30 Days of Nerdy Hair

Day 8 – Elizabeth Swan

Avast me hearties, it be International Talk Like a Pirate Day today. So me inspiration came from Keira Knightly’s Elizabeth Swann in Pirates of the Caribbean. Go out and grab a rum and toast those scurvy scaliwags of the sea!!

To create today’s hair I curl straightened my hair using my Chi straightener. Any straightener with a barrel edge will do this. Then I took the entire front section of my hair (leaving out a few wisps to curl later) and I teased it up and smoothed the front up and over to create the lift you see in the front. Mine is slightly less high that Keira’s. But it gives the desired effect.

Then I wrapped then bulk of my hair into a high bun (leaving out a large curl piece at the base of the neck to curl).

It ended up looking like this.

Finally, I curled the extra tendrils around my face and large curl that hangs over the shoulder.

I also added a pearl necklace for that old timey look.

Enjoy the rest of yer Talk Like a Pirate Day.  Go rent Muppet Treasure Island or Swiss Family Robinson or Captain Blood or the king of the pirate films Pirates of the Caribbean. Yo ho, Yo ho a pirate’s life for me!!!

What is it about pirates that is so romantic? Because the reality is that they were dirty, villainous, rowdy bad guys. With rotten teeth and the occasional outbreak of scurvy. Who pillaged, plundered, raped and murdered their way through port after port. Not exactly the ideal career path.

But I’m first to admit that I love me some pirates. Thanks in part to Johnny Depp‘s embodiment of Capt’n Jack Sparrow and the whole Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, pirating became sexy and romantic all over again. Though strangely enough, pirates have always had an air of romance and adventure about them. From Long John Silver to Blackbeard to Calico Jack. All plundering aside.

So, if you’re like me and you dream of adventure on the high seas, then come see Help Wanted: Pirates at the Magnet Theater on 29th street. It opens tomorrow and runs till July. Bring your kids and a savvy sense of whimsy. Check out more info and get tickets here: www.sittersstudio.com/theater/

For more pirate fun watch Muppet Treasure Island (a family fave!) and the brand new The Pirates: Band of Misfits  (incidentally, featuring the vocal stylings of a one Mr. David Tennant!)

There’s never too much when it comes to pirates!!
