pretty soon, as free money doesn’t stay in my wallet very long and I love shopping there!! Expect to see more about it in my Instagram story.

Stop #3: This morning, I hastily ransacked my closet for items to donate to Goodwill this morning, on National Thrift Store Day. Sadly I could only scrounge together 1 bag, because a couple weeks ago I donated 8 bags of stuff, so my closet was slim pickin’s. Not only that, I totally forgot to give it to the OBT Goodwill that I was touring this morning. So I had to add a 3rd stop to my Thrift Store tour today. I stopped at the Salvation Army to donate my measly bag of items. The Salvation Army is exactly 2 minutes from my work, so it was incredibly convenient to donate there. I usually try to divide my donations up and give them to Goodwill, Salvation Army and also my local Boys and Girls Club thrift store. You can’t go wrong with any of those options!!

With all that information for ya, it’s back to the cosplay. Here’s my Dorothy:

Day 14: Aladdin

Aladdin is one of my all time favorite Disney movies. It’s neck and neck with Lion King for me. I must have watched it over 1,000 times as a kid and still continue to watch it as an adult (though since the death of Robin Williams it’s been much harder to watch it without crying uncontrollably!)

Which is your favorite Disney movie? We all have one (or 4.)

Thrift Store Cosplay Introduction

Thrift Store Cosplay fashion blogger nerd post Instagram challenge

Who’s ready for a brand new Instagram challenge? #thriftstorecosplay is coming at you starting today!

Thrift Store Cosplay fashion blogger nerd post Instagram challenge

This challenge was inspired by something called #ClosetCosplay that can also be found on the Instagrams. One of my favorite actresses from the Pemberley Digital You Tube web series, Emma Approved, Joanna Sotomura did this challenge back in May and I loved her take on it so much that I really felt like I needed to add my own version to the mix.

If you haven’t noticed, lately I am all about that thrift store life. Goodwill, Salvation Army, vintage stores, consignment, Plato’s Closet…those are the stores for me! I have actually given up a lot of other shopping at the places I used to shop like H&M, Forever 21, Old Navy, Target and TJ Maxx.

This decision has come about partly because I love the message behind shopping thriftily. I love the cycle of thrift store clothing. I purchase from thrift stores and I give items to thrift stores and feel like I’m constantly contributing to the cycle of fashion and you are far less likely to have a “who wore it best” moment with vintage, consignment and thrift.

The other reason is that a lot of the brands that I was shopping before weren’t transparent in their production. Which is not something I am interested in supporting. After attending meetings with the Florida Abolitionist society and becoming more aware of the dangers of fast fashion, I have become passionate about changing the way I shop for my clothes. If you are interested in it too, then #thriftstorecosplay is a great way to give yourself fashion goals to achieve at thrift stores and start to populate your closet with really interesting and unique pieces.

That’s a long, drawn out of way of saying, I’ve completely changed the way I shop! And I wanted to share it with you, reader fam, in a fun way. Hence the mix of #closetcosplay and #thriftstorecosplay. Come on over to my Instagram and check back here for a display of my daily cosplay selections. Everything you see in my cosplays is from thrift stores, consignment, vintage shops, my own closet or my dad’s and grandma’s closet. Going through family member’s closets is always a fun endeavor and you never know what treasures you will find!!

And if you want to join in with your own version of #thriftstorecosplay and #closetcosplay then join one of those hashtags and make sure to tag me @nerdinthesand so I can see them and be part of your story!!

Fashionable

I love fashion. I have loved it my whole life. From when I was a little girl in the 80’s wearing 4 pairs of socks stacked on top of each other to the 90’s when I experimented with wearing my skirts over my pants to my college years when I studied Apparel Design and Technology at Florida State University to now where I can be found sharing my fashion sense here on my blog and on Instagram!

I used to dream of being a big time fashion designer living in New York City, dressing models, cutting fabrics, making the hard call about sleeve lengths. Or even transitioning over to print and working at a fashion magazine. My fashion design role models were Zac Posen, Norma Kamali, Vera Wang and Dolce & Gabbana.

When I graduated from college, I immediately headed off to the big city to make my dreams come true. I got an internship at LaROK, moved into the first apartment that came along in Brooklyn and started to live those big dreams!

The internship was 4 months long and in those 4 months, my love for fashion never died, but my interest in continuing to work in the industry started waning. I had a few friends at my internship that weren’t eager to rip my small town heart out of my chest and feed it to the gods of fashion, but they were the exception, not the rule.

It’s no secret that the fashion industry is competitive, cutthroat and very much an industry where it pays to be out for number 1.

Does that sound like me to you, gentle reader? Guess how many people in the fashion industry count Star Wars as their favorite movie…let’s just say, I didn’t encounter any. And being a nerd? Well, that wasn’t exactly de rigueur, by industry standards at the time.

I quickly adopted the tell-tale black wardrobe popular with the New York fashion scene. Something that still baffles me to this day. As one of the fashion capitals of the world, how is black their go to color? There’s a whole rainbow to work with, people! Find a new hue!!

All this to say that sometimes dreams are just that and they have no place in the real world. Causing a big shift in how I viewed my life once the dreams of being a fashion mogul faded.

I went on to work in the bridal industry, as a nanny, in a preschool, in social media and now I’m a worship leader at local church back in the smaller town I started out in. Somewhere in the midst of my life, this little blog was born.

I never thought I’d enjoy writing as much as I do (though the signs were always there…I always loved the essay portion of exams and doing book reports.) Life is a big twisty bobcat pretzel and if you fight to take the twists out, then you’re sort of missing the point.

