Day 28: JEM from JEM and the Holograms
Out of all the characters I’ve chosen to cosplay this month, JEM is the one who is nearest and dearest to my heart. I used to watch the cartoon when I was a kid and dream of the day I could have pink hair and be a rock star!

Bringing in the big guns, as I approach the end of August and the end of my #thriftstorecosplay series. I hope you guys have been enjoying these as much as I have!! You know what I just realized the other day, I have 31+ costumes to choose from for Halloween this year!! Win, win, win!
Which leads me to think I might need to regenerate a mini version of this series in October leading into Halloween. But I don’t want to come up with the ideas on my own this time. I’ll be running polls and taking suggestions and maybe come up with a 10 day countdown as Halloween approaches. So if you have any cosplays you want to see me attempt in the days leading up to Halloween, you can tweet me, comment on Instagram, comment here on the blog or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Or maybe there’s a cosplay I did this series that you think would make the very best Halloween costume this year. Maybe you think I should take it to the streets, let me know!!
And in the meantime, here is my Mart McFly for your viewing pleasure!
Plaid Shirt, Denim Shirt and Jeans from Goodwill
Red Vest from OMG Thrift
High Tops from Plato’s Closet
Day 24: GLOW
This is one of my new favorite shows from Netflix this year. A show about the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, set in the 80’s (my favorite era!) If you haven’t seen this show yet, you should.
I didn’t chose a specific character to cosplay, I sort of did an homage to the whole genre. But I think the character I most resemble today is Betty Gilpin’s Debbie. If that doesn’t mean anything to you, it’s cause you didn’t take my advice yet and haven’t seen the show…what are you waiting for? Go watch it, I’ll wait!
Leotard & High Tops from Plato’s Closet
Headband from Sweaty Betty
Day 23: Dopey from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves
For as long as I can remember, I have been a Disnerd. Disney is in my blood. I grew up watching the movies. I have a favorite Princess, a favorite Prince, a favorite Disney song, a favorite Disney movie, a Disney Princess I most relate to, a Disney Prince I’d like to date and of course…a favorite Disney character of all time. Well, to be honest, I have two favorite Disney characters of all time.
The first is the Genie from Aladdin (RIP Robin) and the second is Dopey from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Sure, he doesn’t have much to say or even that much screen time. But there was always something about Dopey. I find him endearing. And he has been at the top of my list for a very long time. When I was a kid, it was rather customary for me to receive something with Dopey on it for my birthday or Christmas, in my stocking and I think I even got an Easter basket once that had a Dopey item or two.
My love for Dopey has matured…it’s grown, as I have. And here we go:
Hat & Shoes from Plato’s Closet
Dress from Goodwill
Day 22: The Fonz from Happy Days
I don’t know about you, but growing up with reruns of Happy Days meant the king of cool was none other than Henry Winkler’s Arthur Fonzerelli…aka The Fonz or Fonzie. He was always there to shed a well-timed “Eyyyy” on the situations Richie and the other Happy Days gang would find themselves in.
Here’s my version of The Fonz:
Leather Jacket, White Tee & Jeans from Goodwill
Sneakers from my shoe closet
Day 21: Dick Tracy
Who remembers the movie from the 90’s starring Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman & Madonna? I think it’s time to bring Tracy back and I am volunteering as tribute! I’m ready to solve all the crimes!!
Hat from my dad’s hat collection
Blazer from Salvation Army
Pants from OMG Thrift
White Shirt, Red Tie, Black Vest & Shoes from Goodwill
Belt from The Boys and Girls Club Thrift Store
Day 20: Romeo from Romeo + Juliet
Ok, let’s talk about Romeo + Juliet! When I was in middle school, the Baz Luhrmann version of Shakespeare’s most classic love story came out in theaters and I was instantly in love! And we’re talking pre-Titanic Leo love, which is an entirely different kind of love. One year later, Leonardo Dicaprio would become the biggest heart throb on the planet. But for those of us who started our love of Leo off with Romeo Montague, this one’s for you!
But I don’t just want to mention my deep and abiding love for Mr. Dicaprio (which has never diminished, even after all these years) I want to also talk about my love of Shakespeare, which was largely ignited by this very movie. After seeing it (about 100 times) I started reading it over and over again. In fact, my dad got me my own volume of Shakespeare’s works for Christmas that year and wrote a beautiful note to me about how Leo started me down a path and he was happy to have me continue down it. I memorized all the great monologues and would recite them in my room to my collection of beanie babies…I was a really cool kid, I promise!!
To this day, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet is one of my favorite movies and one of my favorite of Shakespeare’s plays. I’m sure there were teachers that tried to get me to read Shakespeare, perhaps my parents even attempted it. Shakespeare’s plays are enduring and everlasting. They are timeless and beautiful, but for my little middle school heart, it took Leonardo Dicaprio to spark my interest. And look at me now!!
