5 Fandom Friday

My Favorite Conventions

Today’s 5 Fandom Friday topic is the 5 conventions you’ve been to or wish to attend. The very first convention I ever attended was Star Wars Celebration. I took my brother for his birthday and it opened a whole new world for me. I’d never been to a con before that. I had no idea what to expect. No idea what was about to happen. I got bit by the convention bug…hard! So here’s my list.

#1 – Star Wars Celebration

download

As I said, Celebration is the first convention I ever attended. So it holds a very special place in my heart! Plus it’s an entire con devoted to that galaxy far, far away. My favorite of the galaxies! Click Here for more information.

#2 – New York Comic Con

download (1)

New York Comic Con is a must for nerds of all persuasions! It has something for everyone. And this year it even eclipsed San Diego Comic Con’s staggering attendance. There are panels about everything you could ever want to know about. Sometimes I go with friends, sometimes I go along, and I always have a blast! Click Here for more information.

#3 – Nerd HQ

Nerd HQ was born out of Zachary Levi’s desire to bring a more personalized experience to the fans. And to raise money for Operation Smile at the same time. I haven’t heard if it’s coming back for a 5th year this year, but I sure hope it is. Because it’s an amazing event with a very worthy cause! Click Here for more information.

#4 – Book Con

SundayPM5-BookConSlider

Last year was the very first year of Book Con and it was amazing. An entire convention dedicated to books and reading!. Why didn’t we think of this earlier. If you have a chance to attend this year… do it! Click Here for more information.

#5 – Leaky/ Geeky Con

images

What once was Leaky Con, a convention born out of a deep, abiding love for all things Harry Potter, is now Geeky Con. A convention that celebrates all manner of geekdom! I can’t wait to see how it will change. Click Here for more information.

A little blast from conventions past.

Hopefully I’ll be able to make it to a whole bunch more this year. I have a couple things brewing for 2015 and I can’t wait to share them with you. In the meantime, see you at the cons!

Once Upon a Comic Con

Stepping off the subway at 34th and Broadway, you can sense in the air that this is not your typical Thursday in New York City. Something special is going on.

Those in the know are aware of what that something is. But the lay people of NY may be confused by the sight of Gandalf the grey on their train. And really confused by Two-Face Gandalf the Grey and White. But hey… it’s New York. So maybe they chalk it up to the quirks and oddities that come with everyday city life.

But then comes Princess Peach and Darth Vader. A Jedi My Little Pony walks by followed closely by an Optimus-Bumblebee hybrid. (Hybrids were very big this year. Click HERE for a laugh about it from College Humor.) Maybe characters they don’t even have a name for. These are the unique, non-mainstream costumes that only those of the “nerd” persuasion can identify and truly appreciate.

Yes… this is New York Comic Con.

A place where Harley Quinn and Iron Man can be seen walking hand in hand. A magical land where Bronies and Deadpools and Stormtroopers all belong. And where you can find a unique interpretation of Elsa around every corner. Basically it’s nerd heaven!

The second you walk through those big glass doors, after making it through the never ending line that finally ends and you have your bags and weapons checked at the door, you do one of two things… 1. Quickly race to the first panel of the day or 2. Head straight up to the showroom floor. Either way you head there will be another line waiting for you. But it’s a line filled with Poison Ivy’s, Slave Leia’s, 10th Doctors and Disney Princesses… so is this line the end of the world? Nope! Just another day at the office.

If you have any Comic Con Spidey sense, you brought your snacks, wore the proper footwear and have leisurely mapped your day out, incorporating ample people watching time. Because that in and of itself is a beautiful and fascinating thing.

Witnessing people in their natural element is an amazing treat and these people, my people, are most at home here at the Con. Among thousands of other like minds who understand their fandoms and passions. I can fall as easily into conversation with the Cumberbitches as I can with the Whovians. And the Trekkies and the Hookers (a newer one for sure.) And even with the DC universe vs the Marvel universe… here at the Con we are all nerds in this together. No warring factions here.

And for the first year ever, we have eclipsed the staggering mythological numbers that SDCC pulls in every year. And why not? After all, we are no red-headed step child. We are NYCC. A tour de force, a tidal wave of nerd culture. And in New York City we never do anything small!!

