Day 7: Hermoine Granger from Harry Potter
Day 7: Hermoine Granger from Harry Potter
On the subject of friendships that will not be stopped by distance, hard times or stormy weather! Two of my quality handful came down to sunny, ole Florida for Ladies’ Weekend and it was completely epic!!
Thursday, I picked the girls up from the airport and revels were had!
On Friday, the three of us boarded the Hogwarts express and headed for that magical land known as Universal, home of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter!! Where we represented each of our houses in style.
I am the resident Gryffindor…brave, daring, chivalrous, courageous.
Erin is the our Hufflepuff…loyal, kind, honest and friendly.
And Cristina is our Slytherin…cunning, ambitious, determined, a leader.
Together we are a powerful force to be reckoned with and while it’s true that we didn’t have a Ravenclaw to bring along on this trip, we really weren’t missing one. We are quite possibly the best traveling companions. Cristina is the planner, the one who keeps us organized and on schedule. I’m the one who makes sure we veer off schedule every once in a while and allows the wind to blow us here and there. And Erin steadies the two of our opposing forces. We are stronger together and it made for the most delightful day!
Check out our Harry Potter adventures on Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #SlytherGryffinPuff
Saturday, we were off to the other magical place in Florida…the most magical place in all the land (sorry Harry, the House of Mouse wins!) Disney World!! We had lofty goals and were going to attempt all four parks! We made it to everything we wanted to do at Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom and ended up in Epcot for dinner and fireworks. (Sadly Animal Kingdom had to be sacrificed for the greater good.) The best part of all is that months ago we decided to Disney Bound for our magical day. And we had a blast!
I was Rapunzel.
Erin was Belle.
And Cristina was Snow White.
(Cristina is a crafty princess who managed not to get her individual princess portrait taken….. clearly a Slytherin!)
For more from these gorgeous creatures who I am lucky enough to call friends, go check out their blogs. Yep…they’re both bloggers. Imagine that!
Also make sure you are following all three of us on Instagram, but only if you love pictures of happy, adorable people who love life and each other! #LadiesWeekend2016
The weekend may be over, but these friendships will last forever!! Next year we are deciding between New Orleans and Las Vegas and 2018 will see us in London for the most epic #SlytherGryffinPuff expedition ever imagined.
So keep a weather eye on the horizon for more us!
I’d been begging D and H for weeks, to let me read Harry Potter to them. They hemmed. They hawed. They’d heard of Harry Potter, of course. Who hasn’t! But they just weren’t exactly eager to sit still for a chapter a night. However I persisted saying, “You’re gonna love it…I promise!”
One night they finally relented and allowed me to read one chapter. Just one chapter. Which they fell asleep to. The next night they let me read another chapter and again…they fell asleep.
I was starting to despair. What if they didn’t like it? What if Chapter 2 was as far as we’d ever get? What if they’d never know the magic and wonders waiting for them at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry???
(First world problem…I know!)
But see, one of the great joys of nerdom is sharing favorite fandoms with the next generation. It’s the closest we can get to reading a favorite book or watching a favorite movie all over again, with fresh eyes. The kids had adored Back to the Future, were properly obsessed with all things Star Wars. But at 9 years old, they were the perfect age for Harry’s adventures! I didn’t want to miss this chance to introduce them to J.K.Rowling’s masterpiece.
But I repeat… they weren’t having any of it. Until one morning…right around chapter 5… I came downstairs, as usual. I grabbed my big cup of tea, asked the kids how they slept and what they wanted for breakfast, when D said these musical, magical, new favorite words….
“Lizzie, can we start reading more Harry Potter everyday?”
I almost dropped my teacup out of pure shock and joy.
“Really?” I said hopefully.
“Yeah!” he said. “Could we even start now? And read this morning before school?”
I’m pretty sure my body did an involuntary, celebratory jig. Best…words…ever spoken by a 9 year old boy to me!!
They’re both hooked (D more than H, but I’ll take what I can get! The girl will get it soon!) They’re waiting with baited breath as we read chapter to chapter. They already love Hagrid, are intrigued by Harry and can’t wait to hear more about Hogwarts. D even said to me,
” Lizzie, you do really good voices. But if you need a goblin voice, I can do it. Cause I’m really good at minion impressions.”
Life is good. The torch is passed and I’m a happy little nerd!!
Yesterday was a very full and eventful day at Leaky Con.
I simply adore Harry Potter, but I admit, I had an alternate purpose for attending this Con.
I am currently in production on a little web series that I hope to share with you very soon. And wanted to soak up the creative energy of the team from Pemberley Digital. They are doing wonderful things right now in the transmedia department and so I went to hear their panels specifically.
Head creator and executive producer, Bernie Su and transmedia producer, Alexandra Edwards kicked the day off with a look at how they are integrating classic literature into the modern, digital age.
Maxwell Glick and Mary Kate Wiles from The Lizzie Bennett Diaries joined them for the next panel to give us a taste of what’s next for Lydia Bennet and Mr. Collins. There’s a reason Lydia Bennett is called The Adorbs!!
I slipped into the Howarts Alumni panel towards the end to hear from Scarlett Bryne (Pansy Parkinson), Ellie Darcy-Alden (young Lily Evans Potter), Robbie Jarvis (teenaged James Potter), Charlotte Skeoch (Hannah Abbot), and Nick Shrim (Zacharias Smith).
Next up was the Emma Approved panel with the adorable cast of the hit web series. Bernie Su (executive producer), James Brett Isaacs(Bobby Martin), Dayeanne Hutton (Harriet Smith), Brent Bailey (Alex Knightley) and Joanna Sotomura (Emma Woodhouse herself).
They were too precious for words!!
Then the cast of Pemberley Digital’s brand new collaboration with PBS, Frankenstein MD. We got to preview the first two episodes of the series and it was amazing. It tells the tale of the adorable Victoria Frankenstein, almost MD played by Anna Lore and her assistant Igor DeLacey played by Steve Zaragoza.
After the Pemberley explosion I had a chance to walk around the Marketplace. And I found many treasures.
I could only make it for one day of the Con, but if you love Harry P. and want to immerse yourself in that world, then Leaky Con is the place for you!!! Get there and geek out. You won’t regret it!!!
