Day 9: Fairy Godmother from Disney’s Cinderella (1950)

Everyone’s always giving all the love to the Disney Princesses, ok…I know…me included.  But what about the supporting characters who make the Princesses’ stories happen. Like…for example…Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother. We don’t know much about her, but we know that without her Cinderella would be up a creek without a paddle, if you will.

And another thing. We know Cinderella is Becky with the good shoes, but dang, if the Fairy Godmother didn’t have her own exquisite taste in footwear, would she really be giving Cindy such a great pair of heels? Women with bad taste in shoes don’t give shoes as a gift. I’m just saying…Fairy G Mom is probably rocking a pretty epic shoe closet back at home. With that in mind…here is my take on Cindy’s Fairy Godmother, mind the shoes!!

#PrincessBootCamp – Rapunzel Meal Plan

Princess Boot Camp Rapunzel Week Disney Fitness Blog
Created with Canva

Rapunzel is a young girl who was taken from her family as a baby and raised by an evil woman in a tower. She is a hopeful dreamer who thinks that there must be something beyond the borders of her little tower. She is a trusting, happy soul who never once stops to question why she has to stay in the tower in the first place.

IMG_6528.jpg

This week, we are focusing on Rapunzel as represented by Disney Studios in Tangled. If you are unfamiliar with the original, more gruesome version…look it up. That is not the one we are focusing on, but it’s interesting to read the original fairytales and wonder, how in the world Disney saw the happy, romance in such cautionary tales? I pose that question to you.

But aside from that, we are talking Rapunzel. She of the impossibly long and enchanted hair. For our meal plan this week, we’re getting creative. This is probably a province of England, though no one has accents…so choosing a menu based on region proves a little more difficult this week. Instead we are focusing on foods that are inspired by the movie Tangled and foods particularly helpful in promoting healthy hair growth.

Here’s our shopping list this week:

-angel hair pasta (get it!)

-flaxseed (great addition to smoothies and yogurts)

-Fruits (blackberries, apples, strawberries, etc.)

-Spinach and/or Kale

-Brussel Sprouts and Green Beans

-grilled Chicken, pork and/or beef

-Hazelnut Soup (Rapunzel’s favorite)

-beans and nuts (for extra sources of protein)

Like I said, this shopping list is a little more whimsical than the other princesses. I hope you enjoy it!

39 Times Rom Coms Pissed Me Off

You know what really burns my butt? Romantic Comedies!! Because here I am over here…liberated female, free from the ties that bind me and then a movie like When Harry Met Sally comes on and all that level-headed nonsense goes right out the window because…reasons! It just burns. It stings actually.

Pissed Off Yoda

And the worst part is that Romantic Comedies and Dramedies and Sitcomedies and all manner of romance, to be honest, make me weak at the knees. One shot of a semi shirtless Mr. Darcy emerging from the pond at Pemberley and I know what I’ll be dreaming about that night. One little romantic speech from Tom Hanks and farewell normal, everyday human male specimen…don’t even bother, cause you’re no Hanks! Again I say, it burns! Because I don’t want to have that vision in my head. That romantic ideal and yet there it sits. Waiting for the moment to strike. The moment when a guy chooses to take me to a Starbucks for a first date instead of guerilla paintball a la 10 Things I Hate About You. Or at the airport while boarding my plane and no one comes to stop me from getting on…how rude! Or how about when I’m at a holiday party with no date and then…no one bursts through the door to save me.

The beautiful truth is that I can save myself, thank you very much. Always have, always will. The crappy side effect of my frail humanity is that I still want to be saved sometimes. In moments of weakness and ice cream… I want it.

And I’ve decided that Rom Coms are to blame. It doesn’t mean for a second that I’ll stop watching them, because I’m a weak human girlie specimen. And also…reasons! Regardless, here are the 39 romantic moments that just piss me off!!! Who’s with me??

I Don’t Believe In That Anymore

IMG_3590

Back when I was 15 and a wide-eyed, romantic high school kid, I believed whole-heartedly in ‘The One.’ I believed there was One predestined,  preordained (I won’t say perfect, but pretty darn close) person God had picked out for me. And it was just a matter of time till he found me or I found him. Our paths would one day cross (ideally by the age of 22), he’d be captured by that thing that seems to capture men’s attention in the movies and we would be married and well on our way to ‘happily ever after.’
Cause that’s how it works right?

Well, 22 came and The One never did. 25 came and I was still single. 30 came and I thought something must have been wrong. Isn’t ‘he’ supposed to have found me by now? What was taking so long? Was I really that hard to find?

Then, one day, my pastor preached a sermon on love and The One at church. He said that there is no such thing as The One. This is not a concept created by God. He’s not up there weaving his magical tapestry of our lives and preordaining every single thing we do, including who we do or do not marry. Yes, He knows what our choice will be and I think to some people that seems to mean the choice isn’t there to begin with, if He knows the outcome. But I don’t believe that. He created so many different people for us to meet and connect with and love. It’s the choice that makes the difference. It’s the choice that makes us free. And it’s the choice to choose to love someone that makes falling in love so much better than just accidentally letting it happen and having no say in the matter.  (Check out the sermon series here: Journey NYC)

Besides, if there was only One person out there for me to end up with… what if he got bored and married someone else? What if he had a tragic accident leaving him unable to come and find me? What if he died prematurely, never allowing us to meet at all? Would that be it for me? Would that be the end of the romantic story of my life?