Friday’s Nerd on the Scene

Post by Taylor Henderson

We raised a huge amount of money for Operation smile today from a full day of back to back to back to back sold out panels-to multiple sets of Smiles for Smiles with the likes of Zac Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, Elijah Wood, Colin Ferguson, Brenton Thwaites, and Kal Penn. There were book signings, poster signings, an auction of zac’s bag of stuff and so much more.

Zac’s mystery panel had a plethora of wonderful people including the myth busters and Alan Tudyk and Nathan fillion made an appearance here today as well, as usual 🙂

Seth green’s robot chicken panel was hysterical and a ton of questions got answered which the fans loved. It was another beautiful day in San Diego, and everyone seemed to have an amazing time today!

#IWantMyNerdHQ and so do you!!!

If you haven’t heard about Zachary Levi’s crowd funding efforts for Nerd HQ by now, then I have to ask you… Do you live in a hole? Do you not have Wifi? Can you even really call yourself a nerd?

Zachary Levi, Photo by Eric Blackmon

Yesterday, the I Want My Nerd HQ website went up on Indie GoGo and within an hour over $28,000 was raised in an effort to support what Zachary Levi and his Nerd Machine are doing. By the end of the day… over $68,000. The goal is $1 million.

If you have been to Nerd HQ before, then you know why we support it. If you haven’t… what are you waiting for? One of Willie Wonka’s golden tickets? Jump on it!!!!

From the photo booth to the parties to the Conversations for a Cause. From the signings to the merch to the Serenity screening. Nerd HQ is an amazing experience!! And it is a free event to attend. Conversation money goes directly to Operation Smile as does the money from some of the other wonderfully nerdy surprises that tend to happen. Not only will you experience something really special, but you will be helping a cause that is very worthy of the efforts!

Head over to The Nerd Machine or to the Indie Gogo website. Tweet the crap out of it #IWantMyNerdHQ. Add Twibbons to your Twitter and Fibbons to your Facebook. Blog, vlog and shout the word! This event is ground-breaking. It’s important. It’s freakin’ fun. So go now and do it! Seriously!

The Countdown Begins

image

Only 3 days till New York Comic Con opens it’s doors to nerds from all over the world. Granted NYCC is not quite the behemoth that SDCC is, but we do alright! (If you count 30,000+ as merely alright)

image

So check out the official NYCC website. And start planning your days now, nerds. Cause you know what to expect. And if it’s your first time  then check back for tips on how to survive this nerd mecca.

30 Days of Nerdy Hair

Day 27: Princess Jasmine from Aladdin

Today is the first day of San Diego Comic Con. It’s also the first day of Zachary Levi’s Nerd HQ, which is the real reason (and best reason)for being in San Diego, CA this weekend!!

To kick off the finals days of 30 Days of Nerdy hair, I chose Princess Jasmine from Disney’s Aladdin.

image

To create this Disney princess look, I started with pretty tealish ribbon. Created a headband in the front and tied it at the nape of my neck. Then I rolled the front pieces of my hair around to the back, bobby pinning along the way.

Next I created a low pony tail and wrapped that in the same ribnon, securing in the back with bobbys.
Finally I created a second pony tail half way down and did the same thing with the ribbon.

Good News, Bad News

The bad news is that I will not be in San Diego this weekend. If you don’t know to what I’m referring, then perhaps you’ve come to the wrong place. I’m talking, of course, about none other than mecca for the nerd inclined… COMIC CON! Sadly due to circumstances beyond my control I can’t go. (Imagine the tears and long lingering cry of ‘NOOOOOOOOO’ as I shake my fist in the air)

What this also means is that I’ll be missing out on another newly important and exciting event in a nerd’s life, The Nerd Machine’s NerdHQ, pioneered by the champion of all nerdom, Mr. Zachary Levi.

If you are planning to be in San Diego for the Con this weekend and you don’t know what the NerdHQ is (if such an animal exists) then stop now, read no further and click here.

On to the good news. My dear friend and die hard Whovian (you know where she’ll be Sunday afternoon), Audrey Carlson, will be there and has generously agreed to report back on all her nerdeavors with a section I’ll be calling ‘Nerd on Site.’

Nerd on Site

So make sure to check back for updates, excitement and a general sense of nerd community. Other places to get your fix, TheNerdMachine.com, TheNerdist.comBreak.comSpike TV will be reporting live and SDCC.com will also have updates.

Viva La Nerdolution!!
