Day 19: Kat Stratford from 10 Things I Hate About You
This morning’s choice is one of the quintessential teen movies from my youth starring Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger. 10 Things I Hate About You. A modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew.
If you are a kid of the 80’s and a teen of the 90’s then I’m sure you did not miss this movie! And if you’re like me, then you definitely dreamed of a long-haired, dreamy-eyed Heath serenading you on the bleachers at your high school. Or dang! How about at the high school in the movie. That thing was a castle. And who didn’t dream of having a live band at their high school prom, instead of a really terrible DJ. Personally… my prom was a big let down. Perhaps if I’d had this hair back then, it might have been a little better. My actual prom hair was pretty disappointing! I did it myself and back then… well let’s just say I didn’t really know how to do my hair very well. I didn’t know what it or I was capable of.
Luckily, I grew up and that disappointing prom became a distant memory. And hey, I learned how to do my hair. Now I just need a fancy dance and a serenading boy. A girl can dream, can’t she??!!
11 days to go, nerds!! Make sure to check back. I’ve still got some good styles left to try. And if you have any suggestions for the next series… make sure to leave a comment below. I’d love to hear your thoughts on styles I should attempt to recreate.
Day 5: Gabrielle from Xena Warrior Princess
This might be surprising to you, but I never watched Xena. I’ve seen an episode here and there. But it wasn’t something my parents watched and back in 1995 when I was 13, we watched whatever my parents watched. And Xena wasn’t in the mix. I’ve since come to deeply appreciate Lucy Lawless from other wonderful work (ahem BSG!) And to appreciate this show as well. But I’ve never watched it all the way through. That being said, I really like Gabrielle. Spunky side kick to Xena herself.
This one took some work mainly because my hair is much curlier than Renee O’Connor’s. But I felt like running out and fighting bad guys or something. This hairstyle makes you feel pretty bad ass!!!

Day 3: Ali from Burlesque
Happy Monday, nerds!
Today I’ve gone with Christina Aguilera’s character in Burlesque. This is by no means a must see movie, but if you like musicals and and Christina, then I think you could find enjoyment in it. Plus… Cam Gigandet never hurts a movie with his presence!!
This style presented a few challenges this morning. Mainly, my hair is not long anymore. So this is the short hair version of this style. But it works and is really fun to wear out and about!
Day 22: River Song from Doctor Who
Happy Day of the Doctor, nerds!!! In honor of the 50th anniversary of the longest running sci fi series ever I have chosen River Song.
Anyone out there who is watching the simulcast, give us a shout on Twitter @nerdinthecity or Instagram @liz_tailor481.
Day 9: Harpo Marx
I was practically raised on old black and white movies of all kinds. But my dad’s favorite funny men of all time was and is the Marx Brothers. If you have never seen Duck Soup or A Night at the Opera, then just find them and watch them and i dare you not to laugh out loud during the state room scene or the peanut stand scene.
Harpo Marx, the curly-haired, silent brother is easily my favorite one. And this pick is dedicated to my dad.
To make my hair the kind of curly that it needs to be to pull of Harpo Marx, I had to set my entire head of hair in Bantu knots the night before.
Once you take them all out in the morning, you get this…
“And a hard boiled egg!”
Day 5: Lucille Ball from I Love Lucy
Today’s inspiration is dedicated to my sister-in-law, Caroline, who love, love, loves I Love Lucy!!
Who doesn’t love her though… am I right?
In order to accomplish this I wore my hair in little knots to bed last night to create a curlier texture to my hair. Especially my bangs. It was all about that puff of bangs!
Then I arranged the bangs in a sort of circlish configuration, threw on a meddlesome housewife headband and put the rest up in a twist.
Voila. Transported back in time!
