Day 11: Forrest Gump

I think Forrest Gump was my very first Tom Hanks movie. Or at least the one I remember seeing first. They say you never forget your first Hanks…well, they should say that! Because Tom is a national treasure. He’s one of those actors that is beloved by all. And if you don’t like Tom Hanks, then I truly question your very moral compass. How are you living an upstanding life if you don’t like The Hanks?! I ask you that!

I mean…I even named my cat after the incomparable Mr. Hanks. Look at that little face…

Tom Hanks the human

Don’t you think all cats should be named after him? Who are we kidding…name the dogs after him too. Are you having a baby? Let me offer you the name Tom Hanks…girl or boy! First name Tom, middle name Hanks! What better namesake could there be? Just look at how happy my cat is to bear the name of Hanks:

Tom Hanks the cat

Ok, bad example. Tom Hanks, the cat, never actually looks happy. But I’ll bet he’s smiling on the inside, all because he’s named after the G.O.A.T…Thomas Jeffrey Hanks. And…actually Tom Hanks, the cat’s middle name starts with a J too, just like human Tom Hanks! But it isn’t Jeffrey, it’s Jamesfranco.

Alright, back to the cosplay. Here is my homage to one of human Tom Hank’s greatest characters:

Moana

homepage_trailerthumbnail_moana_720_f3266261.jpeg

This movie was long anticipated. But I had no idea how much I would love Moana till I went and saw it in theaters…three times! Moana is the story of a young girl, the daughter of a chief. With her very birth comes the expectations of family and tradition. But Moana’s heart feels that #wanderlust and she wants to do out beyond the borders of her island life. Her meddlesome Gran is in her corner, but the call of her family is strong. And something just keeps holding her back. Until her true destiny is thrust into her hands by her Gran, who on her death bed tells her she has to follow her heart! Moana follows it past the shores of her island. She follows it to the demigod Maui. She follows it into the unknown, where she fights monsters and wrestles with her true nature. If you still haven’t seen it, what are you waiting for? It’s on Netflix…go on, I’ll wait!

Life of Pi

maxresdefault-1.jpg

Life of Pi has a lot in common with Moana. Where Moana’s story is one of discovery, Pi’s story is one of survival. But they both have familial expectations to wrestle with and come to terms with. Pi’s family is lost on a voyage across the ocean. And only him and the family’s zoo tiger, Richard Parker, survive. This movie’s visuals are stunning! Definitely worth a watch, especially during Moana Week!!

Cast Away

chucknoland.jpg

Cast Away may seem like a strange choice for Moana Week. But when you look deeper into the story of Cast Away and the way that Tom Hanks has to survive insurmountable odds, there are a lot of similarities to draw upon. Plus can’t you just see the similarities between Moana’s silly chicken Hei-Hei and Tom Hanks’ volleyball companion, Wilson!!

Journey 2: Mysterious Island

journey-2-the-mysterious-island-1920.jpg

Ok I mainly chose this one because it’s a fun little movie and has The Rock in common with Moana. There aren’t a lot of comparisons to draw between Journey 2: Mysterious Island and Moana. But Josh Hutcherson and the Rock are dreamy and there’s an island and I could go on, but I’m really just stretching here! Watch it for fun!

Waterworld

Waterworld-DI.jpg

Ok…Waterworld. I know…I know, worst movie ever made. Huge inflated budget, one of the most expensive films ever made. And what’s worse..it tanked at the box office. But have you gone back and watched Waterworld? I don’t think it’s as horrible as we all seem to think/remember. I’m not saying it deserves Oscars or anything, though it was actually nominated for one. I’m just saying, I wanted a reason to watch it and it really only seemed to fit on my Moana Watch List for Princess Boot Camp. So here it is… Waterworld. The story of a post-apocalyptic, dystopian future where the polar ice caps have melted and the world is submerged underwater, forcing the remaining citizens of Earth to survive in the perpetual ocean…the water world, if you will (yep, I did that.)

Atlantis: The Lost Empire

atlantis-the-lost-empire-facts.jpg

Who among us isn’t captured by stories of Atlantis? Have you ever dreamed of being among those who find the lost empire? I know I have! And Atlantis made me think a little of Moana. Both stories have that element of the search for something, the journey taken and the fellowships we make along the way to our destination. Did you know that Disney had plans for an underwater park based on Atlantis, but since the movie didn’t overwhelm at the box office, they cancelled it? I’m sad about that! I would love to go to an underwater theme park with an Atlantis theme!!

Swiss Family Robinson

swiss-family-robinson-1024.jpg

There’s a theme on this watch list and it’s survival. Which is not really what Moana is about at all. When Moana leaves her island of Motunui, it isn’t survival that is first on her mind, it is mission. But with adding ocean and island tales to my list, survival themes just seem to come naturally with that. Swiss Family Robinson is the story of a shipwrecked family…the Robinsons. Who are forced to survive on an island together. And to rebuild their lives in the face of overwhelming odds. And there are pirates.

Muppet Treasure Island

181164_full.jpg

Speaking of pirates. I added Muppet Treasure Island as a little visual and musical treat for everyone. It wouldn’t be right not to have another musical selection on the list. And this movie has lots of ocean and islands and journey through oceans to islands. Incidentally, it’s also one of my family’s favorite movies to quote. Enjoy!

39 Times Rom Coms Pissed Me Off

You know what really burns my butt? Romantic Comedies!! Because here I am over here…liberated female, free from the ties that bind me and then a movie like When Harry Met Sally comes on and all that level-headed nonsense goes right out the window because…reasons! It just burns. It stings actually.

