Nerd HQ Recap

If you still don’t know what Nerd HQ is, then listen up.
It is equal parts pure nerd heaven and heart-warming philanthropic endeavor.

image

To be a volunteer at Nerd HQ is like being at Nerd summer camp. You make great friends, have amazing fun and inevitably end up crying when it’s all over.

Comic Con is it’s own behemoth animal experience and every nerd should experience it at least once. And once they do, they should come over to Nerd HQ and never leave!

While Comic Con tends to be all lines and crowded spaces and over crowded panels, Nerd HQ is well orgnized and happy chaos. And because all the money made goes to Operation Smile, there is a sense of peace and happiness within everybody working there. Not only have we worked very hard to be chosen to be there, but we have chosen to be there for free. And that instantly becomes a rewarding experience!

The celebrities who come, new and returning seem constantly amazed at the blanket support given to this cause. And people walk away happy.

This is, of course, due in large part to the overall love that the nerd community has for Zachary Levi, prince of nerds (king would probably be Joss) arguably one of the kindest people in Hollywood.

He works to make his guests feel comfortable and protected and his fans feel special. All while being an ambassador and champion for Operation Smile. His team is made up of good friends and devoted family members. The kind of people he surrounds himself with says everything in the world about the kind of man he is. It was an honor to meet him.

When I say it was amazing to be apart of, what I mean to say is that it was AH-MAZE-ING!!

I would gladly go back every year if they’d have me.
And I endeavor to make every nerd in America aware of what they are doing over at The Nerd Machine. Because it’s truly worth knowing about.

Here’s a snapshot of what the week looked like from a volunteer perspective. The things I saw and got to do. There was a lot of standing and running around,  lot of being ready for whatever may come our way. And at the end of the day, every moment was worth the next.

30 Days of Nerdy Hair

Day 30: Mulan from Once Upon a Time

Today is the last day of the series and the last day of Nerd HQ. And I had a completely different hairstyle planned for today, but have decided to save it for a less sleep deprived day. If you know what thay style was then have no fear, I have it on standby for the next series.

So I chose Mulan from Once Upon a Time today. This is fierce hair and I love it!

image

To create this look, I started with a nice sized puff in front. And secured that with some bobby pins. Then I smoothed the hair by my face straight back and added a little spray to keep it sleek.
Next I created another puff in the back and secured that at the nape of my neck.

Day 29 – The Evil Queen from Snow White and the Huntsman

Only one day left of this amazing experience here in San Diego. So much money has been raised for Operation Smile at Nerd HQ. It’s just inspiring to see. I will recap everything later and remind everyone what Nerd HQ is, if you don’t already know (you should already know!!)

With all this goodness going around I decided to go evil today with the hair. So I chose Charlize Theron’s Evil Queen from Snow White and the Huntsman.

To create this look I just started making braids with my hair, in all different directions. And then somehow weaved them into each other.

Day 27: Princess Jasmine from Aladdin

Today is the first day of San Diego Comic Con. It’s also the first day of Zachary Levi’s Nerd HQ, which is the real reason (and best reason)for being in San Diego, CA this weekend!!

To kick off the finals days of 30 Days of Nerdy hair, I chose Princess Jasmine from Disney’s Aladdin.

image

To create this Disney princess look, I started with pretty tealish ribbon. Created a headband in the front and tied it at the nape of my neck. Then I rolled the front pieces of my hair around to the back, bobby pinning along the way.

Next I created a low pony tail and wrapped that in the same ribnon, securing in the back with bobbys.
Finally I created a second pony tail half way down and did the same thing with the ribbon.

Day 26: Smurfette from The Smurfs

Today I travel to San Diego for Nerd HQ and all the San Diego Comic Con madness that the city has to offer!
So I chose Smurfette. That poor little girl Smurf who had no other girl around to talk to about girlie things. I spent many a Saturday morning watching and enjoying The Smurfs!!

image

To create the smurfiest hair possible, I used my Chi straightener to give it a nice polished and curled texture. Then I added a slouchy hipster hat (which if you know me… I sorta hate and call parasite hats cause they look like they are eating your brains.)
And this is the only time you will ever catch me wearing one!

Today’s Imaginary Schedule…

Even though I can’t make it to the blessed event, that hasn’t stopped me from creating an imaginary Comic Con schedule for myself. And here’s what today’s day would’ve looked like, had I made it to San Diego this year…

10:15-11:15 TheOneRing.net: The Truth About The Hobbit— The Hobbit movie is imminent just at the book turns 75. With on-set visits, intrepid reporting, and the pulse of fans worldwide, the TORn staff shred rumors, answer questions, share New Zealand images-but not as part of the official publicity machine. Also featuring a special visual presentation from Weta Workshop and an account of Fandalf traveling the world and (all that is the tip of the iceberg!). Featuring Cliff Broadway (Ringers: Lord of the Fans) and Larry D. Curtis(Hobbit embedded reporter) and additional staff and guests. Room 6DE