I sometimes think about that alternate universe that spun off when I made the choice to move to New York and work in fashion. Somewhere out there, there’s a version of me that has dedicated herself to sleeve lengths and runway shows. She’s sacrificed Christmases at home, friendships with real people and eating a healthy diet for the more glamorous life of a famous fashion designer. She dresses Beyonce for the Met Gala and goes to fancy parties. But she doesn’t write and she doesn’t go to Star Wars conventions and she definitely doesn’t lose time thinking about her future mutant powers and what her superhero costume might look like.

I don’t say this lightly…alternative universe Liz is so basic!!

On the Subject of…

High School.

Recently I have been binge watching  the, sadly, short-lived Carrie Diaries (only 2 seasons…sad face.) And like all the teen dramas I’ve enjoyed in my life (Dawson’s Creek, The OC, One Tree Hill, etc) watching it makes me feel like maybe I missed something.

I never had a first kiss in high school or a date to the  prom. My girlfriends and I never asked the good questions about sex and while I had plenty of crushes on cute boys…what’s the point if none of the boys ever knew it?

That’s not to say that there weren’t plenty of seminal moments in my high school experience. There were. But what little remains of my spotty memory of events is mixed with stories my parents told me, pictures in a yearbook and a box full of notes from people I haven’t seen in over 15 years.

Maybe teenagers these days are more self aware because of You Tube and Facebook and the internet in general. They’re creating a generation of people who are watching themselves grow up on camera…in print. Permanently, for the world to see and share. Then again, maybe it was just me. Maybe I was the only one floating along and phoning the whole experience in. I was a D student who never raised my hand and rarely spoke up in class. A far cry from the Nerd you know today!!

Looking back at those tender, wonder years I wish a piece of who I am now had been found back then. If only because maybe I could have tapped into my confident, ass-kicking, girl bossy ways much sooner. It’s not like that girl wasn’t somewhere inside me back then, waiting to break out. I was just too scared of who I could have been, of who I eventually became.

So many of these fears are explored and overcome in high school and yeah…I managed to bungle my way through some of them. But out of all the lessons I’ve watched play out on these teeny bopper, baby mama dramas, I have to say (lamentably) it’s the things of a more romantical nature that I really missed out on the most in high school.

I was a bit of a late bloomer in that area…in fact, I’ll let you know when that actually happens. Because I still get crushes on boys that never know about it. Needless to say…I missed a lot of things that would have been much easier if I’d gotten it out of the way in high school. But that’s not my story.

And, Hey!! Maybe it’s never too late to bloom.

I am where I am, who I am and what I am. And the only thing worth wondering about is…what’s next for me?

Whatever it is…I feel it coming!

Bun Challenge

#12Days of Star Wars Instagram Challenge Nerds

Perhaps you’ve seen the popular Instagram account @willitbeard and if you haven’t, prepare to be delighted by Pierce Thiot and his beard. Pierce posed the question “Will it Beard?” And has set out to see exactly what kind of everyday objects, foods, toys, etc will fit in his beard and stay in his beard. Check it out:

I call it the Bun Challenge and I’m asking you… #willitBUN

Here’s the gist: What can you strap to your head that will give you Princess Leia buns. Cinnamon buns (rather obvious), toy tires, buns made of Lego, buns made of cookie dough? Let your imagination take you away and make sure to post pictures to Instagram (@nerdinthesand) and Twitter (@nerdinthecity) with the hashtags #12DaysofStarWars and #WillitBun

I have an awesome giveaway and every picture you post and tag me in will get you an entry! Giveaway winner will be chosen on 12.8.16 at midnight! Happy Bunning!

Here’s the first one I came up with today…rather easy and obvious, but ya gotta start somewhere!

12 Days of Star Wars

#12Days of Star Wars Instagram Challenge Nerds

Nerds!! There are only 11 days left till our eyes behold the next installment in the Star Wars saga. (10 if you plan on going on Thursday night!) This Star Wars is going to have a decidedly different flavor than the 7 that have preceded it. There will be no scrawl at the beginning of the film. It’s going to take place in a timeline that we are familiar with but with a whole slew of new characters. And I, personally, am on the edge of my seat waiting for opening night!! I can barely contain my excitement!

I’m doing a Star Wars Challenge over on Instagram to give myself an outlet for all my Star Wars joy! Come play! @nerdinthesand #12DaysofStarWars

#12Days of Star Wars Instagram Challenge Nerds

What are you most looking forward to seeing in Rogue One? Brand new characters like Jyn Orso, Captain Cassian Andor, K-2SO and Director Orson Krennic? The return of familiar characters like Mon Mothma, Bail Organa and Darth Vader himself? Perhaps you’re pumped to see how it’s going to set up the story to lead right into our beloved Original Trilogy? I can’t decide which part I’m most excited about.

I just know that every time a new Star Wars comes out I feel like I did in 1999 when The Phantom Menace came out and my friends, family and I waited in line for hours for that midnight showing.

I grew up with Star Wars (this you already know) so there was never a time when it wasn’t a part of my world. I don’t remember the first time I saw Episodes IV, V and VI. But I do remember when the news hit that George was finally going to give us a prequel trilogy. The impossible had become possible. There would be more Star Wars in our future!! I felt almost the same way in 2012 when Disney announced it’s acquisition of Star Wars and that  the purchase would mean that once again, the Star Wars universe would be expanding.

So yeah…I’m pumped! There is no fandom that hits me the way Star Wars does. No fandom has ever come close. And I think…no fandom ever will.

Day 9: Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians

I had to go a little different direction with this one. I couldn’t find white hair spray and my white hair chalk failed me. But the two-tone effect is still there, making villainy that much easier!