Pissed Off Yoda

And the worst part is that Romantic Comedies and Dramedies and Sitcomedies and all manner of romance, to be honest, make me weak at the knees. One shot of a semi shirtless Mr. Darcy emerging from the pond at Pemberley and I know what I’ll be dreaming about that night. One little romantic speech from Tom Hanks and farewell normal, everyday human male specimen…don’t even bother, cause you’re no Hanks! Again I say, it burns! Because I don’t want to have that vision in my head. That romantic ideal and yet there it sits. Waiting for the moment to strike. The moment when a guy chooses to take me to a Starbucks for a first date instead of guerilla paintball a la 10 Things I Hate About You. Or at the airport while boarding my plane and no one comes to stop me from getting on…how rude! Or how about when I’m at a holiday party with no date and then…no one bursts through the door to save me.

The beautiful truth is that I can save myself, thank you very much. Always have, always will. The crappy side effect of my frail humanity is that I still want to be saved sometimes. In moments of weakness and ice cream… I want it.

And I’ve decided that Rom Coms are to blame. It doesn’t mean for a second that I’ll stop watching them, because I’m a weak human girlie specimen. And also…reasons! Regardless, here are the 39 romantic moments that just piss me off!!! Who’s with me??

Rom-com Syndrome

I am a sucker for a romantic comedy

Saturday night was a lazy night of bumming it at home with some ice cream and a bunch of romantic comedies. This is a very fun activity when in a group of like minded single ladies. But I caution watching these movies alone. It’s akin to an alcoholic at home alone with a bottle of Jack. No good can come of it.

Watching romantic comedies together lowers the risk of divorce -- tell him that next time he clicks on the game. #movies #happymarriage

Don’t get me wrong, emotional cutter that I am, I love every single one. Even the terribly cheesy Lifetime Originals. Anything with Meg Ryan or John Cusack is my bread and butter. But ladies, we have got to stop. Because I gotta tell ya… the chances of you exchanging letters or emails with a stranger and that stranger ending up as the guy you secretly had a crush on all along…it’s not a thing!

P.S., I Love You (2007) a film by Richard LaGravenese + MOVIES + Hilary Swank + Gerard Butler + Harry Connick Jr. + Lisa Kudrow + Gina Gershon + James Marsters + cinema + Drama + Romance

I know you secretly hope that you’ll flit off on a grand adventure to Ireland and meet a cute, sweet Irishman who happens to be single and looking for an American girlfriend. One who, oh yeah… lives in America. Recipe for success!

What Happens When Two Women Re-Watch "Pretty Woman" - We re-watched Pretty Woman and started to wonder if this is actually a good movie. Turns out, we had a lot of feelings.

I know why we buy it. It keeps hope alive for the singletons of the world. We think, “Yeah, but Julia Roberts made it happen so there’s a chance right?” I’m not saying you won’t find love. I’m just saying you’ll probably have to settle for meeting a normal dude at some normal location under completely normal circumstances. And Tom Hanks won’t be within a 20 mile radius. Neither will Rob Reiner!

25 days of (nerdy) Christmas!

“O Nerdy Night!”

Day 13: Holiday Movies

Every Christmas my family and I go to the movies. It’s a tradition and we always look forward to the holiday releases. This year the options are:

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (The most likely choice as it is the nerdiest!)

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Saving Mr. Banks (Second most likely choice. We love Disney and this is a family friendly movie!)

Saving Mr. Banks

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (The underdog of choices as it seems really heart-warming, but will most likely not have a chance against The Hobbit)

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

47 Ronin (Looks awesome, but action rarely makes the Christmas cut.)

47 Ronin

American Hustle (The big NO! Not one member of my family wants to see 5 of the most attractive movie stars look like 1970’s trailer trash! No matter how much critical acclaim it garners.)

American Hustle

Justin Bieber’s Believe (No one saw the first one and this is what… a sequel?)

Justin Bieber's Believe

Walking with Dinosaurs (We may all be giant children, but none will be tempted by this film about talking dinosaurs.)

This is going to be the best movie ever. I know it!

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (My personal choice. With the recent passing of Nelson Mandela, this is both important and inspiring. Sounds like Christmas to me!)

MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM

Frozen (Strong possibilities. It will still be in the theaters, but I have yet to see it, and chances are the members of my family haven’t seen it yet either. And I mentioned the deep love of Disney!)

Frozen: Elsa the Snow Queen, coming this Thanksgiving. Excited!

Grudge Match (Again with the big no! Granny would never go for this film about 2 old timers duking it out years past their prime!)

You’ve Got Mail Walking Tour

If you’re looking for something fun and interesting to do in New York City then try this You’ve Got Mail self-guided walking tour of the upper west side.

1. First stop is Riverside Park where Joe and Kathleen meet at the end of the movie. It’s in the park at 91st street. There’s a perfect little garden.

And where she unsucessfully tries to avoid him.

3. They have hot dogs at Grey’s Papaya on 72nd and Broadway.

5. We hit both bookstores on Broadway as an homage to Fox Books and The Shop Around the Corner.

Barnes and Noble on Bway btn 82nd and 83rd and Westsider Rare & Used Books on 80th and Bway.

6. Verdi Square is where Joe and Kathleen cross paths without even knowing it at the very beginning of the movie.

7. Most important of all is Cafe Lalo on 83rd where Joe goes to meet Kathleen for the first time face to face (but not really cause they’ve already met)”She had to be! She had to be!!”

I recommend the apple pie with rosemary caramel!! Delish.

Thus ends our self-guided tour. The upper west side is a delightful part of the city made even more enchanting with pointed You’ve Got Mail quotes. Give it a try and let me know how it goes and if you discover anything new and exciting to add to the tour!