12:00-1:00 Comics Arts Conference Session #2: Once More, with Comics: How the Whedon Universes Continue in Comic Book Form— Authors Katrina Hill (Action Movie Freak, GeekNation.com), Jennifer K. Stuller (Ink-StainedAmazon, GeekGirlCon), and Traci Cohen (CSU-Sacramento) examine how comic books and graphic novels provide a new form of media adaptation in which the graphic novel form furthers the canon or official continuity of television series as sequels to the original material. Creator Joss Whedon’s television universes enjoy new life in print (e.g. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9). Sharing their own thoughts on these Whedon comic book follow-ups are comic book writer/actress Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow and Tara), writer/producer Jane Espenson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Torchwood), writer Chris Gage (Angel & Faith), editors Scott Allie (Dark House) and Mariah Huehner (IDW), and actors Clare Kramer (Buffy the Vampire SlayerBring It On) and Tom Lenk (Buffy the Vampire SlayerCabin in the Woods). Room 26AB

Now, I am a Twilight fan, but the mere thought of trying to get into the Twilight panel, sends shivers of fear down my spine. So I most assuredly would skip it! And head for a quick bite to eat instead. After which…

2:00-3:00 Power Rangers: 20 Years and Beyond— Saban Brands and Shout! Factory officially kick off the 20th anniversary celebration of Power Rangers with a discussion featuring Elie Dekel (president, Saban Brands), Paul Schrier (“Bulk”), and other on-screen talent and members of the creative team. Moderated byBrian Ward (DVD producer of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Complete Series), the panel will dive into the origin and evolution of the Power Rangers franchise, including the long-awaited debut of the series on DVD and the show’s resurgence on Nickelodeon with Power Rangers Super Samurai and much more!Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront

3:30-4:35 Beauty and the Beast— Kristin Kreuk (Smallville) and Jay Ryan(Terra Nova), along with executive producers Jennifer Levin (Without a Trace), Sherri Cooper (Brothers and Sisters), Brian Peterson (Smallville) and Kelly Souders (Smallville discuss the new CW fall show: a modern adaptation of the beloved fairy tale. Centering on Catherine Chandler (Kreuk), a tough-minded NYPD homicide detective, who is haunted by witnessing her mother’s murder nine years ago and the murderer’s quick demise at what she perceived to be the hands of a beast. After years of searching, Catherine finally discovers the beast is Vincent Keller (Ryan), a survivor of a military experiment that went disastrously wrong and left him in hiding to lead a secret life. Join the cast and producers for an exclusive viewing of the first episode, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dalton Ross(assistant managing editor, Entertainment Weekly). Ballroom 20
5:00-6:00 Legendary Comics— Legendary Comics presents a behind-the-scenes look at its upcoming slate of must-read projects. Get first-look access to new content, grab limited-edition giveaways, and ask questions of your favorite creators. The panel is hosted by the nerdist himself, Chris Hardwick. Panelists include The Tower Chronicles creators Matt Wagner (GrendelMage) and Simon Bisley (Lobo, 2000 AD), Shadow Walk creators Max Brooks (The Zombie Survival GuideG.I. Joe: Hearts & Minds), Mark Waid (Kingdom Come,The Flash), and Shane Davis (Final Crisis: Rage of the Red LanternsSuperman: Earth One). Joining this all-star cast are co-creator of The Tower Chronicles and Shadow Walk, Thomas Tull (founder and CEO of Legendary Entertainment) and editor-in-chief Bob Schreck (All-Star Superman). Don’t miss breaking news regarding our next project from an elite creator in the comics industry who will be making a surprise appearance. Room 6A
The end of the night would be a tough decision between Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog and Comic Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope.
Regardless, after whichever of the two I ended up choosing, I would head over to The Nerd Machine’s NerdHQ for The Nerd Army Party. To end the day in the best of ways. With hundreds of nerds and dancing!!!

Good News, Bad News

The bad news is that I will not be in San Diego this weekend. If you don’t know to what I’m referring, then perhaps you’ve come to the wrong place. I’m talking, of course, about none other than mecca for the nerd inclined… COMIC CON! Sadly due to circumstances beyond my control I can’t go. (Imagine the tears and long lingering cry of ‘NOOOOOOOOO’ as I shake my fist in the air)

What this also means is that I’ll be missing out on another newly important and exciting event in a nerd’s life, The Nerd Machine’s NerdHQ, pioneered by the champion of all nerdom, Mr. Zachary Levi.

If you are planning to be in San Diego for the Con this weekend and you don’t know what the NerdHQ is (if such an animal exists) then stop now, read no further and click here.

On to the good news. My dear friend and die hard Whovian (you know where she’ll be Sunday afternoon), Audrey Carlson, will be there and has generously agreed to report back on all her nerdeavors with a section I’ll be calling ‘Nerd on Site.’

Nerd on Site

So make sure to check back for updates, excitement and a general sense of nerd community. Other places to get your fix, TheNerdMachine.com, TheNerdist.comBreak.comSpike TV will be reporting live and SDCC.com will also have updates.

Viva La Nerdolution!!