Can you imagine… you spend your life waiting and one day you die and you get to Heaven and ask God,

“What happened, God? I thought you wanted me to get married and have kids, but my One never came around. Did I do something wrong?”

And God says, “Totally had someone for you, but he fell onto the train tracks one day and died before he met you. Sorry about that. Nothing I could do, my hands were tied. But he would have been perfect for ya! I promise.”

By limiting ourselves to one person in a sea of billions, we limit the possibilities for our lives. We limit God’s imagination for us. And we limit ourselves to some unattainable fairytale.

I am an optimist. I am a romantic. I believe in love. I just don’t believe in love at first sight or destiny. I think it’s hard work to love someone. I think it will be hard work for someone to love me. I think that it’s a choice and I just haven’t chosen to take that step with anyone I have met so far. Rather than waiting for someone to see that magical thing in me that inspires love and devotion, I’m waiting to see it in someone. It takes two to tango and I won’t wait around to be chosen. I get to do the choosing! And that is an encouraging thought. God has placed the ball entirely in my court. It’s up to me to make the move.

Check out this week’s episode of my web series for more on The One!!

Day 14: Cinderella From Disney’s Cinderella

It is so cold and gross outside. This is the perfect hairstyle for a gross and windy day. I only wish I had a fairy godmother who could make nice weather for today. Things are always worth the wishing!! I’ve done Princess Cinderella, so this time I decided to do peasant Cinderella.

Thank goodness my ugly step sisters were too busy planning for the ball to get in my way this morning!! Because even though it’s an easy hairstyle, it still takes a little doing. Bibbidi Bobbidi Here it is:

Day 6: Yvaine from Stardust

If you’ve never seen the movie Stardust, then you are missing out on a  cinematic treat. This movie based on the novel by Neil Gaiman, is funny, romantic and action packed. It’s as close to a modern day Princess Bride as any movie could possibly get. And since it was recently added on Netflix, I have been re-watching it lately.  So I encourage you not only to go pick up the book because… reading is cool, but to also watch the movie because…movies are cool too!

Here is my attempt at recreating this look. You can’t help but feel like a shining star with this hair. My co-worker said it looked like the perfect wedding hair. Love it and I’ll remember that if I ever need such a thing.

Liz Tailor: The College Years

I wouldn’t categorize my upbringing as “sheltered.” I knew what went on. I had friends who were told about all that “adult” stuff in deep and gory detail. So I got the scoop when necessary. And my parents did their best to prepare me for the world. “Make good choices, young grasshopper!”

But the truth is, when you get to college, there is an immediate freedom that comes along with it. As well as easy access to all the things you weren’t allowed to do under your parents roof.

So I immediately took it upon myself to watch R-rated movies and every single episode of Dawson’s Creek I could get my hands on. After all, those were quite forbidden in my house.

College is a time of awakening and experimenting. And boy did I go crazy! I experimented heavily with hair dye. Some were extremely bad choices (me with bottle died black hair = really bad decision!) I experimented with staying out all night and line dancing at Stetson’s on the Moon. I even tried my first alcoholic drink, a Midori sour and it was so gross!!!

Ok… maybe I was a little sheltered after all, a little naive.

Back then I liked a boy and I truly thought that if I never told him I liked him and just pretended that we were friends that miraculously God would hit him with a love dart and he would see me as he never had before. We would ride off into the sunset and happily ever after would ensue. Remember that I’d never had a boyfriend up to this point and still didn’t have one. One need not wonder why.

In reality, that boy barely knew me and what he did know of me, he merely considered a friend and nothing more! NOTHING.

Imagine my shock and disappointment when I didn’t get a happy fairytale ending with me married at 23. (Thank God, whose plans are far greater for me than my own!)

If you’ve seen the latest episode of my little web series, then you’ll hear about a particularly ridiculous occurrence in the life of little Lizzie (truth be told, I went by Beth back then.)

My roommate and I, at the time, entrenched ourselves so deeply in Hollywood movie land that we actually thought that if we picked a place off the top of our heads, that maybe God or fate or destiny would step in and make magic happen. Funny thing is that magic did happen while we weren’t looking.

We stayed blessedly single and became very good friends. The kind that can still laugh about the dumb things we did way back then! (Am I right Becs?)

See, if I had gotten what I wanted back then and got married right off the bat, life would have been fine as God can use all things for His glory. But I wouldn’t be who I am today. And, you see, I am exactly where I’m supposed to be. So… I guess what I’m trying to say is I’m still on the look out for the occasional fairytale. I never really gave them up. But reality is so much cooler. I’d take that over Serendipity any day!!!
